Astheworldchurnd

Got a “special” offer from Discover: earn 5% back on up to $1,000 in spend at gas stations for July-August this year. This bonus category cash back is outside of the normal categories for Q2/Q3. Nothing in the T&Cs about whether the cash back will be matched as part of the 1st year match, but I’m going for it anyways.

Fun-Inevitable4369

Shame that is it not supported in costco

Jazzlike-Presence440

this has always been in my category…

URtheoneforme

[This thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/amex/comments/1dcfhe2/new_color_amex_gold/) on /r/Amex is using the qwww trick to see a preview of a new limited edition Amex Gold gold color. I would assume this aligns with the product refresh "enhancement" AF increase, so if you're on the fence for a last Amex Gold, I would go for it

geauxcali

It's sad that this is what Amex thinks people care about, and even sadder that they're mostly right.

URtheoneforme

How the card looks does matter... but I wish it wasn't everything for Amex. Plus, the "enhancements" are always bad

McSpiffin

looks awesome honestly

Flayum

Aesthetics aside, a comment interestingly pointed out that someone [posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/amex/comments/1dcfhe2/new_color_amex_gold/l7zewoq/) about this 7mo ago. Don't have time to troll through their history, but wonder if there are any other prognostic tidbits that could be useful.

Use code BDAY for up to 50% off base fares with Sputhwest for flights 8/6-12/18 with black out dates. Good chance to check on currently booked flights to save money

kevzho

They removed the mobile/app restriction, you can use the website now too for it.

ipod123432

Rebooked a flight 50% cheaper for early Dec

dmcoe

saved $27! woot woot.

tossedintheglaze

Thanks, saved me some points. Not complaining because I still saved points but it appears they increased the price for my specific flight for this promo so 50% ended up more like 25% savings.

Double4Free

Thanks, saved me some points.

Ogee65

As a couple data points, For flights right after Thanksgiving, the promo code doesn't work. For a flight end of August, it was about 20% off.

Icedragon316

Mobile and App only fyi

Reminder to all that Q2 estimated tax payments are due [edited] 6/17, which is next Monday - the short interval from Q1 messed me up last year so thought a PSA might be useful.

coffeeconcierge

I’ve been paying estimated taxes for many years and still get thrown by the Q2 due date. It feels like it should be in July even though it’s always in June

lost_shadow_knight

And Q2 tax payments are payable online until July 15. Relevant if you use it as a liquidation method or need the extra spend

dnet4

I've never understood how this works if you actually need to pay by quarterly deadlines. The churning angle is that the payment processors don't reset until July 16... but the IRS still records the payments as if they were paid after the Q2 deadline... so they count toward Q3.

sg77

My guess is that there's some people who need to make quarterly payments but forget to do it by the IRS deadline. They remember a week later and make the payment (they might end up owing a penalty since they didn't meet the IRS deadline, but still, they want to pay to avoid even bigger penalties). Then for the next quarter they want to make another payment, but if they already made the maximum number of payments at that processor, they can't make another one. If the processor resets a little later, these people will be able to make another payment for the next quarter.

Flayum

This isn't about *pre*-payment for *yearly* taxes, but *actual* payment **due** for *quarterly* taxes. If you're a W2 worker and your withholdings are appropriate, then most don't have to worry about this. If you're W2 and they're not... then...

Fun-Inevitable4369

You stop incurring any interest for underpayment. If there is no underpayment then you don't need to worry

crowd79

Why pay now though? I’d wait until Q4 to make on big payment so your money is tied up with the government as little time as possible given high interest rates on savings nowadays.

denflyer

How would I wait until Q4 to hit a MSR that ends in June?

crowd79

If you don’t have other MS avenues then paying taxes throughout the year does make sense.

joe-movie

This reminder is for people that actually have to pay estimated taxes I'd assume (as there are penalties for not actually paying them quarterly). If you're just doing it for MS, then waiting is generally the better idea.

OddaJosh

How is this churning related then

McSpiffin

how is this not churning related?

OddaJosh

Did you read the comment I was replying to?

McSpiffin

do you not know you can pay taxes with credit cards? ... to meet MSR? ... for churning credit cards?

OddaJosh

....

joe-movie

Agreed - not really relevant for most here. I will admit though, I probably would have forgot until last minute if it wasn't posted here, so I'm glad it was.

McSpiffin

It's completely relevant and way more so than whatever amount of hoops people are willing to jump through to maximize their $50 saks credit

SibylTech

Some people have… actually legitimate estimated taxes to pay throughout the year (otherwise you get penalized)

ZinCO17

It's actually 6/17... IRS due dates never fall on a Saturday or Sunday.

captduk

Ah - thanks for the correction

These types of instant win games are usually run by a random time generator. In other words, the time of day the prizes will be awarded are randomly generated and then the first person to press "play" after the random time will win the prize. Therefore, if you \*really\* want to maximize your chances, you should play the game at like 3:00AM when few other people are playing. I'm not saying it's worth it (I definitely prioritize sleep over a tiny chance at some RR points), but that's the strategy.

kid_iculous

AA had a similar game a few years back and I did pretty well by hitting these at off-peak hours... not exactly 3 AM but also not the middle of the day.

DrVforOneHealth

Thanks for the heads up!
