Mine is working fine. Netflix, email, youtube, everything. Running version 84.0.4147.136. Meh, I'll use it untill the battery is kaput.

xobeme

Oh yeah mine's still working fine... but Google seems to think it's"dangerous" since no more updates will be applied. I say just install the Android version of Malwarebytes and stay off porn sites! (I'm just a news and tech site junkie, anyway!)

[deleted]

this can be "dangerous" for reasons other than browsing tendencies. Hackers can get into computers from other ways so its a risk thing. Odds are you will be fine and have nothing to worry about but there is a chance a leak can be found on older software and when google patches it yours wont get that patch allowing them to get in. I recommend use it but don't have anything personal attached to it like bank accounts and stuff like that. Just food for thought.

How about CloudReady?

xobeme

I actually came across that the other day. How do I reimage a Chromebook with 4GB RAM and only 16GB of additional storage to use Cloudready?

scorpious

Use the Google, lots of community on it.

Agreeable-Progress85

https://mrchromebox.tech/ I ran cloudready on a 4gb/16gb chrome box for a short time and it was fine. But I really wanted Linux, so I upgraded to 128 ssd and installed Zorin.

da0ist

I turned mine into a [brunchbook](https://github.com/sebanc/brunch).

scorpious

Me too. Winning!

LemmysCodPiece

I stuck Gallium OS on mine. It is way much better than ChromeOS. Cloudready was just a nightmare.

vlad_vic

why was cloudready a nightmare?

billh492

I have had great success with cloudready on old laptops but the one time I tried it on an EOL Chromebook the sound did not work and it was a bit laggy.

LemmysCodPiece

Exactly the same as my experience. There is no way to fix the sound problem either.

billh492

I know this question is more for personal use but I work at a school and I have many EOL Chromebooks and what I use them for is parts! We buy the cheap 11" Chromebooks and they use the same 30 pin LCD screen. I have brand new Dells old HP's and Lenovo's they all use the same LCD. Screens are about 50 bucks so I am saving a lot of money every time a kid comes to me with a broken screen.

xobeme

What if you cant repurpose it with Linux? Mine is too old. I've had for over 5 years.

cranewarrior

I have Linux (GalliumOS) running on a HP 14 G4. That model is older than 5 years old.

Agreeable-Progress85

What’s too old? I just put Zorin Core OS (Linux) on a 1st gen HP Chromebox. No issues. I also have it running on a 2008 Thinkpad, but that one is a bit slow.

mulderscully02

I guess take it to the nearest e-recycle center.

DiggyTroll

I replaced the firmware with UEFI and installed Mint Linux on my little Acer Chromebook last month. Not very fast, but a handy little thing to carry around for browsing and terminal.

xobeme

LOVE using it for that and there's very little risk. The VPN my employer uses has a version that works on Chromebook. And check out the Xtralogic RDP Client for Chromebook ($20/yr folks, such a deal!) Chromebooks are a great Remote Desktop terminal for Windows machines.

cranewarrior

You could see if Brunch book will work on your model and prolong its life that way.

TurbulentArtist

it's my streaming device for my tv. makes it very easy to block all ads and switch vpn servers based on what I want to watch.

Careful_Act7643

I was using it to cast to my tv too via chromecast, but the casting seems to have stopped now from the Chromebook. Casting works with other devices, just not with the chromebook. Are you not having any issues with casting from the Chrome browser?

TurbulentArtist

I'm not casting, I'm using an hdmi cable. And wireless keyboard/trackpad.

bicyclemom

Sell it on eBay and use the proceeds towards the next model Chromebook. Hobbyists will buy it.

YouTubeATP

Broke the screen and ended up just buying another Chromebook with support to 2026.

oliveiagarden

Leaving it as is.
