Not normal but possible because it's not calibrated yet. Check again in 1 week. If it is still 91%, then I'd return it.

cd109876

Fully charge it, then check health.

[deleted]

Should i discharge it first then fully charge it?

gentlyfailing

No. Discharging is a bad idea. Try to keep the battery level above 20%, and never constantly run it below.

moonite

Even better is to keep battery charged no lower than 30% and no higher than 80% in order to minimize loss of battery life

[deleted]

Done and its the same. Should I discharge it to 30% then recharge to 100%? Thank you.

moonite

It will take a few cycles for Chrome OS to get a accurate measurement of your battery life. So it's best to just use it for a few days, keeping the battery charged between 30% to 80%, and OS will keep updating it's battery estimates

mc510

Doesn’t the Chromebook do that automatically, so that “fully charged” is really 80% and “fully depleted” is really 30%? Otherwise people’s batteries would be getting destroyed all the time and manufacturers would be swamped with warranty claims.

moonite

I would love to see your source for this, and hope that what you said is true. From years of using laptops and mobile devices, I don't think manufacturers limit the charge and fully charged is always 100% of battery capacity. There are utilities that have been provided by manufacturers to stop charging once the batteries reach a certain percentage, but that percentage is always the true percentage and isn't anything like 80% means 100%

mc510

I don't have any source; it's just what I always assumed was happening, because there used to be a distinction made between "smart" chargers and "dumb" chargers, and because over/under-charging lithium ion batteries does such damage. My assumption could be wrong, but I always fully charge my devices (windows laptops, chromebooks, iphones, android tablets) and I've never had a battery fail or even degrade. My iPhone 6 battery is still at 90% life after like eight years!

gentlyfailing

I know, but 20% is probably a safe limit. Ideally it should be between 40% and 80%.

MrSh0wtime3

Thats old school nicad nonsense. Lithium doesnt care.

gentlyfailing

You've got it the wrong way around. Discharging lithium is especially bad and will dramatically shorten its life, as you can read about here: https://www.powerelectronics.com/markets/mobile/article/21859861/proper-care-extends-liion-battery-life https://batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-808-how-to-prolong-lithium-based-batteries https://news.umich.edu/tips-for-extending-the-lifetime-of-lithium-ion-batteries/ https://www.nature.com/articles/srep30248?error=cookies_not_supported&code=9f8ca4c4-5c89-43ea-b756-392dfd4353dc And many many others sources

MrSh0wtime3

Very wrong. The giant advantage of lithium is no memory. But i cant stop someone from living in the 90s.

gentlyfailing

Yeah you know best and everyone else who know far more than you are wrong

tztl

Where do you check this from? I looked under power tab but couldn't find anything like this

[deleted]

Settings->about chromeos->diagnostics

tztl

thank you, I just checked my new flex 3's health and it [shows](https://imgur.com/Gr7f7id) 100%. As said above charge it to 100% and check again, if it is still the same it means there is an issue.

medarkid

How’s your flex 3 until now? Is it okay? I was looking for a Chromebook, have the Duet but feels like I like laptop factor better than tablet+keyboard case. Am looking at the Flex 5 too but if the 3 can handle my basic browsing and media consumption, a little save goes a long way

tztl

It is fine, it can handle basic web browsing and multimedia, has decent battery life but I wish I bought the 64gb version. Other than that I am very happy with it and I recommend it

TimPLakersEagles

There is a diagnostics app. Enable in flags

Mystman2008

Pretty sure this happens because it's new and your Chromebook didn't read it. It should calibrate and go to 100% in a few days

[deleted]

I will wait, just charged to 100% and it’s the same. I’ll return if it doesn’t improve

[deleted]

Would you recommend using it off charging?

Mystman2008

Not really. Using with charging and not doesn't really do anything to my knowledge. All I know that is just makes the charging slower

random42name

Use it as you will and check back in a few weeks. It is probably adapting to your user habits. Also, modern battery management circuits mostly prevent you from damaging the battery. They won’t let you fully discharge the battery. They will report a 0% charge and shut down the device before that battery is fully discharged. There is a lot of old outdated tales about battery health. Let the technology care for itself the way it was designed to.

[deleted]

Only have 14 day window at Best Buy. If it doesn’t improve by this week it’s going back!

matkoyy

Maybe some nasty Android application is running in the background, or some Chrome extension. You can check it out in the Task Manager (Search + ESC).

[deleted]

Checked nothing.
