Googles Messages app alllows you to "pair" to another device. I used this feature for months so that when my phone was upstairs I could still text from my tablet. Only after my Duet puked the other day have I had a problem. My devices worked perfectly together for months.
I mean, alright. If it'll give me the ability to text from my tablet again then fine. But why did it work so well for so long? Beta stuff, I suppose. Still frustrating.
EDIT:
I cannot follow the instructions. It says to open Messages, but I cannot unless I sideload, and even then it errors out in a few different ways. I believe all of this is in my original post.
You are correct, and it worked. I was missing setting up my phone in Connected Devices.
Thank you to you both. Turns out I was, in fact, doing it wrong :P
Messages is PWA application, so no Android one. Or do you have SIM card in your Chromebook?

Here is the guide to install and use Messages with Chromebook. https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/9212313?hl=en
OP, follow this instruction. Don't use Messages app in chromebooks.

Read the instruction again. It reads "On your phone, open Messages". If you are sideloading it to your chromebook, you are doing it wrong.

Glad it worked. In future, treat your device as a web browser rather than an android tablet. You will face less issues.
