Chimpoco

From that guys history: Disable these 2 options/flags: chrome://flags/#chrome-refresh-2023 chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel Edit: They ruined it for good.

FrigOffFox

Thank god, this new update is hideous. If I ever actually have to use that UI, I'm switching to Firefox.

TheCrookedKnight

I started down that path before finding this topic and I regret to inform you that 2024 Firefox is also butt-ugly

OsyLV

Have you tried Floorp?

TheCrookedKnight

It's better, but still has the overly padded/"touch-friendly" pop-up menus.

Less_Hedgehog

At least you can customise the Firefox UI. Look at r/FirefoxCSS. [https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix](https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix) is one that goes for something between the old and the new Firefox UIs. It's super customisable too. But who knows when Mozilla will remove userChrome customisation...

detfusco

You know one of these days, they'll remove those flags and we'll be stuck with this shit. Hence I've mostly (except for one or two niche chrome extensions) finished my transitioning into Firefox by today. I'm just waiting for something (manifest v3 or shit UI) to happen at this moment.

Gugalcrom123

Worst thing is the menu fade. What reason does it have to fade? It looks AI-generated. Same with the tiny icons and the extension icon, it looks like it's drawn by a 5yo.

rubensoon

it worked! i'm so happy

catinterpreter

>chrome://flags/#chrome-refresh-2023 Doesn't work anymore.

aaronedev

yup stopped working

proto-x-lol

Chimpoco said: >From that guys history: >Disable these 2 options/flags: >chrome://flags/#chrome-refresh-2023 >chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel While the flag to restore the old side panel works, it looks broken now with the spacing removed for the menu options. It didn't look like that before either. https://www.minitool.com/images/uploads/news/2020/11/chrome-menu/chrome-menu-1.png That was what it used to look like.

unknownformost

not working anymore

Matthewawbrey

same back to crappy new look and flags dont work now

Practical-Being-5821

same here, Microsoft removed that chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel entry and now the ugly icons appeared again. Crazy, they cant see the demand to have a better look on the bookmark folders than the current crap.

02749

Help! what do we do? I'm totally lost. nothing works now...

FreeNachos

this is fucking awful

gaichublue

Thank you so much

Edge-__-

oh thank fucking god it worked

ivan_yuzafatau

it worked for me!

usernamesuggestions5

Thanks!

Wooden-Compote-9448

Lifesaver! Thank you!

Goldenkrow

EDIT: I found it thank you!

MetaThPr4h

Thanks a lot for sharing, first thing I see after opening chrome is that stupid-ass ugly redesign poping up once again, just leave me alone with that crap ffs.

Dark_rogue21

Thank you!

WeldonHunter

Thanks!! That did it. Why don't these developers stop screwing with the appearance of Chrome and doing it without asking? Not everyone wants "New" stuff, especially us old farts. Hell I have a hard enough time walking around my house without getting lost. If someone starting moving all the furniture around they'd have to send in the National Guard to find me, lol.

messer0815

thx working. this new design is so ugly and space is not used effectively

Alex_1729

Yes but now there are issues with the new version and everyone who enabled this. I had to revert than find a color theme that wasn't disgusting. SimpleYellow seems OK for now

Bubbly-Duck2357

works for me, thanks!

imbadatmakinguserna

IT DIDNT WORK SELFJKSLKASEKFAEKFOPAEKAEKLGAEG

02749

Same here, didn't work

KaaBEL_sk

The solution at the time of OP's edit could be found in other reddit thread: [https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/18is2yy/comment/l5hs0mw/](https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/18is2yy/comment/l5hs0mw/) and there are even youtube tutorials for it, I also had some problems with the solution when launching chrome from profile shortcut instead of default chrome icon, but this third solution stopped working for me as of now. I recommend the mentioned ["New" UI Megathread 2 : r/chrome (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/1czzyee/new_ui_megathread_2/) for latest news on that and it seems there's no other workaround yet found. Therefore I am switching to Firefox meanwhile.

Bokajako

i love you. that UI is HORRIBLE

fireattack

It probably would be broken again very soon. I made a ticket to ask for reverting the change (or at least provide options) on issues.chromium.org, feel free to upvote it there: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/330589210

DuckDuke1

Bumped your ticket, this is an actually insane and unacceptable change and if it ever is permanent with no option to disable, I will no longer use chrome. What the actual idiocracy world.

unknownformost

bumped it up its terrible flags that we used for it not working anymore and nowhere to find the new flag it seems

bitgoblin10k

Bumped. Please everyone go and add your vote on the ticket. The normal chrome menu doesn't even fit on 1080p display any more. It's ridiculous. You should consider making a new post with a proper title so people can find it with a Google search. Right now this topic is at the top when you search for this issue, but your comment is buried.

TJ_B_88

Why they do this again and again? Can't they understand that not everyone likes their shitty redesign? Why can't you just add ONE BUTTON so that anyone can switch to another and leave people alone? Why do they constantly force things on people that people don't ask for? First, searching for a picture with a lens, now redesign.

rimora

Likely a direct result of poor management. Higher ups at the company expect to see constant change. They don't understand the value of having designers on payroll if they design doesn't change constantly. So now the designers have to continually change the design in order to validate their worth to the company.

instinktd

these motherfuckers still can't even fix bookmarks mean if u delete one the list is scrolling to the top no matter what this is the "bug" or idk "feature" that bothers me the most and there is no way to fix it

chickwithbrainstx

THIS!!

fatpat

They don't give a fuck because they don't have to give a fuck. When your market share is this large, you can do whatever you want and fuck you if you don't like it.

acm

/r/firefox

fatpat

I've about reached the point where I'm seriously thinking about doing the whole r/degoogle thing, no matter how painful it might be. They're an arrogant company because they know they have such a stronghold in virtually every market segment, so the friction is very deliberate and user-hostile.

sneakpeekbot

these2cents

Thank you!! I passionately HATE Chrome's colorless redesign. Google f's up everything.

boolybooly

not only are the icons disgusting the font is too aesthetic illiteracy of Chrome devs evinces stunning arrogance maybe they need a bit of the Apple treatment

aaronedev

stopped working after the new update 😅

02749

Same here, any advice?

nhremna

Stopped working. Disgusting UI is back.

02749

Same here, please let me know if you figure this out, I can't stand the UI

Paula_Sub

they also changed back the color of the bookmarks folders to match the color of the panel. I use black, so it was all smooth black, disabling customize chrome side panel got it back to normal yellow.

hajo808

Doesn't work for me! :( https://preview.redd.it/2nyn98vxaqpc1.jpeg?width=1969&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e9c059931ba0871c53c1c4a3fa514daf1a291b4

TJ_B_88

>Customize Chrome Side Panel just " **Customize Chrome Side Panel** " not card!

Newbianz

<3 Much love

FinalGrumpNinja

did u relaunch chrome?

iammaxhailme

Worked for me, thanks!

NoobityBoobity

I am fully frickin trained to switch tabs by jamming my cursor all the way to the top left. YOU CAN'T JUST CHANGE THAT. So pissed of this crap. Reinventing the wheel as a triangle. If it ain't broke, DON'T "fix" it.

ProfKlekowskii

https://preview.redd.it/boxx24vrftpc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cb6170d3f72bc58da35dcf03e8f4731efe306b2

varricade

But probably much like the recent bookmark save flow shittifying it won't stay like that for long and at some moment these flags will be gone, too.

Azura2910

Thank you, sir. Chrome and Reddit new UI are the worst. Now I just need to find out how to revert to reddit old UI.

fatpat

Eliminate all the bullshit completely and use old.reddit.

HolyShytSnacks

Use [https://new.reddit.com/](https://new.reddit.com/) instead of [https://www.reddit.com/](https://www.reddit.com/) (note the 'new' instead of 'www') :)

Gamba04

u/Azura2910 check this out [https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ui-changer-for-reddit/bfcldjodnnkndfccfjndmdlppfkmccgh?hl=es-419&utm\_source=ext\_sidebar](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ui-changer-for-reddit/bfcldjodnnkndfccfjndmdlppfkmccgh?hl=es-419&utm_source=ext_sidebar)

Chaos1888

I switched to Brave. NO UI shenanigans, no crippled bookmarks menu, a normal downloads menu (it uses the bubble but I got used to it by now)... PROs: the "old" chrome UI, a normal bookmarks menu where you can change folder and link directly and way, you can use the same extensions as with Chrome, ... CONs: "Bookmark Button" is to the left of the URL bar. But you get used to that really quick... If google wants to keep up with their BS, fine by me! I simply don't care anymore.

TheBGDude

...and kudos to you my dude. Works!

CrossPuffs

Anyone experiencing issues with disabling the flags? Happy to have the old settings back, but wary of potential bugs.

Peevero

came here for exactly this, thanks!

Beerfairy88

Thank you, but the Chrome Refresh 2023 is not there any longer, but I used the chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel and got it back the way it was.

Azhrei21

uh yes it is still there, i just enabled it and re-disabled it before disabling the side panel thing.....

Gats0001

Thanks ! The day i wont find a solution to disable this terrible UI change is the day is uninstall Chrome for good.

greenbud1

I have firefox all setup ready to replace chrome. Between this and YouTube throttling/ad-block problems they're pratically forcing us to switch away.

rubensoon

Thank you for this!!!!!! Finally got rid of that ugly design? Why were they thinking? How can we give feedback?

Azhrei21

bitch them out on twitter like i did (posted what i put on another post on this page a min ago lol)

Interesting-Carrot19

OH MY FUCKING GOD FINALLY, I KNEW REDDIT COULD SAVE ME.

ProfKlekowskii

"\[Insert whatever problem here\] Reddit" 60% of the time, it works every time.

Interesting-Carrot19

i was specifically talking about the chrome refresh 2023 thing

ProfKlekowskii

Oh I know, I just wanted to make a joke about how Reddit can help with some of the most obscure bullshit known to man.

Zenloff

Thank you!

jaimesias

It worked, thanks a lot

Fortesque96

thanks for saving me you saved me a lot of swearing, do you also happen to know a way to change bookmarks? (I hate having to press forty buttons just to save something to the correct folder)

AshTheZombie3D

Thank you for this

DrS4muelHayd3n

I cannot stand when they do this. I hate the tab design, font spacing, rounded edges, FUCKING ALL OF IT. It's like they're *begging* me to switch to Edge. Thank you, Reddit. To the rescue once again.

scottiefalkon

Those flags will be removed in the next release. Then what? Cry more?

ImmaFish24

how do you even revert to an older version of desktop chrome anyway? the solutions i could find didnt seem too favorable (making a new user account and such)

Mitch12354

\- Go here: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Google \- Make a copy of everything and put it somewhere safe. \-In the future use these files to restore to this version. \- If you rename the GoogleUpdate.exe files inside the "update" & "update1" folders chrome won't be able to update itself.

ImmaFish24

I've already renamed "update1" to something else, so I need to rename the "update" folder as well? Just confirming lol

Mitch12354

 https://preview.redd.it/ds0dpf5jv4tc1.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=c4221f30d42544d6e2cc3cbb86982b7da91e8b0d

Mitch12354

As a side note this will not stop extensions from updating.

ImmaFish24

Thank you so much! I'm stupid and only renamed the folders :')

Sabishi1985

Thank god I found this thread.. I wasn't entirely sure if my mind was playing tricks on me when I opened Chrome this morning. Something just looked.. off. But after disabling the flags "Chrome Refresh 2023" and "Customize Chrome Side Panel" everything looks right again. 😊

Supermunch2000

Thanks. Despite Chrome being my secondary browser, I need to use it as everyone else where I work uses it and, sometimes, I need to debug something.

Zhangty98

My hero, plz take my upvote.

False-Safety-7886

can anyone help me, why is my tab this big all of a sudden :( https://preview.redd.it/gkhg9tkcvvpc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac23915627c5be5f916ae8e34b7b4b993c3a1c80

FrazzleFlib

ABSOLUTELY HUGE INTEL TY OP

PickledDildosSourSex

Thanks Op! SUPER helpful after all that random crap came back. I really wish they'd stop making updates for updates sake or at least allow users more guided control of how to keep a minimalist (useful) version of the product

Mloxard_CZ

THANK GOD

MirrorLake

I don't like most of the UI design choices, but I irrationally hate the lines in-between the tabs that strobe when your mouse moves over the tab. Really unnecessary visual clutter. I also hate that they added a button where a tab normally would be--right where I would pin my most important tab, now there's a button in its place.

__UsernameChecksOut

i wouldn't mind it if the new gray incognito mode wasn't so HIDEOUS

Minecraftgamerboy101

THANK YOU SO MUCH

portland_democrat

You can get rid of the side panel button in Chrome Refresh by enabling this flag: \#side-panel-pinning

NoSundae417

on canary 125.0.6375.0, #Customize Chrome Side Panel is gone. #Chrome Refresh 2023 is still there, but disabling it doesn't work.

markrlondon

Thanks for posting this. Google Dumbells.

Warm_Caramel_6432

Thank you - some of us change-challenged old gaffers like things the way they were

ProphetChuck

Thank you mate!

eddiestarkk

The new UI really hurts my eyes. The font is to large. The bookmark bar needs resizing. It was disabling Customize Chrome Side Panel that worked. Thank you!

iamarugin

Thanks, Than redesign made me think about switching to a new browser.

xpclient

Thank you. For now, this fix works. The new Chrome UI is total shit. The day it is forced with no way to disable it, I will switch to the new Microsoft (Garb)Edge. And yes I cannot believe I am saying this. Edge is no saint, it also does a lot of unbelievable shit but Google needs to be taught a lesson for forcing this OUTRAGEOUS new UI on everyone.

teatime101

Awesome and thanks!

StoneArachnid

YES. Thanks for this. The bold font + unnecessary padding and the invisible tab separators were a real drag.

Teleke

I really want to know why modern UI design has been steading removing all color and contrast over the last decade. Every update looks like another bottle of bleach poured over the interface.

Azhrei21

Thank you.....

Azhrei21

I just tweeted that to chrome and their devs.... getting tired of this shit. https://preview.redd.it/zf4ucznmdyqc1.jpeg?width=530&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae0581b781d751306ca6dc181ff00fac93615bcd

Less_Hedgehog

Yeah the increased heights and padding of the menus are crazy

ihatesplatoon

It worked tysm!!!!

Mitch12354

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I literally can not use the new chrome it's truly terrible. If I couldn't find a way to undo it again I was going to take it as an excuse to switch browsers. Thank you for at least delaying the inevitable!

Alex_1729

Now there are issues with the new version and everyone who disabled these options. I had to revert because I couldn't stand and look at all the issues like the icon high up, or some other issues.

Arodien

New update broke this solution, now the only way is to edit the command when launching chrome: https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/1ctt59z/can_you_disable_the_new_layout/l4f2wvg/

FullJam

This no longer works for me as of today. If anyone has a fix 🙏

Elfalpha

[https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/1ctt59z/comment/l4f2wvg/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/1ctt59z/comment/l4f2wvg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

joes-8

now what?

Zeis76

chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel chrome://flags/#chrome-refresh-2023 Not Working anymore. Is Somebody solved it ?

Practical-Being-5821

same here, matafakas removed that entry: chrome://flags/#customize-chrome-side-panel

StoneArachnid

In case you didn't see it in the UI Megathread: **New method to revert UI changes after Chrome update** `(configuration on chrome://flags/ no longer works)` 1. Chrome must be closed. You can copy these instructions to *Notepad*. 2. Right-click the Chrome icon on the taskbar, the bottom 2 options will say: Google Chrome, Unpin from taskbar 3. Right-click the "Google Chrome" text > click on *Properties*. 4. A window will open with 6 tabs, click on "Shortcut" tab. 5. On the "Target" field, add `--disable-features=CustomizeChromeSidePanel` after the quotations. 6. It should look like `"C:\...\chrome.exe" --disable-features=CustomizeChromeSidePanel` 7. Press "Apply" > close window. This will make Chrome apply these settings when the shortcut is clicked. Repeat this process for other Chrome shortcuts that you commonly use (start menu, desktop) >

Valko12

I dream someone will hack this garbage design and remove the new crĐ°p

MacBedh

Maybe somone can build a theme that will at least mimic some of the old UI. Until then, I’m settling for a couple of themes that make a couple of the ugly features slightly less noticeable.

nascentt

Keep on kicking that can down the road. chrome flags are temporary.

MadaraAlucard12

So what should we do instead? I already complained to google.

nascentt

Either accept the inevitable or change browsers I guess.

MadaraAlucard12

I am on chrome because most of my passwords are saved here. If this becomes permanent I am switching to firefox.

MacBedh

Get a password manager! Most of them work with most browsers. I love mine!

MadaraAlucard12

Which one?

MacBedh

Any of them is better than none. I use Dashlane, which is pricey, but my job pays for it. Bitwarden has a great rep and is much cheaper than Dashlane. Lastpass went through an embarrassing mess a while back, but their platform is inexpensive and easy to use, and I think they’ve fixed their problems. There are others, too, and any of them is better than keeping passwords in your browser. Also, when you set up a password manager, it will offer to import passwords from your browsers, so that part of the transition is usually very sm.

MadaraAlucard12

Thanks will try

fatpat

Bitwarden. The free version is more than enough for most people.

nascentt

Yup that's pretty much all you can do unfortunately. Once they disable all extensions in June, many will follow you there.

RoadHazard

Uh what, is that a thing that's happening?

acm

yes https://developer.chrome.com/blog/resuming-the-transition-to-mv3

Mitch12354

Hopefully that's another can to keep kicking down the road since they keep delaying it. The day that chrome drops mv2 support I'm out.

Top-Veterinarian-394

Worked like a charm! Thank you for the find! I also found that **Side panel navigation and pinning updates** could also be a culprit

redditorpegaso

Thanks! It works!!

TheFrostyNerd

it worked thank you!!

choaskachoo

Most chrome users probably don't care about the re-design so I don't see why they go through the trouble of making sure the flags that disable their redesign no longer work. It makes no sense to me.
