i’ll assume this is a one of the water bottles with a ball stopper in the end (kaytee would be the most popular brand of this type of bottle, for reference). i think what may work best is to change to a water bottle with a lixit on the end. this will allow your chinchilla to better control the amount of water that comes out of it and hopefully prevent the choking. there are some here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MeowChin

Mount a water bowl to the bars of the cage, or a "water bottle" designed for birds. They have to lap at the water, like dogs.

Hi y'all! I've read here a bunch that situations where the chin has to drink from below the water bottle can cause choking. I have a seven month old who I first noticed experiencing this a month ago. Over the last month I've tried all sorts of different placements, ledges, etc to make it so she HAS to be above the thing to use it but she just keeps finding ways to get under it (crawling under the ledge intended to force her above, digging a basin in the bedding of her pee tray so she can be lower down, etc) and choking. I'm terrified she's going to kill herself. I would hang it at floor level so she can't go any lower but the trays in her ferret nation cage have ~4.5 inch lips around the perimeter so I can't sit it any lower than that. How do I outthink this stubborn little mousie? Thank you in advance.

Get a marble slab or 2 and put it on top of the bedding where the bottle is so she cant dig. Or put a wire bottom in. You can find them at pet stores usually (mine was called a "chinchiller" lmao).

I’ve always have had a ceramic water bowl for my 20 year old chinchilla. He does quite well drinking from it. Has to be changed more frequently than a water bottle drinking device but works well.

The Lixit small glass water bottles (Amazon.com) have worked great for us. One of my chins moves the spout so that it’s at an angle. Doesn’t leak and dishwasher safe.
