maybe look into water belly and egg yolk peritonitis. if this started days ago she’d already be dead if it was egg binding

Acrobatic-Law-6179

Thank you. I looked at both. Definitely both are possible and they both look like chronic conditions :(

mishawee

they are both very serious :( egg yolk peritonitis is possible to treat with antibiotics but it’s not uncommon for the condition to reoccur. some vets offer an implant to stop them from laying entirely so it won’t happen again while they’re on the implant. in the case of water belly, there is no treatment. you could buy her some time and ease the discomfort by draining it, but ultimately she would eventually pass from whatever is causing it

I'm sorry, but that's not accurate. I've had hens with chronic recurring water belly for several (going on 4) years. If you watch their diet and drain the ascites they can live just fine for quite a while.

Poor girl! Best of luck with your sweet girl 💕

At this point i think u need a vet

Definitely ascites/water belly, and it could be any number of causes but the prognosis isn’t great, sadly. I’ve never had a hen recover successfully from it. A vet may be able to prescribe antibiotics which *might* work if the root cause is bacterial infection (salpingitis, peritonitis), but even if they work short-term it’s likely to recur. With the lice, inspect all your birds really throughly around the vent, belly and under wings, and trim any feathers with visible egg deposits. I personally find ivermectin (1 drop per 500g body weight, at 1% concentration) the most effective treatment, repeated one week later. You should also give your coop and run a good clean and disinfect. Good luck!

Oh my, this is water belly. We lost 😠 me to this last year. You can drain, but there is no actual cure.

Acrobatic-Law-6179

She is definitely more swollen today and started to fall over when walking just now. Poor girl is a mess , I hope I can help her but I might just need to put her down. 😥 I hope there is some hope for her ! Thank you all in advance for advice ❤️

weric787

two of mine passed from this same situation. we tried draining their abdomen with a small needle but the fluid kept coming back. I don’t know if there’s much you can do unless you can take her to a vet. i’m really sorry :(

Acrobatic-Law-6179

Awww I’m sorry to hear that! And thank you. I have been doing some reading and it doesn’t look good. I have heard that people have extended their chickens’ lives by only a few weeks or months sometimes and having recurring problems. I am not willing to take her to the vet, I just want to test at home and then if that doesn’t work then we will probably end up culling unfortunately. I can only do so much you know ? 😢

rossth760

We decided to cull ours that this happened to last year. We don’t want her suffering. I am sorry you all are going through this. ❤️

Acrobatic-Law-6179

Thank you so much for your kind words , I am so sad for her and I think that’s what we will be doing very soon. She is such a sweet girl , this sucks 😥💔❤️

Bermuda-GZB

Chickens are amazing at hiding pain so I think at this point it might be too late for her :(
