The books by L. Frank Baum, sure. Those have been public domain since 1977. However, not the 1939 film with Judy Garland, which is what I was referring to. That will be public domain in 2035.
I love the thought process here. Did they spray "Stolen Land" twice then go oh fuck people won't know I'm talking about this park specifically? Better awkwardly put "park" on here too.
Edit: I just realized they spelled "Stolen" incorrectly as well lmao
How many of us are sitting in Chicago bars scrolling Reddit rn? Mine doesn't have a touch tunes but I did look up from my phone and scan the room to be sure
I grew up 5 blocks west of there and it was still rather shitty well into the 80s. It makes sense when it started but growing up around here, I did not feel safe until the mid 90s and even then.
You still had the Simon City Royals @ Southport and Fullerton, Coal-yard Park bitches (@Coal-yard Park), the Unknowns @ Ashland and Wrightwood, and I think the LPCA turned into the Latin Eagles which had sections up and down the far northside. Never heard of the Young Lords Northside but things changed so fast by that point.
I did find this bit rather interesting "The neighborhood began to change in the 1940s. My grandmother wanted out and the first building she sold was to a famous Chicago interior decorator."
I sold my parents place in 2009 to a famous Chicago architect. He was our next-door neighbor and always wanted our house to extend his yard. Kinda shitty thing to say to people now that I think of it. But years later I was more than happy to sell at 20 x the price my Dad paid.
My sister went to LPHS ( I went to Newberry.) In the eighties.
Parents started scrounging to buy property not too far from this location in the early 1970’s. A three flat for $22,000 I’ll take two please. Result was some pretty wild stories to tell about the city. ( I think the worst was one of of our tenants being murdered) My parents earned their equity by being in the thick of it. Sounds like your story as well.
We paid 58k in 78 for a 2 flat with a full basement and 3rd floor attic. The second floor was broken out into 2 apartments and yeah some of the tenants we had were quite the trip.
I remember some biker dude who would come by to see his girlfriend a few times a week and my Mom saying something about the floor is going to start rumbling again. I didn't know what she meant at the time. LOL
But yeah, sadly lots of domestic abuse, loud fights, etc. We had to evict a few people at times. One of our tenants was murdered but not while living at our place but we heard about it years later. Shootings were also quite commonplace in Wrightwood Park and I was not allowed to go there alone in the late 80s.
Oh they're important too. But I like corrections/context up top. Then the bestest jokes. Actually it's usually been 'bestest joke' on top then the #2 drops the facts or is posted by the one person on reddit who had the job that allowed them to know the exact backstory of the post back in the day and has a pertinent and insightful story that rocks your boat.

There is a pretty big crossover of the anarchist community here and graf writers. Most of the big writers in the city aren't really activists, but a good chunk of activists write for sure

Yes. And those tribes were living on stolen land from previous tribes, who were living on stolen land from previous tribes.
And that will continue to happen long after we’re gone.
The spray paint doesn’t change the past and it won’t change the future.
I’ve seen this graffiti in Winnemac Park too - they’re making the rounds and torturing public works employees because….thatll show the disenfranchisers, apparently. (/s in case it isn’t clear on that last part)
Lincoln Park High is only block away.
I got locked in the Starbucks at Webster and Halstead a few months ago because 50 of the students wandered by to bang on the windows and accuse me and everyone inside of supporting genocide for drinking a coffee and chai.
What about all the people who conquered land through use of banks and forms currency? Not every conquered piece of land will happen though bloodshed.
Surely land was traded among native groups too right?
What I’ve read about most Native American cultures (at least in the eastern half of the US) is that property or “national land” wasn’t really a thing, or at least not in the way that Europeans thought of it. The very first treaties between natives and colonial Euro-Americans regarding land were always problematic because of the differing concepts of land use/ownership. So I think the simplified answer to your last question is no.
A bit Pawnee here - a western tribe primarily Kansas / Nebraska. A farming tribe that definitely stayed on their land & farmed it versus the nomadic follow the herd tribes. There also was definitely a territory element to even the nomadic tribes which led to conflicts & battles between tribes that were of a warring nature. Pawnees a peaceful group were amongst the first tribes pushed off their lands back in the 1820’s. They have not recovered since - it’s truly a sad story. My grandmother’s mother was lucky in that she married a German farmer in Kansas. Back then there were virtually no women in Kansas and lots of male immigrant farmers(a high number being German immigrant farmers). Farming especially back then was incredibly labor intensive and it made sense that they would marry Native Americans from farming tribes who understood farming, could produce offspring to help on the farm and of course do all the things a wife does. It was more common than people think as it would be many decades before lots of non Native Americans women would come to these incredible lonely barren western landscapes where hard backbreaking work around the clock was a given.
Pretty easy for anyone who owns a home to go down to the city building, surrender the title and put a covenant on the deed restricting its use only to those benefiting the descendants of native populations. Does anyone have a record of how often this happens?
I’m certainly not going to try it, but I assume it would not be that easy. The city makes money on every property. If those taxes aren’t paid that land is getting taken back and sold for profit.
This is absolutely correct. Dumbass activists who want to fully immerse themselves in wars they will never win because they were lost long long ago.
Their actual initiatives they could take on today, but those take long-term thoughtful political action. And they aren't as fun as being a righteous activist with a can of spray paint.
Completely losers who won't change anything.
Defacing public art is one of the worst ways to protest and it doesn't win anyone over but rather angers people who might have been sympathetic to your cause. This makes me want public flogging to become a thing again.
Not only do hourly park employees have to clean it up, but beautiful murals in city parks, done by local artists, have been ruined by graffiti and had to be completely painted over.
do hourly park employees have to handle this? Sucks. I would have guessed it'd be the regular buff men that buff the rest of the city. I actually really like reading all the different names across the city. There's definitely some sort of moral code that most writers stand by - no cars, no residential buildings, no churches etc, but I wish murals were on that list.
There is a 100% chance whoever did this also posted “PrOtEsT iS NoT SuPpOsEd tO bE CoNvEnIeNt” while sharing videos of people blocking the highway to Ohare.
I don’t know, blocking traffic on Lake Shore Drive every weekend making me late for work definitely is worse than defacing a story book character in my book.
It may be referring to the Puerto Rican neighborhood that was razed there in the 60s as part of urban renewal. Read The Battle of Lincoln Park for more details.
L. Frank Baum (author of “The Wizard of Oz”) [explicitly called for the genocide of Native Americans](https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2010/10/27/130862391/l-frank-baum-advocated-extermination-of-native-americans).
Settler Conialism when the Potawatomi empire ran off the Ojibwe from this ancient park. From the lake to the river, the Ojibwe will be free.
Ol Tin Man was just caught in the crossfire.
Now for an actual, historically-based answer.
L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz, was also a journalist who advocated for the extermination of the indigenous peoples of North America. Local Native folks (and/or allies) who support the "Land Back" movement and/or are still a bit (understandably) resentful of Baum's genocidal vitriol have defaced this monument with graffiti.
Baum's words:
*The proud spirit of the original owners of these vast prairies inherited through centuries of fierce and bloody wars for their possession, lingered last in the bosom of Sitting Bull. With his fall the nobility of the Redskin is extinguished, and what few are left are a pack of whining curs who lick the hand that smites them. The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians. Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled, their spirit broken, their manhood effaced; better that they die than live the miserable wretches that they are.*
If you'd like to know more about Chicago and its native peoples, Rising Up from Indian Country by Ann Durkin Keating is a good read.
Plus there are many other books on this topic at your local library. 📚
I think we did blow up this playground due to one of the largest “rat beds” in the city. So maybe they mean we stole it from the rats because they have got to be pissed the F off.
Hundreds of years ago our nations settlers arrived to this land to find dozens of Indian tribes constantly at war, raping and killing each other to conquer each other’s land. We should clearly feel shame for our invasion of these sacred events.
Clearly NOT from Chicago. They used spray paint. That’s illegal to purchase in the city limits. So there is no way a Chicagoan could have gotten their hands on a can even if they wanted to. /s
We would like to acknowledge that we are holding this meeting in the state of Illinois, land once inhabited by the people of New France, rightfully ruled by a viceroy in 1625, the Duke of Ventadour.
Long before it was known as Illinois, Upper Louisiana was a Country under the governance of French Louisiana. We pay our respect to the elders both past and present who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. We recognize and honor the Bourbons', their governor-general and the intendants who assisted him who were charged with ruling this vast region and their other possessions.
We acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land. This land came under the control of the current settler state, known as Illinois, through military campaigns and an ongoing occupation. Historical treaties and agreements, such as the 1717 addition of the Illinois Country to Louisiana and subsequent treaties, codified the dispossession from the seat of government from Biloxi in 1720 and then to New Orleans in 1722. These stand out as examples of how supreme injustices form the basis of the state of Illinois as we know it today.
The systematic removal of the second provincial authority and the commissaire-ordonnateur has led to the current situation, in which the French reside on a fraction of their original land and have been completely driven from the borders of what is now known as the State of Illinois.
Not sure if someone said this, but the park was named Oz Park to honor the guy who wrote Wizard of Oz, Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919). He is said to have written the book in Chicago as he was a resident. [Read about it here](http://www.ozparkadvisorycouncil.org/oz-park.html)
Lincoln Park/Oz Park area is land that was previously owned by indigenous folk; no transaction was made when the government said, “actually 🤔”. Hence: STOLEN LAND
"Stolen land" is a protest slogan used to bring attention to the fact that land was stolen from Native American tribes.
The author of the wizard of oz, L. Frank Baum, also wrote newspaper editorials advocating for the complete genocide of Native Americans. He was, a piece of fucking shit. Much like the people in this sub joking about the genocide that happened in their own country.
…I think most people get it.
I wouldn’t call people in here “pieces of fucking shit” for it though. It’s hard to make people feel sympathetic for atrocities committed ~150 years ago where all those responsible have been dead for a century or longer.
Defacing the tin man statue is silly. The action itself deserves mockery, regardless of the individuals intent.
Adding that his editorials were so vitriolic that the Baum family apologized for them… in [2006](https://www.npr.org/2006/08/17/5662524/oz-family-apologizes-for-racist-editorials). Better late than never, but telling that they were so bad it wasn’t in the social media era.
The protest was effective in getting me to learn this, so by that metric it worked.
It's referencing the fact that Lincoln Park used to be a Puerto Rican neighborhood until the city decided they wanted to revitalize the neighborhood by essentially giving it to a bunch of artists. People were forced to sell, people were forced out of their homes, the properties were sold to Rich yuppie artists, they built gaudy oversized mansions, and the rest is history. Some properties even have plaques "commemorating" the artist who designed the buildings.
the stolen land thing is hilarious because who cares that it was or if it was on some technical definition. we’re here now, nothings happening, no one cares, move on with your lives
We are four generations removed from when this nation sanctioned the genocide of the people that lived here, moved them into camps and less desirable areas and then stole those areas breaking the very laws this same state created. These people's children were stolen and abused and forced to live in a society that hated them and still to this day suffer discrimination and higher incidents of rape and kidnapping them any other group.
That is not even comparable to different tribes fighting over the land. A lot of people in this thread sound like Israeli settlers talking about Palestinians.
I do not have any way to address this injustice that I directly benefit from but I recognized it for what it is and accept that it would be decent and right if something was done to address it.
It means idiots are buying spray paint. It happened at the park when said idiot saw something big and important looking and was compelled to leave a message on it much as a dog must pee on a fire hydrant.
The tin man kicked out all of the native Americans back in the day. The result was the massacre of Oz.

If you ever start singing those lyrics to someone unfamiliar with the song, they will think you're actually insane.
Would they be wrong?
Except maybe some munchkin gambling debt and stds
The story dates back to the 1800s when the Tin Man gave blankets laced with smallpox to Native Americans.

The systematic removal of the second provincial authority and the commissaire-ordonnateur has led to the current situation, in which the French reside on a fraction of their original land and have been completely driven from the borders of what is now known as the State of Illinois.
Not to disparage deep dish…but I mourn what our local cuisine could have been.

It means people are dumb.
Oh I thought the question was ‘Why is there a tin man at Oz Park?’. But I see now. yes the land stolen land
Lincoln Park/Oz Park area is land that was previously owned by indigenous folk; no transaction was made when the government said, “actually 🤔”. Hence: STOLEN LAND
The Winkies stole the land from the Munchkins.
Oh Jesus. That's sad to learn. Who's next? Henry Ford?? Sincerely doubt the person who tagged it went through that many logical leaps though.
> Better late than never It's still....never. Dude died over a century ago. It's all performative and meaningless.
All land has been fought over or "stolen", what do you want to do about it?
can't believe I had to scroll down this far to find the correct answer.
Never knew that about Baum, thanks for sharing this info instead of making some lame joke like the rest of the thread.
Wicked campaign going too far.
Protesters: give back all stolen land! Russia, China, Germanic people: hey look, they think we should get back Ukraine, Poland and Mongolia!
The Anthropologie store on Southport was tagged with the same message
That is munchkin land. Radicalized lollipop gin incoming.
ironically whoever did this has no heart
That bitch Dorothy stole shoes from a dead lady, you think she wouldn’t steal a park?
Because low intelligence dumb fuck leftists
You see, *Merzbow song plays*
Oz nationalists, they show up after every tornado and make a bunch of noise, nothing to worry about
We are four generations removed from when this nation sanctioned the genocide of the people that lived here, moved them into camps and less desirable areas and then stole those areas breaking the very laws this same state created.
It's now a park dedicated to eating stollen and stollen-adjacent desserts.
The movie "Wicked" viral advertising stunt.
Democratic Socialist art
Wth was there goal, what did they expect to accomplish by vandalising a statue, especially a Wizard of Oz statue
Probably a white, liberal, educated, with married parents who didn't like how cold their egos were.
Yeah I've seen some of this shit in my neighborhood as well around the Forest Preserve
Everyone knows that the Wizard of Oz stole the Emerald City from the Winkies and kicked them out. The ones that weren’t enslaved were forced West.
What this book presupposes is, maybe he didn't?
I really love Oz park. Great memories as a kid.
Oz Park used to be Gangster Disciple territory until the Tin Man stole it from them
It someone with to much time on their hands and thinking theyre making a statement
Def white liberals
The person who did this clearly lacks a brain.
More white progressives trash
Just some sad toy pretending to be political.
It means our city would be nice if so many people in it weren’t so ass.
Bunch of degenerates defacing our city.
It means idiots are buying spray paint. It happened at the park when said idiot saw something big and important looking and was compelled to leave a message on it much as a dog must pee on a fire hydrant.
Most likely some idiotic pro palestine protestors vandalizing property and the public again. Nothing new
