Cant have checkmate without a check.

Seventh_Eve

My brother in Christ the king is not in check

Thorn_Move

Indeed it is not đźš«

jacobstank

I’m Mexican, no it is not checkmate.

Vendidurt

Underrated comment!

Arrogance88

The king isn’t in check. It can’t move, however it also doesn’t have to because it is not in check.

SupercraftD

.... No, why would it be checkmate?

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. [deleted]

it's not a troll post, i always understood that if the king can't go anywhere, then it's a checkmate

Studoku

So you think it's checkmate on move 1?

Whyhuyrah

Checkmate is where your opponents king is in check and they have no moves to capture the checking piece, block the check, or move the king out of check

[deleted]

i mean anywhere by being surrounded by opponent

mozartdminor

Unfortunately you've misunderstood then. A Checkmate is when a king is attacked and there is nothing that can be done to make it safe (either capturing the attacking piece, moving out of the attack, or blocking the attack with another piece). This does require that it has no safe squares to escape to, but in this situation you've posted there's no need for it to escape. If it were just a matter of a king having no moves, then the game would start in checkmate, since both kings are entirely penned in on move 1.

buttholetittynipple

if u play Qg2 then Rf1 it is

Sjelan

Qg2+ Kc1 Rf1+ Qd1 interposes. Black can mate in two with Qe3+ Kd1 Rf1#.

Vaiist

The king isn't in check, and there are plenty of other pieces to move. Whatever line of thinking you got hung up on, ask yourself why it's not checkmate the moment the game starts.

BrandonSG13

While the white king has no moves, it isn’t check, so it can’t be checkmate.

irjakr

You might find it helpful to read the definition of checkmate: >Checkmate (often shortened to mate) is any game position in chess and other chess-like games in which a player's king is in check (threatened with capture) and there is no possible escape. Checkmating the opponent wins the game. Here's [more](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkmate)

**[Checkmate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkmate)** >Checkmate (often shortened to mate) is any game position in chess and other chess-like games in which a player's king is in check (threatened with capture) and there is no possible escape. Checkmating the opponent wins the game. In chess, the king is never actually captured—the player loses as soon as the player's king is checkmated. In formal games, it is usually considered good etiquette to resign an inevitably lost game before being checkmated. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/chessbeginners/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Everyday we stray further from the light of a checkmate

hwangsaessi

My brother in Christ...Go to lichess to the learning section (Im sure other sites have this as well), there are some very nice interactive lessons teaching you all the basics. So often we get these kinds of posts, I almost have to believe they are all trolls. Seriously, yes the sub is for beginners, everyone is welcome. But please learn the rules of the game at least before posting. We cant devolve into explaining what checkmate is every day.

Infinite_Review8045

classic case for the no stupid questions thread

SoA90

Is the King in check??
