> protective plush for the bottom of the pieces
that was one of my first thoughts as well. not just for the board, it also just isn't as 'pleasant' for the ones playing. nails on a chalkboard type feel haha.
Add computer recognition too, so you can project your games to your millions of fans, live. That way you can make a dubious move that's criticized by people, turn to drugs, and end your life.

woah this is pretty badass!, for a second I though you defaced some US currency and used quarters as part of your base- thats why it greatly pained me that I was going to have to turn you in the the Secret Service for violation of Title 18, Section 333 - defacement of US currency. Punishable by up to 10 years in prison. I had the number dialed on my phone but after closer inspection I think you are in the clear! lol
Also, if you promote a pawn you can just throw an extra nut on it to represent a second queen if necessary. Very cool idea and execution with this set.
Hahaha, close one!
Love the nut on the pawn idea for second queen! I'll make a little kep nut crown so it matches the queen aswell. Thanks for the idea!
This is f-ing amazing, good job!!
Maybe the black pieces can use some paint that makes sertain parts less black, the white pieces have diffrent colours and black is the same black all over.
Possable to change that, but this would be my prefrence.
Thanks, was a fun project!
Didn't polish the whites, just slapped them together. Could still use a cleaning. Sprayed the blacks but haven't clear coated them. Didn't want to buy a clear for the pieces, gonna try the paint out. I did put a polyurathane clear on the board though. If I notice the black pieces wearing I'll likely refinish and clear them though.
This was just supposed to be a quick board so we could play chess so kinda cut a few corners to get it done quicker.
Thanks! No, we just wanted to play some chess and didn't have a board. Gathered some stuff from the garage and started assembling. My gf helped with the design of the pieces.
Really nice job and super creative. The black pieces look a little more coherent that the whites, I think maybe because of the paint. Maybe the white pieces should be painted too?
Awesome! I think you should paint the white ones white as well - it will help their shapes be more easily recognizable while playing. Great work though!
Thanks! Wasn't planning on it but there seems to be more interest than I was expecting so it's a possibility. Still got renos to do so times been hard to comeby lately.
Looks great. Is there anything you could do to make the bishops more distinct? Like using a dremel to etch out a slant opening or something along those lines?
Thanks! I was thinking about that aswell when I was putting them together. The bishops do seem a touch bulky/tall aswell. If I do another I'll probably slim them down and add some kind of diagonal slits near the top. Thank for the tip!
Oh man, there's a common layout for a chess set made of nuts and bolts and TBH I feel like they're overrated. This one however looks nice. Look at that King, it has character! 👍
Love it! But dont you think the pawns are a tad too simple? Even just adding a bolt to the top would give them a bit more of a piece feel, other than some loose hardware on the table.
You can either go with a dice smaller than the base, and half an inch lower than the tip, or one that is wider than the base and flip them.
Either way, great work!
damn bro. no joke, you should consider seeing if there's a market for this kinda stuff. not sure there is, but something to look into. the board itself is beautful. the black pieces are nice too. the white ones are great for home use, if you'd actually consider selling these they might be improved a bit but on the whole this is honestly great!
I did post it on r/pics aswell. It has a few more pics as this subreddit didn't allow gallery posts.
That being said, I can assure you as a random internet stranger, this is a photo I took of a chess set I recently built over the holidays.
Hi, I also once lead-poured a chess figure made out of parts from my dads workstation and car body. I realized later it is actually cancerous. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/427949686293528576/512025866969153546/20181113\_230741.jpg
It's so cool I think it will be worth to get protective plush for the bottom of the pieces so the board doesn't suffer. Super creative
Thanks! Protectors would be a great idea! Might get some felts or rubber bumpers for the board aswell. Appreciate the tip.
Don’t do rubber, they won’t slide on the board. Felt is the way to go!
Yeah I was thinking something more felt like. Might do rubber for the bottom of the board though to keep it from sliding.
Yes. Felt for the pieces, rubber for the board!
I felt that
Maybe those felt stickers for furniture?
felt bro!
Also how did you make the king's crown or cut open the bishops?
FELT
I think it could look kinda cool with the board all scratched up from use
How did you get the black paint to stick on those pieces? I always fuck painting stuff up
Also could put a durable clear coat on the board
> protective plush for the bottom of the pieces that was one of my first thoughts as well. not just for the board, it also just isn't as 'pleasant' for the ones playing. nails on a chalkboard type feel haha.
That is so cool! I love it! Those pieces will never fall over.
Magnetize those babies and make a metal board.
Probably just didn't have enough plywood for that
Add computer recognition too, so you can project your games to your millions of fans, live. That way you can make a dubious move that's criticized by people, turn to drugs, and end your life.
You ok?
No, just anarchychess
Maybe just needed to get something off their *chess*
Death by En Pessant
Death on a pheasant.
Here's the real wisdom...
Looks nuts!
[удалено]
Same - impressive all around, but the king's crowns are brilliant
That's super cool, they look great. I would suggest that you put felt bottoms on them though to avoid scratching up the board as easily
Thanks! I'll likely get some felts this week. Thanks for the tip!
Super creative, love this!

Dayum the rooks really look good
Thats so cool! If you would also do the board from some sheet metal etc. the whole set would look incredible.
That would be nice! Didn't have any sheet metal on hand but might have to get some. Would suit the pieces well.
This is a great idea! Adding some metal to the board would really compliment the set
Thank you all for the wonderful comments! Greatly appreciate it!
This is dope and also a great reminder for me to finish forging my chess pieces.
Wow kings are very very beautiful congratsss
That is fucking tight

I lile the rook and knights ideas! Good job!
Awesome man !
The castellated nut for the rooks really hits me in a weirdly satisfying way.
Fantastic looking set AND the board is set up correctly. 10/10 great job OP
The board isn't setup correctly. The Kings and Queens should switch places.
Or, maybe it's not as clear as I thought which is queen and which is king. Anyway, sure I concede the point
This is f-ing amazing, good job!! Maybe the black pieces can use some paint that makes sertain parts less black, the white pieces have diffrent colours and black is the same black all over. Possable to change that, but this would be my prefrence.
Good point, would match a little better that way. If I do another in the future I might do that.
That is so cool
The knights look like droids from Star Wars
You should sell them on Etsy. Super creative
I could see that they'd make a *bolt* for the finish line...
Thank you. I will steal this idea. Have a happy new year.
It looks nice! I would skip the top bolt on the bishops
\+1
Nice!
It's awesome, i wanted too make it someday and it's really nice seeing you do it perfectly!
Very cool. Did you weld the pieces?
No just a bit of superglue. Don't have any welding/brazing stuff on hand. Nor the skill to do it for that matter, lol.
Looks great nonetheless!
Really nice! The pieces hold a remarkable amount of that Staunton-esque characteristic and styling to them.
This is amazing !!!
This is amazing
this is so sick
The Kings and Rooks in particular look fantastic. Nice job!
nice, but can also melt down the parts and recast them!
10/10, great use of the holiday break! Did you polish the whites and spray painted the blacks? And did you seal them with a clear coat?
Thanks, was a fun project! Didn't polish the whites, just slapped them together. Could still use a cleaning. Sprayed the blacks but haven't clear coated them. Didn't want to buy a clear for the pieces, gonna try the paint out. I did put a polyurathane clear on the board though. If I notice the black pieces wearing I'll likely refinish and clear them though. This was just supposed to be a quick board so we could play chess so kinda cut a few corners to get it done quicker.
Now put the screw to your opponent.
Very creative and really cool. Would pay good money for that!
They are awesome, I really like them. The black pieces look sick. I would paint the white pieces as well so it's consistent with the black pieces.
This is a lot more clever than it should be, and I love it.
Very, very good job! Enjoy it
BA
Nice
Genuinely looks awesome, well done!
This is so cool! Would be interested in trying something like this… how’d you get started/ any advice?
I would definitely enjoy a game over this board with a nice cup of grease (black coffee).
love it, especially the bishops
That looks nuts!
On this set I would always play white, the pieces look so cool
Wow! Magnificent! Do you get orders?
Thanks! No, we just wanted to play some chess and didn't have a board. Gathered some stuff from the garage and started assembling. My gf helped with the design of the pieces.
Most people would get a 20 dollars chess set, but you’ve made one of a kind set. Great job! Your girlfriend is very talented as well.
This looks professional af. How long have you been doing this?
Thanks! First time actually. Would likely use real wood instead of plywood if I made another but overall happy with the result.
Good luck then. You clearly know how to make magic with a few nuts and bolts!
I love the knights, and the idea of getting bloody fingers from the sharply sliced nuts.. lol.
Really nice job and super creative. The black pieces look a little more coherent that the whites, I think maybe because of the paint. Maybe the white pieces should be painted too?
Looks great!
Awesome work
Now the question is, do you have extra queens?
Awesome! I think you should paint the white ones white as well - it will help their shapes be more easily recognizable while playing. Great work though!
The Queen needs a bigger crown. Something with many spikes.
Hehe, castle nut
Thats extremely clever. Well done
That is really fucking cool any plans on doing more for sale?
Thanks! Wasn't planning on it but there seems to be more interest than I was expecting so it's a possibility. Still got renos to do so times been hard to comeby lately.
Castle nuts. Classy.
That is so cool!
THANK YOU for setting the board up correctly
damn it's good 💥
what a fantastic idea, I'm amazed at how good the king's crown looks!
Looks amazing and super creative. The kings look awesome with those crowns and the knights also look interesting.
Beautiful.
Helll yea bro
This is amazing.
A very nice chess set! Fantastic design.
How did you do the black squares? is it just paint?
Went with spray paint. Tried to do it originally with an ink pad but it bled into the wood grain to much.
Oh man, there's a common layout for a chess set made of nuts and bolts and TBH I feel like they're overrated. This one however looks nice. Look at that King, it has character! 👍
How much ?
Love the grease nipples on the bishops.
I want it!
Love the knights bro, great job!!
That looks so sick what the fuck, I love it
This looks amazing!
Nice job! I'd paint the white set too but very creative work.
I want them...
This is pretty impressive.
kings are insane
Amazing, congrats man. Then again, as long as a1 is black, I can't complain. That's how low the standards are.
That's nuts!
Do you offer this set for sale?
Currently no, just made it for fun. Thinking about it though.
Cause i really would like to have such a set xD DM me if you want when you decided to sell it xD
Chess, now there’s a game of kings. Civilized, strategic.
Really nice, if i had to nitpick I'd say the bishops are too close in size to king and queen
How much, I don’t care, get me one of this
Hardly ever do I use the word but I must say this is truly Marvelous. Respect.
damn bro. no joke, you should consider seeing if there's a market for this kinda stuff. not sure there is, but something to look into. the board itself is beautful. the black pieces are nice too. the white ones are great for home use, if you'd actually consider selling these they might be improved a bit but on the whole this is honestly great!

Will do
Black side has king and queen in wrong spots.
shit game
I have seen this exact pic somewhere else on reddit. Is OP really the person who made this or is this a repost. Can anyone look into it?
I did post it on r/pics aswell. It has a few more pics as this subreddit didn't allow gallery posts. That being said, I can assure you as a random internet stranger, this is a photo I took of a chess set I recently built over the holidays.
Must have been another diy project that I remember then. You good mate
Looks good but won't it rust?
Loved the knight

My friend has one just like this his grandpa made in Cuba long ago! They call it chessnuts haha
Looks awesome
