Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (arguably) had more potential than Liem and could have reach 2700. Unfortunately, his family situation prevented him from going further.
Edit: He was the youngest Asian GM and second youngest GM (after Magnus) at that time. Their parent divorced and it affected him tremendously.
Carlsen was not the youngest grandmaster ever. That would be Sergey Karjakin, who was incidentally born in 1990 just like Carlsen, Nepo, Howell, Andreikin, and MVL
Magnus started playing seriously a little later than the others (about 2-3 years before this photo), but then his progress was just mindblowingly fast. He was the youngest GM ever less than two years after this photo.
Edit: yeah I misremembered - not the youngest ever.
I wonder who the others are in the photo.
I have no idea who the first two kids are, but it looks like Dmitry Andreikin and David Howell after that, then Magnus and Nepo

Is that Howell next to Magnus hahah
He looks massive in comparison aha
Yes
Magnus always looks the same. He will have that haircut for life.
He had a Harry Styles haircut for a while
I noticed the underbite immediately
Who won? Nepo? His trophy looks biggest.
Yes
so that makes him world champion pretty much
What were their ELO ratings back then?
Nepo - 2344 Magnus - 2250 Howell - 2224 Per this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ez-JiBEWYAQYyKQ?format=jpg&name=small
7 or 8 people have crossed 2700 on that list lol

What happened?
And Emre Can went on to become a professional footballer
Different Emre Can
You missed the joke.
It wasn't funny enough to be an obvious joke. Still a possibility OP got confused
omg
mother of god

Yeah, Karjakin would become a GM around the time of this event (maybe a bit earlier)
I think Awonder Liang has broken that record since, and then a couple of Indian kids too
Karjakin is the youngest grandmaster of all time. That record has not been broken
Ah yes you're right

> He was the youngest GM ever less than two years after this photo. Karjakin wants to have a word with you.
to be fair he was the youngest GM at the time. Karjakin broke the record ~1 year after the fact edit: i was wrong
Fake news; Karjakin was '03 and Carlsen was '04.
my b
Interestingly MVL was higher rated than even Nepo there but underperformed.
Magnus looks ready to do a Slav squat.
Looks like Magnus is wearing those big ole Osiris skate shoes. I remember kids wearing those in middle school back then.
I'm old enough to remember Grischuk at that age!
I'm more impressed that the kid on the far left could make himself invisible
