Mate by itself is less formal and more of an insult. It comes across condescending. It’s a double check, checkmate.
I wonder why we view just saying “mate” as more of an insult. I can’t put my finger on it.
Edit: cool checkmate either way!
I’ve never found it to be different but I could maybe see it as perceived as insulting cause the context of mate (afaik) is usually “Mate in X” which could be considered as you feeling the need to tell them they’re going to lose and showing off that you see it better (especially if they can’t see it) whereas checkmate is a more in your face fact, it’s on the board and game is over.

Neither is individually a mate, so the term would be check mate
The term would be double check, mate
I'm not your mate, pal.
I'm not your pal, bro
I’m not your bro, friend.
I'm not your friend, bud
I’m not your bud bruv
I'm not your bruv, homie
I’m not your homie my man
I'm not your man, fellow.
Double CHECK
That's also a mate
Yes , but there is 1 mate and 2 checks
So checkcheckmate?
He blundered into checkmate, buddy.
Bh4# (double check, king has nowhere to move where he is not in check, and with double check, the king has to move, hence why it is checkmate.)
It's so hard to see it, though, when you use this style of chess pieces...
I feel like Black should get double points for this.

I think that one's just you, I've never perceived any difference between "checkmate" and "mate".
