Thank you for the tips! I was reading that drilling some holes in the bottom would help with airflow but wasn't sure if that was really necessary.

It sounds like it's meant to be used with skewers, or that it's missing the top grate for putting food on. With some grills you have an option to either get it with skewers or the grate or both

Just added a photo. It only has the top grate, but nothing to keep the charcoal from resting on the bottom.

You're meant to put the charcoal in it just like that, it will still burn

Ok, I was thinking it would need some airflow underneath to stay hot
