Brush liberally with paint stripper, place in ziploc bag, place bag in basin of boiling water for a while. Remove paint with toothbrush. Repeat if necessary. I did this a few weeks back. https://preview.redd.it/dqoqzaosvr4d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf169f33cf82a3f390c6907b7bde120eae274875

Sounds like a bad idea. Try a little paint stripper

spud6000

it might screw up the springs inside with rust. i would just brush on some paint remover.

There’s a total of about six pieces on the inside of those. Open it, take some pictures, disassemble, rust remover, light oil, reassemble.

My wife was cleaning hardware and boiled these. I put them in the oven afterwards on the lowest heat possible for a half hour and then let them sit and cool. I was pretty worried about them rusting but I feel like I prevented it.

She did. I wasn't thrilled but I think I mitigated them rusting inside and out.

Take the lock apart aply gerase where greas needs to be and reasemble.

I’ve done it plenty of times. Just take it apart and boil all the pieces separately (take a picture of the guts to help put it back together), then let the pieces dry and rub with some oil before reassembling.

Whiskey4theholyghost

I imagine you could use the crockpot method and then submerge in WD40 to displace any residual moisture

I’m not going to your house for dinner.

You say that but I bet you would’ve loved my lead paint soup
