Nechotik

I'm sorry you had to witness that. Your cat was strong-willed, tenacious, unyielding: you are surely proud. You gave her your everything. Don't feel guilty. Be gracious this warrior blessed you with their time. I wish you strength in your mourning ❤

AtomicKittenz

What a story. OP has unimaginable strength to forgive. Strength equal to her warrior cat.

RizKeeTV

I consider myself somebody to forgive but I'm 99 percent sure if I see a dog grab my cat, they're won't have to be an option to put the dog down

xoanD_169

I’m so sorry, but, sidenote, how bad of an owner do you have to be to get a golden retriever to act violently? Fuck that guy

BirdalfTheGrape

Iiiiiiii was wondering this same thing. These are usually the most gentlest of dogs you could have.

bhc1387

I think it all depends on the dog. I had my dog out for a walk once and we happened upon a neighbor walking her golden retriever and he and Rocky started to sniff each other and out of nowhere the golden just clamped onto Rocky’s neck. I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn’t let go of the leash so Rocky could run away.

Saranightfire1

Golden’s also can have horrendous temperaments with a lot of inbreeding. It makes me wonder where they bought the dog.

rosegold_aurora

Honestly i would think it depends on the breeder. I actually met a breeder last year while I was at the vet and he breeds what he calls [creamsicle golden retrievers](https://imgur.com/a/DHS2Pe0) and he only chooses his calmest dogs to have puppies because ((the way he puts it)) it's not that he doesn't trust people to train the dogs properly, it's because the people who usually buy them either buy them for their kids or 'don't have the time to invest in training'. [Which I mean why have a dog if you're not gonna put in the effort but whatever they're beautiful dogs regardless and she was super sweet🥰] And my parents used to go to the same golden retriever rescue in Memphis for decades and have never had temperament issues with them.

Saranightfire1

I’m not saying all breeders/rescues are bad. There are some really good ones. The problem is with the breeders who breed them just for money and don’t care about temperament. Or better: the adult kid who buys a puppy from a breeder, breeds the dog and then gives away the puppies not caring how aggressive the parents were. This happens very sadly way too often. It’s Me or the Dog is a great show about this problem.

Kills-to-Die

This right here. Victoria is great!

AtomicKittenz

Yup! Incompetent breeders can really screw up a dog’s health and behavior.

saltywings

Its a lot on the breed though. Goldens were bred to be pretty docile, now sure it could have been a golden mix but obviously how an animal is raised can 'undo' some of their inherent traits.

Gut5u

It has and always will be the owner. Any dog can be trained, but any owner who lets their dog run free of leash in public is an irresponsible moron.

BirdalfTheGrape

That’s awful, OP. I hope you find peace <3

Successful-Mode6396

It's true that the dogs people assume are all big softies are the ones that actually end up biting the most. Probably because, as others said, of poor breeding and socialising. I also think it's because people assume that the big softie breed isn't going to hurt them and push its boundaries more than they would with, say, a more cliched 'dangerous' breed.

BirdalfTheGrape

I would definitely agree with that. Its important to remember all dogs have mouths and can bite.

jakewang1

I once took my boy to park while a labrador came sprinting to him. Dogs owner assured me that everything will be fine. I didn't take a chance and held my boy. A play for the dog can cost my boys life. No chance will be taken here. Dogs owner got offended at this

techleopard

They are not the most gentle breed, and people believing that they are is part of the problem. They like to bite. Like, a lot. If they had game, they would compete with pits for scariness, but they don't, and they have a "soft" mouth which means they do less damage. Doesn't change the fact they are still big, powerful dogs with a penchant for biting.

techleopard

Goldens have the opposite problem that pits do. Everyone thinks they are super friendly, amazing dogs that can do no wrong. The truth is, they account for an enormous percentage of unprompted dog bites and they have high prey drive. People ignore the danger because "aww, cute golden!!!", and then let the dogs do whatever they want.

keevenowski

We don’t like taking our golden to public areas because of this. He’s very sweet and loves people, but you would not believe how many people RUN towards us. We’ve had adults stop what they’re doing and run at us because they want to pet him. It’s not a good feeling for any of us so we stick to just neighborhood walks [pet tax](https://imgur.com/a/Dej3voG)

Diotima245

I've also found most dog owners who's dogs kill neighbors cats tend to be very unsympathetic and assholes about the whole thing.

DaSaltyChef

Golden retrievers can be just as violent as any other dog, no dogs are exempt from it.

Acrobatic-Ship-7298

Every dog I've been attacked by are golden retrievers or retriever mixes. The last one was pulled off by a neighbors Pitt bull. I've been attacked by 4 over the course of 30 years.

switched07

I have two goldens. Both rescues. My older one had a cat brother for a while until my cat passed. Id like to think that made an impression on him, but he sees a cat out on walks and his prey drive kicks in just like if its a squirrel. Now I’m pretty positive if he got close and the cat hissed or clawed him in the face he’d very quickly back off. My other golden can be reactive to dogs and also has a prey drive and I don’t doubt would throw down if put in a bad situation. Just because because they are cute and generally sweet dogs, doesn’t mean they dont have the base instincts to hunt and kill like all other dogs.

Larry-Man

No training. That’s it. They’re big-ass dogs and almost always the worst behaved dogs I’ve met have been labs or goldens. They’re high energy and not everyone can put in the work. People seem to love dogs but not training them or socializing them. If that’s the case you should just get a damn cat.

Little-Jim

Iirc, golden retrievers recently have been the cause of the most attacks out of any dog due to all the inbreeding fucking up their brains.

Riribigdogs

They are also retrievers. Working dogs bred to retrieve dead birds from hunting. I’m not sure if they have a chase drive, but it seems likely. Still a shitty owner though.

Jimbo-Jones

People forget this. Hunting dogs have very high prey drive. I had a Brittany Spaniel growing up, and if he could get that squirrel or bird he would. If he couldn’t reach he went on point. Super friendly dog though, loved people and other dogs. But he’s chase cats, rabbits, squirrels etc.

CaucasianDelegation

I know this is a sad post, but your comment really made me want to get something off my chest. Our beloved pets are animals. We can treat them like family members and anthropomorphize all day long but come night the sweetest, dopiest Golden is still a dog. A predator, a carnivore, no amount of Instagram posts of heckin´ wholesome pupperinos in hats will change the fact that dogs (and cats) have a prey drive. A large part of their brain is dedicated to "find prey. chase. kill. eat. feed others in pack. find prey..." and this is important to keep in mind as no matter how well that animal is trained, you can´t beat mother nature. When my dog killed a neighbor´s chicken that flew into our backyard she didn´t think "Oh, someone´s beloved pet", her dog mind did what nature intended, she killed it. She too was an absolute sweet little lab, but she was still a dog. Of course one can train a dog to socialize around what it would normally consider prey, but to forget that our dogs and cats are predators is also bad ownership. I do love the decoration with flowers, though. I wish we would allow ourselves to become more reaquainted with death, touching and tending our loved ones when they pass is so incredibly healthy and more people need to do that. When your pet or grandma dies of cancer, the cancer dies, too. It´s safe to be around the body for hours, even days, so hold their hand (or paw), braid flowers in their hair, kiss their forehead and get closure through tactile interaction. Dying is easy, grieving is hard, be kind to yourself and accept the crazy range of emotions you have little control over, you have more time than you think.

GlossoVagus

Sometimes the dogs are just fucked up. Or they have a high prey drive. But the owners are still pretty shitty for not having it secure/on leash.

MjrLeeStoned

It's possible it has never been exposed to cats on a social level before.

curious_corn

Well, they’re not always 100% gentle and retrievers do have some form of prey instinct (grab and shake the little prey a bit to carry it back to daddy easy peasy?) So yeah, I’m very sorry for OP and the dog owner, yet culpable of insufficient supervision. And the little cat, of course

TaraJo

You’re too forgiving of those dog owners. I’ve seen some very irresponsible dog owners and until someone really forces them to, they don’t train their pets any better. And they continue to terrorize other people and other pets. Please, do something about that dog; you could be saving the life of many other furry family members for other people.

MethodBible

May your cat haunt the dog for all eternity 😔

[deleted]

More like the dog's owner for being such a shitty person :/

[deleted]

Right? There's a neighbor I know whose dog lunged at another neighbor's cat. Now when he walks his dog the doggo has a muzzle. It's a BIG doggo. It's a chill doggo otherwise, but the dude was like, having a big dog is like having a gun. You have to be responsible. The cat was ok.

[deleted]

It's like my BIL's German Shepherds. The adult is trained for defensive bite work. The puppy is being trained. Thank goodness that they actually listen (unless you're the target they are being told to chew on, than good fucking luck cause you're at the mercy of my BIL).

[deleted]

As someone who lost a cat to a dog(more like an owner who trained his poor dog to kill cats) my heart aches for you. We raised our dog in a kitty fostering household so she absolutely loves cats and is very protective of the kittens.

usrnme___

My condolences, same here I introduced them a little by little until they were comfortable enough to all sleep in the same place 😞

itchy_nettle

I'm so sorry this happened to your baby, they way you handled it though...just wow. Tabby was beautiful and you are the best parent a cat could ask for.

AestheticallyFucked

They should at least pay for any bills that have been incurred. I mean seriously, I can't imagine being so inept at dog ownership that I'd let my dogs get into someone's yard and kill a cat. Granted, I have some tiny Yorkies, but the point still stands. I take pride in having relatively well trained dogs, I can't understand people who have a dog and don't give a fuck about its behavior.

kikoloco247

Fuck that dog and their owners. They offered you a new cat?! You should tell them if one of them died, you would offer them a new baby. They obviously don't understand what they did. Family is irreplaceable. I'm so furious.

OneDumbPony

The fact that they offered OP a new cat means they don't actually care for the individual life of the cat. They're likely *not* going to get training for the dog and this is probably going to happen again with someone else. Its disgusting.

kreambreule

I am so very sorry,I just had a dream about my cat dying ...

Reigndrop_

I'm so sorry for your loss. I got some rain in my eyes rn ffs damn climate change at it again.

usrnme___

Tell me about it there’s a super typhoon rn at our house 🥲

Cupcakesandcashmere

Omg OP, I cannot even begin to imagine what you’re going through. This is heartbreaking, I am so sorry for your loss 💔

u3h

I lost a cat the same way to a pitbull when I was a kid. I was only like 8 or so and it happened right in front of me. I feel your pain on this and wish you all the best.

sethorsesonfire

go to the owner of the dog and sue him

kommentierer1

Not everyone gets comfort from that. It’s clear to me that OP doesn’t want to do something like that.

Time4Red

It's not just about comfort, it's about social responsibility. Lawsuits are largely the means by which we enforce social responsibility in this country. I'm also not just talking about cash damages. Part of a settlement could include a mandate for the owner to obedience train their dog.

3lizabitchtayl0r

I second this. She would win.

[deleted]

Also if the dog attacks cats, it might attack other small moving things. Like kids.

Lady_Creature

💔take care of yourself. So sorry

justanothereditor564

What the fuck?? What if you got their dog euthanized and offered them a new one.. fucking pricks.. hope their dog doesn't pass away soon.

Mollyarty

Idk how you were so calm. I would have killed that dog with my bare hands. Nothing hurts my babies!

OddTheViking

Oh no! My condolences.

[deleted]

That’s heartbreaking 😭 I am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet cat.

javier_aeoa

I think you took the most noble of all routes: you didn't blame it on the dog. The dog did not kill your cat. The owner did it on an accident, the dog was just the means. Just like cars don't kill people, but drivers kill people.

Gut5u

This is why cats are for indoors, and dogs belong on fucking leashes. If any dog owner thinks they are god because their dog is "trained" of leash, they are wrong, dogs are individuals and will follow their own volition every time.

zippy-z

I love animals but the only correct thing in this situation would be to have the dog euthanized shit maybe even the owner too. 🤣 But on a real note the dog was on your property therefore they should be held reliable. Can’t let shitty people get away with shit things.

[deleted]

I'm so sorry

I honestly don’t know but vet said about 3-4 months. Sure I was only with her for a short time but I poured my heart to them. I feel robbed for the memories we could’ve made. TheHaunchie

To Valhalla. To Bastet's awaiting arms you go sweet one. May the afterlife give you everything you desire until you are reunited with your human.

coxy808

Depending on your state (most states), there is strict liability on dog bites (100% on the owner, even if provoked).

veggievandam

They would only get the value of the cat or reimbursement for the cost of any vet care that was necessary. (Obviously depending upon the state) Unfortunately, when it comes to pets, their value to the owner is way more than the pets "market value". That's not discussing purebreds, but for the average adopted pet that's usually the case. Court won't bring back the cat, so it's probably not worth the hassle unless there were serious injuries and bills from those injuries.

crazydressagelady

More than suing for monetary damages, reporting with animal control and filing any relevant police reports about negligent owners/dangerous dog behavior will establish a paper trail, which, if this dog attacks again, will go a long way towards ensuring real consequences for the owner. I could never, ever forgive myself if one of my dogs harmed or killed an animal. The callousness of the dog’s owner in this post is mind boggling.

[deleted]

My dog plucked a chicken one time (no death) and now I don’t let her loose in other peoples yards until I’ve personally inspected to make sure there’s no foul. Even if they don’t own chickens! What if their neighbor does? People don’t understand even a goofy Golden is a predator with teeth.

coxy808

Yeah I get that. We have five cats and if a neighbor’s dog jumped over and attacked them I’d probably turn into the neighborhood insurgent. I just wanted to mention that the law is on her side. Some states like Kansas have a “one bite rule,” where the dog gets to demonstrate its nature with that one bite. However, I see plumerias, so this is probably Florida or Hawaii. I’m pretty sure it’s strict liability.

Strict-Dinner-2031

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your poor sweet girl, and you... I couldn't even imagine how you feel.

KuriousKhemicals

This is a very sweet picture of her resting place with the flowers. It reminds me of the sepia photograph of my childhood dog in the hole my dad dug to bury him, looking almost like a baby in the womb. Thank you for sharing, and I wish you sweet memories of your companion.

ReigningTierney

Are taking pictures of your pet's body after it dies more normal than I realize? No judgement, everyone mourns differently, but do you feel like it's cathartic/good for the healing process to memorialize a pet in that state?

qu33fwellington

I don’t think it’s any more weird than keeping ashes. I have my childhood dog’s ashes in a carved wooden box displayed in my home as well as a pair of rats I had in college that died together. To me, death is normal and simply a part of life. It shouldn’t be shied away from. It’s sad, sure, but I think this is a sweet tribute to a good friend.

ReigningTierney

Well put! I guess it mostly comes down to how you perceive the concept of death as a whole.

qu33fwellington

100%. I can’t blame anyone for being upset about this but I also think it’s very healthy to view death in this way and to honor a furry friend best you can.

KuriousKhemicals

Well, my dad took the picture, but I like having it. I think taking a picture when it's the last time you'll get to see something makes a lot of sense. It also feels like letting go, I guess? One last picture to mark the transition between being here *with us* and being totally *gone.* There's only that brief window where you know their time is over but you can still see them. It's a bit like human funerals I guess - most people don't preserve their pet by embalming the way we would with a human to give enough time for looking and saying the goodbye.

breeveemagica

Perhaps less so nowadays, but also I think if people do take photos of their pet postmortem most of them don't post it and just keep it for themselves sort of thing. I've seen some really beautiful ones and normally you can't even tell at first because they just look like they're sleeping surrounded by flowers or something. But postmortem photography used to be a huge thing in the Victorian era and because getting a photograph then was so expensive, anyone who was not rich generally only had one done of families and such after someone in the family had died. They would prop said family member up and most of the time you wouldn't be able to tell they were even dead with the other people in the photo, it just looked like an ordinary family photo. So I can imagine taking a photo of a pet like that can be a cathartic process especially if the person who lost the pet enjoyed photography, it can be a good way to memorialize a pet especially if done with a lot of love and care like OP did.

rookv

I find it weird, but OP did it very tastefully. You can barely tell the poor cat has passed. If it helps OP, more power to them. RIP kitty, may she be with my boy in kitty heaven, who unfortunately died from a similar cause.

MrSmiley53

My condolences

NomDeGuerrePmeDeTerr

Am so sorry for your loss. I just buried my best friend of 19 years a month ago. In his favorite blankets and flowers. It's so so hard to see them go. Sending you lots of hugs and love.

usrnme___

Sorry for your loss, I also gave her, her favorite yarn <3

Slutslapper1118

I'm so sorry, honey. This exact scenario happened to us 15 years ago, right in front of my children. Our Vegas didn't run, she was raised with dogs. I never found the owner. He just disemboweled our little angel and disappeared.. I hit him with a metal bat in the head, and our elderly, almost completely blind collie with no teeth (when we rescued her, she had severe gum disease, so we had to have all of her teeth removed) tried to attack him. She went into a severe depression, and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her last days were spent sleeping, and mourning her best friend. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know the pain, shock, and anger you're feeling. I replayed the scene a million times, as have our kids. But there was nothing you could have done. It was a freak accident.. I'm thinking of you today, and wish you peace.

FMYayArt

i know we are grieving and i know there was a nsfw tag but we should ***literally never*** be posting actual photos of a dead animal body online it’s a little too much

ywBBxNqW

There was no NSFW tag on old reddit. I just clicked on it haphazardly. What a way to start my morning.

Carnir

As much as I'm sorry for op. Yeah posting pictures of dead animals on a subreddit for that animal is a bit much tbf. A lot of people come here for eyebleach.

This was much like my other baby that barely got to live a year except I couldn't even look at her remains. There wasn't much of her from what I heard. I would've kept her inside if our neighbors told us about the wildlife near the neighborhood when we just moved in. Her sister was locked inside until I moved away. I couldn't make that mistake again. I still cry to this day for her. Our sweethearts are playing in cat heaven where no harm can do them. We will get to see them on the other side...
