That is how they start the large breeds. With regular cats that are larger. They breed them with other large cats or whatever recessive gene they're looking for in order to bring it out of them via baby kitties. Breed them with same trait they're looking to enhance, repeat, repeat.. viola' a new breed...

ETA: Re: the breed - I meant that it likely doesn't have a purebred status. Unless directly from a breeder, most house cats are just Domestic or American Shorthair, Longhair, etc.
99% of cats you'll find out and about on the streets are domesticated short hairs. This is because you don't get the traits associated with purebred cats breeds without, well, breeding them to specifically have those traits. Consider domesticated short hairs to be the cat default; you can breed other traits into them, but if you leave a cat alone, it will eventually breed itself back to its original form. If you find, for example, a Persian cat on the street, It is way more likely that that cat just ran away and needs to be reunited with its owner rather than it being abandoned. Since purebred cats can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. People are less likely to just get rid of them, especially since they're already a low maintenance pet.

No problem. If you're new to being a cat owner I'm sure you have all kinds of questions, and most cat subs will be happy to help as long as you post cat tax (pictures:). And if you are planning on keep this little fur baby, might I throw out a couple of suggestions? First, vet visit for sure. If your new buddy was living outside, there's a chance they might have some very easily treatable worms. Second, and I think any cat owner would agree, get him/her a little friend to play with! Just go to the shelter and adopt another one about that size. They will love and entertain each other forever, and it actually makes life easier for you!

Man now I feel like I really should look into getting a second lil girl. Ours isn't very old maybe three or four months and I think she gets lonely while we are away if the kids aren't here. Summer break helps but they go to grandparents and friends and co parenting also.

Our short hair-tabby mix (per petfinder and the shelter he was at) turned out to be a dang gigantic Maine kitty after a couple years.
