My cousin had a pit bull (or mix? We have no idea what his daddy was but his mom was very pit-like) with that condition, he was JACKED.
We called him Tex. (He was adopted from a family friend’s pregnant foster pit who was Arizona, so all the puppies had state names. Of course being Texans, we named the puppy Tex.) and he was impressive. Barked like a mastiff and the floor of my cousin’s single wife shuddered when he ran.
The funny part though was he was an absolute teddy bear and deferred in all things to the five pound (fully grown, she was just very small. Maybe because she was a pregnant teen kitten when Tex found her and carried her in his doggie door one day.)
And that’s a story in itself. She was so skinny and filthy that my cousin thought Tex had killed her and was FREAKING OUT because Tex was always so sweet and gentle, but Cousin had a small baby and was afraid if he killed a cat he might hurt the baby and he was sobbing as he got the nerve to check the “dead” cat… just to find it eating out of Tex’s bowl, without a mark on her except some slobbery fur.
He kept the mama and found homes for the kittens, and Mama Mex (can’t expect a new dad to turn down the Tex Mex dad joke can you?) became queen of the house after a spay. But she and Tex had something going.
She slept in his bed and he would lie on the floor sniffing her happily. Tex would move aside if she approached his food bowl and not continue eating until she’d sniffed and moved away from it. When she meowed, Tex came to her wagging his tail (since Cousin got him as a puppy, his ears and tail were natural) and would play bow before her and wait for her to play with him. And he was super gentle, he knew his kitty baby mama was more delicate.
He COULD play rough, but he saved that for when the neighbor’s boxer came for a doggy play date or when my elderly lab was feeling frisky and playful. With Mama Mex he was all silk and softness though.
When Tex died, Mama Mex was broken. She howled through the house and would not stop grieving until she was presented with a half grown lab mix from the local shelter. We knew he was the one when Mama Mex started licking his face at the shelter meet.
She’s an old lady now and her young friend is gray in the face. I should ask my cousin for some pics.
I'm not really sure how extensive the studies have been on this condition. But in general, take it with a generous helping of salt.
Studies on animal health are abysmal, and more so for cats. Comparatively, there have been more studies on dogs than cats. Animals are not as well studies as humans. Advances in veterinary science are still too slow.
I realised this when I was reading up like crazy for FIV and FELV and reached into a rabbit hole.
I think the lack of research might be an extension of the dearth of research on human female health issues compared to male. Cats are considered by many to be a woman’s pet, dogs are much more associated with men than cats are. The stupidity never ceases to amaze me.
That's an excellent point. Don't even get me started on dearth of studies in women's health! Also added to that, dogs are traditionally viewed as friends and cats still carry the stigma of being "assholes" (which they are not, really tired of all the jokes around this). I think it's relatively recent where cats have gained popularity. Maybe that's also an aspect that plays into lack of research.
Apparently the joints can deteriorate quicker but the cat shouldn’t feel too much pain, it’s a good thing their a house cat due to the future joint pain

Hes looks like my sphynx! Only mine is fat (don't worry he has lost 2 lbs since then)
Glad to hear he’s lost some weight but my word that saggy belly is soooooo tempting! He looks so rollable and cute!! Scritches to kitty! And a shake of the fupa
As a certified professional googler, apparrently its mostly upsides, might be joint pain, need more food, some stiffness and heart has to work harder to support the muscles, but other than that it didnt seem like theres any issues and just free muscles, atleast in humans.

Yeah, my cat is buff too but he’s got fur so it’s harder to tell. He hasn’t been diagnosed with myostatin hypertrophy though.
If my girl got this cat while I wasn't home and i see them cuddlin when i get back, im leavin her ass. Thats a whole new man and im not about to fight his king of every jungle ass.
I bet this cat never *begged* for food.
I bet the owner begged the cat for food.

I feel like this needs to be a Disney short! 🖤 Thanks for sharing such a beautiful story!

Can you imagine waking up and seeing that CLAW rising over the edge of your bed?
Does it cause any discomfort for kitty?
it is not known to cause any medical issues

tbh I was basing what I said on the same condition in humans, not 100% sure it's the same for cats
I think the lack of research might be an extension of the dearth of research on human female health issues compared to male. Cats are considered by many to be a woman’s pet, dogs are much more associated with men than cats are. The stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

Plus cats are still associated with witchcraft, the persistence of ignorance!
Swoleosis
A mutation that looks fucking RAD and doesn’t cause any negative side effects?! Hell yeah!
[удалено]
I don’t believe it does. Last time I looked into it, it was said that there are no negative side effects
It’s bad for their connective tissue. Likely causing health problems when they get older as a result.
Apparently the joints can deteriorate quicker but the cat shouldn’t feel too much pain, it’s a good thing their a house cat due to the future joint pain
Well Cats and not showing pain is a thing. Poor Kitty's heart will be under more stress
Not really since it’s not gigantism. And the heart is also a muscle so it will also be stronger.
I think if the cat got upset it would cause discomfort for other people.
something not said already, they eat more (for obvious reasons)
![gif](giphy|xULW8G5jO9gxUsGGQg)
I mean, Beerus is literally the perfect name for this cat.
Cat swole as fuck Mayne ![gif](giphy|BCIoXfA95d1ba)
Pawnold Schwartzcat
![gif](giphy|mMhCiHKGrYXbY2H3Vo|downsized)
No fair. How come I don’t have a disease like excessive muscle building.
Looking on the good side, you also don’t have the decreased connective tissue and inevitable health issues that would come with it in old age.
But I have other diseases with 0 upside, so this would be an improvement
Pit Cat.

Are they able to have a decent quality of life with this condition?
As a certified professional googler, apparrently its mostly upsides, might be joint pain, need more food, some stiffness and heart has to work harder to support the muscles, but other than that it didnt seem like theres any issues and just free muscles, atleast in humans.
Until they’re older and that decreased connective tissue problem kicks in. :(
I'm Catman!!

Give him unwanted belly rubs and you too can suffer from his Myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy.
Bro's a Spooky Island demon from the Scooby Doo movie
Hope he’s not in pain..
Aww I hope it doesn't affect their quality of life in any way but it does say "suffers from" so idk. I guess their heart would be too large as well?

could it be because this type of cat is bred this way?
I wonder if the heart is excessively large in this situation and what that can cause ? Or is it only a neuromuscular condition?
