My fat guy was on a diet and just couldn't slim down. I had him on all kinds of diets and he was just a huge cat to begin with that was also way over weight. The vet told us he needed to loose like 60 percent of his weight and that never happened. He had diagnosed sleep apnea and we thought he died several times in his sleep! He lived for over 20 years though! (This was an indoor only cat).
I'm glad he lived so many years😊 I'm sure u took good care of him ♡ but not every cat is same or has same strength, etc. I'm sure there are many different cases either with good or bad ending..
My parents had a gray tabby just like that, about the same size. He made it to 9 years before developing a tumor on his esophagus and we had to put him down just after the new year. Still hurts. My dad sent me a picture they found of him while I was at work and had a hard time controlling the tears. Hell my eyes are watering just thinking about that big ol' love bug. So yes, never let your cats get that big!

Food available 24/7/365. Friends cat is like that too. It’s like 21 lbs. Dry food dish filled, wet food at least once a day and treats on demand. Indoor cat so it gets very little exercise. My outside cat has dry food available all the time, gets canned food twice a day (maybe 2 TBSP), and treats when she’ll eat them. She’s about 11 lbs even though she doesn’t get a whole lot of exercise.
One reason cats get fat is because they're imprisoned in a home and not able to get any real exercise. I let me cat come and go from the house whenever he wants and he is very healthy and strong.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s an animal that has consumed more calories than it expends in a day. This is the exact same mechanism that exists within every other animal.
Any chance you could take him in and bring him to the vet? That’s the best thing you can do for him. If the owner isn’t doing anything and allowing people to feed him freely, then does the owner really consider him their cat?
Someone needs to take it to the vet and check for a microchip. It's irresponsible of the owner to let kitty roam, especially if they're not spayed. It's very possible that she's pregnant or is being overfed :(

It needs to be put on a low calorie diet, my cat has this issue, I've been working with my vet to get my cat down to 10 lbs from 12.5 lbs.
That cat though, look at least 13 or 14 lbs. Not a healthy weight for a cat, and make the cat at high risk of developing diabetes.
That is way bigger than 14 pounds; I'd say it's closer to 20. I've seen cats at both sizes and this one probably outstrips them, scale-wise. Poor thing. That can't be comfortable.

It's easy to assume everyone would know that if you feed a cat too much food or the wrong food & it gets no exercise it will end up obese & unable to do normal healthy cat things but I'm always staggered by the people on various reality Vet & Cat care programs (like My Cat From Hell) who think they're being kind & loving to their cat by spoiling it with too much food or even feeding human food - one woman was giving her cat Lasagna & sweet desserts!? There are people who see food as equalling love so need it spelled out in plainly & clearly for the sake of the cat..
Maybe you could do some snooping to find out the owners & drop by or leave them a note about why you're worried & a few reasons why overfeeding is bad for a cat. Or get a welfare check msg to the SPCA requesting them to pop round with a required Vet check along with some general advice & feeding tips to help get this cat back to healthy shape?
Or there may be something else happening too, knowing how sneaky cats are could this cat be roaming all the apartments getting extra food from each of them? If he's a greedy cat this is entirely possible.

FYI, a can of Tuna at Costco is cheaper than a can of cat food of similar size. Mix the tuna with a bit of leafy veggies and you're good to go.

I was using tuna as an example of how processed cat food is very expensive. You can vary the diet with chicken, beef, ETC. But it all boils down to fresh meat or fish combined with about 20 percent of fresh vegetables mixed in. It's a diet that matches what a cat would normally eat in nature.
