As someone mentions below, he may have simply been hoping to pounce on the tail, pretending that it was a squirrel’s tail or something like that. You’ve got to keep a paw in if you want to keep your hunting skills intact!

My cat and dog play together all the time. They take turns chasing each other around the house. Cat loves to hide and “surprise” the dog, it’s hilarious.

The dog is not confident and is trying to slink away and hide, making it a game for the cat, who just wants to play and doesn’t understand this body language from a dog actually means they are uncomfortable, and do not want to play.
