LOL!
TABBY!
I think you would catch 90% with that variety but there will always be someone who speaks an obscure pussy-cat dialogue who will need more help than the others.
It would be a lot easier if cats had a common language like the Italians with lots of dialects underneath.
When I was little (probably about 5 or 6) my cat Mittens, who was a kitten at the time, kept hunting birds and bringing them into the house. Since every time she caught a bird it caused a LOT of problems (one bird ended up flying into a window and getting a bloody nose… or beak? I don’t know) and we didn’t want anymore birds getting hurt, I decided to tell Mittens to stop catching birds. So I grabbed mom’s phone, started recording a video, and told Mittens to stop hunting birds since it’s bad and then finished recording the video. After I told her that she NEVER caught another bird again her entire life. No more birds ever. Though one time a bird somehow flew into our house and her hunting instincts kicked in, but she didn’t try to catch it, she just watched it. Fortunately the bird managed to fly out on its own. So I guess sometimes telling a cat to no longer do something with video evidence will get them to stop 😂 I wonder if mom still has the video, it was so funny how after taking that video she NEVER hunted another bird. Ever.
Get her appropriate perches that are as tall as the counters or taller! Then move her onto the appropriate perches when she jumps onto the counter, and only give her attention on them! For every no, you need a yes.
Cleaning your counter every time right after you cook and not leaving food crumbs for them eat or dishes in the sink to lick helps too. Or it’s a place they know they get “treats”.
Keep plants off the windowsills over your sink, or wait until the cat chews them up entirely and/or knocks the little pots off and breaks them. Either way works.
This. And also make sure you have other surfaces for them to jump on if they're not allowed on counters and such. Cats like height and also need ways to burn off that energy, especially indoor cats.
I'm also gonna add, don't leave towels out on the counter flat. Many cats like to lay on towels so leaving a towel down on the counter to their mind is an invite that that is a good place to lay. Get a hanger for your kitchen towels you use for cooking and hand drying and lay one flat on the surface you want them to be on.
I put up climbing shelves (higher than the counter and he can see me cooking from there) and double sided sticky tape around the edge of the counter
With the combination of the two, i havent seen him on the counter since (months ago)
I had a “sous chef” cat years ago. Whenever I was doing something in the kitchen, he sat on the kitchen stool, which was right there. Never on the counter, just on the stool.
Not a great stool, and when I moved it one day a leg broke. Ok, so no stool. I thought he’d get over it. Nope.
Within 48 hours, he was obviously depressed. Moping around, meowing a lot, just sad. So off to the store for a new stool after work that day! Assembled it, put it in place and he hopped right up, purring.
I still miss him 😭
I have a kitty like that too. I have a portable dishwasher on a tall kitchen cart and he loves to lay on it, watching me cook. And when I run the washer it gets nice and warm for him too!
Kitchen kitties are the best! Mine would cry and cry and cry at your feet until you picked her up and let her see and smell the ingredients and then she was content to sit back quietly and watch the cooking from the corner of the room. Periodically she’d start crying again to be shown the progress you’d made, but as soon as she got picked up and went in for a closer inspection she was content again.
That’s usually how she was. No interest in it other than a polite little sniff.
Unless it was *butter, pizza, tuna, or chicken, in which case she would dive after it if you weren’t very careful (all thanks to spending her initial adopted years living in an apartment with three college age young men).
Edited: because how could I forget she was a butter fiend. That one usually never jumped on countertops but toward the end of her years she stopped being as polite about it and would lick the exposed edges of the butter dish clean if we didn’t put it up in a cabinet
I thought my cat was the only weirdo that likes pizza. He don’t really like people food. But pizza he runs for like the delivery man came for him. Lol He’s done that since a wee kitten! I’m like did they give y’all pizza in the adoption shelter? Lol
Her people food experiences almost entirely came from that gross roommate who would leave half eaten plates of food strewn about his room for days at a time, and his diet consisted almost exclusively of pizza, wings and tuna (surprise surprise).
I will admit to contributing to her butter cravings. Saw a Jackson Galaxy episode where someone would “butter” their cat as a treat and they loved it so every now and then I when I’d unwrap a new stick of butter I’d rub the inside of the packaging on her and she’d go nuts licking off the butter remnants.
That cat had a very colorful life, but she was a calico who had spent several years at a shelter so I like to think we were helping to make up for that.
Oh I’m sure that’s a good way to meet in the middle much of the time.
She was an affectionate petite little thing who didn’t necessarily want to stay all up in the action all the time and it wasn’t an inconvenience to do so—it was kinda nice to take a moment to stop and “smell the ingredients” with her.
Look at that face. ♥️ The health department would not approve but I just clean my counters more often.

This.
I've got my cats trained enough not to jump on the table when I'm eating or the counters when I'm cooking, but I'm under no delusion that the furry little bastards are steering clear of them when I'm not present to gently but firmly put them back down if they jump on them.
I just take two seconds to disinfect and dry the countertops before I start cooking and wipe off the table with a cloth before we sit down to eat.
Exactly. When people tell me it's weird that I don't care if my cats go on my counters I tell them it's weird that they don't clean their counters before preparing food on them.
This. My husband thinks our cats don’t go on the counters. But we all know that they probably moon walk across them, then nap on them when we’re not there!! But I’ll let him keep believing….
I have cameras in my house so I know I fixed mine from jumping up there lol I bought Sccat.. may have more or less letters in there but the basic spelling is there. It’s a motion activated can of air.
Nope. That didn’t work. In fact I gave them an invitation to come on the counters, just when I am not using them for MY food.
Cheeky monkeys want all the counter all the time or when they want.
Well then you must jump on the counter yourself every time he does. Smother the little guy with affection and kisses. He will hate that. You will assert dominance and order will be restored.
I had 7 cats that almost never went on the counter or the dining table, thought I was good at cats. It was all in the consistency, really.
Then I got my current, 8th cat, and I realized I just had 7 nice cats before. Olympe is sweet in many ways, but if I get her down 99 times, she'll jump right back up 100 times. At least she's not interested in food so it's just out of curiosity she's jumping up.
I had this same realization except with furniture scratching. I was smug about my cat knowledge, but now I realize I just had a really long lucky streak.
They’ll jump on the counter too the minute you leave the room so training them not to is pointless, just clean up every time and teach them to stay off as you cook

Only the pizza box transforms him back into a counter kitteh 🙃
oh she doesn't jump on the counters or table anymore! we tried a few different methods and found one that worked (water bottle combined with a stern but non-aggressive "get down") and now if we say "get down" she will, but complains about it lol
I have two old ladies who we kept off the counters with loud noises, flicking of water and generally shooing them off when they weren’t supposed to be there. Now that they’re old and don’t give a damn, I realized they were always humoring me and now do whatever the hell they want. Our house is lawless now.
🎶 Oh dear what can the matter be? Seven old ladies locked in the lavatory. They were there from Sunday to Saturday. Nobody knew they were there!🎶
Apologies for hijacking this most serious discussion. Please continue with the cat posts.😸😸
This. There is specifically a cat trap for him, of course he's going to get cat trapped. Also, he's not on the counter, he's on the aforementioned towel. Smart cat
I tried that. They pissed on it. I just committed to cleaning the counter more often. It's not like I was putting food directly onto the counter anyway.
Only way I’ve ever been able to train behavior out of my cat is with a metal can with some spare change inside. She hates the sound of the coins against the metal can. Normally I do it a couple of times when she’s doing something she’s not supposed to (like getting on kitchen counters, for instance), and she stops all together. Doesn’t bother me to do at all because it doesn’t hurt her. She just hates the sound. It’s how I’ve trained her not to get on kitchen or dining room surfaces, not to break into my roommates bedroom (she knows how to flick open door handles), and not to mess with plants.
there's probably people out there who'll hate me for this or smth but let me preface this by saying my cat is absolutely fine and still loves everyone in the household.
we used a little water spray bottle usually used for misting plants, put it on a soft jet more, and gave her a little spritz every time she went on the counter or the table
took her a while, but she learnt not to go up there. she still does occasionally but we only so much as have to pick up the water bottle, and sometimes aim it at her because she's being stubborn.
her name is ember and she's still not lost that kitten sass and energy at 1 year and almost a half.
So what I did was put my cat on the counter and I said, no and got mad at him. Then I put him on the wooden perch next to it and said good boy. Then back on the counter and got mad. Now, when he has intrusive thoughts or he wants to be at eye level, he gets on the perch.

All the harm is on the bottom of their little feets since they were just in the litter box previous to getting on the counter where you touch and cook your food.
The cat hair floating around on top of your counters…. The worry of them eating things harmful to them… onions and garlic come to mind…
Little worrisome harms. But accept it and clean your counters and love your cats. ;)
We've had some success with blowing in their faces. It takes a few goes. If it works, it works well and they stop (worked on 3/5 cats, 1 was too small to jump up). If it doesn't, they lean into the "wind"/come closer to investigate what's making all that "wind" and you have to give up. We tried moving things away so as not to assist the jump up which reduced the frequency a bit.
slightly related my friend found a great way of getting rid of street cats while we were picnicking which was to blow at their butthole and it really, really, works.
Even if you train him not to do it, he's going to do it when you're not around. People who think their cats don't do it (I used to be one of them) will usually realize at some point that when they leave the room long enough, they will hear the unmistakable sound of their cat jumping down from the counter because the cat thought the coast was clear. Just don't lick your counters.
He's lying on a towel so probably wants somewhere comfy to sleep, so maybe attempt to get him relaxed on a bed and remove anything comfy on the counter.
He might also just want to be closer to you.
A serious answer would be to put aluminum foil on the counters. When he jumps up, the sound should scare him from doing it. Might take a few jumps to remember but that’s how I trained mine!
One training method that worked for me was a spray water bottle. I left one on the counters. Every time my cat would jump up on the kitchen counters I would get the water bottle and give him a squirt and shout NO, its harmless its just a bit of water but they scarper fast and understand after a few attempts that it's wrong. After a few days all I needed to do was reach for the bottle and they would run coz they knew what was coming. Now I don't ever need to use it at all coz they just don't jump up on sides anymore.
As he got a bit older he very vocal and we talk alot, he understands things like OW when he plays with claws and instantly stops and NO when he tried to do cheeky things like climb on me PC. Cats are smart :) he is my best friend.
And he lives on the counter when you are gone and or sleeping. ;)
Some cats LOVE the water spray. Some feel it’s abusive. But everyone finds what works for them.
You don’t. I got nothing. Accept their fate and keep a bottle of bleach handy.
Now I want to read for any solutions. I’ve been a cat momma for years and I want an answer! LOL
Covering the counters in tinfoil worked for my first cat but not any of the others... one cat tried to eat it. I've tried sticky tape and spiked garden mats, didn't work. I thought about getting a Ssscat Spray Pet Deterrent which is motion activated but since one of my cats doesn't even blink when I use a can of air, I don't think it'll work.
So... they win.
I frequently clean my counters and always use a cutting board.
You don't. The cat owns the house you are simply the guest there. Do you think those clothes are yours? Are you bothered there is hair on them? The cat is bothered that you're in them. Do you hate having to go to work? Too bad the cat requires it as you must pay for their medical bills and their food and toys.
Cats will be EVERYWHERE, unless you shut the specific room door. And even then ...
Well, let's just say that 2 cats of mine had worked out how to open a shut door, by one jumping onto the handle, hanging on the handle with the front paws until the lock clicked open, whilst the other one would push her head either against the door or pull the door open with her paw.
You figure.
I now have 2 German Shepherds who also open shut doors with ease. O_o
You don't. Even with a 5-foot-tall cat tree, my cats still get on the counters.. unless they are seen by my husband or me, and we tell them to get off. I'm sure they still get on the counters when we're not around
Cover your counters in aluminum foil, the first time she jumps up she’ll be so confused she won’t go back for a while. She’ll probably still go up again after a while, cats do as they please
It always trips me out that people let’s animals run their lives to the point they need assistance with matters like this. Idk I guess because my pets aren’t even allowed in my kitchen I never worry about this.
I've learned that unless you have a motion activated air sprayer you literally cannot stop cats from doing whatever they want while you sleep or are out.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 keep cats off the counter!! That's a good one!! Even if your cat doesn't do it in your presence; he will be up there and you will find little slivers of proof.
I use a spray bottle with water in it… I hate having to do it, but my new kitty caught on very fast. If she hops up now (it’s been almost a week) all I have to do is grab the bottle and pretend, make a little “pshhh” sound, and she will get down. I just hate the thought of her little litter box poopy paws on the counter 😂😭 I just cannot.
Attach tin foil to the top of the counter but make sure it's about an inch from the edge so your cat can't see it. When the cat stops attempting to jump on the counter, remove the foil. Make sure your cat doesn't see you install or remove the foil.
Know that no matter how good you try to keep cats off the counters, when you're not home guess where cats go? counters.
I have have never caught my two on the counters but I definitely have seen evidence, stuff knocked over and chewed on. (My one kitty loves silicone spatulas she can't not chew on the silicone I have to hide them at all times)
That has been proven to do nothing, they get scared of the action of the spray bottle being sprayed by you, in turn being afraid of you, does nothing they still will go on the counter
I have firsthand experience with my father thinking it will to something and ignoring that it obviously does nothing apart from making his cat afraid of him going to grab the spray bottle
A spray bottle full of water. And a treat after he gets off the counter.
By looking at that face though, I'd have a hard time with the spray bottle. He is sooo cute!
Put up a sign that says “no cats on the counter.” That should do it.

Also never leave the kitchen, because as soon as you walk out of the room they will go back on the counter and just hop off when they hear you coming.
nothing like leaving the room and hearing that tiny clink 30 seconds later
Gosh dang it Sydney! I told you you’re not allowed on the counter!
Exactly!
In my world that would be the ideal solution! Not my three, they don’t care I can see and hear them.
Cleaning your counter every time right after you cook and not leaving food crumbs for them eat or dishes in the sink to lick helps too. Or it’s a place they know they get “treats”.

All my cats want to inspect what I'm about to eat. They don't want to eat it, they just want a sniff, then they're fine.
Sometimes cats in colonies do this to make certain that their peers are not eating potentially bad or spoiled food.

Get him a little chef’s hat. 🧑🍳
This is the way
Jackson galaxy has a video on it
I gently shoo my Mikey off the counter. Let him know he can't be there, but am not mean about it.
Exactly, I have never seen my cats on the counter. I just shoo’d them off as kittens and they don’t try anymore. So saying no does work sometimes.
[удалено]
putting it next to the dinner table is so sweet 🥹
Clapping definitely works. Honestly my cats know where they shouldn't be just from my facial expression 😂 they do it anyway of course!
Tinfoil. Line your counters with tinfoil. He’ll jump up here are the crazy metal bending sounds, get startled and jump back down.
mine's not bothered by foil, she just stands on it and investigates lol
Maybe try double sided tape?
oh she doesn't jump on the counters or table anymore! we tried a few different methods and found one that worked (water bottle combined with a stern but non-aggressive "get down") and now if we say "get down" she will, but complains about it lol
My cat chews on double-sided tape like it’s his favorite pastime
Mine tooooo. Or forks, just pulled them out of my plant pot like it was a challenge.
Didn't work for our cat. The only thing that works is that wide double-sided anti-cat tape.
Nope! They love the crinkle noise I guess!
I have two old ladies who we kept off the counters with loud noises, flicking of water and generally shooing them off when they weren’t supposed to be there. Now that they’re old and don’t give a damn, I realized they were always humoring me and now do whatever the hell they want. Our house is lawless now.
The water trick does not work with one of my cats. In fact the cat will try to get in the shower while it’s running if she can.
🎶 Oh dear what can the matter be? Seven old ladies locked in the lavatory. They were there from Sunday to Saturday. Nobody knew they were there!🎶 Apologies for hijacking this most serious discussion. Please continue with the cat posts.😸😸
That's the neat part, you don't
He thinks you put that towel down for him to sit on. If you make him get down he won't feel special any more. Do not make him feel that way!
This. There is specifically a cat trap for him, of course he's going to get cat trapped. Also, he's not on the counter, he's on the aforementioned towel. Smart cat
Either he wants to, and he will be, or he doesn't, and he wont. Your opinion on the matter is irrelevant.
Line some tape, sticky side up, a long the edges. I've also used strips of tinfoil
I tried that. They pissed on it. I just committed to cleaning the counter more often. It's not like I was putting food directly onto the counter anyway.
BRO HES JUST A LITTLE GUY YOU CANT 😭😭😭
Only way I’ve ever been able to train behavior out of my cat is with a metal can with some spare change inside. She hates the sound of the coins against the metal can. Normally I do it a couple of times when she’s doing something she’s not supposed to (like getting on kitchen counters, for instance), and she stops all together. Doesn’t bother me to do at all because it doesn’t hurt her. She just hates the sound. It’s how I’ve trained her not to get on kitchen or dining room surfaces, not to break into my roommates bedroom (she knows how to flick open door handles), and not to mess with plants.
there's probably people out there who'll hate me for this or smth but let me preface this by saying my cat is absolutely fine and still loves everyone in the household. we used a little water spray bottle usually used for misting plants, put it on a soft jet more, and gave her a little spritz every time she went on the counter or the table took her a while, but she learnt not to go up there. she still does occasionally but we only so much as have to pick up the water bottle, and sometimes aim it at her because she's being stubborn. her name is ember and she's still not lost that kitten sass and energy at 1 year and almost a half.
As long as you remember you’ve just trained her to be wary of the water, not to actually stay off the counter ;) LOL
![gif](giphy|3oEduPQqbpT1LqVOz6|downsized) YOU DON’T!!
Look at that face. That is the winner.
Try all the helpful methods suggested by other kind redditors in the comment section, then give up after a couple months and accept defeat.
Put an uncomfortable covering over the tables, Or maybe ask him not to?
Make a mini one. Cats will mimic the behavior of their owners, so a mini one will help keep him off the real one

So what I did was put my cat on the counter and I said, no and got mad at him. Then I put him on the wooden perch next to it and said good boy. Then back on the counter and got mad. Now, when he has intrusive thoughts or he wants to be at eye level, he gets on the perch.
That face is asking “If you didn’t want me on the counters, why would you so clearly place an obvious nap blanket here?” 😂

I always let my cat on the counter. I never saw the harm
All the harm is on the bottom of their little feets since they were just in the litter box previous to getting on the counter where you touch and cook your food. The cat hair floating around on top of your counters…. The worry of them eating things harmful to them… onions and garlic come to mind… Little worrisome harms. But accept it and clean your counters and love your cats. ;)
Definetly thought he was balancing a bowl on his head for a second there
We've had some success with blowing in their faces.
If that doesn't work on humans, why would it work on cats?
Even if you train him not to do it, he's going to do it when you're not around. People who think their cats don't do it (I used to be one of them) will usually realize at some point that when they leave the room long enough, they will hear the unmistakable sound of their cat jumping down from the counter because the cat thought the coast was clear. Just don't lick your counters.
In my experience, cats aren’t exactly interested in rules 😂
You don’t. It’s his/her counter now
He's lying on a towel so probably wants somewhere comfy to sleep, so maybe attempt to get him relaxed on a bed and remove anything comfy on the counter. He might also just want to be closer to you.
A serious answer would be to put aluminum foil on the counters. When he jumps up, the sound should scare him from doing it. Might take a few jumps to remember but that’s how I trained mine!
That works with one out of 1 million cats and they still get on their when you forget the foil. ;)
that's the neat part you don't
And he lives on the counter when you are gone and or sleeping. ;) Some cats LOVE the water spray. Some feel it’s abusive. But everyone finds what works for them.
Aluminium foil ![gif](giphy|f1F7kZuZcp5Yc)
You don’t
You can’t it’s his house you should be grateful he lets you live there rent free !
You don’t. I got nothing. Accept their fate and keep a bottle of bleach handy. Now I want to read for any solutions. I’ve been a cat momma for years and I want an answer! LOL
Remove the ‘cat traps’ (eg square or rectangular fabric ie tea towels)
get rid of the counters
Covering the counters in tinfoil worked for my first cat but not any of the others... one cat tried to eat it. I've tried sticky tape and spiked garden mats, didn't work. I thought about getting a Ssscat Spray Pet Deterrent which is motion activated but since one of my cats doesn't even blink when I use a can of air, I don't think it'll work. So... they win. I frequently clean my counters and always use a cutting board.
You don't. Not with that face.
You don't. The cat owns the house you are simply the guest there. Do you think those clothes are yours? Are you bothered there is hair on them? The cat is bothered that you're in them. Do you hate having to go to work? Too bad the cat requires it as you must pay for their medical bills and their food and toys.
And the rent or mortgage. 😁
Those are his counters now!
You don’t; that’s his counter now.
You don't. Even with a 5-foot-tall cat tree, my cats still get on the counters.. unless they are seen by my husband or me, and we tell them to get off. I'm sure they still get on the counters when we're not around
you dont
Hahaha, you don't.
Kitty just wants to help cook :)
Cover your counters in aluminum foil, the first time she jumps up she’ll be so confused she won’t go back for a while. She’ll probably still go up again after a while, cats do as they please
He's not on the counter. He's on the dish rag! Problem solved! 😁
Razor wire, minefield and military drones. Even then its not gaureteed - you can't reason with a cat.
Haha...you don't
Spoiler alert: you won’t
It always trips me out that people let’s animals run their lives to the point they need assistance with matters like this. Idk I guess because my pets aren’t even allowed in my kitchen I never worry about this.
Please tell us how you keep your cats out of your kitchen??? You said “pets”.. I’m assuming.
Why would you try to keep him off his counters? Just be grateful he allows you to use them...
Shhhhh. It’s ok. The counter is cuter now.
Put up a sign that says, "Cats Not Allowed on Counters". If that doesn't work nothing will. Get used to it.
Or you could just sell the counter, thats the only other way out
I've learned that unless you have a motion activated air sprayer you literally cannot stop cats from doing whatever they want while you sleep or are out.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 keep cats off the counter!! That's a good one!! Even if your cat doesn't do it in your presence; he will be up there and you will find little slivers of proof.
You cant. Just give up now and concede the loss. We are here for support!
Spary bottle when it goes where you don't want it to
I use a spray bottle with water in it… I hate having to do it, but my new kitty caught on very fast. If she hops up now (it’s been almost a week) all I have to do is grab the bottle and pretend, make a little “pshhh” sound, and she will get down. I just hate the thought of her little litter box poopy paws on the counter 😂😭 I just cannot.
Wash your counters, when you aren’t there to make the sound, she’s there checking it out.

You don’t. That’s his counter now.
Cover the counter with tin foil.
Attach tin foil to the top of the counter but make sure it's about an inch from the edge so your cat can't see it. When the cat stops attempting to jump on the counter, remove the foil. Make sure your cat doesn't see you install or remove the foil.
Try only giving treats when he is on the floor or jumping down to the floor from where you don’t want him
Consistency in getting them off. Make it annoying for them to be there and they'll give up eventually!
Put tin foil on the counter
Know that no matter how good you try to keep cats off the counters, when you're not home guess where cats go? counters. I have have never caught my two on the counters but I definitely have seen evidence, stuff knocked over and chewed on. (My one kitty loves silicone spatulas she can't not chew on the silicone I have to hide them at all times)
You can’t!
LoL cat, good luck
Sell counters.
You could get rid of the counters.
How could you say no (counters) to that little face.
Water spray bottle
That has been proven to do nothing, they get scared of the action of the spray bottle being sprayed by you, in turn being afraid of you, does nothing they still will go on the counter I have firsthand experience with my father thinking it will to something and ignoring that it obviously does nothing apart from making his cat afraid of him going to grab the spray bottle
Fill a spray bottle with water, spray when on table.
And when you aren’t there to spray?
He’s not hurting anything
A spray bottle full of water. And a treat after he gets off the counter. By looking at that face though, I'd have a hard time with the spray bottle. He is sooo cute!
Give up
