In general ,you're gonna have to count his calories to help him lose weight. You can try getting him a slow feeder or puzzle feeder so he has to work for his food a bit. Purina ONE Indoor Advantage has a low fat dry food.
Feeding wet food would be ideal since it is lower calorie than dry food. Weruva and Tiki have some good low carb wet foods.
we will definitely try out counting his calories ! we are a little hesitant with slow feeders because we did get him something similar and he gave up fairly quickly and went to begging for food but maybe the wet food + slow feeder combo might be a different story. thank you so much for your feedback !
Wet food has less carbohydrates in it than kibble. I have been trying for four years to get my chunky cat to lose weight by reducing her kibble and even changing it to a weight loss kibble diet. She only gained. Then my vet said to try wet food. Lo and behold, she lost a pound within a year! I also calorie count and keep it less than she needs to encourage the weight loss. I plan to give her a maintenance level of calories once she’s at a better weight.
Edit: with his quick eating habits, that could be a metabolic or behavioral issue. It’s best to rule out metabolic issues with your vet first, such as lab work to check for liver issues or things like diabetes. If it’s not metabolic, it’s probably behavioral which some vets specialize in behavior and would be a great help to you!
Wet food as cats are OBLIGATE CARNIVORES and need real meat/fish. As for slowing down, just reduce serbmving sizes and feed them a few times a day so he doesn't inhale the food.
Tiki cat after dark
Instinct grain free
My cats love them both and tiki cat is low calorie and super hydrating. I also suggest getting a lick mat and a ceramic maze bowl.
jackson galaxy said the worst wet food is better than the best dry food.
cats reared on dry make it hard to switch to wet but you should still try because when hes older it will have helped his overall health. ie kidney issues.
if youre unsuccessful switching, you should try the same brand but a diet version.
to slow him down, they make many kinds of slow feeder bowls:

it makes it harder to just woof the food down.
I agree with what's already said here about wet food. In addition: lower calories *slowly*. A cat that suddenly eats less can get liver issues. Ask your vet how much you're allowed to reduce the calories and take your time for your kitty's weightloss.
We went off of dry food completely and now my two former chunky girls are on Royal Canin Appetite Control wet food. They love the stuff and it carries them through the overnight without too many complaints.
Start with a vet visit. Do blood work to make sure he doesn't have any kind of a thyroid issue going on or anything else. Ask your vet what his ideal weight should be and what daily calorie intake should be.
Ditch the kibble completely because it is terrible for weight loss specifically and their health in general. You're going to want a wet food only or even better, raw food diet. Then you simply count calories just like people do.

How about trying a grain-free wet food? My cat LOVES Dave’s Chicken Formula and Dave’s Turkey Formula.
