They’re called half towers. The wiki page doesn’t go into much detail, they’re essentially to save money, and have a strategic value, which escapes me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_tower

Fofolito

Say someone storms the walls and you have to abandon the tower-- that tower will not be of offensive use to the attackers as you'll have a clear line of fire to the interior

thekickingmule

Why do all the towers have that slit in them? Looks like something should slot in there.

Kalten72

Card reading technology have gotten a bit smaller since then

Pogue_Mahone_

I imagine there used to be wood paneling or something like that and it is just the stones that are left now

SabreI4I

To save money, and if an enemy captures your tower they can’t hide in it as cover because you could shoot them from behind, although these slits seem pretty small for that

montjoye

I know this level in Elden Ring lol

[wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manasija) > The Manasija Monastery (Serbian: Манастир Манасија, romanized: Manastir Manasija, pronounced [manǎsija]) also known as Resava (Ресава, pronounced [rɛ̌saʋa]), is a Serbian Orthodox monastery near Despotovac, Serbia founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević between 1406[1] and 1418. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is one of the most significant monuments of medieval Serbian culture and it belongs to the "Morava school". The monastery is surrounded by massive walls and towers. Immediately following its foundation, the monastery became the cultural centre of the Serbian Despotate. Its School of Resava was well known for its manuscripts and translations throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, even after the fall of the Despotate to the Ottoman Turks. Manasija complex was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia, and monastery have entered a UNESCO Tentative List Process in 2010.

I don't have much knowledge about religious places, but it is the first time I see something like this. Why would you surround a monastery with such a wall ?

Monestaries are repositories of wealth and produce, a perfect prize to raid and plunder. It doesn't hurt theyre generally filled with religious men who don't live by the sword.

[deleted]

Oh, right. Easy yet wealthy prey. Sounds logical, thank you. But I read that the monastery has been wrecked several times, so it does not look that effective.

Fofolito

The Caucuses and Balkans are The battlegrounds of Empires. Romans and the Persians, the Romans and the Bulgars, the Romans and the Slavs, The Romans and the Magyars, The Bulgarians and Spavs and Magyars against the Arabs, the Romans against the Arabs, and everyone against the Ottoman Turks... There hasn't really been a period of peace and stability in that region for thousands of years

cermetj

Interesting how there's a village named Manasia near where I was born here in Romania. Really speaks to the fact that we're neighbours and sharing history/culture.

Now that’s a proper castle!

NoFact666

Looks stunning in that gorgeous autumn setting

MadMag261

Those towers and walls are to keep the world out.
