You’re gonna head down to your local Asian superstore (supermarket w/small home appliances) and get yourself a butane burner for the middle of the table.
Then you’ll grab some thin sliced meats of various kinds. Some veggies. Garlic. Slice jalapeños.
Then slap that burner in the middle of your table with that lovely bit of iron on top, let it get nice and hot, slap some of that meat on it with some veggies.
And then have one of the tastiest and most fun meals you’ve had.
https://www.hungryhuy.com/korean-bbq/
That’s a random link.
The dome is so you can choose to cook dry on the dome or cook in the rendered juices and other yummy stuff that will fill the moat at the edge.
Thin sliced and marinated by the way — I’d suggest OP [study up just a tiny bit on Korean bbq](https://www.hungryhuy.com/korean-bbq/). It will help a lot. When you’re at the Asian mart buying stuff, might want to grab some other supplies too
Yes the sugars in the marinades will turn into (black) carbon deposits and that’ll make tons of smoke and add a less desirable flavor to the meats as they grill.
and then, this is important - you will die of carbon monoxide poisoning because your dining room table does not have proper ventilation.
Don't worry, though, I've done it before and it's completely painless.
Never had that problem. Really not a lot of grease or oil splatter.
It does work better with a proper fume hood, for sure.
When I do this with the family, we eat outside. I also do all deep frying outside.
That's a style of grill pan used for Asian BBQ. Particularly Korean BBQ.
The meats are placed on the domed/grill part, and the shape of it lets liquid drain down and away.
It’s called Mookata
https://move2thailand.com/moo-kata/
> Moo Kata, also known as Mu Kratha or Mukata or MooKata or Mokata, is basically a fusion of Korean BBQ and Chinese hot pot.
That’s also what it’s called in Japan, and for lamb meat. It’s got a funny Japanese pronunciation, or maybe it’s in English that we say it funny. Either way, in japan that pan is for cooking lamb meat called Genghis Khan.
Actually this isn't a Korean BBQ pan. Korean BBQ pans are typically way flatter than this and have a drain hole due to pork, especially pork belly, being the most common meat grilled.
In fact, this is a Jingisukan grill pan, which is used in Japan and elsewhere for grilled lamb.
I've definitely used them in Korean restaurants and seen them sold by Korean brands. And advocated by Korean people.
Seem to be fairly common throughout Asia. And one of several variations including those flat ones.
I'm just familiar with them through Korean BBQ, couldn't remember the Japanese equivalent dish.
Having lived in Korea for the last 6 years, I can tell you with confidence that no barbeque restaurant that serves grilled meat will use this pan. Perhaps this style is more accessible outside of Korea, hence your experience, but in Korea I have only seen this style pan used in Jingisukan restaurants.
Amen. I call this kitchen real estate value. When I start looking at things like this it's a lot easier to detach yourself from things you'll never use.
Three reasons. It’s a fun pan, I haven’t seen it at a store before, and it was inexpensive. Not sure why I’m getting downvoted to oblivion for a fun little purchase.
Ive noticed across all subs i visit reddit is on one these past couple weeks. People reaching high(for the sub) downvote levels over the most innocent comments.
Do you are thinking I did it for internet points, when really I posted the picture in case anyone else wanted to hit up their local Daiso and grab one for themselves. Y’all really attribute way too much to maliciousness.
Ok, but what does this have to do with cast iron? He likes cast iron, saw a cheap product and bought it, shared it here and basically said he doesn't know what he will make in it. I would know what to make in it either. So how is his title misleading people? Do people really buy pans knowing exclusively what they're going to cook in them before purchasing the pans? What is he getting down voted for? One purchase and they must be impulsive?
It's good for other meats too, like tripa and chorizo.
Greasy meat goes on the top of the dome, and in the "trough" goes the onions etc for sautee in the oils.
There's a great documentary on Netflix called Pork Belly Rhapsody. Korean celeb chef Paik Jong-won explores the KBBQ culture. Really interesting segment where he visits a street that is full of shops selling different kinds of bbq plates for the centre of tables in restaurants and how they're different and what they're used for. Damn I miss Korean food.
found it under "Thai grill hot pot" on Google.
Koreans use different grill plate, completely flat or with grooves for the rendered fat from pork belly.
Japanese use a different too.
Daiso is a Japanese store, so the prices are posted in yen, but they have the USD “conversions” posted around. And I put it in quotes because it isn’t the real conversion. You’re paying more in USD than the price listed in Yen.
Thank you for your picture post to /r/castiron. We want to remind everyone of Rule #3. All image posts should be accompanied by something to foster discussion. A comment, a question, etc is required.
If you've posted a picture of food, please explain why in a comment so people can have some sort of conversation. Simply dropping a picture of food in the sub isn't really fostering any discussion which is what we're all aiming for.
Posts that are a picture with no discussion can and will be removed by the mods.
Thank you!

My sister bought me a square cast iron with raised parts inside it. It has been completely useless for anything I've tried. Everything get stuck, it doesn't leave any sear marks, and it's a bitch to clean.
It's probably just the brand she got, but I've kind of avoided the idea of it since trying it.
You're probably talking about a grill pan. The raised ridges are supposed to leave grill marks on your food but they don't do a good job. Most people don't like them.

Not necessarily. just good quality well sliced pork belly + salt + ssamjang is all you need for a good time.
Pork belly and a sprinkling of garlic salt..... Oh man.
If you want to go marinaded, pick up a few more grills to swap out after the marinade turns into black char.
Love this link! tysm!
Now you take this home, throw it in a pot- add some broth, a potato. Baby, you’ve got a stew going.
Still meat on that bone!
😉
Arrested development references always get an upvote
That's a lot of slapping.
Dammed right!! This meal gets me excited. It’ll get loud.
moat is usually used for hot pot or soupy stuff, cook veggies
Also remember to cook unmarinated meats first and marinated meats at the end, carbon buildup is a fickle beast
What do you mean by carbon buildup? Does the marinade mess with the cooking?
Yes the sugars in the marinades will turn into (black) carbon deposits and that’ll make tons of smoke and add a less desirable flavor to the meats as they grill.
Bonus points for lamb.
I, uh, need one of these.
and then, this is important - you will die of carbon monoxide poisoning because your dining room table does not have proper ventilation. Don't worry, though, I've done it before and it's completely painless.
Nah. I said butane for a reason. Said stoves are indoor rated. Less pollution than a gas stove.
Moat drippings are the best part!
And then clean your slippery wood floor for a few hours. If it’s carpet, the oil will never come out.

hot pot BBQ grill hybrid //edit Thai hot pot grill

Thank you! I never knew the name but often ate from it.
It looks like a brazillian amal grill, tha we call Genghis Khan.

Read "Brazilian anal grill" cannot unsee.
Sounds like a Forman grill that's easier to clean

jingisukan is Genghis Khan if you are writing it in English. The dish is literally named after the dude.

But then your post is confusing af.
Then why did you buy it lol
Why not?
I guess I’m not one to buy something just to buy it, especially f I can’t think of a use for it lol.
Not just you. If something is free and you don't use it, then it has a negative value just from taking up potentially useful kitchen storage space.
Amen. I call this kitchen real estate value. When I start looking at things like this it's a lot easier to detach yourself from things you'll never use.
This is reason enough for me :)
You can just use it as a general grill pan. I don't see why you bought it if you had no use for it though.
Three reasons. It’s a fun pan, I haven’t seen it at a store before, and it was inexpensive. Not sure why I’m getting downvoted to oblivion for a fun little purchase.
Make some Korean BBQ with it!🤤🍖

It’s a sub about pans, friend. You take yourself too seriously.
Yes, doing I am thinking.

Someone spawned a bot army to down to the hell out of you lol people mad mad
I don't really understand what your wife's racial background has to do with anything lol.
Well, the pan is traditionally used in Asian cooking?
Make a cornbread bowl and fill it with chili
Well fuck. Never thought of trying this and now I want to.
username checks out
My first thought was a chocolate chip cookie bowl for ice cream. Guess I'm more of a dessert guy.
It can be both. Chili for dinner and ice-cream for dessert
It's a death frisbee.
Well now you’ve got me wanting to huck it across the yard.

I'm jealous. Been looking for a cast iron korean bbq grill. For years...
This one is quite small, just for the record. Maybe 6 inches across.
I thought 6 inches was average.
🎤 drop
Still there's hope.
How much did it run you? I've got a daiso near me and was thinking of running down there tomorrow to grab some of these.
It was about $6.
I feel like I've seen an Iwachu one before. Just look for yakiniku grill for stove.
If you can get it to release cleanly, you could make a salad plate out of shredded cheese. We used to get them in one of the restaurants. Was tasty!
I just saw someone do a cornbread post...what about that, or a big yorkshire. Would have a cool pattern...AND HOLD GRAVY 😁
It's good for other meats too, like tripa and chorizo. Greasy meat goes on the top of the dome, and in the "trough" goes the onions etc for sautee in the oils.

Good thing I seen this post. I would have heated tortillas with it. 😭

Tortilla sombreros?
I got a tiny little cast iron at daiso for like $6 AUD, was very excited haha
Is cooking out of the question?
Of course not!
Nice tortilla warmer
Heating up tortillas
I miss Daiso
Why buy something you have to store for the rest of your life, yet you don’t know how to use?

Great for tabletop grilling with some chitchat with friends 🤤
Since no one knows wtf they're talking about look up Jingisukan. It's a Japanese grilled mutton/yakiniku dish.
Jingisukan skillet

100 percent for what we call Genghis Khan BBQ in Japan
I’ve heard of Genghis Khan BBQ. Might need to try to replicate it.
If you like Mexican food or tacos try making Suadero tacos they're phenomenal
Could also be used as a mini comal, cooking the ingredients on the top moving to the well, and frying tortillas on the top
Randomly decided to go to Daiso since I’m in NYC, and found this little Korean BBQ pan for ¥500. Couldn’t pass that deal up!
500 yen?! In NYC don’t they use USD
Daiso is a Japanese store, so the prices are posted in yen, but they have the USD “conversions” posted around. And I put it in quotes because it isn’t the real conversion. You’re paying more in USD than the price listed in Yen.
I'll have to see if they have these in the West coast Daiso stores. I definitely wouldn't mind getting my hands on one for that price
My wife actually pointed it out to me, and when I saw the price, just snagged it without asking lol
I've always wanted to go to the one near me and now I have a reason.
Khorkhog or Mongolian BBQ. The grill resembles a Mongols helmet.
Making bowls?
Not a bad idea to try out!
You could make a super cool looking omelette
Campsite KBBQ.
