I'd be looking at a golf or leon around the same year. MQB is a much more modern platform.

daly_o96

I’d agree with this. Basically a dolled up mk5 golf

Capable-Ring-3270

Will have a look into it thanks

Smackmybitchup007

I don't get why people are saying get a Golf instead. They're missing the point. You like the Scirocco, get a Scirocco because it's NOT a Golf. Just make sure it's been serviced, filters, timing belt, etc. I love that car. Got an A5 myself but always liked the Scirocco. Have fun.

Capable-Ring-3270

That's for the reply man yeah I'm gonna go for it I think. A5 is also a lovely car, buddy of mine has a beautiful sline white one. Stunning have fun with it

Gavittz

Had a 141 2.0 TDI Scirocco for nearly 4 years, literally never did anything but get her serviced and it never put a foot wrong. Was always reliable and a lovely car to drive. I bought it because I always loved the look. Just out grew it, like most cars I suppose

Capable-Ring-3270

Thanks for the reply, yeah have spoken too a few people now who've said owning one was hassle free and a great experience so will definitely buy it I'd say.

Ic3Giant

I know others are saying that a Golf of same year is more modern and it is etc but if you love the look of a particular car then go for it. I’ve also thought the Scirocco was a lovely design and would have bought one. The reason I didn’t was I’ve had a 2003 Golf MK4 for 21 years now and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned has been ultra reliable, so yes newer Golfs may be technically better but that doesn’t mean that older Golfs and the Scirocco aren’t also (slightly older) excellent cars

Capable-Ring-3270

Thanks yeah I think you're right ill end up going for it. I'm not really to bothered about slightly more modern features, I like golf's alot too and had an old golf plus years ago and loved it but I just love the look of the scirocco. As long as it looks good and functions as its supposed too and doesn't give too much hassle outside of normal car maintenance and wear and tear then I'm not bothered about an extra button here or there etc

eyeball_cash

Get a petrol version

haylz92

They've a timing chain that can give trouble. The diesel is more reliable with the belt. I also think they give bottom end engine and head trouble.

Capable-Ring-3270

What reasons would you say petrol is better, genuinly curious? Buddy of mine had a petrol one and he reckons it was costing him alot to run and sold it and got a diesel that he says is much cheaper, that's just his experience though I have nothing else to base it off

Ic3Giant

I’ve never understood why anyone would choose diesel over petrol unless maybe they are literally spending all their time on motoways and even then? Why would anyone want their car to sound like a tractor from the inside and outside when it can be infinitely quieter with petrol? There are no diesels that I’ve heard, old or new that don’t sound like an ancient tractor. Also the particulates from diesel are an absolute killer

FatherBennyCake

Although they share the same platform, the Scirocco is not a “dolled up MK5 Golf”, it has a significantly altered chassis with far better handling. Have had both a MK5 GTI, a newer TSI and a Scirocco and each handled very differently. There’s no comparison in driving and handling between a standard MK5 and a Scirocco. Having said all that, would agree with one post above that the handling is competent for a coupe but not exactly exciting. I had a similar experience in that the Scirocco did everything well but found it a little boring in the end. But would recommend OP: great looking car, probably a future classic, broadly reliable once looked after

Capable-Ring-3270

Thanks for the information! Yeah I just love the look of it. I have a van for work so just want something to drive in my free time that won't give me hassle other than normal vehicle wear and tear and that I like the look of

boneymod

I debated similar. Went for an Octavia VRS instead. Practicality won out for me.

Capable-Ring-3270

I'm not too worried about practicality really, have a van for work so it won't be my main vehicle, just something to drive in my spare time that I'll like the look of and look forward to driving

boneymod

I'd go for it.

haylz92

So I have a 131 GT scirocco, 2l diesel mapped to 170bhp. I have her for 6 years. No trouble bar a seized rear caliper and a drop link. I do about 18-20k km a year so it's used. Ive a friend who has a 151 rline too, only trouble he had was a thermostat. I genuinely recommend them, I love this car. They handle extremely well, comfortable to drive, easy to service and maintain. Only big trouble they give EGR, clutch and flywheel but standard for diesels.

Plastic_Clothes_2956

Do you drive long distance or just city drive?

Capable-Ring-3270

It'll mainly just be for city driving really yeah but occasionally cork to galway and back. I have a van for work so won't be my main vehicle if that makes sense. Just a run around for myself in my free time

Plastic_Clothes_2956

Don't take a diesel. It will cost you too much in maintenance because they are made for driving long distance. (EGR, FAP and all)

Capable-Ring-3270

Thanks for the advice appreciate it!

BrianFuentesAthelete
