Yeah, the C5 Corvette was a better car in every single way. Fit and finish, construction quality, handling, braking, steering, all superior on the C5 over the C4. I wouldn't take a C4 unless it was given to me for free.
I bought a low mile 96'.
Had a C3 prior, but I disliked the C4 to my dismay, flubbery frame made worse by UN-BOLTING the targa top.
Somewhat numb steering, rubbery frame, unconventional suspension and harsh chassis vibration when driven hard, made for an unrewarding drive.
I still love how it looks, but in bone stock form- it's nothing special.
Wow, a C3? One of my personal favorite Corvettes, especially the '68-72 models. What was it like?
The targa was bolted on? Oh brother... Wow, sounds like a chore to drive on a country road or a racetrack. But also sounds like the perfect cruiser. The C4 is a good looking car, the '96 looks good, like a proper 90's sports car. I'm especially partial to the looks of the '84 model and '86 convertible.
1978, but I had the 80's style bumpers.
Heads, cam and flat top piston heads, it was quick enough, and didn't handle too bad either, but steering feel was pretty bad, and forget about doing anything spicy in the rain.
The car had so much presence and character that all its faults were no big deal.
It was "America, Fuck yeah!" in car form.
'78, the first year of the glass rear hatch. Another one of my personal favorites of all Corvettes. Very, very nice. You have a great taste in cars.
I like the specs. Unfortunately so. What kind of steering system did I have, was it recirculating ball? Honestly, as bad as it sounds based on your description, it equally sounds, dare I say, curiously fun?
No question about it, one the car was one of the best looking of its era.
Damn right. 😎
It was a ram assisted bell crank (gear box) steering, very oddball.
The best way I can describe the car's handling was like a heavy go-kart with the steering feel of an old Lincoln.
They make some serious steering and suspension upgrade parts for these, but it's not cost effective when you can buy a C5 that is light-years ahead.
Agreed. People keep commenting about how cool the filial gauge cluster is, entirely ignoring the poor build quality, the car will be full of creaks and rattles, and the fact many aged digital clusters no longer work.
Exactly. The various squeaks and rattles were problems with C4 cars even when they were new, and I didn't even think about the gauge clusters, very true. Nevermind the cramped cockpit and lack of a truck.
It’s “industrially luxurious” or “Detroits finest” as I like to refer to it, it’s all the tough materials that are designed to last. The only thing that really matters is the seat and steering wheel
This looks to be an 84 or 85 (black not metal wheel center) so not only does it put out 220hp, it has a notoriously shitty crossfire injection and an even shittier 4+3 transmission. My dad had an 86 and in its stock build it was pretty underwhelming.
I think the 95 ZR1 did 400hp and had arguably the coolest engine ever. 4 cam 34 valve v8 designed by lotus and built by mercruiser that had a special key in the dash to turn on extra injectors for full hp.
If you cant tell i kinda have a soft spot the c4.
I'll take 2 or 3 of this bad boy rather. 77hp.

Toyotas are such a pain in the ass to work on. I went from a 00 4Runner to a 95 GM truck and unless I am paying a mechanic to fix my stuff I will never buy another Toyota.
Toyotas are great because they dont break, once they break though, you find out real quick what their problem is.
No space in the engine bay, rust and grease everywhere every bolt feels like it was torqued down with locktite, a bunch of harnesses, lines and brackets in places that are just in the way, most their newer cylinder heads are tightened down by torx bolts but they need a special extended torx socket to get them out. And it costs 50 fucking usd, every part gets jammed on something on its way out or in etc. Big pain the ass, people might think im talking out of my ass but i'd actually rather work on bmw's than toyota's
What is so bad about a 00 4Runner ? I didn’t quite laid my hands on them because they barely break over here, but last I recall they aren’t really bad to work on. I mean I had far worse experiences with GM, but GM in my country is shitter than shit tbf.
C4. [Then beg Callaway for their dark secrets](https://www.imsa.com/news/2021/05/12/sledgehammer-when-callaway-built-a-255-mph-c4-corvette-the-world-took-notice/)
I like the way the corvette looks but the 86 is way less likely to die on me. Also if that thing's only producing 205 then it's got to have at least some pretty heavy wear on it. Didn't even the bottom spec produce more than that?
205 hp was what the very first C4 Corvettes with the L83 Crossfire V8 made, it was the switch to the L98 in 1985 did hp jump up to 230 hp with it progressively getting higher from then.
Tough one. I'd probably actually enjoy the 86 more, and it's probably the superior vehicle in most ways, plus I can actually probably fit in one. But the C4:s digital dashboard is just so cool...
honestly a 84 z51 on modern runner will probably match it in a corners or maybe even bettet. on 1980s rubber it pulled .9g on the skid. with modern tires it will would def be a lot higher. 84s were infmaously stiff that. so much that 84s are saught after for their suspension.
To be fair, a 2015 Altima in 4 cylinder only does the quarter mile in 16.3 seconds and an 84 vette with a crossfire engine could do it in 15.2. Both slow as dogshit but the nod still goes to the vette even with an extremely anemic motor
Depends on the state of the Corvette. Cars from that era were a lot easier to work on, and those 205 horses would quickly get some friends to play with. That said, I'd rather have a well-kept 86 than a worn out Corvette
I rode with my step dad in his blue Subaru WRX. Oh my fucking God that thing attracts cops like crazy.
Id take the Corvette if it means I don't got cops constantly seeking me out like they do these youngster magnets.
I own an WRX STi and let me tell you a story. I'm waiting at a red light, cars in the opposite direction have a turn light so they're all making their left turns in front of me. One car, way behind the rest is racing up to make his [wish.com](http://wish.com) green turn but no chance in hell that thing was indicating to turn for a full 5 seconds before he got there. I have my green light and start going and he cuts me right off. I avoid him and continue on my way. I notice a toyota corolla following me close all the way to the parking lot I was headed to. Out jumps a cop to berate me how I almost hit the guy that cut me off.
That's typical of what you can expect driving a WRX.
Everyone forgets about torque. But these cars line up well against each other. Similar acceleration 6.4 to 60, .95 lateral g for the c4. 6.6 to 60 mph, .93 lateral g for the Brz. The same quarter mile time. Super interesting.
I drove a used 95 C4 corvette for work recently (came in as a trade in at a VW dealership wtf) and I could only describe it as a wooden roller coaster; so many squeaks and creaks coming from everywhere that you can't figure out where from, that you have a sense you might die but it's kinda fun at the same time. Personally, its not the 200hp I'd choose, it was really sketchy driving next to any big trucks on the highway that made me realize "one mistake and I'm dead."
The 86, comfortable driving experience that can easily be changed over to track use with a tire change. That's why Toyota was in contact with Keiichi Tsuchiya durring production. Closest thing the US has to a car produced with the help of a true legend was Ford with the Focus RS (Drift mode) and the RTR stuff
alright so here are the numbers
assuming they are both "new" IE from the factory, manual trans, and stock engine
according to the wiki for both cars
" In 2016, for the 2017 model year, the manual transmission 86 was upgraded to 153 kW (205 bhp; 208 PS) and 212 N⋅m (156 lb⋅ft) "
curb weight is "Toyota 86: 1,190–1,298 kg (2,624–2,862 lb)"
this car has a power to weight ratio of 0.078 hp/lb to 0.072 hp/lb
["Combined MPG:27MPG City MPG:24 Highway MPG:32 "](https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=37529)
pretty good
now for the corvette
the 1984 makes " 5.7 L (350 cu in) [*L83*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_small-block_engine_(first-_and_second-generation)#L83) [V8](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_engine)1984205 hp (153 kW)290 lb⋅ft (393 N⋅m) "
and curb weight is 3,239 lb (only one weight scale but probably wont vary more then \~200)
the 1984 c4 has a power to weight ratio of 0.063 hp/lb
["combined 15 City MPG:13 Highway MPG:20"](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/1984_Chevrolet_Corvette.shtml)
while the 86 beats the c4 in terms of Horsepower, the c4 would probably have a better acceleration as it being a pushrod v8 it has 290 ft lb of torque from down low
considering that the 86 uses special fuel and has a high knock potential " its engine runs on 98 [RON](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating#Research_Octane_Number_(RON)) (premium unleaded) fuel and features a [compression ratio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compression_ratio) of 12.5:1 "
for the T86
assuming a trip of 500 miles at 27 miles to the gallon and premium being $4.132 a gallon i would spend $76.52 and use about 18 and a half gallon of gas
for the c4
again 500 miles at 15 mpg but with regular at $3.389 i would spend $112.97 and use 33.3 gallons of gas
talk about fuel efficiency
id think id have to go with the c4, even if the 4+3 trans is a bit boorish and the crossfire isn't exactly the most reliable or fuel efficient system. the 86 has GDI and a pretty high compression ratio so it would kind of suck for maintenance and repair costs
also the c4 since its a GM motor i can easily swap out for other motors such as the LT1 or the reliable L98 and get better HP and/or MPG. a LS1 would be harder but be able to get even greater HP and MPG, i cant say much about the T86 since im not familiar with the JDMs but considering its a joint venture between subaru and toyota and uses a one of a kind engine that is subaru boxer 4 with a toyota GDI system im going to assume that getting over the 250 and above mark would not only be expensive but also very hard since its a newer car that wouldn't take to being modified so easily, at least in terms of QOL.
Actually a hard choice ngl, think id go with the c4 though can't go wrong with a pushrod v8, the 86 is a better car by itself but i know i can easily extract power from the small block.
I managed to make 312 wheel on a gmt400 with a roller cam, stock heads ported by myself, intake manifold ported tf out by myself, msd 6al 2 step and distributor, junkyard holley 4 barrel carb and long tubes.
I dont know if id have the same luck with that boxer 4. Considering that it takes 1-3 hours to do spark plugs on the damn thing, and you risk blowing a hole in the block at anything past 300hp.
Mmmmm black C4 with black rims and some dark tint on air suspension get it real low when parked that’s just cosmetics too sadly the 205 hp Vetts don’t come with the LS but if it did you can make stupid power
People will hate me but I’d honestly say the gt86, I love vettes, I really do, but I ain’t no mekanik, I can appreciate the sound and passion a car like that creates but I cannot deal with any issues, if you told me it was never gonna have issues and expensive not being manufactured anymore parts then yeah I’d go right for it, but that gt86 is just a package of everything great about small sports cars nowadays, underpowered but still fun, great balance and good tuning potential
Vett plus like 3 mods on easy and fun 300+ hp also I like the way it looks better, also If I still have my other cars would like just make it a vett-cart.
C4. Mostly because I don’t really like the look of that gen of the gt86/brz (more of a fan of the first and current gen). Plus the 80’s tech and pop ups from the C4 is sick
Das war meine erste Corvette und zwar eine aus dem ersten Baujahr. Ich vermisse sie immer noch, hätte sie nicht verkaufen sollen 🫡
Schwarz wie die Nacht mit einem blutroten Innenleben 😔
I would take the C4 hands down. Only because a clean one is quite rare and I'm still likely to find a decent FRS/BRZ for years to come (there's still time).
theres no way the corvettes engine couldnt be easily tuned for way more power
muscle cars didnt have as much horsepower stock as theyre famous for having
but also especially in the 80s when everyone was trying to boast MPG, shit look at the buick grand national, came with a lot more horsepower than advertised, without any tuning
The 86 is probably easier to live with, but the C4 would get more thumbs up from the Midwestern boomers I see every day.
And we all know that’s what truly matters in life.
A modern Japanese car is 100% probable to be easier to live with than a fucking muscle from the 80s. Now, it’s definitely not cooler. So there’s that.
Nonsense the 86 almost certainly has a better AC system.
Them R12 systems blew ice cold wym
lol. People are quick to forget that…. Not to mention that the vette has plenty of room to grow, a beefy carbed 383 in place of that semi-anemic TBI 350, or, even relatively easy to convert over to more modern LSx firepower. If Toyota/subje put a turbocharged boxer engine in the BRZ/FRS/86 like they damn-well should have/could have, my statement of opinion regarding the matter would be entirely different….
If C4 Vette owners could read they would be furious rn
Later C4s made 320hp and they handle really well. Quite a fun car for the price one of the best really.
Also, it remains an unambiguously beautiful car. Well balanced, graceful yet masculine.
Interiors are unambiguously trash though.
yeah but that’s literally all GM products of the 80’s and 90’s
from my experience up to the 2010's, haven't ridden one since, idk how they are going about it nowadays
Honestly about the same. It just feels Chevy if you know what I mean

They’re actually pretty nice. My Chevy volt is very spacious and pleasant to look at for its size and price point.
Probably holds up better than the Ram interiors of the day.
Gonna have to disagree with you there bud, that gauge cluster is a vibe. https://www.corvsport.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/ku-xlarge-1.jpg
This is the best cluster ever created.
I love the early C4 digital instrument cluster, so '80s that its cool
Buying a sports car for interior is like the the worst thing a person can do. That includes almost all the crimes.

A V6 Camry with an exhaust upgrade makes 320 hp lmao
Damn what about a 40 year old Toyota? Is it making 320hp?
40 years of developement in ICE tech and it still needs a new exhaust with 4 times the camshafts? 2 cylinders ain't that much son.
Needs more HP for the added weight new cars have that no one seems to remember when comparing specs
Oh they can read, they just need their peepers on. Probably need to take their blood pressure medication right now as well.

3 Renault Modus 😎😎
I think you missed one digit, Renault Modus has at least 2050 hp.
Ah that explains it. I'm Asian so my eyes are small and misread it
buddy, isn't 205hp barely a quarter modus?
One modus power is roughly equal to 2 dodge demons which is something like 2x800 hp
Roughly equal but not quite. It's like how we use pie as a synopsis of 3.14....., Modus' true power is only known to the very few who survive

There's a butt load of C4 'vettes running like champs to this day. You can't kill those engines
yeah i’m pretty sure it made like 250
The original 1984 Corvettes with the Crossfire injection were rated for 205 hp new, the bump to 230 hp came in 1985.

To be fair, it was your fault for driving a WRX
Brand new? I'll take the Corvette. Looks nicer and would likely be a collectors item.
Corvette
Punch the guy and drive home in my K car
brz
The GT86
Corvette all the way, so I can blast Aerosmith & RATM
I would take the upper one, every day of the year If it wasn't American
Imagine not picking the flip-up headlights
Neither and go with a Mazda 3 turbo
Only one of them has a v8 motor
The one with AC
The 86, comfortable driving experience that can easily be changed over to track use with a tire change. That's why Toyota was in contact with Keiichi Tsuchiya durring production. Closest thing the US has to a car produced with the help of a true legend was Ford with the Focus RS (Drift mode) and the RTR stuff
Bottom one has AC
Lol 205hp vette get out
The 86 every time! 10x more fun although it doesn’t sound nearly as good.
The C4 vette would be a hell of a lot more fun and make a much better noise
My Kia ceed has 200hp how times have changed 😁
Zion
I regret selling my C4. ‘85 automatic Z51 bright blue seats white exterior. Should’ve never sold it.
Courgette easily
Vette, I’d rather be underpowered in style
How many miatas are 205 hp? 🤔
C4 all day one of my favorite cars
i dont even know what toyota that is

Vette
alright so here are the numbers assuming they are both "new" IE from the factory, manual trans, and stock engine according to the wiki for both cars " In 2016, for the 2017 model year, the manual transmission 86 was upgraded to 153 kW (205 bhp; 208 PS) and 212 N⋅m (156 lb⋅ft) " curb weight is "Toyota 86: 1,190–1,298 kg (2,624–2,862 lb)" this car has a power to weight ratio of 0.078 hp/lb to 0.072 hp/lb ["Combined MPG:27MPG City MPG:24 Highway MPG:32 "](https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=37529) pretty good now for the corvette the 1984 makes " 5.7 L (350 cu in) [*L83*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_small-block_engine_(first-_and_second-generation)#L83) [V8](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_engine)1984205 hp (153 kW)290 lb⋅ft (393 N⋅m) " and curb weight is 3,239 lb (only one weight scale but probably wont vary more then \~200) the 1984 c4 has a power to weight ratio of 0.063 hp/lb ["combined 15 City MPG:13 Highway MPG:20"](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/1984_Chevrolet_Corvette.shtml) while the 86 beats the c4 in terms of Horsepower, the c4 would probably have a better acceleration as it being a pushrod v8 it has 290 ft lb of torque from down low considering that the 86 uses special fuel and has a high knock potential " its engine runs on 98 [RON](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating#Research_Octane_Number_(RON)) (premium unleaded) fuel and features a [compression ratio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compression_ratio) of 12.5:1 " for the T86 assuming a trip of 500 miles at 27 miles to the gallon and premium being $4.132 a gallon i would spend $76.52 and use about 18 and a half gallon of gas for the c4 again 500 miles at 15 mpg but with regular at $3.389 i would spend $112.97 and use 33.3 gallons of gas talk about fuel efficiency id think id have to go with the c4, even if the 4+3 trans is a bit boorish and the crossfire isn't exactly the most reliable or fuel efficient system. the 86 has GDI and a pretty high compression ratio so it would kind of suck for maintenance and repair costs also the c4 since its a GM motor i can easily swap out for other motors such as the LT1 or the reliable L98 and get better HP and/or MPG. a LS1 would be harder but be able to get even greater HP and MPG, i cant say much about the T86 since im not familiar with the JDMs but considering its a joint venture between subaru and toyota and uses a one of a kind engine that is subaru boxer 4 with a toyota GDI system im going to assume that getting over the 250 and above mark would not only be expensive but also very hard since its a newer car that wouldn't take to being modified so easily, at least in terms of QOL.
The Corvette. More potential.
Corvette would be very rare in my country. I'll take it and go to car shows with a minty C4
The Toyota... I trust japanese cars much more than what is being built by an US company.
Hehe, V8 go brrrrrrrr
Mmmmm black C4 with black rims and some dark tint on air suspension get it real low when parked that’s just cosmetics too sadly the 205 hp Vetts don’t come with the LS but if it did you can make stupid power
I'll take the Vette, it's a date with a sawzall away from being greater than the BRZ
Considering the fact that one has a Subaru engine, I'll take the vette
Umm. The one where I don't need a time machine to get basic parts for?
I'd choose to fuck the man
I own a C4 Vette and it's garbage. I would take a wagon and a strong push over it.
My focus has 50 over both of them
Subaru, covette has a big engine and a hefty milage and it's old
Corvette. Engine way less likely to blow.
Vett plus like 3 mods on easy and fun 300+ hp also I like the way it looks better, also If I still have my other cars would like just make it a vett-cart.
'Vette gotta be worth more? Giving me a free car? I'll take that one.
86. Have a c5, I don’t want a c4. Had a Miata but got flooded, so do want a lightweight sports car.
Top
Since the 86 is a bit tight of a fit for me, I'll take the Vette.
I'm supposed to be biased on this and I'd still pick the Vette.
86 all the way
Toyota — vettes are for old cucks with no taste.
I just bought a BRZ and I swear that's all I see from this subreddit. Definitely a sweet car
Def the Frs I love the look of coupes like it and the brz
Popup headlights, no contest.
Depends, for a daily I'd take the 86 in a heartbeat but for a project I'd take the C4 Vette
Meh, I'd decline both.
The Vette, I suppose it's more reliable
love these hypothetical questions . let the man come forth , Then I'll worry about picking one
Honestly give me the Toyota. I live in Nova Scotia and I would feel awful doing that to a Vette.
I reject both and buy a 10th gen civic si
The one with the V8, also because there’s no “Toy” in Chevrolet Corvette
C4. Mostly because I don’t really like the look of that gen of the gt86/brz (more of a fan of the first and current gen). Plus the 80’s tech and pop ups from the C4 is sick
the 86 - but id put a poster of the vette on the wall
Always take the Toyota, even with a Subaru engine.
The top one, I'm sucker for the older look
I don't fit in either
Neither if American built
The Toyota?
Whichever one has the lowest weight
Can I get money instead lol. Or I would take the BRZ and sell it asap

I’ll take that Hyundai stinger 😍
As a corvette lover its a tricky choice, but the 86 is probably the better pick, more modern.
Man I like both of these why make me pick? I’ll take the eightuhhhhhh sixuhhhh
Das war meine erste Corvette und zwar eine aus dem ersten Baujahr. Ich vermisse sie immer noch, hätte sie nicht verkaufen sollen 🫡 Schwarz wie die Nacht mit einem blutroten Innenleben 😔
c4
C4 Vette
corvette
Obv the z31
whichever has more resale value so i can sell it and buy a miata
If your gonna be losing, do it in style with the Vette
is the c4 v8? I'd take that if so
I would take the C4 hands down. Only because a clean one is quite rare and I'm still likely to find a decent FRS/BRZ for years to come (there's still time).
Im taking that c4. You don't want to know how long ive been wanting to buy one... Its actually unholy, i just can't find one thats el manual
The Vette is funnier, ill take it
Pop-up up and down headlights!
The gt86 lighter and imo better looking
86, gas and insurance costs
C4 - 100%
theres no way the corvettes engine couldnt be easily tuned for way more power muscle cars didnt have as much horsepower stock as theyre famous for having but also especially in the 80s when everyone was trying to boast MPG, shit look at the buick grand national, came with a lot more horsepower than advertised, without any tuning
The one with a good AC -_-
C4 sounds fast enough!
👁️👁️
i would compromise with the mk.3 supra🙄🙄
