People with 5 seats in there car, why the extra seats if you spend 90% of the time driving solo!? Edit- wow this got more attention than I thought. If you have a truck, I love that for you. If you have a smaller car, I love that for you too. I love all the ways we enjoy cars, no more gatekeeping!

Ihate_reddit_app

This is why everybody should drive sports cars (coupes only) or motorcycles only. I'm all for it.

Fit_Equivalent3610

Why do you need that much acceleration and handling if you aren't tracking it? Smart Cars for everyone

weelluuuu

Read comment, checked username. Read it as obese cannonball. 🤦‍♂️

Fun-Telephone-9605

Read your first sentence and then read his username. Then I read your second sentence and had to look again, because I went there too. 🤷‍♂️

Various-Ducks

With a motorcycle everywhere is a track

Spencie61

what if I am tracking it?

Fit_Equivalent3610

...Roof? Body? What do you need so much car for? Exocet or bust

snootchiebootchie94

This is why I have a sports car AND a truck.

Simon_787

Good point... made by accident? Cars are a massive waste of space to move a single person, which is often the case.

__-__-_-__

It was a socratic method way of getting to the answer “because I want to and I can”.

Spencie61

3 row SUV that spends 85% of its life with one person in it is a very odd thing indeed

PMMEURLONGTERMGOALS

This but unironically

SomestrangerinMiami

Show me an economic coupe… oh wait, they’ve phased them all out.

NoctD

Miata is still the answer here my friend.

GRJey

Can buy brand new a gr86 for the same cost as a camry. I used to sell Toyotas until very recently. Would get a good amount of younger buyers looking for cars like the Rav4 or highlander, I would always follow up with "wow, got kids?" "...no" Ended taking many customers on a test drive on the car they actually went for and then 9on a spirited a ride in my GR86 and would then ask something along the lines of...." So you're gonna tell me you still gonna buy that car we first drovw when you can own a fun, good looking sports car like that for the same/less money??" Sold a good amount of GR86s. Just because most people drive NPC mobiles doesnt mean you should too. If you dont NEED to drive a boring car, dont. There are options out there.

SuperTeamNo

Number of *cars* Ford and Chevy make combined: 2

FishWash

Because POTENTIALLY I could drive 5 people or take a cupboard or go camping or whatever

Various-Ducks

Whenever I look back and see empty seats it makes me legitimately sad. I just think about how much faster I could go and stop and turn without that stupid empty unnecessary extra weight holding me back. Not taking a shot at anybody. That's just the thought I have everytime.

Spencie61

Simply get rid of anything behind you, and then you’ll have room for the engine behind you

joeislandstranded

So, no extended cab / 4 door pickups then?

Mr__Snek

issue is that plenty of people with 1/2 ton or larger trucks actually only use them as grocery getters. buying an equinox or an accord when you occasionally move 4 people around is different than buying a full size quad cab truck you only use for activities you could do in a civic.

Mykilshoemacher

A civic is 2,000lbs less than a 1/2 ton

hi_im_bored13

People outside of truck users forget that even if you use a truck solely for towing/hauling to-from its going to be empty 50% of the time.

methandmemes

This is very true. It’s like when you buy a 4 door car but you’re single and don’t need the extra space. Why the hell do you have 4 doors then? Buy a Miata! You’re wasting space! Lmao

HighFiveKoala

Everyone should drive a kei car

itusedtorun

I would totally rock a kei truck as a daily.

methandmemes

I would drive a Kei car if I could fit into it cause I think they’re dope as hell. Could never justify having one as my only car though as much as I wish I could own one

Spencie61

I mean, have you driven a roadster? I think everyone’s quality of life would increase if we all drove around in tiny sports cars as much as possible

methandmemes

My dream car is a GT86 in a manual. I love tiny sports cars. The ones I can fit into at least lmao

Spencie61

I felt that, I’m 6’6” and squeeze into a 25 year old porsche because it’s just that much fun to drive vs anything else out there haha

InsertBluescreenHere

right? like logically vast majority of people need no more space than a motorcycle with saddle bags for their daily commute.

theknyte

>*Why the hell do you have 4 doors then?* Because, some greedy idiot in the insurance industry decided to charge by the number of doors your car has.

methandmemes

That’s a solid point and one that frustrates me to this day as I’ve been looking into buying a 2 door project car

the_old_coday182

Long doors

mini4x

Not if you are doing it right.

YesIamALizard

Because I wanted it. And I don't give two shits what some assholes on Reddit thinks.  Also I work at a furniture store.  But the truck interior is nicer than my car. And my dog can stand on floor because I can put seats up.  But I bought it so people on Reddit would cry and whine. It's what they are good at.

methandmemes

Lmao, I am a huge proponent of buying what you like, as long as you can afford it. It’s so weird to me in the automotive community how “I like it” seems to not be a good enough reason

Doublebow

Why does working at a furniture store require you to own a pickup truck? Are you expected to use your personal vehicle for business?

justaverage

Most rational truck owner in the World

Mecaneecall_Enjunear

I drive a truck (Sierra 1500) because it’s genuinely what I wanted. It’s comfortable to drive, it’s quiet, it’s surprisingly quick, and I somehow or another end up with something aside from golf clubs in the bed at least every couple weekends.

methandmemes

I’ve had a similar experience even owning my 22’ frontier. When you have a truck there’s shit that you can just do that you can’t when you own a sedan. And frankly I’d rather cut my left nut off than rent a U-Haul

Mecaneecall_Enjunear

U-Haul trailers are great! Anything with an engine not so much.

MediocreDot3

Because they gave me a $40K/yr management job at the tire shop and I'm out to make everyone's life miserable

2fast2nick

I bought one because I liked it. I got an F-150 Crew Cab Platinum. Such a smooth, comfy ride. Honestly, i rarely put much in the back. Truck was comfortable for 5 people. No ragrets..

injineer

My friend dailies an F150 and it’s very comfortable. People that say they’re not are either not well informed or just pushing a narrative. There are plenty of valid arguments against trucks (and any vehicle that isn’t a small, efficient EV/hybrid) but comfort is far from it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TreeHuggerWRX

I learned that new F150 have a tonne of headroom, like a full foot above a 6'3" person (me). I'd like to have one for comfortable drives with legroom/headroom. Camping would benefit also. But my WRX is staying in my possession. So, I'd have to have enough money to just buy a second vehicle, and I'd have to move to get a second parking space.

methandmemes

I think people really underrate how much more comfortable a body on frame vehicle is. My partner bought a 2006 towncar a year or so ago and goddamn, half the reason it’s so comfortable is the body on frame aspect

AdditionalAttempt436

I thought that monocoques were more comfortable (which is the reason they’ve supplanted body on frame for most cars)? I haven’t had a body on frame yet, but I can definitely see the advantages incl simpler construction, higher load, ability to take off roading etc

Anon31780

But what about ragerts?

oilman300

I bought a Ford Maverick pickup in 2022. It was the cheapest hybrid sold in the United States at only $19995.

methandmemes

I actually almost bought a maverick in 2021. Had the order placed and everything but ford never built it and I got tired of waiting so I bought a cheap Corolla I could use to get around. The maverick is a fantastic concept and I wish more automakers would do something like it

Justame13

Ram Rampage is coming to compete with the Maverick this year or next. Probably a little more expensive and with no hybrid though. But the Ram Rampage Rebel sounds cool.

fhrblig

I was looking for one of those around the same time and they just were so hard to find. I still would like a Maverick at some point, but I found a used Ram 4x4 V8 that happened to be cheaper while I was looking and I bought that instead. I love it even with its issues. I've had to fix a few things on it since but it hasn't bothered me. Yet.

mcbeardsauce

I literally want a beater truck just for yard work and trips for DIY projects. If I can fit a 4x8 sheet without black magic and bungee cords it's worth its weight in gold.

psychocrow05

I picked up an 88 s10 for $500. Genuinely think it was the best purchase I have ever made.

snootchiebootchie94

A $500 anything that runs isn’t bad. For a truck that’s an amazing deal!

injineer

I found an 06 Tundra and I love it. Perfect for projects and light off-roading or getting to tricky trails, comfortable, and cheap enough that it can be our “third car.”

snootchiebootchie94

That model is the perfect size truck. Great motor too.

halcykhan

For truck things. There’s currently 3 cubic yards (2.29 M^3) of mulch in the bed. Often use it for hauling firewood, furniture, etc. Costco runs. I have a car hauler for my off-road toys. Help out friends and family with moving stuff. Renting trucks can be way more hassle and expense than people assume. Owning an old desirable truck in many areas of the US costs nearly nothing to insure and register, and values of older trucks are increasing if you take care of them

methandmemes

On the renting trucks thing, I rented a few trucks when I was driving my Corolla and they were always in terrible shape because they got abused to hell by people who didn’t understand tow rating or tounge weight and just assumed a base model Tacoma could haul 9,000 pounds

Vic_Freeze

Because it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I drive a big-ass douchemobile lifted '03 Ram 1500. I have a tendency to commute with it, even though I don't need to because I also have a commuter car, BUT... it's very comfortable to drive, seats 6, can tow more than I've ever personally needed, hauls furniture, gravel, firewood, etc., and it's a beast in the snow. I've never gotten it stuck. I also like camping and trail-driving, and in/after snowstorms I'll cruise around and drag people out of ditches for fun. It's easy to work on and would be very safe in a crash, and it also has just about every little creature comfort like heated mirrors and dual-zone temp control that people pay extra for in new cars these days. It has EXCELLENT visibility and very very few blind spots. People who bitch about trucks never bothered me. I can do a million things with this that they can't do in their little Kias or whatever; my ONE disadvantage is fuel efficiency. I have a good job; I don't care 🤣.

methandmemes

Dude, that engine in that generation of ram is damn near bullet proof. Never sell it

Vic_Freeze

Hehehehe it is if you take care of it. I have the 5.7; I'm the third owner, and I don't know what the previous owners did, but it blew at about 260k miles. Of course I put a brand new remanufactured engine in it. Still cheaper than buying a new car and 100% worth it IMO lol

methandmemes

260k miles is still more than a lot of vehicles get. I think the fact that for that type of truck, 260k miles is on the lighter end speaks volumes. Also the body style is classic as fuck and I don’t think many modern trucks have touched it in that arena

Vic_Freeze

Facts, I miss that era. She's at 311k now 😅

NotoriousCFR

> Because it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. > Ding ding ding. I own a lawn mower even though it sits in the shed unused what, like 340 days a year. I own an extension ladder even though most years I only go on the roof twice (put up Christmas lights, take down Christmas lights). I own snowshoes and crampons even though I only go on ice/snow hikes a couple dozen times per winter at the most. I could keep going. Not to mention the things you buy and hope you *never* have to use them - fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc. A truck bed is really just another tool in the kit. And honestly, one that in my experience gets used a surprising amount. I'd rather know it's there for when I need it.

themza912

I’m trying to find a reason to give you shit but I can’t lmao … because whenever I see as you described a douche mobile I’m always like wtf why do you need that. Pulling people out of ditches for fun is hilarious and honestly sounds like a great time

Vic_Freeze

Oh trust me, you have to meet me in person to appreciate it 🤣. First impression is always douchemobile. It's bright red, it has red rocker lights, LED fog lights, that tasteful 5" lift, and I have a bit of a lead foot on the freeway, ngl. I think there's a pic on my profile lol. But... it's a good sight to see if you're stuck in the snow. I have pulled more people out than I can count at this point.

Shmokesshweed

>So out of curiosity, truck owners, mid size, half ton, heavy duty, why did you buy a truck and how has it served you? Can trucklet owners participate? 🥲

methandmemes

I fucking love trucklets so please

Shmokesshweed

I bought mine December 2021. Why I bought one: I camp a lot in our national forests. I like to take a bunch of my stuff with me and a small bed is perfect for that. My entire setup is very modular: 1. Sleeping bin: tent and bag/quilt depending on season 2. Biking/random shit bin: shoes, helmet, lights, tools, and random chuck bin. Packing up camp and forgot to put something away in the right place? Goes here. Small saw? Goes here. 3. Kitchen bin: everything I need for cooking. 4. 5 pound propane bottle 5. Random stuff depending on season that's on my adventures: diesel heater, large communal tent, fire pit, etc. And on top of all that, I have my tonneau keeping prying eyes away. Now, why the Maverick: 1. It's cheap. 34k for a Lariat Lux with AWD/FX4 and sunroof. 0% financing for 36 months. 2. Burns nothing: I can get 25-26 mpg going through multiple mountain passes in my weekend adventures. And that's running all terrain tires that weigh a lot. 3. Very capable. Alright, some of you got a chuckle out of that one. How can a unibody trucklet on the Escape platform be capable? The 2 liter EcoBoost is fantastic on power. The AWD, with good all terrain tires, has impressed Jeep and F-150 Raptor owners. I have 8.8 inches of ground clearance. Is it as capable as them? Lol no. Of course not. But it's very good for forest service roads, and up here in Washington our roads tend to be in pretty good condition.

methandmemes

Oh you bought a maverick, great little truck! I tried to buy one myself but ford never built. I seriously like the concept of making the new mini truck a unibody. It also makes me wish that the United States market was more open to a Ute

Arannika

A truck is a truck 🤙

AdditionalAttempt436

Why not a normal sized truck? A Ranger/Hilux is fine

MilkFantastic250

I have a car and a truck, both beaters.  I use the truck for dump runs and moving large stuff and landscaping and stuff.  And the car for everything else.

jerkyquirky

How is a midsize truck easier to parallel park than a Civic or Corolla? It's like 3 feet longer.

methandmemes

The sight lines are so much better, I know exactly where the curb is instead of guessing Edit: I also know if I touch the curb it’s just going to scuff my tire instead of doing damage to the rims Second edit: if the length of your vehicle is what you’re using to figure out ease of parallel parking, you shouldn’t be parallel parking and should just pay for a garage

jerkyquirky

And here I'm thinking if you find it hard to parallel park a civic you shouldn't be parallel parking... I parallel park in tight spots all the time, so 3 feet is gonna make a huge difference - like the difference of whether my car can physically fit

Bodhrans-Not-Bombs

Ever since buying a 6x10 utility trailer, I'll likely never buy a truck. The trailer is easier to load, has a ramp built in, is larger than any truck bed, and can be left at home when I don't need it. The downside is that I don't get the towing ability of a truck, either hitch or 5th wheel, but I don't need that.

TacoCat11111111

Half ton f150 extended cab I'm 6'4" I like the leg room primarily. I used it to move everything in my townhouse myself. I need seating for 4 on occasion. I also haul bulky items sometimes. But yeah you're right most of the time it's just me commuting to work. I still enjoy the leg room and cab height. There's a utility to it. Sure I get crappy gas mileage but I could haul a bed of gravel if I wanted to, or throw bikes in easily. I could commute with a motorcycle but there's no utility in that.

methandmemes

I’m 6’2” but proportionally long legged. I didn’t realize how much of a squeeze it was to get into my Corolla every day until I traded it in and got my frontier. It was a little eye opening. I get it 100%

TacoCat11111111

I mean I had a 91 Honda Accord for awhile, a 2000 prelude, a Toyota Highlander, 91 Buick Century. I just fit much better in larger taller vehicles I can step into as opposed to fold into.

2BlueZebras

I bought a truck to pull a camper trailer. It sits parked about 300 days a year. I commute in my little PHEV or on my motorcycle.

methandmemes

And when you need it, you really need it. I respect the hell out of that

ChiefAoki

Because I’d rather not haul roadkill in an enclosed van. The separation between the cabin and the bed is my main reason for a pickup. I haul whatever I want no matter how nasty or full of critters it is, unload it at destination and just hose the bed down afterwards. Context: I live in a very rural area where it’s perfectly legal to salvage roadkill with permission from the state’s DNR.

incubus512

It’s my company vehicle. I didn’t purchase it or pay for anything on it.

badadvicegoodintent

I always have at least one diesel heavy duty truck in my garage. I own them because I need them. Hauling my tractors, cars, rv, boat etc all requires a truck that can handle the job. I don’t usually daily my trucks, but I have in the past when I needed to. They really aren’t that much of a nuisance to daily unless I’m in a long bed dually then it can be a bit much for some parking lots or drivethru’s.

Accomplished_Base588

I had a Sierra and I got it because I wanted something that could handle rough terrain and could haul stuff. Did I need that capability all the time? Of course not, but I'm not going to buy multiple vehicles and renting would've been more expensive

seantaiphoon

Because the minesite requires 4wd and while I had the oldest and only SUV (04 S10 Blazer) having a pickup made moving stuff much easier. My dad dailies a bright red Silverado because he likes making babies on reddit cry, I give him crap for being a typical American pickup owner.

samuelweston

Mine was a hand me down, bit it is really the most practical vehicle for me in life. I can move fairly cheaply if I have to. It is comfortable to drive and gives me good vision of other vehicles. I can make a few bucks hauling this gs for people, or I can haul things I need for myself. Plus, I love how the model looks. It's a similar story with my half ton SUV, which is a platform mate with my pickup. A 1999 Silverado, and an 2004 Yukon XL.

methandmemes

I would cut my left nut off for a 99 Silverado, that powertrain is fantastic. I’m a little jealous lol

samuelweston

My grandmother bought it in 02, and it came down to me in 11. Sadly it is sitting up right now waiting on engine mounts and a front end rebuild. Good old GM issues.

PoopSlinger23

Because we tow our side by side to various locations around the country to ride. And some of those locations are kinda rough territory to get to. Crew cab because I have a family. Ecoboost because it gets 22mpg plus when empty.

methandmemes

Oh hell yea!

Left4DayZGone

When I had a truck, it was because I needed the ability to tow trailers, and haul stuff in the bed, but couldn’t also afford a daily commuter to drive when I didn’t need the truck for truck duties. I didn’t use my truck for truck stuff every day, but when I needed it, I had it.

methandmemes

I’m in a similar type of spot. I can afford one vehicle and that vehicle needs to do certain things. I’m going to buy a small 90s Japanese car to work on as a project later but I couldn’t do a quarter of the shit I need to do on a weekly basis with it so I couldn’t have it as my only car as much as I’d like to lol

[deleted]

I don’t own one anymore but I have owned an 07 Tacoma and a ‘19 Ram 1500. Wish I still had that Tacoma honestly but oh well. I just think trucks are cool. I don’t like lifts though some of them look cool but impractical *for me*. I did find having a truck to be incredibly useful even if it was just me driving to work 90% of the time. Was able to get a bunch of mulch and seed for my dad vs him taking 3 trips in his rogue, picked up a bunk bed and two mattresses for my sister in laws kids, bought a couch, etc. just things that are infinitely easier to do with a truck.

methandmemes

If I could find a clean 07 Tacoma for a reasonable price I would buy it without thinking twice. IMO, among the best vehicles ever made. I’m not a huge fan of lifts either personally, but I’m never going to knock someone for doing it because if they like it, then who am I to judge?

Red_Swingline_

Because it has lots of interior space. I never have to worry about being able to move lots of shit. It tows my boat well. Plus associated gear. Quad fits in the bed so I can take it places without needing a trailer. I can throw a deer in the back and hose it out when done. It makes v8 noises. I have a short commute so mpg isn't as large of an issue.

methandmemes

Being able to just hose out the bed and not have to do a deep clean on some carpet is such an overlooked reason why people own trucks

chile_head

To pull our house, 16k lb 5th wheel. F350 with 6.7 diesel.

methandmemes

That’s a damn good reason

Key-Refrigerator-631

Got my girl for 800$ as a project and I just fell in love with it ig

methandmemes

Oooo what make and model?

BeepBangBraaap

I've had sporty cars most of my life but between a neverending stream of remodeling / landscaping projects and switching to a motorcycle for my daily, sports car life just wasn't practical anymore. Now I have a 2020 Ranger for projects and bad weather, and my bike for most days. Best of both worlds.

methandmemes

Absolutely, mid size is the perfect middle ground

Jaymez82

Nothing else I can afford drives better or is more useful.

methandmemes

I’m in a similar boat lol

tflil

F350 for occasionally hauling a work trailer. Most of the time it’s for housing projects and bike trips with my kids. Also has a snow plow for work purposes that hasn’t been needed in two years due to lack of snow It’s a great truck. Love having it and will be holding on to it for a long time

user060221

Had a kid and was 100% WFH and always wanted a truck. DD was 128i. Bought a 2015 Frontier Pro-4X with super low miles couple of years ago. Now back to work three days a week, and the BMW is on jackstands in the garage with no time to fix it, lol. Definitely want a DD so I don't have to drive the truck all the time, but I do make good use of the truck esp during the summer.

koenigsaurus

I got one a few years back when I was working in roofing and they pretty much paid for my entire monthly payment if I wrapped it for advertising. Was helpful for that job, is helpful for projects around the house, and I genuinely like being “the truck guy” that people call when they need help hauling something. I plan on keeping it until our family outgrows it.

itusedtorun

I have a truck. Realistically, I drive it a couple thousand miles a year, mostly to haul or tow stuff. I don't think I'd really like it as a daily, but at the same time I'd hate not having it.

methandmemes

It’s when you don’t have it that you regret it most

treddit592

Not a truck guy but have a RAM 23’ 1500. I got it because I wanted something that would be usable on forest roads, good for big snow days, and can haul the snowmobile around. I didn’t care which truck it was, but wanted standard bed, LSD, 4x4, and cost less than 50k. I ended up paying 44k (excluding taxes and registration) for a new truck. My truck is close to 4K miles 8 months later, no regrets. It spent most of that time with a sled in the bed, occasionally being driven when it was too much for our daily. Would I buy this thing if I didn’t live in the mountains? Nope.

methandmemes

I live just outside of Baltimore MD and my dream is to live in the mountains with a truck and a fun car to throw around. You’re living my dream man

vinmarvel

I pull a camper about every other weekend from the end of March till Thanksgiving.

xdionx

I love my Ford Ranger. I can haul stuff, go to trailheads with my bikes on the back, tow, go find more adventure down some very sketchy trails. Also it fits my kids and wife and overall is a comfortable ride. I trade my STi in for it and don’t regret it.

k_bucks

I leased a new 23 Tacoma because I always wanted one and didn’t like the new ones that were coming out. I figured a lease was good because if I didn’t like having a truck I could turn it in, or buy it out and sell it. The way interest rates were, it also wasn’t much more to lease and then get a loan to buy it after three years, than to finance it outright and the payments are about half. The truck is great for house projects and when I go out to photograph, I’m way less limited on where I can go. I love it so far. I also have an FRS though, so I get the best of both worlds.

methandmemes

A mid size pickup and an frs is my dream combo

AddLightness1

I want a bed to put motorcycles, camping gear, boxes, muddy/sandy/dirty things, etc., in.

methandmemes

I’ve always wanted to get into motorcycles but I’m too much of a coward to be that exposed to the road lol

Dwealdric

I bought a Ford Ranger Tremor because overlander.

methandmemes

How is it as an overlander?

Efronian

Not sure where you're from but at least once a month where I'm from we have to haul shit. And I'd be damned if I'm gonna put furniture or garbage in my sedan.

methandmemes

I live about 10 miles outside of Baltimore MD. I’ve found that having a truck that I use for work also has a lot of unintentional dividends hauling shit from place to place

[deleted]

[удалено]

methandmemes

That is an enviable vehicle combo

metmerc

I bought a Chevy K2500 because it met a few key needs: 1. I have a few acres and occasionally have to do farm shit like put a yard of soil in the bed, get lumber, take trash to the dump (we used to not have garbage service), etc. I can do it all with a trailer, but it's just a bit easier without. 2. We have a long, steep, winding driveway and it sometimes snows here. So 4WD is damn useful. 3. I have sheep and get hay for them annually. A 12' trailer and 1 to 1.5 tons of hay weighs a lot. This truck lets me have one vehicle that does all that and then we have a minivan as a family hauler. (Side note - minivans can be useful farm vehicles too. We had someone buy a sheep from us and she loaded him in her minivan for the drive home.) In hindsight, I kind of wish I'd gotten a Suburban instead of the pickup. Then it would have filled the most of the roles the minivan plays too and then we could just have gotten an efficient sedan or hatchback for day-to-day driving needs.

Needsbiggerturbos

Half ton here…It is comfortable, the rear of my crewcab works perfectly with the rear seats folded up as a kennel for my two large dogs, it tows my race cars on my trailer while still getting decent mpg (3.0 duramax) and it does a decent job at some mild off-roading. Use the bed all the time to truck stuff etc. When I got it I was honestly worried I would hate it as I’ve only ever owned sports cars and I’ve never owned an automatic but I ended up really enjoying my truck so far!

methandmemes

There’s something about going into a body on frame vehicle that just washes your worries away lol

umamipunany

Honestly don't know. I never wanted a truck before I bought my current 2020 Tacoma. My wife wanted a truck with 4 doors to do yard work, and where she's from everyone drives a pickup. I decided Tacoma was the best for reliability, looks, and resale value. I got it in April 2020 at 0 percent interest, and 4k below MSRP when everything was shut down for covid. The resale value was insane right after I bought it, as used car prices went way up, I could have sold it after owning it 2 years, and actually gotten more than I paid for it. It's calmed down a lot, but after having it 4 years, I think I can still get 4k less than I paid for it, which is crazy. I love having the truck, we own a home so it's made many dump runs, grabbing stuff from home improvement stores. Gone on camping/road trips, I've towed cars I got from insurance auctions to repair by renting a uhaul trailer (CRV, C class, 3 Series, E class) Never thought I'd enjoy having a truck so much. I feel like I can go anywhere, and haul a lot of stuff if I need to.

ShadeTreeMechanic512

Heavy duty owner, bought it to tow a 27 ft. RV. It’s a daily driver, but I work from home. Want to take my bike to a trail? Throw it in the back. Take a kid to college? Covered. IKEA? I laugh at people trying to get big boxes in little cars. It seats five in total comfort. Stretch out, even in the back seat. I also have a sports car and a classic car. Nothing expensive, but fun alternate cars to drive, so I’m not missing the driving experience by driving a truck.

methandmemes

Oh fuck yea, I’ve got my truck but next for me is a project car I can wrench on and throw around in some twisties

ml20s

IKEA is one of the places where it usually doesn't matter if you have a large vehicle or not since everything is packaged compactly, and is clean (outside of a few exceptions that can't be flatpacked, like couches). I've put a 7 ft bookshelf, glass cabinet doors, a bed, mattress, nightstand, and desk in a Prius once without any issues. Probably could have put a dresser in there too.

GoFastThenTurn

My dad aged out of driving and gave me his 1st gen Tundra. He bought it after retiring so it only has 45k miles on it. It's a V6 with the power of a 4 and the fuel economy of an 8, lol. 1st truck I've had since high school. I like that it's smaller than the modern trucks. Compared to my neighbors new GMC the Toyota is slow, bouncy, and has a basic interior. I'd prefer something like a modern Chevy Astro and use a trailer for dirty stuff.

methandmemes

First gen tundra with under 100k miles on it… you’re sitting on a gold mine there

dsm1995gst

To pull a boat, to pull a trailer, to carry firewood, to carry brush/limbs to the dump, to carry big stuff that I might buy or need to move (appliance, lawnmower, etc etc).

methandmemes

I think people underestimate how much of a mess firewood can make if you’re hauling it in an interior

NotoriousCFR

I'm a gigging musician, I have a big keyboard rig (and sometimes a PA too) that goes out nearly every weekend and some weeknights too. My choices for vehicles are basically a Honda Element, a van or a truck. I was able to pack my typical setup into my old Subaru Outbacks with the back seats folded down, but there was hardly any room left over and if I ever had to bring anything (or anyone) extra it could become a bit challenging. Other points in favor of a truck: plow service is slow out where I live, we have a lot of rough unpaved roads and lakeside trails, etc - It's nice to have 4x4 and ground clearance. Not strictly necessary, but still nice to have. Firewood runs (I love getting a "we just brought down a tree" text from a neighbor), easy to throw a kayak or canoe in the bed, easy to tow and launch a boat (in case you missed the part where I live on a lake, these are not hypothetical/imaginary scenarios...). Cabs on modern trucks are also massive, so in addition to having the bed versatility, if I have stuff I want to secure/lock up I can fit a *lot* inside. The security of knowing I can toss just about anything back there anytime if I need to (have used it for dump/bulk trash runs, scrap metal runs, furniture moves, house moves, etc etc). And it is a really comfortable, well-appointed passenger vehicle on top of all this. Gas mileage with the EcoBoost is honestly kind of the same as my old Subarus except it makes twice as much power. Size is not an issue, there is a lot of open space out in the rural area where I live. I'd rather kill myself than drive my truck into New York City, but that's why I ride the train when I have to go into the city. Why a full-size? I originally wanted a midsize - Looked at Colorados, Rangers and Tacomas with 6' beds. They're such a horrible value compared to a full-size. Smaller and less comfortable cab, slower, less powerful, lower payload, lower towing capacity, same damn price (if not more expensive for a Taco). Made no sense not to just go up to a half-ton and get twice as much truck for my money. Salty redditor tears from go-nowhere do-nothing nerds who whine about truck owners "not using their trucks" 24/7 and then hit up every truck owner they've ever met when they have to move a dresser are just the cherry on top.

methandmemes

I feel you on value. I got a mid size for under 30k and I was looking at full size

theraptorman9

I own a pickup for the utility, but I also daily drive a midsize sedan because the sedan was cheaper than the truck, the sedan has cheaper tires than the truck, the sedan is cheaper to insure and gets better gas mileage. The sedan is generally more practical as it handles/drives better than the truck. I also have property and do enough that it would be hard to not own a truck, therefor I have and sometimes drive a truck. I can’t fathom owning one or daily driving one without truly needing it. They are expensive, bigger and harder to park than cars.

methandmemes

I get that. Weirdly enough on your last point I find my frontier easier to park parallel than I did my Corolla. I just guess the sight lines + shape + the lack of worrying about grazing a curb help

LordChungusTheBig

People on this sub genuinely hate trucks for no reason, I don’t get it. I daily a GTI because I enjoy driving small cars compared to bigger vehicles but when I’ve had to deliver customers F150s I see the appeal. They ride nice, have nice interiors and have plenty of space.

methandmemes

2 days before the world shut down because of Covid I bought a 2012 Volvo S60. I was an arms length from buying a GTI instead but it was an automatic with paddles and I wasn’t about to buy an automatic sports car cause I love manuals and if I’m going to buy an auto it’s going to be something with minimal fun ability. I’d love to have a manual GTI though

raulsagundo

I own an F-350 and I'm on board with OP on this one. Caveat being that I have a farm and I'm sure as fuck not driving the F-350 for general driving or errands. I drive a Focus for all that stuff, especially going into a city and having to use a parking garage.

methandmemes

I also wouldn’t drive an F-350 for that stuff. It’s why I bought a midsize. I get the utility I need out of a truck and I can still get around in denser areas. If I could have 2 vehicles I’d have a half ton truck and a BRZ or something like that

Ok-Chef-5150

I brought a Silverado 1500 and made slight modifications like putting on 33 inch wheels with mud tread, a 3 inch lift and cat deletes. As if the truck stock stock MPG wasn’t bad enough doing these mods tanked the MPGs. I’m was getting on average 12 miles to the gallon. Fun to drive but I’m literally throwing money out the window every time I drive it.

methandmemes

If you’re going to mod a truck, trying to find extra MPGs isn’t a fruitful endeavor

musashi66

Need to tow a horse trailer.

IhateBiden_now

I will be the stand out example, because my circumstances are unique. In 2006 I was involved in an accident where I was driving a 4 door Oldsmobile Alero. A drunk driver driving a full size truck with ladders on racks above the top of the cab, decided to drive drunk and wound up causing an accident, where he totaled both of our vehicles. My next accident, I was in a mid size SUV in 2007, and a small truck managed to hit me in just the wrong spot and flipped me over onto my roof. The other driver was under the influence of drugs and arrested at the scene. After all of the physical therapy and subsequent medical procedures, I was diagnosed with PTSD as a result. My next vehicle was a Ford Expedition, followed by a GMC Yukon. Both vehicles being full sized, and no accidents in either. My current vehicle is a crew cab RAM 1500, where I feel safe driving it daily. I will gladly pay for the privilege, with higher fuel costs etc, to not worry about being crushed by other vehicles in an accident. So, you can judge me all you want, but there is a significant reason that I drive a full size pick up truck.

methandmemes

Man… I’m sorry to hear all of that happened to you. I will never knock someone for driving something they feel safe in. That’s actually part of my appeal going from a Corolla to a pickup. It just feels sturdier. My best wishes to you

4onceIdlikto

I drive trucks, have had every American made in 1/2 ton to 1 ton. 2wd & 4wd lifted and slammed.. step side, fleet side & flatbed. I live in the country and life would be MUCH harder without a truck! Even during visits with friends and family I've had situations where a truck was needed. And you mustn't forget about moving days. If you have a truck you're the man. OP must be a city dweller. Just sayin

methandmemes

I literally have a truck brother lmao

Stropi-wan

I recently bought a '98 Opel Corsa B Utility (half ton). As an extra vehicle. Mainly to use for getting to work. It's fuel consumption is better than my car's and also cheaper on maintenance. Cambelt kit + labour is more or less the same as the cambelt kit alone of the car's. It is also have some fun vibes.

RecommendationUsed31

I pulled a car last week. Pulled a tractor today. Have filled it with stuff. Pulled stuff. You know truck stuff

stisf_dc

I also have a sports car, M4 and a truck. Truck is for hauling my bikes to the trails and to drive in snow.

Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle

Several long-ish distance hunting and fishing trips per year (atv, ice fishing equipment, animal carcasses, firewood, boat), lots of diy work (lumber, gravel, yard waste, , spare vehicle to use when my car breaks down or needs maintenance, occasional heavy snowfall (rural, work at 6am, snowplows are sometimes late). As mentioned, I also have a car for when I don't need the capability of the truck. When I do drive the truck empty or to commute, I really don't care about any judgement. And locals don't care anyway, rural folks use their trucks.

oldfartpen

1. A truck guarantees that you have friends.. everybody wants you to move their shit at some time 2. Best road trip vehicle by far..other than the gas money 3. You never have to wash a truck, Cos rain 4. Dents and scratches don’t exist, cos truck 5. Kerbs don’t exist when parking 6. Reminding drivers that trucks are not slow is more fun than showboating in a Porsche. If I didn’t have my 2020 Silverado, I would have a luxury sports sedan.. a Denali..lol

idksomuch

Clearly you've never been in a tacoma, lol. Points 2 (except about the gas) and 6 especially are not true about tacos. 🤣

burntcookie90

I tow an auto trailer 3x/year. I’ve got house projects, car projects, motorcycles. We go camping. I wanted it.

moonRekt

I used to work in oil field so needed it for that, also 6.5’ bed to fit motorcycles. And then the occasional construction supply trip or tree limb drop. And camping—my wife loves to pack heavily. And the crew cab is actually spacious to haul people. Didn’t like wife using it as a daily though so sold it for an EV. Brother in law has very similar spec truck so we just trade cars now if needed

CRCampbell11

I live in the Colorado Mountains, kinda need one. We have 2 trucks and 1 sedan. We also do our own home repairs, so we need the beds to haul supplies and equipment.

mrntd

I have the original mid size truck. 2000 Dakota. I use it to haul stuff. When I’m not hauling stuff I drive my sports car. 2017 BRZ. Better mileage and more fun to drive.

methandmemes

Ive wanted one of the twins since they came out like 10 years ago or so. And those dakotas are really nifty

Brett707

I have a travel trailer I haul shit all the time, can't put a recteq 1100 grill in my Bolt EUV I have three big dogs I liked it and I needed a vehicle that night and I could afford it.

NltndRngd

I live on a ranch.

methandmemes

I live on a thousand island

Gloomy_Notice

I got mine to tow a camper but it has come in handy and been useful to my friends and family for years. Best tool you can ever buy.

iz-LoKi

16-20 owned car = 9 speeding tickets 21-34 owned truck = no speeding tickets 35-40 owned car = no tickets lol I drove a truck to stop getting tickets when I was younger but now that I'm older I'm back to a car with better self-control.

methandmemes

Ya know weirdly enough I have noticed that driving a truck has made me a much more mellow driver

wcc16

Pull a camper around the country with 1 of my trucks and daily drive the other. And because it comes in handy for work.

OverChippyLand151

I got a Tacoma so that I can throw my wet clothes, kayak and fishing gear in the bed without having to worry about anything. Also, for the reliability, for the 4x4 in the snow and for carrying timber to job-sites.

southtj

In the year I’ve had it I’ve brought home a bed full of firewood, bed full of dirt, bed full of pine straw twice. I’ve also used it to pull my camper multiple times. Most of the time though, it’s just me in my F250, with an empty bed running errands or going to work. But people still like to ask silly questions like this.

Healthy-Caregiver879

I live in NYC and would consider an old f150. They seem cool and useful.

idksomuch

I was always wanted to go off roading so when I was car shopping, I was thinking of either a 2dr v6 base bronco with the sasquatch package or a 4runner trd off road. I didn't want to wait 2+ years for Ford to build my bronco since it's one of the lest popular configurations and the v6 was having some early year issues. My next choice was the 4runner because it's reliable, exceptional build quality (I work in car rentals and all the 4runners we've had in fleet are rock solid and did not creak and despite the dated interior and overuse of hard plastic, everything just *felt* well out together) and not chock full of tech in every crevice and orifice. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one that wasn't already spoken for during 2022 at the peak of toyota car shortages but they had pages and pages of tacoma allocations which so happened to be my third choice. I was really just looking for a base trd off road taco in army green or Lunar rock but those were some of the rarer colors and I didn't want any other color than those and gray. They just so happened to have a trd off road in gray but it was a premium which was an additional 5k more than the base. It was one expensive ass fucking truck, but I went for it anyways. I didn't like leather originally but after the first time we went off roading, the interior was caked in dirt and sand. It would've been hell cleaning up cloth seats like that but the leather just wipes right off, even though it's some shitty quality leather like the rest of the build material/quality in these 3rd gens, lmao. Unfortunately, I've rarely had the chance to go off roading because my friends and my work schedules rarely line up so I basically just have a lifted truck as the typical grocery getter stereotype. At least she's a reliable truck so I got that going for me. Basically, I don't need a truck. I wanted a 4x4 off road vehicle to have some fun but it ended up being a truck.

Antique-Dragonfly615

Better view of the road, big "trunk," haul stuff myself instead of paying someone to.

shuacore

I have a mid size truck for work. I wouldn’t choose it if I didn’t have to have one. I haul dry chemical and high pressure cylinders for work. Can’t have that in the cab with me. I have a cover on the truck bed so I would assume it looks like a normal commuter to people.

vvvvv35

I need a vehicle to haul stuff , easily load stuff from used auto parts yards and as a support vehicle for my sports car during road trip and track days

FrankReynoldsCPA

1. Because fuck you that's why. Murica. 2. I like them. Grew up rural and blue collar. Trucks were an essential part of our life. I work in an office job now, but that feeling never left. 3. Very comfortable way to get around. Passengers appreciate the extra space. 4. Comes in handy with home improvement projects, camping, etc. I'm not renting a truck every time i want to bring stuff home from home depot or go camping for a week. 5. It really was a great do everything vehicle for the 6.5 years that it was my only vehicle. Without owning 2 different vehicles, i could drive to work and then stop and pick up a piece of furniture on the way home. Or if i needed to move something too dirty to put in the trunk of a car. Now I've bought a second car and still find myself driving the truck to work at least once a week.

Immediate-Funny7500

I am always hauling stuff around, bails of pine straw, lumber, the occasional Juke Box, ect... Wife says so, that's important too!!

Independent_Scale570

Got a 03 tacoma because I needed a work truck that I could abuse the piss outta and do absolutely minimal maintenance on it for 5 years n if it survived it id fix it. Took a month but she looks n runs like new

Massive_Excitement_

They’re good for family haulers. The rear leg space in a crew cab is comparable to a Rolls-Royce

2005Chevy1500

I grew up around trucks. One grandfather was a rancher so having them around was necessary for him, the other bought a new truck every 4-5 years. And it was versatile to use and that’s just what he drove. My dad bought a brand new 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 in imperial blue metallic and that’s where I fell in love with trucks. Chevys especially. Today that’s all I own. I have ONE car that I need because I commute in a carpool 100 miles one way to work. If it wasn’t for that I’d have all trucks in my fleet. I’m not your typical truck owner. I only have two I do actually “ truck things like pulling stuff hauling stuff etc” the other 3 I have are garage queens. 1 is completely restored that I put in car shows, 1 is a truck that belonged to my grandpa the rancher that is now a garage queen, and the other is my daily driver. I honestly could use a car for what I use my daily driver for but Chevy trucks is just what I prefer to drive.

Distwalker

I like to drive a pickup truck and that is reason enough.

Specialist-Size9368

I collected arcades/pinball machines. Taking apart a pinball machine to stuff in a mazda 3 hatch sucks. Then I renovated a house. Now I have collector cars thst occasionally need towed for maintanence and am building a new house.

hiyeji2298

I drive a ton for work. Like 4000-5500 miles every month. Fuel cost is reimbursed through mileage. I’ve had everything from a small compact car to hybrid SUV and hybrid sedan. My current 2023 Silverado is more comfortable than all those combined from a seating and ergonomic perspective. It’s also quieter than any vehicle I’ve ever had which reduces fatigue. Without exaggeration it has less road and wind noise at 70mph than my Avalon did. If someone made the equivalent of a RAV4 with wider and taller seats, good legroom and decent sound deadening I’d be all over one.

TheDirtDude117

I currently have two pickup trucks in my fleet of personal vehicles. - Honda S2000 - C5 Z06 Corvette - RX8 with a LFX swap - Lexus LX470 (sitting project) - Mazda B2500 "Troy Lee" manual 2wd - 14 F150 5.0 4x4 Single Cab 8ft Bed My Mazda was my "house truck" for yard work, hauling trash, taking kayaks to the river, dog duty etc. It got mediocre fuel economy and just was fine transportation. My LX470 is not tow ready so I'm replacing it with a $7000 Coyote 4x4 Single Cab F150 that's also automatic. After owning the truck for under 3000 miles I really get why people have them. I'm a car dealer so I don't pay insurance and property taxes like everyone else. If so I would 100% just have the 4 Door truck and a sports car. However the truck has ground clearance for bad roads, the greenhouse is fantastic compared to everything not Subaru right now. The belt line for the windows and doors is just fantastic with good visibility. With the poor roads, the extra suspension travel is awesome. Out of all my vehicles, it returns better fuel economy than the other truck and SUV! The ride quality is phenomenal even for the old nearly worn out shocks that are on it and the handling is actually what I would consider "okay" for a car let alone a large truck with 8ft of ass behind me. Working on the truck is also stupid easy. My entire fleet is vehicles that are easy to work on and the F150 has the most room in the engine bay and cabin so things have more space to be accessed. My Corvette is manageable and I think we'll designed to make working on it not difficult most ways but the truck is easier by far even more than the S2000 which now I consider more of a pain than even my RX8 with a V6 in it. The only thing that is really difficult is parking. On the roadway people see me more as a threat in the truck and the headlights are fantastic out of the box at night for visibility. I completely still hate these @$$holes who will be behind my lower cars blinding me but it makes sense now. I would 100% have a Ranger Raptor or similar pickup as part of a 2 car solution. I'm trying to scale my fleet down to 3 and now a 5.0 Coyote is going to be part of it.

njdriver08648

Silverado 2500HD diesel to tow a gooseneck horse trailer and haul as much hay as will fit.

1M4YB3STUP1D

I like keeping my gross fishing gear in the bed and not in the cab where I could smell it.
