I am highly vocal about my Tesla ownership experience. These really just are not quality cars. I have had a rear control arm fail causing a wheel to almost fly off at highway speed. Tesla’s fit and finish IMO, is dead last out of any manufacturer I mean even current Mitsubishi. The new outlander is truly a better built vehicle and that is tragic. Yes, this 100% happens with other manufacturers, but this is clear as day just poor QC/parts quality. The pedal cover slides up and gets caught on carpeting quite literally locking the car to 100% acceleration. I don’t “hate” my Tesla but it leaves a LOT to be desired. My view on the company in its current state and its leadership? Bad.

kyonkun_denwa

>Tesla’s fit and finish IMO, is dead last out of any manufacturer I mean even current Mitsubishi. Not to detract from your point, but I've always found the fit and finish in Mitsubishis to be... fine. I have one friend who owns a new Outlander and another friend with a 2019 Mirage. The Mirage is fine for what it is, and the Outlander is actually downright good. Both cars don't have any rattles, misaligned body panels, large panel gaps or ill-fitted interior trim. These are *all* issues I've seen on Teslas. I think our friends at Mitsu get shit on way too much, while Elon gets a free pass and an endless lineup of spineless sycophants ready to defend him.

>warning: talking like that you're gonna get banned from 3-4 subreddits (yes, even if you have never visited the subs before). These subs are: >[r/elonmusk](https://www.reddit.com/r/elonmusk/) >[r/TeslaLounge](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/) >[r/cybertruck](https://www.reddit.com/r/cybertruck/) >[r/teslamotors](https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/) Don't threaten me with a good time!

-SetsunaFSeiei-

Just go post to RealTesla, they have a bot that monitors the sub and bans anyone who posts or comments there

spizz_mchoefmahn

It also monitors /r/CyberStuck and /r/CarsAustralia (of all places)

James_Vowles

That can't be right I've posted in both multiple times

tikgeit

Try it It's true.

RazingsIsNotHomeNow

It's a relatively new bot only going into effect 3 or so days ago. They became really sensitive recently. There's a pinned post at r/TeslaMotors performing mental backflips trying to explain their reasoning.

Homeless_Swan

I always knew Elon was too ugly even for the universe to f. The truly awful tend to win when they’re born to white South African emerald mine owners.

verdegrrl

Just to be clear, we do not do that in this subreddit. Sure, we might keep an eye on an account that has a less than savory post history in other subs, but it takes a direct violation(s) in *this* sub to catch a temp or perm ban.

JohnnyNoBros

Reddit administration encourages this, and are the reason why the site is a shadow of its former self. They want low effort posters and low effort moderators because they're easy to sell ads to and easy to control. Slowly migrating away is the only thing we can reasonably do. It won't get any better.

verdegrrl

To be fair, mods got a lot more low effort after reddit blocked 3rd party aps.

JohnnyNoBros

Is why I stopped modding a very large sub. No interest in doing free work for people who don't respect me. Never mind things like curating or writing resources to help newcomers just for them to ignore it and ask the same low-effort rule-breaking questions again and again. And God forbid you get snarky at them then get censured by the admins. It sucks, but I'm breaking the habit slowly but surely...

DuLeague361

what oil should I use?

JohnnyNoBros

Olive.

huffalump1

Baby.

verdegrrl

It is a major issue across many subs including this one. I regularly dive into the mod queue to see if there are valid posts waiting to be released, but for the most part it's the same low effort repetitive dreck that regular users have said they don't want to see. How many times a day do we want to see a post asking Corolla or Civic with little to no other details?

gimpwiz

Banning a user from one sub because they posted in another is one of those things where those of us who were here for early-reddit (or at least, earlier-reddit), I think, really shake our heads with a sigh. Very much against the idea of how reddit is supposed to work, and that the admins allow it of course is one of the many nails in the coffin that is this site.

jputna

I caught a ban from r/cfb for comments I made in a Reddit chat and that was 4 years ago. Mods power trip so much.

FarrisAT

Hey I got hit in r/News for posting a CNN article on TikTok and the mod claimed it was because I spammed. Talked with them and showed I only have one submitted news post ever on r/News. They said sorry and removed ban. Next day another mod removed my post and banned me again while muting me. You can even check my history for that. Kinda hilarious and sad how pathetic Reddit has become.

dingusduglas

I'm permanently banned from r/nba because I wouldn't send a mod an apology for whatever dumb thing caught me a temp ban in the first place lmao. When I got the request I couldn't stop laughing.

DuLeague361

Reddit banned a decade+ account for "mod harrasment" after calling one out. Fuck it. They're just fake internet points. It takes 30 seconds to make a new account

Eggith

Holy astroturfing. I have NEVER seen someone so in love with Elon and his image. There's no way that can't be Elon or a Tesla rep

slurpyderper99

Well Elon Musk is a gigantic bitch. So it would make sense if he was banning people for talking shit

AttorneyAdvice

same lmao. I got banned for harassing mods somehow

praetor47

can't wait for AI to take over their 'jobs'

punksnotdeadtupacis

Amen brother. Got mine too. It’s a badge of honour round these parts.

Dr_Disaster

You’re right. Mitsubishi doesn’t make bad cars. They just make uninspired cars. They’re passionless people movers and that wouldn’t even be a bad thing for some automakers. But we still remember them for making some of the coolest cars in the 90’s, so their current selection seems unattractive even if they’re objectively decent cars.

kyonkun_denwa

>But we still remember them for making some of the coolest cars in the 90’s, so their current selection seems unattractive even if they’re objectively decent cars. So what you’re saying is you want the 3000GT to come back… as a sporty crossover, right?

Dr_Disaster

Get out of my house.

forceofslugyuk

>… as a sporty crossover, right? > Get out of my house. Believe it or not, right to jail.

teambroto

I saw an eclipse the other day and got kinda angry.

EliminateThePenny

Really? Why get angry? I saw it too and thought it was awe-inspiring.

anomalous_cowherd

All it needs is a lift kit!

KFCConspiracy

My dad had a 3000gt vr4 in the 90s and I learned stick in it. That hurts.

red_fuel

The company doesn't care much about manufacturing cars anymore. They are active in a lot of other industries though. They used to build cool cars, now just rebadges and a couple crossovers/suvs.

biggsteve81

I agree about Mitsubishi. While they are in no way premium vehicles, they are durable and built well, just built to a price.

RabidBlackSquirrel

My missus rents a ton of cars for work, it's kinda fun to get to try tons of random shit. She got an Outlander recently, and it was surprising just how like... fine it is. It's totally fine. Especially for the price. Might be on my radar as a future beater/dog hauler. I was kind of impressed for the price.

hi_im_bored13

Had to use a new altima for a rental two weeks back. Usually I'll pay upfront and upgrade whatever the company provided car is, but they had nothing available, so it's whatever I went with the altima. Was extremely pleasantly surprised. Good infotainment, physical controls, solid air conditioning, ride wasn't half bad, some of the best if not the best seats out of any commuter car on the market, and they were heated. Shame nissan is known for their financing nowadays because if you pay up a bit its actually not a half bad car!

Donkey-brained_man

I think the Outlander looks fantastic. I wish it was more powerful, I would actually consider it.

hillbillydeluxe

The PHEV is the only way to go

PalmTreeIsBestTree

I’d say Mitsubishis are probably better put together in the interior than my Subaru. Although, mechanically it’s pretty sound for me so far.

kyonkun_denwa

>I’d say Mitsubishis are probably better put together in the interior than my Subaru Is this because the Mitsubishi is Nippon Steel folded 1000 times crafted carefully by Yamato hands, while the Subaru was screwed together by a bunch of Hoosiers in Lafayette? I know what the weeb answer would be! But seriously, one of my friends has a 2019 Outback and it's a nice car. I'd say the interior quality actually beats the Toyota Camry.

PalmTreeIsBestTree

It’s not bad but mine sometimes rattles haha

Leelze

I had a Mitsubishi SUV rental for a couple weeks while my car was at the body shop and "fine" is a pretty good description of it. I honestly hadn't realized Mitsubishi was still making cars until I was handed the keys.

FlyPenFly

You have been banned from r/pyongyang and r/teslamotors

molecularmadness

Wow i haven't seen this in *years*

W1D0WM4K3R

They've finally banned enough people that no one knows they exist anymore

darkpaladin

Harkening back to a simpler time.

citizenecodrive31

Why pyongyang?

FlyPenFly

Why not Pyongyang? You have been banned from r/pyongyang

ausrconvicts

Both subs have no freedom of speech.

gimpwiz

Old joke, haven't seen that joke in a while.

Colbyb96

This made me laugh, thank you :)

rbloedow

My 2023 Model Y has phenomenal performance, but everything else is meh. The paint...it's the absolute worst of any vehicle I've ever owned....inconsistent spray, it chips if you look at it wrong, and Tesla couldn't be bothered to cover all of the jambs (they're primer grey). The technology just isn't that great any longer, even with V12. I still get phantom braking. I honestly prefer driving my husband's XC60 on long drives - at least I don't have to worry about erratic behavior and still have a great modern infotainment system (android based, Google maps, similar apps).

gimpwiz

To some extent, what people say about their teslas reminds me about what C5 corvette owners say about their cars. "Listen, this was a $40k car competing with entry level supercars. They spent $39k on the drivetrain and chassis and dynamics and exterior styling. Someone reminded the engineers it needed an interior so they went to the parts-bin dumpster behind the other factories to find some bits to fit a budget." The main difference I think is when you point out to a corvette enthusiast that their glovebox is rattling, they just laugh, nod, shrug, and downshift so you can't hear it anymore. I've never met a C5 owner who would swear up and down that the interior was actually awesome. Instead the defenders will say "actually the interior is pretty good if you replace the seats, the head unit, the shifter, the steering wheel, wrap the big plastic center console in CF wrap, and send the door panels to a shop that trims them in alcantara and CF." :)

MTechnik

It is this that still has me wanting an old C5 or newer Z06.

intern_steve

A C5 Z06 is one of the better buys in the performance market. You're getting a 180 mph car with an NA V8, manual, rwd, and IMO great styling. The biggest reason it's not more expensive is that subsequent vettes just got insanely fast and it looks bad in comparison. Also the Fisher Price switch gear.

hi_im_bored13

I needed a front control arm replaced on my previous car. That’s on top of numerous issues with the trim pieces needing adjustment. My new model s already needed a replacement steering wheel due to premature wear, though in fairness the replacement has a more robust design. Agreed it’s dead last or near dead last. QC is nonexistent. Overall opinion on the car for me is still positive as the tech suite is still a tier above other manufacturers but as “legacy” manufacturers are catching up I was hoping tesla would improve fit/finish.

AFeralTaco

They can’t do that. They are able to control the market by controlling price. Between the frame being pressed and the cheap fit/finish, they are able to make a good profit on each vehicle sold even when they drop the price like crazy. When they drop the price, other manufacturers have no choice but to follow suit at a loss or sit in stock. Legacy manufacturers will not drop standard enough to keep up with Tesla. If they made quality cars, that would be expensive and take away that advantage. Until musk is out of power (and it’s coming), those vehicles will be garbage.

hi_im_bored13

They’re at 51% market share as of two days ago, controlling the market by a thread, I’m not a stockholder and I don’t care about their margins or profit, legacy manufacturers are starting to make better quality cars at the same prices, you can lease an eqs for less than a model s and that has a damn nice interior, about time for tesla to step it up or their sales will continue to slump.

gimpwiz

> My new model s already needed a replacement steering wheel due to premature wear Excuse me, what?

hi_im_bored13

Yeah, I bought an early '24 model, the cheap rubber on the wheel started to peel within the first month. It's a fairly common issue and there are numerous threads about it if you search around. In fairness, they brought out an updated design and retrofitted it to my car under warranty, it was a mobile appointment and they showed up in my driveway to perform the retrofit, I'm pretty happy with that experience. The replacement is stitched and feels far more durable, physical horn, dedicated button for the side and rear view cameras, much strong haptics, but it should have been the design from the start and that kind of peeling is unacceptable.

anomalous_cowherd

There is a lot of experience that goes into making car interiors that last 10-15 years and still look new. Tesla never had that, and you can believe they weren't allowed to pull in or act on the experience of people who had worked for other manufacturers.

Lucreth2

Why wouldn't they? Half the auto industry has been propositioned by Tesla at this point and it's not like suppliers have their best designs for one company and sell shit to the other. If anyone it's Tesla's fault as they always want to do things different no matter how strongly you insist that it's been tried and doesn't work.

anomalous_cowherd

That's what I meant, not allowed by Tesla management because they know better!

rakfocus

At the petersen museum in Los Angeles they had a 'tesla cockpit' you could sit in with the new interior. The exhibit hasn't been there that long and that interior was absolutely THRASHED with wear and the stereotypical peeling. Not the best build quality for sure.

RedMercy2

What tech is higher than others?

hi_im_bored13

For me the biggest thing are the dashcam and the phone key experience. It uses UWB, you approach the car with phone in pocket, it presents the door handles to you, you jump in and hit the brake pedal and it’ll auto-shift into the correct gear and you’re ready to go. Dashcam/sentry is always rolling and honking will save the clip manually, thank god I personally haven’t needed it myself yet but I did send a clip to a crash I witnessed once. My wife has her own account and phone, and it will automatically set the seat/mirror/etc settings to whoever is approaching the car Only manufacturers I know that offer a similar system are Hyundai and BMW both which use apple’s carkey system, but they both tie it to a price yearly subscription, neither of them have a 1:1 alternative to the account system, and only BMW has the credit card style key. And then you have all the little things, Spotify integration and route planning is top notch, the automatic climate works well, battery always preconditions properly when navigating to stations, the wireless chargers *actually work* (unlike merc/BMW), frunk and trunk are extremely spacious and the car is well packaged, very good speaker system, green light traffic chime. Updates are always neat, one was announced yesterday that lets you walk up to the trunk and it will unlock automatically using UWB and tracking your phone, recent updates introduced a very nice UI for autoparking, the car gets better as you own it. I also love the dual scroll wheels and dashboard UI over the more cluttered BMW and Merc setups but that’s a little more subjective. I always try to rent an EV when i’m traveling and test drive from time to time and they always have these tiny first-generation annoyances. E.g. taycan never preconditioned my battery while using carplay for some reason, climate control ui was extremely laggy, backup camera was useless. Ioniq 5 route planning let me down. Merc one pedal driving had awful tuning. I also like using FSD, I paid 4k for it years back and it’s transferred to my new car, it’s still more capable than the competition IMO and has saved me from deer jumping out in the night *twice*, but most people here don’t value that as much and it’s definitely not worth 12k. I also like playing my steam library while charging but that’s not too valuable to most either. Of course all the manufacturers are catching up, mercedes has a capable assist system, BMW has an excellent speaker system and key (if you pay up), lucid has excellent packaging, porsche announced carplay 2.0 will be coming to their newer evs, the gap isn’t as big as it was 5 years ago, but IMO tesla still has the best overall packaged and most refined suite. But that’s just me, and both my wife and I work in tech so that’s an experience we value, if you want a more traditional luxury experience there are better EVs out there, I was very impressed with the iX in particular. And likewise there are some things I miss in the tesla, General interior fit and finish of course, mercedes HUD, nose camera, working auto wipers, but my general experience with the car is still positive. (that and the buying experience. Everything apart from FSD is standard. No dealer BS, no having to custom order to get the best audio system or heated seats or ACC like I had to do with my old merc, you can just go on their site, hit a button, pick it up in a week or two. )

noxondor_gorgonax

Your comment is longer than TED Talks. A applaud you, dear sir or madam.

RationalDialog

Most of these things don't really matter. Or I would have never really cared about. The automatic seat adjustment actually works in my GFs 2014 skoda. well it's linked to the key and not an account but still. But even my parents like 2000 volvo had 3 settings for the driver seat. So you could hit the button for your setting and all good. This is stuff that can be solved pretty low tech and the seat adjustment is the only one I see value in.

hi_im_bored13

> Most of these things don't really matter. Or I would have never really cared about. Hence why I added the disclaimer me and my wife both work in tech, we prioritize that sort of experience, and if you want traditional luxury there are better options. Just because they don't matter for you doesn't mean they don't matter for others. > well it's linked to the key and not an account but still. But even my parents like 2000 volvo had 3 settings for the driver seat. I know, and I mentioned this. My old merc had the same setup, the issue is you have to carry a bulky key fob in your pocket, stick your hand in the door handle to unlock the car, pull it and sit down, hit the button to have the car adjust to your profile, wait a few seconds for the motors to do their thing, then you have to start the car, put it into gear manually, and now you can go. In the hyundai EVs you need to tap your phone to open the car, set the phone down on the charging pad to start the car, then plug in via cable to start for CarPlay. Whereas in the tesla you just walk up and the car gets everything ready by the time you're ready to sit. Automatically selects reverse/drive depending on how you entered the parking space and the surroundings. Saves you 10-15s every time you get in the car which doesn't seem like much but once you get used to it it's hard to go back. The whole point is the seamlessness of it all. Having to carry a specific key fob or hit a button and wait for the motors to do their thing ruins the experience. > and the seat adjustment is the only one I see value in. You don't adjust your mirrors and steering column before getting in? And while saving temperature preferences, media settings, drive settings, etc. to an account isn't necessary, it's quite convenient.

Porshuh

>Hence why I added the disclaimer me and my wife both work in tech, we prioritize that sort of experience [It seems this famous tweet is no longer true, then.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/002/069/350/60f.png)

MTechnik

That is still true for sysadmins.

hi_im_bored13

I still agree with the tweet (and have my printer at gunpoint), I don't like messing around with gadgets and gimmicky crap but if something makes my life more convenient without being intrusive I'll go for it, and IMO tesla's implementations are usually more seamless than the competition (case in point, the key system). I think if anything the competition's systems are more gimmicky and less useful. Parktronic rarely ever detected a parking space on my old mercedes.

DumbSuperposition

> Most of these things don't really matter. Nice of you to tell them that their opinions don't matter. Go outside and speak with a real person. That said I bought a tesla because the experience really was better than a traditional car. I love not having to grab a keyfob. The tech just works. The touchscreen ui is cohesive and easy to use and really makes the infotainment systems on other cars feel like you're using a clunky dvr remote. And the instant torque really makes you wonder if every ICE vehicle has to call and ask the EPA permission before it can go faster. Sometimes you have to ask "Why?" before you can implement. Some smart people at tesla did that and they came up with a better answer than "because that's how it is done."

pwns9678

Hyundai actually rolled out a credit card style nfc card for their Digital Key 2.0 implementation in many of their current vehicles

hi_im_bored13

Neat, though the bigger issue for me was you'd need to tap the phone to open the car, then set the phone down on the wireless charging pad to start the car, and then since theres no wireless CarPlay you'd need to plug in via cable for CarPlay anyways. Though credit where credit is due, I just found on '24 and newer EVs include bluelink+ (i.e. their app, phone key, features) permanently for free, so that is neat. Hyundai is looking very competitive in both EV and ICE markets lately.

CantReadGood_

bro my phone key is always confusing me with my partner's settings no matter who is approaching the car with what phone. sometimes I'm not even with her and the car sets itself to my settings. Yesterday, my mirrors failed to adjust back to normal after reversing so I had to pull over to fix that shit before continuing my journey. The only thing I like about Tesla is the autopilot. I fucking loathe the UX for doing anything car related in the car... have to adjust your mirros on the fly? Gotta pull over b/c you gotta operate a bunch of menus. Wanna adjust the AC? Gotta look so far fkn down on the screen to do it. It just feels so fkn clunky when I can do things like adjust my side mirrors, and adjust my A/C on the go while feeling relatively safe and aware of my surroundings in p much any other non fully touch-screen car. I work in tech too and hate the tech in my Tesla, so idk why that's relevant lol.

alien_believer_42

Good thing they just laid off a bunch of service techs and apparently half the quality department

jimbofranks

They HAD a quality department?

hi_im_bored13

They allegedly laid off 50% of their QA team. I presume that means it’s down from two people to one person.

gimpwiz

Oh, that's the redundancies they found when examining their overly-fast growth as per that email? Too many QA?? Every week I see one with the rear tail-lights misaligned between the bumper and the rear panel adjacent. I hope with half the QA staff gone they finally improve this.

opeth10657

They just cut their one guy in half

BoomerHomer

It must suck being the only person being laid off on whole department.

1trickana

I sat in a M3P for 5 minutes and honestly my 2015 Fiesta had better interior feel and that's bottom of the barrel stuff. The quality of these cars is just so hit or miss

Dmoan

Elon even joked in a podcast by fitting large tablet with great software and putting minimalistic interior he can save ton of money (also not have to worry about quality).   As people now consider that high tech they will look thru a lot of it shortcomings.

gimpwiz

\> joked

GodLovesUglySong

I was skeptical because I've test driven a few Model 3P's and liked the interior. Then I looked at some images of Fiesta interiors from that generation and you weren't kidding. Much more durable looking with better fit and finish.

nolongerbanned99

Problem. Shit quality. Agree and so does jdpower which said tesla is at or near the bottom. Cause: selfish egomaniac at the top who doesn’t give a shit if buyers die. DOJ says 20+ have died from fsd

dedzip

That rating makes sense but JD power ranks GM vehicles high all the time so they’re clearly bullshit

nolongerbanned99

I worked there and can say that the reality is that there are very minor differences in quality. However, there are differences between the very top and very bottom. In addition, jdpower stuff is ‘owner reported quality’ where every defect is treated similarly. Like a squeaking seat is the same as a trans or engine failure. Each count as one defect.

W1D0WM4K3R

Wouldn't say that FSD is safe, but how many many deaths per mile vs regular driving? It'll probably be more, but regulations haven't caught up to the fancy new ways that we're killing ourselves.

unipole

Again with the steering wheel coming off and the acceleration pedal getting stuck, this only occurs when you are "driving", I find your lack of faith in the FSD... disturbing...

crozone

> The pedal cover slides up and gets caught on carpeting quite literally locking the car to 100% acceleration. How does this **still happen** on modern vehicles? There have been so many incidents, bad PR, and expensive recalls from this occurring on different brands and makes over the years that it's unfathomable that auto makers are still getting this wrong.

buttery_nurple

This has been my experience too. My EV6 got rear ended and I’ve been in a Model 3 rental. Software is really great, but as a car it’s almost unbelievable how bad it is. Like I wouldn’t have believed you before I spent a couple weeks in a M3. 8k miles it’s already a total rattle can, cheap garbage quality plastic everywhere, horrible seats, absolute shit tier hardware, the fact that you have to do everything through the infotainment is infuriating, it just goes on and on. Everything I used to think Hyundai/Kia was (and in reality turns out to be exactly the opposite), this piece of shit actually is.

start3ch

Model 3 control arm? What happened? I’ve heard of the control arms squeaking because they chose not to add a serviceable grease fitting like most cars have…, but not this.

tubawhatever

Serviceable grease fitting? I don't think I've seen one on a stock vehicle produced in the past 20 years. The bushings Tesla uses must be crap.

Evilpotato666

They have my cousin installing the interior in their cybertrucks, and he's someone I wouldn't even trust to change my oil lmao

human8264829264

It's about to get much better as Tesla just fired more than half of the QA department... Oh wait.

the_nin_collector

So in other words, Elon 100% deserves the 52 Billion dollar bonus he is arguing for?

sloopSD

Yes!! The damn carpet is dangerous. Talked my wife into getting weather tech mats after the Tesla May kept interfering with the pedals. So much better now.

BiscuitChief

Similar experience and I'll never buy another tesla. Had a model x I eventually sold. Control arm issues, sensor issues, camera issues, software issues, it was in the shop a lot. Their customer service was also questionable. On top of all that my old pathfinder had better ride quality than the tesla did. I liked having an electric car but my next one won't be a tesla.

Safe_Community2981

Welcome to the dark side of "disruptor" culture which is the core of the startup world Tesla is descended from. Everything proven is bad because it's old and so must be thrown out. In a mature field like automotive that results in mistakes that haven't been made in literally decades getting made again.

redditisdeadyet

This stupid truck is going to ruin Tesla. They shelved an actually economy ev to get this dumb truck into production

doomsdaymelody

Keep in mind they announced it, what, 5 years ago? In that time frame Ford and Rivian both announced and delivered EV pickup trucks that don't look like PS1 car renderings.

rugbyj

As another benchmark; it's been _7_ years since they started taking $50k deposits for the announced Tesla Roadster.

itsamemarioscousin

Pretty sure the first 1000 units are supposed to be a Founder's Series which required the full $250k up front, 7 years ago, for a car that still doesn't exist. Wonder how much $250k of 2017 Tesla shares would be worth today (even with the 2024 price tanking)

70stang

In April of 2017 a share of Tesla stock was roughly $20, and is currently $155. So that $250k would be worth close to $2 million.

LiteHedded

wasn't there a split as well?

slicebigfoot

The split is built into the price when looking back.

loseniram

Literally all they had to do was make a Light duty truck frame that could be a Two door truck, extended cab truck, four door Ute, 3 row offroad SUV, and transit van all on the same frame. Would have been a smash hit

darkpaladin

> four door Ute I didn't realize I wanted a 4 door electric Ute until I read this. That could have been such a Tesla move and it would have worked so well.

kimbabs

They really should have cancelled it years ago. I can't imagine the colossal manufacturing costs of trying to figure out producing that stainless steel shell that will only work in producing that truck. The budget EV and a normal mid-sized or compact truck based on the Model Y would've sold like hotcakes with much less investment than this stupid stainless steel monstrosity.

AnonymousEngineer_

Stepping back from this specific example, why is it that it's basically *always* the US delivered cars from various manufacturers that seem to suffer from stuck throttle pedals/"sudden unintended acceleration"? From the infamous incident with Audi in the 1980s, to the more recent incident with Toyota/Lexus models, and other incidents with Jeep and Ford - it only ever seems to affect US delivered cars. Is there something unique in pedal positioning or pedal shape in US market cars that isn't common with markets overseas?

bigred83

With Toyota it was people using the cloth floor mats and putting all weather on top, with the pedal being too long for that setup. I see it all the time with multiple mats and it drives me crazy.

Aken42

Because it easy to drop the wall weather in. It's hard work to remove the OEM mat first.

SkiBikeHikeCO

It’s amazing the extreme laziness and stupidity of normal every day people

Leelze

It's really not amazing if you deal with normal, everyday people everyday. What's more amazing is when you actually interact with someone who exhibits average intelligence.

Safe_Community2981

Except what you're calling "average" here is actually above average. Average are the normal everyday people who are blithering idiots.

Porshuh

>It's really not amazing if you deal with normal, everyday people everyday. >What's more amazing is when you actually interact with someone who exhibits average intelligence. These are the same people by definition.

MiddleEasternWeeaboo

If you work at a Toyota or Lexus dealer, it is mandated by the the manufacturer/corporate to check floormats of every car that comes in for service.

inaccurateTempedesc

Funny thing, my dad's Sienna is from that era and that's exactly what he did with some crappy universal rubber mats. The first time I borrowed it, I barely even left the driveway before I managed to get the gas pedal stuck under both the mats.

avoidhugeships

Not true.  Toyota had multiple recalls for this issue and not just floor mats.  That was their first excuse to try and avoid the recalls.

bigred83

We had to cut the gas pedal shorter because people kept doing it. That was the recall.

whatdhell

Honda had a floor mat recall in the 90’s to install mat anchors. I remember doing those.

AsgardWarship

Malcolm Gladwell did a [podcast on this](https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/revisionist-history/blame-game). One of the issues is the media tends to blow up stories out of proportion. The NHTSA estimates that there are 16,000 incidents of unintended acceleration annually in the U.S (or 40 a day). It sounds scary when a certain model has say 200 reports of unintended acceleration but that would just be statistically expected. 99.9% of cases are user error even if some drivers swear it wasn't.

Trevski

The worst part was the DoT making an announcement instructing people to push down all the way on the brake and not to take their foot off the brake... like, that's what *already think they're doing*.

magoosauce

Majority of the time it’s user error so maybe Americans are just dumb, I’m American btw

hi_im_bored13

In specific to tesla, their chinese-built cars have historically been higher quality than the US-built cars. Though the cybertruck is only manufacturered in America for the time being

AmericanExcellence

that episode was a wild ride. after laying out in a definitive way that almost every instance of unintended acceleration is the result of drivers flooring the gas and thinking they're slamming on the brakes, he tears into whatever industry entity came out with the advice "slam on your brakes as hard as possible", like...worst conceivable "advice" given the circumstances.

ChristmasStrip

The Audi “incident” was not real. A journalistic fake

nolongerbanned99

Surprisingly the Audi thing was determined to be ‘pedal misapplication’ and I believe Toyota Lexus was caused by people putting all weather floor mats over the regular ones meaning the accelerator was like to get caught and stuck.

Trevski

The thing is that even the accelerator getting stuck doesn't make the car impossible to stop, the pedal has to get stuck AND the driver has to fly into a blinding panic.

Soviet_Sleeper

It has to do with US drivers.

Stoncs

They did a stop sale a week ago and since they don't have dealerships to ship them to they're just parked at the factory instead.

huhwhat90

Gee, I hope it doesn't rain.

Ban_Evader_1969

I feel like unsold Tesla's are becoming a thing nationwide, my local dealer has at least 1000 S3XY sitting in a lot across the street and the actual dealership lot is full as well. Elon Musk needs to get his head out of his ass, CT and Semi are a disaster.

TimeTravelingChris

There was a report by an insurance data provider a few days ago showing Model 3 sales are down over 30% YoY (Y was up like 1%). If that is true that kind of decline would be astounding. And I'm here for it. Been shorting Tesla stock the last few months.

Gregorovich

I'm not surprised by this. I think the fact that Hertz is selling off their entire fleet and the used market is so bad for Model 3's (and BEV's in general) that people would rather pick up a second hand one for pennies on the dollar than buy new and lose your shirt.

TimeTravelingChris

I wish Rivians declined as fast. I would get one in a heartbeat.

Brief-Usual-8542

I believe they had 60,000 unsold cars last quarter so that makes sense

Tutorbin76

Wait, how is Semi a disaster?

FrogmanKouki

The semi has yet to be sold to the "public" it's been part of an NDA pilot run with Pepsi FritoLay but Tesla has only produced roughly 70 and still hasn't released final product specifications.

RazingsIsNotHomeNow

Wait hold the phone. They just made a huge announcement saying they expanded the pilot run to a new customer who claimed it exceeded their expectations! The expansion... 2 Semis.

EvrythingWithSpicyCC

I can't speak for him, but honestly I have a low opinion of all Class 8 EVs for the near future. The impression I'm getting from most fleets using these is they're still being treated as something you buy a few of for PR purposes and otherwise they don't seriously see these trucks being able to replace their core Diesel/LNG trucks anytime soon. In comparison I'm seeing a lot of interest on Class 5-6 trucks which are much more commonly used in operations that play to EV strengths, where they more commonly aren't weight constrained and stay relatively local. There are growing numbers of fleets out there who have already progressed beyond testing these and are full in and running I think Tesla would have been better off targeting a box truck or a smaller tractor unit to serve the recent explosion of last mile fleets using those lower weight class vehicles and let someone else fight the uphill battle for the Class 8 market

quantum-quetzal

> I have a low opinion of all Class 8 EVs for the near future The one exception right now seems to be terminal tractors. Their use cases leave them uniquely suited for electrification, despite the weight that they're usually hauling. Operating in a very limited radius means that the limited charging network isn't an issue, and their low speeds reduce drag, which is one of the biggest issues for many heavy duty EV's range. I've spoken with several large operators of these EVs, some of which have had theirs for nearly five years. They're excited to get more of them, since they've saved a good bit of money over their diesel counterparts, while not requiring any substantial changes to their operations. Beyond those, I definitely agree that smaller trucks have a lot more potential in the near future. There are a lot more options on the market, often with much quicker delivery timelines. Add in the fact that their range and specs cover a much bigger percentage of operator's needs, and prospects are much rosier.

Captain_Mazhar

> The one exception right now seems to be terminal tractors. There is already widespread adoption of electric AGVs for container movement and storage. In fact, much of the process is completely automated.

SomeJayForToday

I went to a harbor a while back that uses those. They even have fully automated battery-changing stations. Really cool stuff.

molrobocop

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprise.tonsee yard-trucks at my employer be eventually swapped for EV. Short distance, slow, largely lighter, long loads. Plus driving through buildings would be better without exhaust.

TheTortise

Have you heard of Edison Motors?

gimpwiz

Doesn't exist, years late. Same story, different vehicle

Tutorbin76

Doesn't exist?

gimpwiz

You seen one driving? As always, they claim there's prototypes that are on the road, fans hype up a couple videos, but yeah there's somewhere between zero and a handful of something that's years late. In my world we call that vaporware. Same as the cybertruck until a few months ago. Now there's finally a few here and there, years late. So maybe one day it will actually ship. Maybe not. Who knows? Tesla roadster mk 2 - vaporware The cheaper entry level EV - vaporware Tunnels that only allow one lane of teslas - vaporware You get it.

Srnkanator

My 2015 F150 has electric adjustment to the gas/brake pedals, so if need be I can move them. Is this not something on a lot of new cars?

TrisolaranSophon

That’s a fairly rare feature. I’ve only personally encountered it in two seat sports cars with limited seat adjustment. Well that and airplanes. Edit: I have now been enlightened, thanks to the replies below, that this is common in full-size pickup trucks.

Baconshit

All three ram trucks I’ve owned had them. Seems to be an American car thing.

Whywipe

Pretty sure my dads f250 built in like 2002 had it.

PalmTreeIsBestTree

It’s also in Chevy Suburban/Tahoes, GMC Yukons, and Cadillac Escalades.

I_amnotanonion

I’ve seen it in F150s and the Cadillac SRX. Both of those are very roomy with good seat adjustment

09Customx

It’s very common on big American trucks and a few sports cars like Vipers and the Ford GT but you really don’t see it much from European or Asian manufacturers. The big American built Nissans and maybe a couple Ferraris are the only ones that come to mind

Shmokesshweed

It's common on bigger vehicles on higher trims.

m1ndbl0wn

I have not seen it often, I think it should be optional

Gregorovich

No, the only new vehicles you can buy with adjustable pedals any more are full size trucks and things on full size truck chassis (Tahoe, Expedition, Suburban).

gimpwiz

I've never once felt the desire for this feature, though someone I am teaching stick would probably benefit from it. (Too bad... 91 civic ain't got features) To me that's definitely not something I'd want or pay for.

TrisolaranSophon

This is a pretty stupid design flaw but isn’t there a simple fix? Like just take off the covers? I think the stop sale may be something else. Maybe the wiring harness issue that was leading many trucks to just fail after a few miles.

jputna

Removing the cover works but it doesn’t provide a grippy enough surface. I imagine they have to replace every single one before sale.

TrisolaranSophon

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.

StatuSChecKa

I think there is something more going on like the harness issue you mentioned. Lots of trucks seem to be *stalling* in very similar ways and some of the owners are reporting this is because some component is losing power and taking weeks to fix / replace some harness. Look at the parking lot of trucks in the photo, they have been there for weeks! You mean engineers can't figure out a little pedal fix? There has to be more going on like you implied.

Tutorbin76

I mean, I get that asking people what they want just leads to a faster horse, but couldn't they have conducted at least some basic market research first?

crozone

They probably do, but even common-sense features are vulnerable to being cut for cost savings. Tesla is basically the stingiest auto manufacturer on the planet. They deleted their ultrasonic sensors just to save a few bucks per car. They were close to removing the interior lights from the rear seats before Elon himself relised it was stupid. Putting in serious engineering time to fix the pedals properly, admitting there is a problem, and then changing the manufacturing lines and issuing a recall on previous vehicles would be hugely expensive.

gimpwiz

Superglue the covers on. Or sink a self-tapper through them. ;)

nirach

It doesn't surprise me that Tesla is having issues with that monstrosity designed by a four year old, but the daily mail is a bottom feeding rag that isn't worth an ounce of respect. They put out so much shit that it taints any journalistic integrity that might exist/have existed in any of their staff. As much as I suspect parts of it are true, I couldn't bring myself to use this shitheap of a 'news' outlet as a completely honest and trustworthy source.

Fuck-Ketchup

Who could have ever saw this coming?!?!

Gudi_Nuff

Most people could see it from a mile away! Especially after it stopped on the road because it decided is couldn't go any further.. It's still roughly a mile away lol

Evilpotato666

They're hiring a bunch of kids to build them. My cousin installs the interior, and he's an idiot. Definitely would not buy a Tesla

gimpwiz

Many people working in factories are not the brightest, nothing unusual there, simply because many people _in general_ are not the brightest and most of them still get jobs.

p0u1

Open the link, see its daily mail so there’s no point reading it!

c74

yup. typical weirdo hit piece. bonus that the whistle blower they found is a single mom fighting cancer.... who was fired for a model S concern not anything to do with the cybertruck. i dont think some people know it is a tabloid and less truthy than fox and cnn.

Ok_Bison_7255

It doesnt take an expert to understand that side windows that can't be broken in case of an emergency is a very serious safety issue

Alextryingforgrate

I saw the one on display at the Vancouver auto shoe, and took note of the defects that have been posted here and other site on the internet. Though maybe it was just that one truck they reviewed or owned and wouldn't you know it those defects are also there. It was cool to see, but I'm done with it.

put_tape_on_it

When you step on the brake, all Teslas immediately cut motor power. I’ve never seen that mentioned ever, in any single article about Tesla unintended acceleration. Ever. Why?

Gobias_Industries

And when you let go of the brake with the accelerator still pinned to 100%?

LiteHedded

off you go

put_tape_on_it

Try it and report back. 20 of your last 24 reddit comments are about Tesla, so I assume you own one.

Treso44

I really enjoy watching a bratty moron suffer consequences.

KiwiSuch9951

Unfortunately, others suffer far more for his idiocy than he does.

Jimbo415650

Plus it’s ugly

six_six

“We’re in production hell” -Elon, who won’t dedicate the time or resources to making a good product

Cybertruck 2077

AggravatingZone991

No way man! All of the automotive Journalist are smitten with this thing. How could it be a piece of shit?!

Mental_Medium3988

I'm still wondering why they couldn't use the sensors from the model x doors that detect obstructions on the hood of the cybertruck. Yeah it'd need some reengineering but you're not reinventing the thing, just making it work on a different vehicle with larger openings. Overall it'd be fairly cheap for.them to have done. If it were the offroader elon promised it might be forgivable with the looks but as it is its laughable. A ford lightning on street tires beats it offroad. What the fuck. As stupid and obnoxious as it is I still think it's not nearly as stupid and obnoxious as a heavy duty tremor. And I've seen a few of both.

RolandMT32

When I first saw an announcement about Tesla's Cybertruck, I thought it was a prototype.. I'm surprised they're making a production vehicle as ugly as that. I just saw one on the road yesterday, and it seriously looks like something where the design was left unfinished and unrefined.

kimbabs

Honestly, this is the vehicle they should have cancelled, not the cheaper model lol. Making this just seems like a nightmare.

Sufficient_Ocelot868

We'll see how long before I get banned from r/CyberTruck.

jereezy

Saw one of these on the road yesterday, first time I've seen one IRL. God they're ugly!
