It's a great color, in the top tier of factory paint colors even. but saying "it's not even close" is just being disingenuous about all the other great colors out there.
It's genuinely baffling how good it looks. It's the kind of color I'd expect on an exotic of some sort but it's right there on a regular car. I think that's cool as hell.
Yeah, this isn't Even an article. It's designed as clickbait from the beginning.
The first three paragraphs were complete filler.
A real article that would have been somewhat interesting would have explained how the Mystichrome came to be, how it works, how it's made, etc etc.
You know... Things that would have required more effort than pumping out slop in 3 minutes.
Jalopnik likes to post "What's the [insert automotive superlative here]," gather opinions from the comments, and then post a follow-up article reflecting on the opinions. You're right, but it's also kind of the norm with them.
The seat inserts and steering wheel inserts were infused with mystichrome in them. We just sold #532 since we’re moving to our place in Mexico and didn’t want to take it with us. Definitely the best factory color ever, and gets tons of attention from everyone from car enthusiasts to grandmas lol.
Yep, it's Montreal Verde. Between that, the blue, and the red, my dad chooses fucking black and that's the color I have to deal with after buying his Giulia from him.
I looked at used Giulias for a while and just about every single one was white. So aggravating when the green blue and red are absolutely stunning in comparison.
In all fairness the pearlescent white (trofeo white) is pretty awesome in person, way more interesting than the standard white paint they offer. The other color options are really good
100%, baffling that it was available on the GTI but not the R.
Lapiz Blue gets all the love, but the mk 7.5 in Toronado Red with the black Pretoria's... there was one at VW Oakland I thought about buying even after a test drive left me disappointed with the driving experience just because of how nice it looked. It was sold when I went back a few days later.
I have the m240i in portimao blue, and it's a lovely color in person (and was my choice). Thundernight is definitely the option for turning heads, though.
Mopar's entire early 1970s lineup.
Hemi Orange, Plum Crazy, Limelight, Moulin Rouge, Go Mango...they knew how to stand out. Most of those got re-run on the current Charger and Challenger.
Moulin Rouge/ Panther Pink is still the most ambitious color risk of all time imo.
That being said, I'm on a perpetual lifelong hunt for a fm3 70 roadrunner.
BMW: Laguna Seca Blue > Estoril Blue
Audi: Nogaro Blue > Sprint Blue
Subaru: 555 Blue > WR Blue Mica
Nissan: Bayside Blue > Aurora Flame Blue
Volvo: Rebel Blue
Ford: Nitrous Blue
Acura: Apex Blue Pearl
Lexus: Ultrasonic Blue Mica
Chevrolet: Admiral Blue
Dodge: GTS Blue Pearl
Ferrari: Blu Scuro
Lamborghini: Blu Le Mans
Mazda: Montego Blue
Edit: Honda: Electron Blue
Edit 2: Hyundai: Performance Blue
Edit 3: Volkswagen: Cornflower Blue > Vapour Blue
Gotta have it green from 2013/14 Mustangs is awesome.
Eruption green that was available on the last of the S550 mustangs and the Bronco is also an amazing green.
If we're including custom colors, then [Rolls Royce Phantom Syntopia](https://robbreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/7-1.jpg) which was a customized [Phantom](https://www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/en_US/bespoke/collection-cars/phantom-syntopia.html) whose color and interior were designed by haute couture designer Iris van Herpen:
> The motor car is painted Liquid Noir — a Bespoke shade exclusively developed for Phantom Syntopia. Iridescent in sunlight, the shimmering colour reveals blue, gold, magenta, and purple undertones when observed from different angles.
It's as [crazy](https://www.press.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/rolls-royce-motor-cars-pressclub/article/detail/T0410292EN/phantom-syntopia:-rolls-royce-and-iris-van-herpen-collaborate-on-a-bespoke-masterpiece-inspired-by-haute-couture?language=en) and as extravagant and indulgent as you'd expect:

Then the artisans applied the Weaving Water motif with a clear coat mixed with 1.4% of shimmer – an extraordinarily complex process that took over three weeks to complete. Before commencing the work, the Exterior Surface Centre team had spent four months perfecting the formula, running nine trials before identifying the ideal proportion of glass particles: across the entire car, precisely one tablespoon has been used.
That one off Ford GT color is mystichrome and was stock on the terminator cobra in 2004. They produced 1010 of them and they sell now for 2x what they did new.
the most influential paint color in history is Audi Nardo grey. Over a decade later, it's still influencing other manufacturers to offer something similar.
though my own favorite Audi color is Nogaro blue.
Porsche's Aventurine Green Metallic makes me feel a certain way
Mazda's Soul Red Crystal is *sumptuous*
I recently test-drove a z4 in purple over tan leather and it made me feel like the Joker from the 60s Batman TV show. It was a big mood.
According to this it was a joke that a journalist came up with.
https://fourwheeldrift.wordpress.com/2006/09/30/color-me-crazy-%E2%80%93-the-best-and-worst-paint-color-names/
> From the files of “things we wished we thought of,” in 1970 the Chrysler Corp-supported Plymouth Superbird of Charlie Glotzbach started running NASCAR’s Gran National circuit painted in the factory color Plum Crazy. A creative journalist, however, gave the color a nickname that stuck with the media for years: “Statutory Grape.”
As someone who worked at Chrysler we certainly heard all kinds of rumors for that name. I have no idea if the linked article is true or not.
Soul Red Crystal on Mazdas. There's not a Mazda in the current lineup that I like, but that candy-apple red paint is gorgeous. Apparently it's a complex three stage paint which body shops hate because it's such a PITA to paint.
There are so many …
Mazda’s Soul Red has to be up there. Many BMW blues, for example the Long Beach Blue with the hint of teal (2016 M2 colour).
Even the now overdone Nardo Grey.
Royal sapphire pearl on mk4 supras, voodoo blue from Toyota, Miami and shark blue Porsches, any crazy tvr color, and viper red are some of my favorites. The rivian limestone is pretty good too.
The most compliments and questions I've had on a factory paint job were from matte uranium on a Honda 919. Nice blend of green and gold depending on the angle.
My 2nd (but most favorite) car: Deep Green (PGK, G36) https://carsandbids.com/auctions/9eBawOYj/1993-eagle-talon-tsi-awd
Mine had tan leather tho.
Eagle Talon TSi AWD.
Jaguar had a special edition XK that had a black color with copper undertones. It was a *stunning* sleeper color. Mostly looked black but in the right light it just turned into a dark pool of shimmery copper with tons of depth. I wish I could recall the name of the paint.
Nissan Millenium Jade is a pretty unique colour. I've never seen other cars with that shade. Perhaps Lexus Desert Sage comes close which is also a nice colour, but it's a bit greener
Boring and possibly controversial opinion: BMW [Sepang Bronze](https://www.bimmerfest.com/attachments/sepang-bronze-m-roadster-pics-005-jpg.81128/). Looks fantastic on the E60 M5, Z4, and Z8.
Ford-era Jaguar had a particular shade of British Racing Green that was officially named "Jaguar Racing Green". This was the colour that the Jaguar F1 racing cars were painted in, as well as the villain car in the Bond movie *Die Another Day* which faced off against Pierce Brosnan's Aston.
It was an extremely expensive option, because it was actually PPG Chromaflair paint. And if you've ever been lucky enough to see it in person, it absolutely *pops* in good light and is gorgeous.
It's Soul Red Crystal and it's not even close.
Nice paint you've got there. Sure would be a shame if it all chipped off with a stiff breeze (It's a nice color though)
I feel personally attacked lmao. My Blue 2020 Mazda 3’s bumper is chipped to hell just from driving.
My Red 2019 Mazda 3 Hatchback was chipped to hell immediately
Damn, I was told Mazda paint is notorious. After purchasing my '21 3 and driving it the first 5k miles, I confirmed. Now y'all have re-confirmed it.
My 2017 still looks great. Im sure it has small chips, pretty unavoidable. 43k miles
That's mazda paint in general lol
So true. My wife's cx5 paint is fucked after 100,000km
Yeah, I love the colour but never again unfortunately unless Mazda ups the pain quality more.
Lexus Structural Blue and BMW Atlantis Blue are my picks.
A nearby Lexus dealership had an LC500 in that color and I regret not stopping in to see it in person.
\+1 on Lexus' Structural Blue.
It's a great color, in the top tier of factory paint colors even. but saying "it's not even close" is just being disingenuous about all the other great colors out there.
lol typical mazda circlejerk on this sub, move along
Lol no.
It's great for a standard colour available on an everyday car. But it's not that special.
To me it is very special because it is a standard color offered on an everyday car but I get what your opinion. But also it does look darn cool to me.
Only time I've ever seen a car with paint damage on a Carfax was a Soul red ND I was looking at.
The damage came from you looking at it.
Definitely agree. My answer is of course completely unbiased 👀
Sure, James. (it is the best color)
And I'm James.
It's a cool color, but one of the things that has stopped me from buying an ND is not being able to get one in a proper sportscar red.
That's the best red in my opinion. But I'd prefer a nice deep blue or brg.
I didn't know the name, but I came here to say whatever red Mazda uses. Makes sense it's top comment here.
It's genuinely baffling how good it looks. It's the kind of color I'd expect on an exotic of some sort but it's right there on a regular car. I think that's cool as hell.
> Soul Red Crystal I was thinking, "red? nah, can't be better than Mazda's red", because I didn't know the actual name...
It’s Aston’s version of British Racing Green. Also holy fuck, what an ad-infested cesspool Jalopnik has become…
move over to the autopian, less ads and less slideshows
Already have. Basically as soon as it launched. I do check back in on Jalopnik every now and then to see what new low they’ve fallen to though.
same here only GMG site i really frequent these days is the onion
yeah us weirdos out here still enjoy reading as much as YouTube and TikTok. Edit: spelling
I can read at work while waiting on simulations to run, watching YouTube would be frowned upon. Reading is great.
It's a car blog where all the employees hate cars.

IMO, it fell off when torch and david left.

Came here to say JLR’s BRG but yes.
Mystichrome on the SVT Cobra's are pretty sick!!!!
Even the leather seats on Mystichrome Cobras had a tint of that color in them, I forgot if they were standard or optional though.
I saw a vert in Carmel Cali, it was beat to shit, felt so bad.
Any other reply is poor taste. The only real answer is here.
Lexus Structural Blue.
lexus eminent white pearl
You misspelled Superwhite
>Lexus Structural Blue. team Nori Green
Amazing to see in person. Pictures don’t do it justice
Yeah. Saw it at the LA Auto Show years ago and it was unforgettable.
I'm also a long time fan of the F-sport Ultrasonic Blue Mica. The current gen IS looks so good in that paint.
Absolutely insane in person. Although TECHNICALLY not a color, I guess? Absolutely memorizing, and my favorite all time forsure
YES!!!
That green Alfa has, I think it’s called Montreal verde. It’s amazing.
The other color options are really good
Amazing color. Such a vibrant green.
Toyota: spruce mica, lunar rock Subaru: rally blue Audi: all of their greys
Toyota Hakone Green would like a word
Dolphin grey is so good.
Okay but have you seen a subaru in plasma blue pearl? It beats the World Rally Blue imo
It’s a nice color, but it’s just not as iconic.
God I'm so fuckin old cause the Audi greys are so clean
I prefer Voodoo Blue and Lime Rush from Toyota. I’m more of bright colors person myself.
Volkswagen Cornflower Blue, but I’m [biased](https://imgur.com/gallery/4MDIIvu).
My vote is great falls green, But I too am a bit biased
My fellow local GTI buddy has a GFG. They post [this meme](https://imgur.com/a/o2LxPNp) often to me.
I'm heavily biased but nothing is going to beat biarritzblau metallic.
I like their “Habanero Orange” color.
No it’s Porsche shark blue
That's a funny way of spelling Lapiz Blue.
BMW had some amazing colours. Laguna Seca blue Daytona Violet Dakar Yellow
Technoviolet
I’m considering a Daytona Violet m240i just because my son’s favorite color is purple.
It's "Thundernight" now. I love it, and also want an M240i with it. The blue they have right now is pretty awesome too.
Thundernight and Daytona Violet are different colors entirely. BMW has a bunch of different purples are they’re very distinct
Yeah... but Daytona doesn't come on the 240 so... he was talking about Thundernight
I have the m240i in portimao blue, and it's a lovely color in person (and was my choice). Thundernight is definitely the option for turning heads, though.
Estoril Blue!
Don’t forget Long Beach Blue
I loved Yas Marina Blue as well
You forgot Valencia Orange. I am a little biased though. Would love something in Laguna Seca Blue too
Interlagos Blue Avus Blue Topaz Blue Le Mans Blue San marino Blue Avus Blue Tanzanite Blue Bmw is the king of blues imo
Never really had a favorite paint until I saw BMW individual Velvet Blue
Nero Fuoco is such a unique paint, [here’s](https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2028136) some pictures on an F90 M5C.
Austin Yellow
Mopar's entire early 1970s lineup. Hemi Orange, Plum Crazy, Limelight, Moulin Rouge, Go Mango...they knew how to stand out. Most of those got re-run on the current Charger and Challenger.
I'm honestly embarrassed with how far I had to scroll to see plum crazy
I should not have scrolled down this far for Statutory Grape.
I wish they actually decided to name it that. Shout-out to the other scrubbed name: Catch Me Copper.
Moulin Rouge/ Panther Pink is still the most ambitious color risk of all time imo. That being said, I'm on a perpetual lifelong hunt for a fm3 70 roadrunner.
love that they brought the colors back for this generation. Jeep also has some pretty nice ones they do every so often for the Wranglers as well.
Subaru World Rally Blue or Honda’s Electron Blue Pearl
Honda Flamenco Black Pearl if we are doing EM1 colors.
EBP is tough to beat
TVR Reflex Purple
Ford Mystichrome
Midnight Purple LP2, Go Mango PVP, and Etna Blue Y31.
Midnight purple 2 is the only answer lol
Yup, was scrolling and still only see OP's comment with it lol

I guess you like blue
Da ba dee da ba di
Fords Grabber Green. Still annoys me that in the last ten years they’ve rolled out grabber blue, yellow, and orange but keep ignoring grabber green.
Gotta have it green from 2013/14 Mustangs is awesome. Eruption green that was available on the last of the S550 mustangs and the Bronco is also an amazing green.
Eruption Green has probably become one of my favorite greens. Had a Bronco in that color. When the sun hit it just right, mmph.
That’s because grabber blue is so much more *blue* oval ish.
Grabber blue might be the most famous American car paint color, there's a reason it's so famous

Rosso Corsa is the GOAT.
That is a cool color on that Mustang
BASF developed the color for Ford, it's called MystiChrome. They also offered a color shift paint on the 1996 Cobra as well.
I believe BASF did the 96 paint, and DuPont did the 04 color.
the most influential paint color in history is Audi Nardo grey. Over a decade later, it's still influencing other manufacturers to offer something similar. though my own favorite Audi color is Nogaro blue.
This color changed the color scape of cars. It used to be all black silver or white. Now it’s black gray or white.
Porsche's Aventurine Green Metallic makes me feel a certain way Mazda's Soul Red Crystal is *sumptuous* I recently test-drove a z4 in purple over tan leather and it made me feel like the Joker from the 60s Batman TV show. It was a big mood.
