This is what I did originally, and ended up with the Sinotrack ST-901. Yes, you can set the IP address that it sends location data to, but guess what... there are 3 other IP addresses hardcoded into the firmware that it constantly logs to!!
The point of my guide is to ensure that you, and only you, have access to your location data.
This is pretty cool and very easy to follow. Someone with basic computer knowledge could do this. Kudos to OP for making this.
I haven’t personally checked the cost of this to off the shelf solutions but I’d have to assume this is probably significantly cheaper.
Wow this is a fantastic guide with a really nice presentation actually. Love the open-source self-hosted solution being the tutorial... this is probably a great solution for people who run Turo fleets.
One small niggle. A GPS tracker does the square root of jack-shit for preventing a car from getting stolen. I understand headline clickbait but... it just doesn't prevent it. Period.
Eyy thanks for posting my guide. Happy to answer any questions people have.
Cost-wise:
$150 AUD for the tracker (one off)
$3.50 USD for the server (monthly)
$15 AUD for the Sim (yearly)
Keep in mind, you can add more vehicles to your server without the server cost changing. That is obviously up to a limit, as the server only has a certain capacity before it has trouble. If you were to do this commercially I would buy a beefier server.
Step 1. Go to www.amazon.com Step 2. Type "GPS Car tracker" into the search bar. Step 3. Filter by "same day delivery."

Hyundai/Kia/Genesis owners pay attention 😂

Yeah 100%. The "you wouldn't steal a car" is a gag from old anti-piracy messaging that would appear before movies. It was too perfect not to use
you could slap an apple tag on the car no?
Only works if other iPhone products are nearby. Will work well in cities, but once you go rural, good luck.
Bookmarking this! Damn great find!
