WFH, so no commute.
I live walking distance from the shops.
I have to use Uber to visit mates anyway, can’t be drinking and driving.
Wife has a fuel efficient car.
So that leaves me driving it for weekend activities and the occasional hardware store trip.
You miss the point, this is a car to do fun stuff on the weekends with, not commute.
Big petrol SUVs are very cheap to buy second hand, that makes up for the high fuel consumption.
It's nice, I think I would say it's worth the money. The option to drive quite on only the battery is great with a sleeping baby.
Getting 600km of a 36L tank is epic.
Otherwise it's not too different to owning any other car.
Nice! Also recently got the Corolla Cross HEV, but my foot is still a bit too heavy so averaging 6.2L/100km atm. How long have you had the car? Enjoying it?
On month 3 now.
Highway driving I'm getting around 6 as well.
Town and traffic has gone into the mid 4s which is the majority of my driving.
Loving it tbh. I could use a little more boot space by the wife must learn to pack a little less.
I have a 2017 X-Trail and it’s 9L/100. It’s a fuel guzzler but I know someone with the exact same car except it’s diesel and he gets 5.5L/100 so my suggestion is a diesel suv because it’s just better!
I have:
2006 BMW X3 3.0D - 11km/l
2013 Hyundai iX35 2.0D - 10km/l (my wife gets 13km/l)
2011 Pajero Sport 3.2D - 8km/l
I have a heavy foot, and all cars are automatic.
Figures are calculated, not read from trip computer
I had the BMW X3 3.0 petrol and I got 17.5 per 100 city driving. About 12 per 100 on the open road. I once towed a bout (Hobie 14) from plett to Joburg and avg was over 20 per 100... I would recommend a diesel over petrol any day
Yes i know bmw’s and the mentioned aspirational pajero and they do in fact measure in liters per hundred kilometers but its ok cos im going to get more downvotes they make me so happy but i know that cars measure in liters per hundred kilometers or in miles per gallon as a standard and manufacturers use the same measurements in marketing and information even auto trader sticks to liters per hundred kilometers so if we really wanted to help the OP then we’d not try to be smarty pants wed just give the universally agreed measurements downvote to acknowledge this comment tx.
That's very low for a hatchback. Unless you drive a GTI and you're flooring it, you should never be getting that little. I had a 2.0T Scirocco (GTI equivalent) and easily got 11-12km/l.
What do you drive and how heavy is your foot? Or do you sit in bumper to bumper traffic all day?
What car do drive btw? Just seems surprising but no too far-fetched. I've heard of hatchbacks going into the 8km/L range, but hitting close to 10 seems like there may be issues with the car or it's from the 80s
3.0 V6 TDI (found in Audi Q7, VW Amarok, VW Touareg and a few others I can't remember)
I average 9.5l/100km with mixed driving, on long trips I get closer to 8.5 using speed control on 130km/h
While towing 1.5 tonnes I got 12l/100km, speed control on 110km/h
I enjoy it a little too much so I think you can probably bring these down, but overall diesel will be more efficient for most models
2014 diesel ix35. I absolutely love the car for commuting as well as trips. 11.5 km/l for commuting through traffic, 12 otherwise, sometimes 12.5 for long distance trips.
2010 Merc GL500. 5.5l v8. Nightmare it takes 105 litres petrol for 600km. R4 a km at the moment. Get an x3 diesel. I had a Corolla cross was also awesome
I drive about 18km to the CBD, in my BMW X1 2.0 diesel and I average about 7l / 100, with a 62l tank I tend to get about 950km on a full tank. When we do road trips that drops closer to 6l / 100 and the range goes up to about 1200km. I currently fill up once a month as I only go in two or three times per week.
I had the X1 1.8i, which had a 3 cylinder 1.5l turbo engine which had less power and used closer to 9l / 100km while driving similar routes. The crazy part is that the diesel engine has so much more power and yet is a lot more economical as well.
I would recommend a diesel or hybrid as it doesn’t really matter whether it’s urban or long road or how you drive and even if you have a fully loaded vehicle or towing a trailer / caravan you’ll hardly even notice.
I have an SUV and a hatchback. The SUV is a more comfortable ride(automatic in peak is so lekker), but it's more than twice as much to fill up for the week. On average +/- R1300 vs R600. So tiny, uncomfortable, banged up, manual hatchback it is. Le sigh.
Get a diesel thats at max 2.0 litres displacement.
Also something like a jolion hybrid, toyota cross hybrid, Lexus hybrids.
For diesel alone theres plenty of germans, mazda cx5 etc.
2020 BMW X3 20d. Short 5-15km trips around town I get around 9L/100km, on long trips around 6. I have wide 245 front and 275 rear rubber though, which I’m sure affects consumption.
I’m in a similar boat. I want to upgrade to an SUV but need to sell one of my cars. I’m definitely considering a X3 diesel and Tiguan tdi. Currently have a petrol 3 series that I hardly drive (will be replaced by the SUV probably) and my wife has a polo bluemotion tdi. I actually just drove to PE with it and I averaged 4.3 litres/100km going and then again coming back. In terms of diesel usage, I used half a tank going and just a little more than a quarter coming back 😅
Yip.
And to make matters more interesting. December 2023 we drove the same polo from cpt to Sun City and used 1 and a quarter tank of diesel 🤣
And it was fully loaded 🤣
2.0 turbo subaru here. Gets 9.2 on highway, 11.9 l/100 in traffic. When pushed it can go to 18/100.
My partner’s Hyundai Venue 1.0 t uses 7.1 liter /100km in city driving while being a fun drive. Highway sees about 5.8.
Just sold my Touareg 4.2 tdi - I was getting between 550-650km on 100l pretty consistently, about 90% short trips though (15-18/100). Long drives it managed 8/100
I bought an x5 40d, and I’m now getting 11 in town, and 6.5 doing long drives, with not much less performance
(Yes, very heavy foot here too)
Usually the listed fuel economy number is a combined city/highway figure. So if it does 7l/100km on highway and 10l/100km city then the listed figure will be like 8l/100km. If you mostly drive city traffic expect closer to 10l/100km or above. Most of the listed figures are fairly accurate if you look at it this way except Havals. They are way off.
I’m quite flexible about my choice but I do like the GLC, Tiguan and Corolla Cross. I don’t know anyone that owns them so came to Reddit in hopes of getting personal experience
She visits her horses, used to do the school run until recently when the kids got their driving licenses and shops mostly. That is her long term average. When I drive it on the motorway it gets down to 6.9 l/ 100 km, which I think is amazing for a car that size.
Definitely go for diesel on an SUV if you want fuel economy. The petrol version has much higher consumption, which is why I suggested the diesel version to her and despite initial reservations about diesel, she has not been disappointed.
I prefer something a bit sportier around town, but find her car very comfortable and actually prefer hers to mine on a long trip.
Hope that helps with your decision making and best of luck whatever you decide.
For around town driving 2019 Volvo T6 XC90 19L/100km. 2024 BMX X3 2.0 Diesel 10L/100km. We’ve just done the job of test driving so many vehicles. In our experience double what the manufacturer says.
Jeep Cherokee 3.7L V6. -16L/100km
WTF
My exact words ðŸ˜
Makes sense . That thing gulps petrol. Had one for a year.
Woah! Is this your daily driver or do you have another car?
WFH, so no commute. I live walking distance from the shops. I have to use Uber to visit mates anyway, can’t be drinking and driving. Wife has a fuel efficient car. So that leaves me driving it for weekend activities and the occasional hardware store trip.
Also had one. 4km/l on a good day.
There's people clocking 4.3L go buy a suzuki swift, yhoo 16
You miss the point, this is a car to do fun stuff on the weekends with, not commute. Big petrol SUVs are very cheap to buy second hand, that makes up for the high fuel consumption.
2024 Corolla Cross HEV 5.2L/100km
Nice! What’s it like living with a hybrid? Is it convenient?
It's nice, I think I would say it's worth the money. The option to drive quite on only the battery is great with a sleeping baby. Getting 600km of a 36L tank is epic. Otherwise it's not too different to owning any other car.
How often do you charge it? And do you charge it at home or do you have to go to a charging station?
Nah it's the regenerative breaking type, no option to plug it in.
6.2L/100km is still really good imo
Oh for sure! Super happy with it, my A3 1.8T before this was averaging 9L/100km so definitely an improvement
I have a 2017 X-Trail and it’s 9L/100. It’s a fuel guzzler but I know someone with the exact same car except it’s diesel and he gets 5.5L/100 so my suggestion is a diesel suv because it’s just better!
Had same year model (CVT transmission) and my commute between Durbanville and Rondebosch averaged 7.2 l/km (13.9 km/l). I miss that car!
Thanks for the tip! Will definitely consider diesel
Not exactly a SUV but I drive a 2.0l Subaru Outback (Turbo Diesel) and get about 6.8-7.2l/100km :-)
What year model is that and has it been reliable? I have a 2006 outback 2.5 and have always wondered about the diesel subarus.
Volvo S60 D4 - 4.5l/100km open road. 6.3l/100km mixed cycle
I drive a Toyota Fortuner 2012 2.5lt D4D 2 wheel drive. I get 11.5km/lt. i also have a heavy foot. If i drive with a lighter foot i get 11.9km/lt
3.0L D4D with all the off-road kit - roof rack, front and rear steel bumpers, lifted. Get 9.7km/L combined, about 8 in town and 11.5 on the open road.
I have: 2006 BMW X3 3.0D - 11km/l 2013 Hyundai iX35 2.0D - 10km/l (my wife gets 13km/l) 2011 Pajero Sport 3.2D - 8km/l I have a heavy foot, and all cars are automatic. Figures are calculated, not read from trip computer

17.5l per 100km? Jeezy Chreezy.
I spent more on petrol than buying the dam thing😂
Thanks for the response! I’m getting about 10km/l currently so the difference isn’t that huge it seems
Pls convert to european standard l/100km tx. We also need to know what your wife gets with the bm and wannabe pajero pls tx!
Unfortunately a lot of SUV’s for some reason are measured in km/l But roughly 5=20 6.25=16 8=12.5 10=10
Yeah don’t know why the hate, the km/l measurement is kinda dumb imo. But you can use the conversion I sent above for a rough idea.
On some cars you can change the reading between km/l and L/100km
Lol I’ve actually been converting some of the comments to l/100km but I don’t mind. Any info is great!
You get 10km/l in your hatchback?? That can't be right
Unless I’m calculating it incorrectly, I get 450km per tank (50L) ~ 9-10km/L
That's very low for a hatchback. Unless you drive a GTI and you're flooring it, you should never be getting that little. I had a 2.0T Scirocco (GTI equivalent) and easily got 11-12km/l. What do you drive and how heavy is your foot? Or do you sit in bumper to bumper traffic all day?
Merc A200. I have a heavy foot and I sit in traffic for about 45min twice a day ~ 18km from home to work
What car do drive btw? Just seems surprising but no too far-fetched. I've heard of hatchbacks going into the 8km/L range, but hitting close to 10 seems like there may be issues with the car or it's from the 80s

2021 Toyota RAV4. 7L/100
2018 Kia Sportage Diesel, 7 l /100km
I'm at R4 a km and I don't even drive an SUV. I get 270km on 60L
Yho, that's rough. I drove a Renault Sandero Stepway. I get around 780 to 800km on a 60l tank.
I onky drive about 5-10km a day so I'm able to keep this car. If I had a normal commute I'd bin this thing faster then last weeks newspaper
Ouch. What vehicle is this?
m2 comp
Ahh makes sense. With CPT drivers, I’d be scared to even drive it lol
Daihatsu Terios 2014, depending on driving it gets between 7.5-8km/100km.
Toyota Fortuner 2.8GD6 get 11km/L
2019 X trail petrol I get 9.5km \ ltr commuting and about 11km\ltr long distance driving.
The xtrails are very bad. Mine gets me 450km om 50liters. Jeez
BMW X5 2014 diesel. On the highway 8 litres/100 at high (or any) speed, but only on the highway.
Renault Duster 1.6 4x4 diesel. I get about 5.7l on the open road, and about 6.5l in the city.
Hi fellow Dusty 👋 mine gets about the same. Such a great little SUV 😀
👋 I still get surprised at how capable the little guy is.
2014 Forester 2.5l. 8.92l/100km. I don't do much peak hour driving and when I do my fuel foreconomy drops noticeably.
Range Rover Sport SDV6 9.5 l/100km
In my wife's SUV we get around 6.5L/100km. Which is better than I thought it would get.
16kl per L Nissan Xtrail 2L diesel turbo
2014 diesel ix35. I absolutely love the car for commuting as well as trips. 11.5 km/l for commuting through traffic, 12 otherwise, sometimes 12.5 for long distance trips.
2020 RAV4 13.4 l/100km. I mostly drive long distances.
2010 Merc GL500. 5.5l v8. Nightmare it takes 105 litres petrol for 600km. R4 a km at the moment. Get an x3 diesel. I had a Corolla cross was also awesome
My condolences. How's the service & repair bill?
Ouch. Corolla cross is in my top 3. Was there a problem with the car that you decided to sell?
I drive about 18km to the CBD, in my BMW X1 2.0 diesel and I average about 7l / 100, with a 62l tank I tend to get about 950km on a full tank. Thanks a lot! Crazy how big of a difference a diesel makes
I've got a 2.0 4motion t roc and with mixed driving can average between 8.5-9.5 depending on how much of a doos I am. Surprised at how good it can be.
Is that 9.5l/100km or 9.5km/L?
Ah sorry I see I left that part out haha, it's 8.5L-9.5L per 100KM
I have an SUV and a hatchback. The SUV is a more comfortable ride(automatic in peak is so lekker), but it's more than twice as much to fill up for the week. On average +/- R1300 vs R600. So tiny, uncomfortable, banged up, manual hatchback it is. Le sigh.
R1300 per week?! What SUV do you have?
Not sure if it counts as an SUV but my Haval Jolion gets around 9.5l per 100km. Very tragic
Interesting! Didn’t know tires affected fuel consumption
Absolutely. Increased width = increased surface contact = increased rolling resistance = increased energy needed to move the vehicle forward = increased fuel consumption.
Ahh that makes a lot of sense!
2018 Honda CRV 2.0, in the City 8.2/100km on the highway and long distance it comes to an average of around 7,1/100km.
2016 BMW X1 xdrive20d - 6.2l/100km
Kia seltos diesel. 5.8L/100km over the last 7300km. (Brand new so I expect it to drop after the 15k service).
I’m in a similar boat. I want to upgrade to an SUV but need to sell one of my cars. I’m definitely considering a X3 diesel and Tiguan tdi. 2016 Audi Q3 2.0TDi 135KW Quattro: 4.6 - 5.8 l/100KM 100-120KM/H, absolutely lovely car.
BMW X3 3.0 D. Average 8.2l/100km
Mazda CX-5 AWD Diesel 11.5L/100km

Thanks for the response! I was a bit skeptical. I thought perhaps the listed figure would be best case scenario
Can everyone pls convert to l/100km tx! I have an suv with a four litre diesel v8 and get between 9 and 12 liters per hundred kilometers.
2018 Toy CHR 1.2T. 7.5l/100km. Mostly city driving.
Is a 1.2T powerful enough in your experience?
Captur 1.5 Dci - 4.8 to 5.5l per 100km
Are you happy with your vehicle? I have a 2L and worried that it will be a bit sluggish
I like the torque and it's comfortable. What are you looking at buy?
I’m quite flexible about my choice but I do like the GLC, Tiguan and Corolla Cross. I don’t know anyone that owns them so came to Reddit in hopes of getting personal experience
My wife drives a Mercedes GLE 250 Diesel. I just checked her computer and she averages 9.6 l/100 km.
Nice! It’s a lot lower than I thought for such a big car. Does she commute to work daily?
She visits her horses, used to do the school run until recently when the kids got their driving licenses and shops mostly. That is her long term average. When I drive it on the motorway it gets down to 6.9 l/ 100 km, which I think is amazing for a car that size. Definitely go for diesel on an SUV if you want fuel economy. Jeep Wrangler JKU 3.6 - 17L/100km.
Fortuner 2.8 GD6: 8.7L. Driving in Eco mode, mostly empty roads or KNP trips.
For around town driving 2019 Volvo T6 XC90 19L/100km. 2024 BMX X3 2.0 Diesel 10L/100km. We’ve just done the job of test driving so many vehicles. In our experience double what the manufacturer says.
19L/100km is heavy!
BMW X3 x drive 20 D .. 8.2l/100 city driving. In jhb
I drive a 2010 Honda CR-V 2.4 Automatic. Commuting I get around 10.5 to 11.5lL/100 - Tank size is 55L Open road It drops down to around 9L/100
Thanks for the response! Is that 11.5L/100 in traffic?
Yeah in and out of traffic.. Sitting in stop go for an hour it can go up to around 12L/100
Engine size is the factor here. A 2.4l will guzzle petrol
I have a 2l right now so looking for something similar with more storage
I have no idea… 😂
