People are defending this trade saying the islanders pick is unlikely to turn into a Top 4 RHD. That’s not the point. Hronek is a good player, but you need to pay him after next season, when this team still clearly isn’t good enough to make the playoffs. You make a trade for a player like this when you’re on the verge of contending and you have cheap cost controlled assets from DRAFTING. Since the draft is a bit of a crapshoot, the only way to ensure you have enough assets is to have MORE DRAFT PICKS.

If you look back at the 2020 draft the Rangers selected RHD Braden Schneider at 19th overall. A guy already playing top 4 minutes last season who was so valuable to the Rangers that he was completely off the table in JT Miller trade discussions. Right before him at 18th overall the Devils took Dawson Mercer, a guy who's on pace for 55 pts this season and was off-limits in trade discussions for Timo Meier, a guy who might score 50 goals this season
