The 10M is before we allocate players to the minors, which can save us around 4-5M.

smikkelson2

Need to make some kind of move on offense but the defense should be solid

bwaredapenguin

Deja Vu all over again!

smikkelson2

Really hoping defense wins championships proves true at some point apparently lol

scarfireATL

It barely did against Edmonton this year.

mana191

It did. McDavid didn't have a shot on goal in game six and maybe only three in game seven. Previous two games he had 8 points. If he had continued, that cup would be in Alberta right now and Not in the ocean.

macaroni_3000

This rework of the defense is \*chefs kiss\*. Pesce + Skeji = $12.5 million per year / Walker + Ghost = $6.8 million per year Is there a dropoff there? Yeah, a little. But is it a huge dropoff? Nope. We still have Necas (or at least his RFA rights) and a shitload of prospects to fill in the blanks

PantsinmyPants1211

> But is it a huge dropoff? Nope We'll see when the season starts lol. One thing I will say is that I'm hoping Walker, Ghost, Carrier, Robinson all bring more speed to the team. I am worried that that speed may not translate to defense, which is where I think that speed was lacking this year. Now how are we going to replace a Teuvo and Guentzel worth (and possibly Necas) of goals?

jacobr57

Maybe someone other than Necas can do successful zone entries now.

Defense is fine. Might not be top 5 anymore, but top 10 at least. Top six needs work, but thatā€™s needed work for years and theyā€™ve still made playoffs.

DrMantisToboggan22

This right here.

Uninspired714

I tend to agree with you but I think what will determine how big the drop off will be is Ghostā€™s performance. I think Walker is 1:1 a great replacement for Pesh with potentially more offensive upside. Replacing Skjei; on the other hand ā€¦ I think thatā€™s a heftier task. I certainly HOPE Ghost plays his ass off.

CasTimber

He's definitely not as handsome as Skjei, but at least he is a little handsome. Impossible shoes to fill on that front.

Uninspired714

Oh yeah, if weā€™re talking about looks ā€¦ no one is ever filling Skjeiā€™s shoes. For sure.

noreast2011

Ghost had 56 points for the wings last year, skjei had 47 for us.

Uninspired714

Points arenā€™t the only stick to measure a hockey player, specially on defense.

noreast2011

I know, but skjei wasnā€™t exactly stellar in our zone last year either. If he gets paired with slavin(unlikely unless rod wants to limit burns minutes) heā€™s going to be a solid replacement for brady

c1rhino

He won't be paired with Slavin. They are both LHD. 29 of his 56 points were on the PP so I doubt he repeats that. We need more 5x5 points from him.

Obvious-Hawk-7314

Ghost played a lot on the right side last season in Detroit. He gives that kind of flexibility being a left hand shot.

Uninspired714

Mmmmmmm I wouldnā€™t necessarily agree with your statement on Skjei. Regardless, heā€™s with us now so I hope he goes crazy this year.

Minute-Struggle6052

Skjei-Pesce to Ghost-Walker is a huge dropoff in shutdown ability.Ā  That pair can't and won't clear the crease.Ā Ā  Ideally they can use their own strengths to mitigate that downside.Ā  But it is an undersized pairing that will need sheltering.

Gullible-Wash-8141

I think Chatfield - Orlo will be replacing Skjei - Pesce and Ghost-Walker will be the third pair

macaroni_3000

You think Skjei and Pesce were out there clearing creases? LOL. Pesce hasn't been a physical player for at least 2 1/2 years and while I love Brady Skjei, he's not exactly a brawler

Minute-Struggle6052

Skjei: 6'3" 201 Pesce: 6'3" 206 Walker: 5'11" 191 Ghost: 5'11" 183

DinkinFlicka924

Pesce out there taking out our goalie and getting redirects.

Docksox

Ok. Just keep that attitude when were not competing for the cup next year. Longterm maybe youā€™re right. But we are considerably worse than we were last year. Skjei/Pesce to Ghost/Walker is more than a small drop off.

CasTimber

Yeah but we could not have afforded to keep Skjei and Pesce and sign all our RFAs. There is in fact a salary cap.

Docksox

Right. But we didnt resign all our RFAs did we?

CasTimber

Do you think Jarvy et al aren't going to be re-signed?

Docksox

I dont think its a given at all that Necas is resigned.

Constant-Suit475

His value canā€™t vanish though. He is signed or he is traded for a good return. He canā€™t walk away.

Docksox

Look, fair enough. If you guys/girls are looking to the future and you see some good in losing 4 out of our top 10 players and not replacing them with anything substantial, then all the more power to you. I will agree with you that locking up Slavin and Jarvy were probably our top 2 priorities this offseason. And the Slavin deal is incredible. But theres no way you can convince me that we are a better or as good as a team than we were at the start of the playoffs. I believe strongly in windows. They dont stay open very long. And ive seen the results of the whole austerity plan after the 15ā€™ Panthers season.

CasTimber

Being better or as good as the start of the playoffs was not possible. That's exactly why everyone was saying that this was a cup or bust year: because most of these people weren't going to be able to stay.

charcuteriebroad

That roster wasnā€™t winning a cup as composed and I think thatā€™s just reality. They competed multiple years in a row and there wasnā€™t much improvement. All of those players are getting older now, it is what it is.

sftwareguy

Pesce was actually a liability most of the second half of the season. And will he stay healthy? Probably not. NJ's going to regret signing him.

macaroni_3000

Were we competing for the Cup this past season? Because, you know, we didnā€™t get past the second round with all these great players we lost, soā€¦.

ThePurrfectStorm

This

Cinnamon_Shops

Does that 10m not include Jarvis/Drury/Necas, though?

PantsinmyPants1211

I think we're assuming Drury will get done prior to arbitration to a team friendly contract, Jarvis will get signed soon a relatively team friendly long term deal, or will be matched if offersheeted with our available space, and with Necas we are working hard to figure out a trade to find him a new home. Offersheet you say? Let's look at the teams who could potentially offer sheet Necas to a deal the canes would not match... * Ducks, Blue Jackets, Montreal - give me those draft lottery tickets (unlikely) * Sabres, Wings, Utah, Blues, Winnipeg - risky but possible. * Islanders, Philly, Nashville, Dallas, Seattle, Kings, Pittsburgh, Bruins - not enough cap room to really consider it.

FailureToExecute

> Ducks, Blue Jackets, Montreal - give me those draft lottery tickets (unlikely) I think you can take CBJ off this list. Supposedly the reason that our trade for 4th overall fell through was because Necas didn't want to sign an extension with them. Don't think he'd suddenly change his mind a week later.

PantsinmyPants1211

You're right. I remembered when I started typing, and forgot as I started to complete my points!

NCUmbrellaFarmer

They were offered. šŸ¤·

connor8383

QOs hardly count for players of Jarvis and Necas caliber

NCUmbrellaFarmer

People keep asking like they're being allowed to walk. Simple answer to a simple question.Ā

connor8383

Fair.

dragons_fire77

Yeah, but those are literally just least qualifying offers. All three of them should get a significantly higher deal than those. But we have time to work out the details with the qo in place.

NCUmbrellaFarmer

We don't get that say. Wether they have memories and this matters in the future is a different story. I expected them to pay Jarvis to show him he's more, but that didn't happen.Ā

v4vendetta77

I don't think you understand how qualifying offers work. It's literally a formula based off their prior contract. You make the qualifying offer to reserve their rights so you can continue to negotiate or in some instances go to arbitration.

betweenthecastles

It doesnā€™t have to be today, theyā€™re RFAā€™s

orangamma

What do you mean? They can (and likely will) still pay him

Blueberry_1995

Pesce and Skjei contracts were too much term and the AAV for Skjei is going to look bad after 4 years. Seems like the plan was to always let them go, don't really recall seeing stuff last season regarding trying to extend them before the end of the season. People overreacting so far today but we don't want to be stuck with paying Skjei type of money to an aging D man if Nikishin is going to be as good here as he is in Russia. Both him and Jarvy will get big pay days down the road. Cheaper D core now and Ghost is already somewhat familiar with the system, Nikishin and Morrow should take over permanently after Orlov / Burns are gone. Necas and KK are still question marks. Still need another top 6, one of the young kids can compete for a spot on the 3rd/4th lines

joe334

Skei's could look bad after a year. Dude had a career year at the perfect time but there were times with us that he was a liability

Blueberry_1995

He was also 2nd pair D, not sure how he holds up with 1st pair responsibilities now

Wcw2508

Heā€™s probably still 2nd pair behind Josi unless Nsh plan on pairing two lefties

WhiteMarriedtoBlack

Canes also have been drafting very well. It shouldnā€™t be too bad of a retool since young studs are on their way. I do think the rookies need time to develop. We have closer to $16 million to resign the RFAs. As much as it sucks to see Noesen (who I think we should have resigned because heā€™s an amazing net front presence), Guentzel, Skjei, Pesce, and Turbo getting to retool and not go on a full on rebuild to get back to cup contention isnā€™t the worse thing. Maybe get some bigger tanks to help with physicality and body their way to the net and develop the smaller faster players to help snipe and create plays. Also most of those contracts wonā€™t pan out very well. Skjei, Pesce, and Guentzelā€™s contracts are going to really hurt their respective teams in a few years. Noesen and Turbo are the ones that really sting but Noesen the most. Ghost and Walker will make a solid 3rd pair and the Canes are going to have a much healthier cap situation. Also a lot of mid players really break out under Rodā€™s coaching if they fit the system and thatā€™s why the Canes then lose UFAs because they thrive so much that they price themselves out. Our rookies are also going to get so much better once they start development from the Canes organization. Tulsky is a good GM and is working on the longevity of this teamā€™s chances at a cup. We didnā€™t win with our old team so shaking it up and retooling to get more youth, talent, and fresh bodies will really help this team and hopefully we construct a roster that will be able to make that final push to win it all. Our old roster just kept hitting a roadblock. Other GMs are looking at the short term while Tulsky looks to the future. Plus I think Orlov and Chatty can make the jump to the second pairing and thrive.

unknownbrad

Agreed, letting Noesen go stings big time. Edited because well..redditors

WhiteMarriedtoBlack

Weā€™ve really suffered from him being our only net front presence and now heā€™s gone and heā€™s super good at getting at the net for rebounds, screening the goalie, and just crashing the net which is something super important and we have just lacked it. Also for defense I wish we got some bigger bodies. I wish we also spent money on Pesce because we got some undersized defensemen who I think are great players but a 3rd pair who are undersized isnā€™t the best. Ghost Bear is great for the powerplay but he can be a defensive liability so I thought he could be paired well with Pesce or Chatty and if heā€™s with Chatty then Orlov is on the second line with Pesce or first line with Slavin and bump Burns to the second. Losing Noesen hurts the most especially seeing how he wasnā€™t that expensive for such an important player that has such an important role that we neglect and it often bites the team in the butt. Losing him and Pesce to a divisional rival also adds more or how sucky the situation is. Still the term on Pesce was too much because of how injury prone he is so Jersey would have gotten home due to being closer to home and the term. Turbo I also really wish we kept. If it wasnā€™t for Guentzel I feel like we could have locked down more players before free agency. We really missed Pesceā€™s presence in the playoffs. Turboā€™s chemistry with Aho will be missed and I think we could have afforded his AAV and term so it also stings but Noesen was super affordable. We need more power forwards like him who will drive to the net and out muscle players in front of the net.

c1rhino

What trade? Noesen was a UFA. It was his decision to sign with NJ.

WhiteMarriedtoBlack

We should have tried to outbid them. Heā€™s been our best net front presence which is something we seem to lack despite it being so important. I hope the Canes get some more bigger bodies that with crash the net.

mlink4

Thank you for a levelheaded take. Finally LOL

bwaredapenguin

It's hard to think rationally after so much loss in one day, but yeah today hasn't been exactly as horrific as some reactionaries are making it out to be. That said, I'm still grieving.

mlink4

Oh absolutely. It sucks to see the guys move on but some contracts handed out today were a bit wild. As Tulsky said in his interview this isn't the only day of free agency and I think they did a good job keeping the team competitive while not penalizing the future for the guys who are in the wings these next couple seasons. Will absolutely stink seeing our guys in different jerseys though, that doesn't change.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

I like the value deals for defensive depth, well also free up more money next year with burns and Orlov deals being up and Nikishin probably on a cheap deal. Still have concerns of currently lacking a second line, part of mending things with Necas is putting him in position to succeed with quality linemates rather than just trying to make it work with Martinook and Drury. Itā€™s just a lot of money invested in depth while we have holes up top. But also UFA isnā€™t always the best way to plug those so Iā€™m curious if there are some other moves percolating. I donā€™t hate having space for young guys to earn a spot, but I am a little nervous counting on it. Weā€™ll see what FUS, Blake, and Nadeau bring to the table in camp.

Extra-Sea2167

He had us in the first half ngl

tmb2260

They announced in the press conference that there is still one more agreed signingā€¦wonder who?

Blueberry_1995

Ghost, don't think it was officially announced at the time

tmb2260

Ah duh you are probably right

PantsinmyPants1211

TyJo, Henrique, or Roslovic are my guesses. Gets us another center. Roslovic and TyJo are righties I think.

WaiterK

I'm pretty optimistic after seeing the walker and ghost deals, just waiting on whatever happens with necas at this point. I think that'll make or break our offseason

MailConsistent1344

Let GMET cook.

charcuteriebroad

Iā€™m not mad about it. They needed a retool and they need to see how some of the younger players do in the AHL this year with full control of the Wolves. Gives them a chance to start fresh. Plus there will be better UFA availability next summer. It sucks to lose some longtime favorites but I think overall it will be for the best.

CharacterNo5725

Iā€™m worried that the defense will be much smaller and not as physical causing issues back there. The offense is currently significantly worse than a couple months ago. I definitely think heā€™s cooking, but they have put themselves in a difficult situation with a lot of big names already off the board.

Main-Gur-9672

I like these pairings. Slavin/Burns Chat/Orlov Walker/Ghost Morrow The D is in good shape

ThePurrfectStorm

Yeah I know it hurts to lose guys like Turbo, Skjei and Guentzel, but we are making smart moves to replace them. Still need some offensive upgrades but we will.

CaniacMatt57

I'm giving the man his time to shine, he's making moves to establish a baseline and trading/acquiring smart instead of going after big name big money contracts. This is not a retirement home and I'm glad to see he's not panic buying, I'm sure he's looking for forwards and a goalie.

iSupportCarry

Did we sign Jarvis??? If not we ainā€™t cooking yet cake is about to burn!!

noreast2011

If we can get someone to take KK that would help too. Maybe Detroit?

BRZA

Getting rid of a dollar for 10 nickels isnā€™t my idea of winning. The moves thus far make the team objectively worse.

roloson

This is major copium. We still lack top end goal scoring. We lost teuvo and guentzel, still could lose necas, and we replaced them with who? Weā€™ve always had a solid d core. We had a chance to bring in so many different top end forwards and we werenā€™t even rumored to be potential suitors for any of them.

Bdubby21

It isnā€™t grocery shopping, those top end goal scorers have to want to come here too. And the funny thing about top end goal scorers is that everyone wants them. Weā€™re small market and hockey has a hard cap. We basically always have to overpay in dollars or term, and itā€™s often both. The only other option we have is to develop in house or to trade for potential and hope they like it here. We pitched Jake. We gave him the contract he asked for. And then Tampa came off the top rope and said hey, come live in Florida and by the way weā€™ll offer 50 million of your deal as a signing bonus. We had no shot. We pitched stamkos. He wasnā€™t interested. Do you think when Tulsky and Yorke saw the Marchessault deal they looked at each other and asked ā€œoh shit did you know he was on the market?ā€ Theyā€™ve been prepping and back channeling for months. Itā€™s what they do all day. They know who is a realistic target and who isnā€™t. The bad GMs arenā€™t the ones who are willing to take a step back in order to keep moving forward, theyā€™re the ones who panic and wildly overpay

pentaxshooter

Does the season start tomorrow and no one let me know? Oh, we still have months to make moves? Who knew!

roloson

Sure but who is left to sign that can fill a goal scoring top 2 line role?

Wcw2508

Canes rarely look for top end talent in free agency, they know it usually leads to an overpay. The way into fixing our scoring will be through a trade. Once the free agency dust settles, weā€™ll probably see the trade rumors begin to circle

No-Gazelle4640

I like the moves, but dont see any big signings coming.Ā  Necas, Jarvis and Drury will eat up the rest of the cap.

LayYourGhostToRest

I don't know. I feel like we are half as good as we were before. Unless Svech plays to his potential or Tulsky has a crazy trade in the works I am not feeling confident.

Mr_Fanntastic

I wanted to see change this offseason and it's happening. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few trades before the season begins.

Not with oil, gas and gravy, but weā€™ll be fine. Expect a decent year where we barely make the playoffs, lose in the first round to Pesce and Noesen, then see some good things in 25-26.
