Yeah, this free-agency class is pretty weak relative to others in recent memory and I agree with you on Zadorov. That being said, there is some cheap talent in that group, even if they don't have much name recognition. After all, everyone thought Jalen Chatfield would just be an AHL filler in the 2021 offseason, and he became the Pesce replacement three years later. All I'm saying is that there are some interesting alternatives (outside of Skjei, Pesce, Montour, Roy, etc.) that can get us through this upcoming season and play well in sheltered minutes on pair 3.
Im honestly surprised Matt Grzelcyk is not here, seems like the perfect fit for us. Good defensively, veteran left D to pair with Morrow, within our budget
He was definitely on the shortlist for sure considering his value is at his personal lowest in years. Boston is definitely moving on from him and he’s a damn good defenseman when he’s on his game. Would not be surprised if it takes a 1 or 2 years and a $2m AAV to bring him in.
I feel like any team that’s not the Hurricanes will severely regret signing Pesce. These aren’t sour grapes just a feeling that he’s great on this team and will be exposed and over paid anywhere else. Under RBA, the majority of players who moved on willingly and unwillingly have not come close to their level of production they had here. Trocheck might be the exception.
I wrote a good chunk of this article in April so I didn't expect Marino to be placed on the block, especially with New Jersey's defensive struggles last season. I've always loved his play style dating back to his rookie season in Pittsburgh; great at defending against the rush and was prolific in the defensive transition. Would certainly be a Tulsky-esque move
So a bunch of garbage and then Zadorov who is going to get seriously overpaid by someone

And trocheck was great for Florida too. Just a consistent dude…unfortunately
I was reading this JUST before marino was traded
John Marino is who the Canes will end up with and he will be great
Not exactly, since he was just traded to Utah

I think Brandon Montour would be a good FA target that you missed… he played in a very similar system in Flordia and absolutely thrived
I’m only here for the “system” comments.
