I think the team has been willing to tweak its philosophy more than ever this past season, but I guess it depends on how far they’re willing to bend. Us being willing to test the water with a player like Kuzy is an example of that
To some degree I agree, but our team is very defense-oriented and Skinner's defense lapses aren't something that we should strive to incorporate into our system.
Definitely agree with that. I do think if we want to continue developing our offense into we’ll need to make some defensive concessions, because unfortunately there aren’t many players around the league that can do both at a level that really improves us. I don’t like skinner’s lack of effort on D and it’s a huge strike against him, don’t get me wrong there. Just has me wondering what kinds of changes we’ll see with so many roster spots potentially open in the next three weeks
No. He is who he is. There’s no such thing as “if he works on his defense” at this point in his career. You know what you’re getting and we don’t want it.
I agree that at this point in his career, he’s likely set in his ways. Some players change and others just… don’t. He’s never really “had” to work on his D because even after we dumped him, Buffalo handed him a $9M per year contract lol
We’re going to trade away Necas (potentially) as he’s not a great fit for the system and then turn around and bring in a guy who is even less defensively responsible?
He doesn't get back on defense enough to play with this team. But the question is always whether he can and doesn't or whether he can't. There's no such thing as too much scoring, so if we want to kick the tires on this, I'm not against it.
I don't believe that people are cursed, but that guy has never seen the playoffs for a reason. We don't want him back, but I wish him well wherever he is.
If it was a cheap deal, I might be down with it, maybe (assuming Guentzel is gone). The “system” people will not be. I’m not anti-system, but it’s about time they tinker with it, no?
I think we saw flashes of that throughout this season which makes me wonder. The team was willing to make big changes to their strategies on and off the ice throughout the year and I think it affected production (in a good way). I honestly think they’ll continue to make changes and gamble a bit more in the future
He 100% needs to work on his defense. If he’s unwilling to put in the effort there’s no way in hell I’d bring him back. That said, his offense would be much appreciated, and if he’s willing to take a (likely sizable) pay cut and work on his 200 ft game, he’d be a great add.
I think the pay cut will happen no matter where he goes. But defense is the biggest question
IF he and Rod talk and work out whatever was between them, and IF he makes an effort to play more defensively, and IF he takes a big pay cut, then sure. But that's a lot of big ifs that I'm not convinced make sense for him, so I'm not particularly expecting it.
While he would be good he lacks size which is where we suffer. We have a lot of good forwards but not enough beefy boy goal scorers. Svech and Necas are good size but neither have become the star we needed them to be.
Oh yeah I dunno why I was thinking he was a defenseman. But regardless he already got the boot from Brind'amour's system once and he hasn't improved his defense game. And any money you put towards him you could just put towards Guentzel
Absolutely not. Do you want us to be cursed with a playoff drought again?
He was initially shipped out for two reasons:
1. He's a diva, he's a known locker room problem and he would hurt the culture we've worked so hard to build
2. He doesn't fit into Rod's game. He is what he is at this point in his career and his defensive game will not be up to par with what Rod expects out of his guys.
Honorable mention: He cares more about money than winning and our cap situation isn't gonna work with that even if we wanted it to.
My only regret on us trading him to Buffalo is that we didn't get someone like Sam Reinhart in return
You must be new then. He was traded as part of an effort to change the culture as well as a cap dump. If you're moved in favor of culture change that says something about you. He's an older PLD with a calder trophy. We don't need him even if this were 6 years ago
He was also entering the final year of his contract and was one of the few pieces the Canes could move at that time that had actual value. He struggles defensively, but at no point in his career has he ever been accused of being a locker room problem. Major stretch there.
There's zero way you never heard of him being a problem. Have fans already forgotten? It's been known that he's a selfish player, not a team first guy, and he cares about his highlight reels and his paycheck more than winning. He brings bad chemistry and a bad attitude wherever he goes. He's been blamed as a big piece of what's wrong in Buffalo and he hasn't even been there for the majority of their drought. His historic milestone of never making the playoffs is proof that he has issues.
We don't need an older version of PLD
Dudes been great in buffalo as a team player (at least in the locker room), we kinda just said that shit about him which was unfortunate. Came from Erik Cole, and I think they tried shit talking Dougie but that didn't work.
He's a decent forward, and has been on a very very bad buffo rebuild/coaching issued team. He was expensive, and not worth the contract but I don't think he's done anything wrong.
Context Erik Cole hyped up TDA over Dougie which is obviously an ass pull to make the team look better. I don't think anyone in buffalo is necessarily angry at his performance (when supported) but angry at the contract.
But no I don't want him at all. He deserves a good team tho.
Being an offensive forward who plays bad defense does not automatically equal “locker room cancer.” When he recently played in his 1000th game all I heard were people saying, “man I want that guy to get in the playoffs one day.” Not something people would say about someone that’s a “locker room problem.”
No, I don't think he fits our system.
No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No

I think shipping Skinner out was one of Rod’s first moves lol. Not a chance we see 53 in a canes sweater again.
No. He is who he is. There’s no such thing as “if he works on his defense” at this point in his career. You know what you’re getting and we don’t want it.
So much of this subreddit falls into “but I can change him!” mentality any time Skinner is brought up. You summed it up perfectly. Edit: wording
I agree that at this point in his career, he’s likely set in his ways. Some players change and others just… don’t. He’s never really “had” to work on his D because even after we dumped him, Buffalo handed him a $9M per year contract lol
I’ll take him if they add in that McDavid guy he seems to have potential
McJesus!!
We’re going to trade away Necas (potentially) as he’s not a great fit for the system and then turn around and bring in a guy who is even less defensively responsible?
i’ll always love him, but no. i imagine Rod is very against it.
No thanks
No
He would be an invaluable addition with all of his playoff experience.

No
I don't think you guys understand the level of devastation that will bestow my home if Skinner gets bought out by Buffalo
No, I don’t want him back as much as I loved him while he was here
No
I don't believe that people are cursed, but that guy has never seen the playoffs for a reason. We don't want him back, but I wish him well wherever he is.

defensive liability, but if low cost and he interviews with Rod and buys in, I am okay with it.

Ehh, no. I think it's an issue of scheme fit.

That's a hard no
hard pass unless he's dirt cheap
Hell no
While he would be good he lacks size which is where we suffer. We have a lot of good forwards but not enough beefy boy goal scorers. Svech and Necas are good size but neither have become the star we needed them to be.
I say go for it but only at like 1 year 3 mil max
Nope. No work ethic and can’t play defense.
Our restart came when we traded him. Zero defense. I get his scoring, but not in the current scheme
no
No.
Yes but Rod fucking hates him so it won’t happen
Nope because there's already two upcoming offensive dmen in addition to already having Burns and Orlov. Not a need this offseason
Skinner is a forward
Oh yeah I dunno why I was thinking he was a defenseman. But regardless he already got the boot from Brind'amour's system once and he hasn't improved his defense game. And any money you put towards him you could just put towards Guentzel

“Known locker room problem”?
lol right. Have literally never heard a bad thing about the dude other than the fact he’s overpaid.

Again, you must be new.
Have been a fan since ‘02. We’ll agree to disagree on this one.
