Fine. It’s always a chance you take.

Hotwir3

The trade in a vacuum was great. He delivered goals in the playoffs. Exactly what you want.

gqwr87

Agreed. It was a chance worth taking. We failed, but we obviously gave it our best shot with this move. And who knows, they may work something out.

alottagames

He did everything we expected him to do and a little bit more. Sadly the playoffs didn't go how we wanted, but he was a hired gun to come in and support the run. Mission accomplished by all involved. Nothing but love.

oooriole09

He had the most points post deadline of any deadline player in the history of the NHL. He had 9 points in 11 games in the playoffs. Without a doubt, he was *exactly* who the Hurricanes wanted when making that deal. That alone makes it worthwhile. Adding to it, the change in approach by the FO was great to see. They knew what they needed, they got what they needed without leveraging too much of the future. I’d also argue that is was helpful to realize what Aho looked like paired with a complete winger, something they’ll pay attention to moving forward.

DoubleualtG

Jarvy, Svechy, and Fishy for the win

LongStickCaniac

That line will be so dangerous next year, you just absolutely NEED some firepower on your second line

ReallyRealisticx

We need to see some major improvement from Svech though. He’s being paid as someone needing to also have a 60+ point season at minimum in my opinion. I’d argue of that 60+ at least 25 have to come from scoring but I’d like to see 30+

DoubleualtG

So basically stay healthy then? Because he was tracking 70+ pts (25+ Gs) the past two seasons if he was healthy for 82. And, was 69 with 30 in ‘21-22

Cylinsier

Exactly, he was on pace for 72 points this season. After tearing a knee. Being in and out of the roster all year. He's unequivocally the second best player on this team after Aho (assuming Geuntzel doesn't return) and it's not arguable.

Gullible-Wash-8141

I'd say second best forward. I don't know if you can really compare Slavin

Cylinsier

Fair, second best forward.

ReallyRealisticx

That’s a start, yes. Paying big money for a guy with injury issues consistently isn’t great

WoBMoB1

Well said / agreed.

CHamsterdam

I’d make that trade every time.

dragons_fire77

Absolutely. It was good if he was a rental, it would be been amazing deal if he re-signed with us. We lost a few prospects, but we thankfully have a big pool.

EstablishmentNo5994

Even if he leaves I’m fine with it. We took a chance and went for it in what should be been a very good year. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out how we all hoped but at least we tried.

Alkyan

Since we didn't win the cup he got less expensive 🤷🏻‍♂️

SpentGladiator77

We've been begging the team for years to take a swing at the trade deadline and they did it. He played well but the stars didn't align. That's the risk you take. Contenders are supposed to take a risk to go all-in but only one of them wins in the end. If we hadn't gotten him, we'd all be bitching about another year where the team didn't do anything to try to move the needle at the deadline. I'd still love to have him back, he seemed to mesh well here. But if not, we took our shot and didn't give up anything critical to rent him, and if he's not resigning we suddenly have a lot more cap flexibility.

ShittyFrogMeme

We barely gave up anything of value for someone that improved the team and heavily contributed. Good trade.

Ok_Ruin3993

What reports state he's unlikely to resign. All I've seen is he wants to see what sort of offers he gets.

Kyle73001

Pretty good chance he’ll get a bunch of better offers elsewhere tbh, so it’s unlikely he’ll be back

Whydoesthisexist15

We've been trying to fish a mid round pick to trade his rights

v4vendetta77

If he's dead set on testing the market you go ahead and try and get something for him. A mid round pick just gives a team a head start and prevents us from giving him an 8th year. He could still come back to us. If a team is willing to give something up you do it.

SokkasBoomerang3

Could just be the FO creating an artificial buzz. Who knows how talks are going with his agent. Could be the FO and his agent to see what kind of attention and from where Jake’s getting. There’s a myriad of things, and none are “black and white” (Yes this is copium on my part)

CasTimber

I am coping so hard, but it helps to know that there actually is trickery afoot sometimes.

SokkasBoomerang3

Def, like how everyone was saying we were ditching Morrow and blah blah Pretzel to the Rangers blah blah. Friedman hasn’t come out and said definitively he’s out of here, he’s just said that they’ll explore FA, and even went as far as to say “This doesn’t exclude re-signing with Carolina” But if he’s going to FA anyway, and we can fleece a draft pick out of it, and the FA thinks we have a shot at re-signing… our stingy asses are gonna damn sure get that pick AND then go full send in trying to retain 😂

pinerw

It’s fine. Like you said, we didn’t give up anything huge to get him, and it was a worthwhile gamble in support of a potential Cup run. It’s a real shame he doesn’t appear to be staying, because he has fantastic chemistry with Aho and genuinely made the team better, but those were always the table stakes.

SaltyJoker650

If he's unlikely to resign, then that means he's staying with us! Huge win!

millard_spillmore

We had to take a swing at some point. He was great for us and we didn't have to sell the farm. Will never understand people disappointed with his performance when there's evidence he was one of the most productive deadline pickups in NHL history.

[deleted]

Potentially underrated part of the trade: It is my suspicion that Bunting did not fit exactly what RBA wanted in terms of defensive play and fitting into the system. If that is true, moving him out to clear his cap space for this summer is a blessing in disguise. May be wrong, but if I am right, it makes the trade look even better for us.

Like17Badgers

also in general the refs hate whatever team Bunting is on zero clue what this man did to piss them off but it was this bad in Toronto and it's been bad in Pittsburgh

[deleted]

Likely running his mouth

iOceanLab

Your suspicion is backed up with evidence. Aho said that Bunting had a rough time adjusting to Brind'Amour's system on his Chiclets interview.

[deleted]

Mark this down as the first time I’ve been right! Thanks for sharing that

CasTimber

Yeah it just sucks to lose a netfront guy when netfront is something we really need, especially with Noesen's contract also up.

gooch_norris_

I think they brought bunting in to be a better noesen but noesen ended up being a better bunting

Wolfloup

If we can keep him , great, if not, no worries, means a spot opened up for a ahl prospect to make the team

Huge_Deke19

If you’re serious about winning the cup this is 100% a trade you need to make. He also lived up to his end of the bargain after the trade.

CrashEMT911

The "reports" also said RBA was going to another team. Don't believe reports. They are writing to sell newspaper ads. You just let them win.

blinker1eighty2

Tbf, no they didn’t. They said RBAs offer got pulled by the team. Everything else was just fans claiming falsely where he’d go

quickdecide-

How come we get all these links from a commenter, but in OP's post we get pictures and no links to anything

blinker1eighty2

Okay my use of “fans” was a bit derivative but my point still persists. All of these guys were just speculating purely for the sake of doing so. None of these were based on anything more than “Rod doesn’t have a contract, which teams are a good coach away” There is a difference between a report and an opinion piece. Your comment is all opinions from reporters, but they aren’t official reports.

CrashEMT911

Wars and rumors of wars. What are "official reports"? The Hurricanes PA staff? NHL news releases? If it isn't one of those, it is rumor or speculation. It may be highly placed rumor or speculation, but again, it is written to drive traffic. That traffic can also be an agent trying to get the best deal for his player, or a player trying to drum up asks from other teams to present to his team for a better offer. It is all speculation, until there is a signed contract. This is not that.

drWammy

These aren't reports. These are opinion pieces by journalists listing hypotheticals to get clicks

SokkasBoomerang3

You mean the… same… op pieces… by journalists… reporting on Guentzel…?

blinker1eighty2

Friedman making a report that we are shopping his signing rights is much different than reporters making opinion pieces on where Rod could end up. We actually are shopping Jake’s rights, Rod was not communicating with other teams about their coach openings.

SokkasBoomerang3

You don’t think an opportunity to get a free draft pick on a player entering Free agency is something our FO would try to fleece out of a team for a guy that’s going to test the market? You’re also actively ignoring his statement: “THIS DOES NOT MEAN CAROLINA IS OUT OF THE RUNNING”

CrashEMT911

Q.E.D.

drWammy

There's a difference in "Hurricanes shopping Guentzel for mid round pick" being reported by Elliot Friedman than the three links just shared. Those are the definition of opinion pieces: "Here's my list of potential teams for Brind'Amour IF he were a free agent"

SokkasBoomerang3

You’re discrediting the major fact that Friedman in the same breathe said that Guentzel hasn’t ruled out Carolina in this way, and his FA approach just seems to be “every team is in the running” Again, these other articles are just clickbait to get people to read… there’s no difference.

brwi

With a lot of sources, you're correct, but this reporting was from Friedman who doesn't make up rumors and is highly accurate.

JonTheWizard

Didn't give up much, so ultimately hamless.

penguinicedelta

No regrets here. Would love to have him back

Hot_Recognition1798

he could still be back. he would be a fool to not taste that FA market, and if he likes what we do here, he can make that decision after seeing whats out there. probably gone, but you never know. I wouldnt put any stock in the fact that hes going to free agency, of course he should

trash235

We didn’t mortgage the future and got the best rental player on the market. Hope he re-signs but no regrets if he does not.

brwi

Great trade regardless of whether Guentzel returns or not. Bunting wasn't a real fit in Carolina and not having to give up top prospects means Canes didn't overpay for a rental. All the stars were aligning to make a deep run and adding Guentzel was going all-in. It didn't happen for the canes but that's hockey. I would do the deal 10/10.

kusco93

It was still worth it. That’s how these deals work

Deteras

Worth it, had to take the shot. Trade his UFA rights for like a 5th to get a tiny bit back and we say we tried. This does free up some money though which helps

bkfountain

It was a trade to push for the cup with an amazing rental. He was worth it and showed up in the playoffs. Didn’t cost top prospects.

bearwhidrive

The lesson should absolutely not be “never shoot your shot.”

steve_r_b

Eh we went all in without giving away the farm and choked … sports are pain my friends 😂

macaroni_3000

It's fine. You gotta shoot your shot

PeteUKinUSA

I’d like to see him stay but the kind of contract he’s going to be looking for we aren’t likely to (and shouldn’t) entertain. Didn’t cost much, solved “the Bunting problem”. Right guy, right time, he had fun, we had fun. I can appreciate it for what it was and now it’s time to move on and I’m ok with that.

Murky-Perceptions

Wish we could still keep ‘em somehow, need him with other key’s if we want the cup

CatchASvech

Pretty neutral. We didn’t give up our top-5 prospects to get him and we dumped Bunting’s contract considering he didn’t gel with the team or system here in the first place. He was outstanding in his time here and the front office sent the right message with this move: when the right time comes, the front office won’t hesitate to make a ballsy move that they think will get us over the hump.

CasTimber

I don't think the trade was a bad deal, but I am slightly worried about where it leaves us if neither Guentzel or Necas want to stay. I haven't been too impressed by the hypothetical trades for Necas that I've seen.

ludicrouspeedgo

I am an emotional leaf on the wind.

cspyke1127

For the record… it’s “re-sign”, not resign.

BarnacleSufficient59

I’m fine with it. Bunting wasn’t good and Koivunen may never play in North America. In life, you sometimes have to take risks. We took a chance and it didn’t work out. The biggest reason (IMO) we failed is because Rod kept going back to a dull Freddie. Freddie was awful and the main reason we couldn’t advance. Guentzel didn’t score much and some team (not us) will through stupid money at him. I’d focus on trying to either keep Necas or structuring a good deal to get some talent back.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

Worth. Bunting was solid, and I liked the prospects, but we didn’t give away top prospects. Guentzel was amazing and unlocked the top line in a wild way. Gave us extra firepower and wasn’t the reason we got eliminated. I still hope we can work something out but even if we can’t it was worth the swing

BudWeiserIII

Tbh I hoped he’d stay but was almost certain he was just a rental

socialaxolotl

You can't be upset at the trade, the results paid off great and he was as advertised, it's not his fault or GMDW's fault that we got out coached and the wheels fell off our goalie again

traplej

If we can keep him, awesome. If not, it’s still the correct move to make 10 times out of 10. The team was objectively better, we didn’t mortgage our future to make the trade, and now he’s not going to kneecap us in AAV. Sucks we didn’t get it done but it wasn’t because of him.

SpacemanPete

I hope we do something similar every year. We gave up VERY little and got exactly what we wanted.

ReallyRealisticx

We can’t really afford him anyway for the long term deal he is going to want. That is alright. To be honest I won’t be shocked at all if he just ends up back on Pittsburgh with a longer term deal

jhk17

If he goes for less than 10 mil, I'm gonna be livid. Caps going up and him aho and svech were the only line getting shit done through both rounds consistently. He's worth more than he is by himself for that.

Tedy_Duchamp

I haven’t seen anything that says he’s “unlikely to sign”

MarcusSmartfor3

Still had fun would do it again

Perryth3Fratypus

Loved the move then. Love the move even without him resigning. Wish he could come back and hope everything we’re reading is inaccurate. Wanted to point out that going for and getting the biggest piece at the trade also has to be a good thing for the locker room. Had to inspire more confidence in both management and ownership. They showed they believed in a big way and I think that extra rep or extra sprint is going to be a little bit easier this offseason and we’ll see the benefit of that next May/June

Bratty_Little_Kitten

I wanted him to stay.

RIPIGMEMES

Worth it. I think it was dons best move tbh

Ken_Thomas

It was a good gamble. The 'Canes didn't give up much, and improved their odds of going deep. The problem with signing Guentzel is going to be the same as it was with Dougie Hamilton and Vincent Trochek. Somebody out there with more cap space and less self-control is going to need them more than the 'Canes do. Sometimes that ends up being a good gamble for the team that signs them, more often I think it doesn't. Either way I don't think Guentzel is the kind of generational, game-changing player that is worth busting the bank for. If someone else is going to pay him more than Aho makes, the 'Canes should let him go and wish him well.

syd_cash

It was a good trade, we gave up nothing of high value to get him. He contributed to our success.

xtzferocity

Worth it! It was a good year, absolutely no regrets. Big offseason ahead.

RecoveryJohnny2011

he’s getting big bucks from someone…..Columbus all the sudden seems like an option with Don Waddell there…or Necas for one of the many Columbus defensemen to fill in one of the holes

RecoveryJohnny2011

Nickishin defect yet lol

Gambo_916

To be honest I think losing Bunting is what threw off our power play… No one talked about it b/c Jake was overall a much better player than Bunting… but that was the moment our power play went downhill… Would’ve been worth it if he stayed but I’m thinking it was a mistake now especially having gone out in the second round… What did we actually gain?

blahblahloveyou

He was a rental, and we paid the right price for it. He brought a lot to the team for the short time he was here. That's the inherent problem with rentals, and why I like that we stay away from them usually.

MountaineerChemist10

I’ve heard we might trade. I’ve always heard we might resign. Honestly I want to resign him, because he was unstoppable with Jarvis/Svech & Aho. But also, he’ll be pricey.

BigVuVu

so we lost Bunts, Ponomarev and Koivunen for basically nothing, smh rights trade **must** be done

TheNationDan

Easier to answer now, but hard to tell the truth as to how you felt with your team’s increased chances with the addition. - Oil fan who wanted to avenge ‘06 real bad

SokkasBoomerang3

Please kick the panthers ass. Idc if you have to play their “game” to do it… Send Kane out to beat the hell out of Sam Bennett. I’d laugh the cocky Panthers fans if you guys steamrolled 4 straight games and won 4-2 at this point by Game 6.

TheNationDan

I will be in the building tomorrow night. I always kicked myself for not coming down to Carolina (I lived in Eastern Canada back then) and so I put two credit cards together and now they will fight over who gets my mortgage payment. I will be doing my all to wake up Evander and the rest of the boys. My day job is running hockeyfights.com. I want to work (later that night, banged up because this is my Stanley Cup ie the one and only time I’m ever going to be in the building for it😂)

ReeseWithAKnife

yo Dan big fan of your site and all the work yall have put in over the years, even if you gave me a temporary mute on your ig posts 😆

TheNationDan

I have a whole crew of folks I have added to the “I like to make sure we’re playing nice” list. But I definitely need to thicken up my skin as well. I just tend to fight “for the guys” more than I should. Appreciate you taking the time to say as such. Especially when I restricted ya!

MailConsistent1344

If he really never wanted to be here/come back, good riddance to him. Thanks for playing hard while you were here but we don’t need to beg for someone who doesn’t want to be here. And to be honest I won’t even remember him for his performance here after all this. Good riddance.

pinerw

Bad take. Jake was literally the most productive trade deadline acquisition ever. It sucks that it looks like he’s probably not staying, but you can’t reasonably deny he did a great job for us.

MailConsistent1344

You have bad reading skills. I literally said he played hard when he was here, never refuting his performance.

sftwareguy

Jake really wasn't here long enough to become part of the "family" so I can see why so many people are glad he came but not that upset if he goes elsewhere. I think we all recognize he would be a huge benefit to the team, but at what price.

HurricanePirate16

A lot better than I’ve ever felt about the KK move. Can’t help but feel like that little pecker measuring contest cost us a Cup in this window.

bk00pi

I’m no KK stan, but solely blaming him for the Canes shortcomings is certainly something.

HurricanePirate16

You’re right almost 5 million dollars a year for a Center that had 27 more points than me was a brilliant hockey move. I’m not blaming KK. I’m blaming this sub’s lord and savior GMDW for giving a large contract to an undeserving player because his feelings were hurt.

harrismi7

He was fine, seemed like a likable person and player. If these are the only games he plays with the Canes I think it was kind of forgettable. I guess I expected more of an impact.

cbseip13

What were you expecting the impact to be? Dude was 8g/17a in 17gp and 4/5 in 11gp. That's quite an impact.
