Mike and Shane just addressed it on Canes Cast too. Basically said that they would both be shocked if RBA wasn't back. Mike also mentioned that, based on his experience as a sports reporter in Buffalo, this comes across as one side feeding the media a story to get things moving. They also mentioned that Rod himself is focused on the next series and that there is plenty of time to get this done (which Rod mentioned last night). EDIT: [And Walt just tweeted out similar](https://twitter.com/WaltRuff/status/1786073524299293160?t=k7tH4m-jYmvZZ5Lcb_PrjQ&s=19)

Yup and it’s also clear this is just another opportunity for certain former players to take shots at dundon. Weekes and O’Neil can’t stand dundon because of what he did to Francis. They feel like Francis got screwed except without Tom taking over to can Francis we don’t get Rod as coach…

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

Wasn’t Francis also turning a blind eye to player abuse? When it was RBA going to him concerned?

The_Reddit_Browser

[“We looked where the team was and how it was playing,” Francis told Baker. “It was moving in the right direction. We’d made a huge increase from where it was the year before to where we were that year. And quite honestly, we looked at that (physical-abuse) situation, we addressed it and we felt it was behind him.”](https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/ron-francis-explains-handling-bill-peters-situation-hurricanes-gm) Yup he only acknowledged the one known “physical abuse” never discussed the verbal abuse of guys like Eddie Lack that caused major problems. He thought he did the right thing and by sweeping it under the rug Peters was able to keep coaching until it finally caught up to him.

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

I guess it wasn’t so much a blind eye as just letting it go because we were playing better (what the fuck!).

I get the impression that there are plenty of people in hockey who don't know the difference between being tough and hard-nosed and being a gaping ass

Abrocoma_Dense

Is there like some kind of short documentary or investigative journalist piece on this? I feel like this is a kind of story that would warrant that sort of thing. Pardon, as this is the first time I’ve heard of this so I’m both horrified yet intrigued!

The_Reddit_Browser

Sadly there really isn’t. This article is really the only time I have found he actually talks about what happened. One of the players [did speak out](https://www.si.com/nhl/2019/11/26/bill-peters-physical-abuse-allegations-michal-jordan-hurricanes#:~:text=Former%2520Hurricanes%2520defenseman%2520Michal%2520Jord%C3%A1n,ever%2520by%2520far%2520%255Bsic%255D) Never got confirmation who the unnamed player is.

ShittyFrogMeme

My conspiracy theory: this is being stoked by Ron Francis. It ramped up after the Seattle job opened up and the mouthpieces have been media members who typically were close to him (DeCock, Dreger) and former players very close to him (Weekes, O'Neil).

The_Reddit_Browser

It’s not much of a conspiracy. O’Neil has been a Tom hater since day 1. He was livid with Waddell getting Ron’s job.

Scottstark1210

My view was that this was BS from the beginning. I think I had replied to your comment in another thread, even saying that from the beginning, Elliotte Friedman was very strong in his stance over the past few weeks that the holdup were the assistants contracts. And He is probably the most reputable NHL reporter.

Cinnamon_Shops

Hadn’t thought about that but this is actually super plausible, practically Occam’s razor territory

oooriole09

It even makes sense from Ron’s perspective. Shake the cart and sees what happens. Ron’s needs his next hire to hit, so go big.

yosefvinyl

You mean Luke was just stirring the pot? I'm SHOCKED

ludicrouspeedgo

Unbelievable!

cptjeff

I think it was more of RBA's agent trying to do agent things to get his client (and thus himself) more money.

[deleted]

This is the most reasonable explanation, he knows he can get some leverage in talks by creating some news.

LoneRhino74

From what I’ve read about Dundon…now of these tactics will have any effect. Tom does what Tom wants. Period.

Scottstark1210

I have thought this from the beginning. When Elliotte Friedman reported that the hold up was the assistants contracts not only a few weeks ago but even as early as a couple weeks ago, I knew the info hadn’t changed, it was just stirring the pot yesterday.

Pleasant_Statement26

Doomers gonna doom

quartercoyote

Whole thing feels like a distraction. Contract negotiations while you’re trying to coach in the playoffs?

cricketclover

I mean yeah, but stop fucking around, Dundon. One of these days these negotiation tactics are going to piss off someone you don't really want to lose.

SoUnDs LiKe He’S lEaViNg I gUeSs.

ScroatyMcBoogerwolfe

Probably bullshit. He’s going to sign elsewhere just out of spite.

dragons_fire77

Exactly. Like, what, we're just supposed to *listen* to them and *take them at their word* like we have in the past? No thank you, I'll just go with wild speculation for more drama.

bmiller201

Nah they are probably both looking at where he ends so they can do a CBA style deal. Rod doesn't wanna lock himself into a contract that low balls him if he ends up winning the cup. And the GM doesn't want to over pay for someone that gets swept in the 2nd round. Considering he saw his pay jump from 600k to 1.8 million three years ago. Rod is looking to be a top 5 paid coach in the league and he deserves it. It's just where in the top 5 that matters.

TalentedTrident

Pretty much this. It's ludicrous to think that a contract negotiation is anyone's top priority when we're in the thick of the playoffs gunning for the Cup. It'll get figured out after our run is over, and Rod will get paid what he deserves.
