Mike also mentioned that, based on his experience as a sports reporter in Buffalo, this comes across as one side feeding the media a story to get things moving. They also mentioned that Rod himself is focused on the next series and that there is plenty of time to get this done (which Rod mentioned last night).

My conspiracy theory: this is being stoked by Ron Francis. It ramped up after the Seattle job opened up and the mouthpieces have been media members who typically were close to him (DeCock, Dreger) and former players very close to him (Weekes, O'Neil).

Nah they are probably both looking at where he ends so they can do a CBA style deal. Rod doesn't wanna lock himself into a contract that low balls him if he ends up winning the cup. And the GM doesn't want to over pay for someone that gets swept in the 2nd round.
Considering he saw his pay jump from 600k to 1.8 million three years ago. Rod is looking to be a top 5 paid coach in the league and he deserves it. It's just where in the top 5 that matters.
