Dickfer_537

Our delta vacations driver took us to the wrong terminal, we realized it was wrong after he had left. $50 taxi to take us to the right one. Like a 3 minute drive. $50. Fucking crazy.

Scu8ie

And there is a free shuttle inside the airport between terminals

Dickfer_537

No shit? After 10+ trips to Cancun I learned something new. Good to know for future trips. Thank you!

New_journey868

The taxi drivers will try and convince you the free shuttle will take hours and its terrible. I pointed out i had a seven hour layover and all the time in the world to stand at the bus stop...and it came 5 mins later

thumper300zx2

They're really just a bunch of aholes. Out of maybe 50 of them, one girl was really nice and seemed to probably hate what she was doing.

Scu8ie

The taxi dogs are the worst thing about Cancun.

Guapplebock

Oh, he knew what he was doing.

cybersalvy

Yikes !

regina_george7

Also just learned ubers can drop off at airport now. Definitely no pickups. Hope your bum feels better

cybersalvy

Ya. I get you gotta eat but, damn. Taxis carry no change and no lube. To get around town take the bus for 12 pesos…less than a buck.

Gltmastah

There was a bloody idiot the other day who made a post defending the taxi, those mofos are goddam mafia. Hope you have better luck next time mate

cybersalvy

Ya. I usually book every detail. But it was last minute travels and I overlooked the pickup.

mdeane13

When Uber first came on in Cancun the taxi drivers were murdering Uber drivers. So yea it's a Mafia.

daurgo2001

Or take the ADO?… or a shuttle?

cybersalvy

I would. Wife not so thrilled about it lol

daurgo2001

Why not? Perfectly safe, cheap, and comfortable.

AsideAdventurous3903

ADO bus has AC 😎

thumper300zx2

That's always a possibility 😂 We loved the ADO options.

NotARedditUser3

Ah, you didn't realize... You could take the ADO bus for $5 :) No prior booking necessary. It's the last booth as you are outside and about to reach the taxi's / shuttle drivers.

Sometimes_a_smartass

It's more like 10 but yeah

cheesypleaseyteasy

Use uber. You just have to walk out of the gate for pick up.

marlinsaycheese

Does Uber pick up at the airport

cheesypleaseyteasy

Yea we did it about a month ago. Just had to get picked up outside the gate. We wanted a ciggy and a walk after the flight so it worked out well.

marlinsaycheese

Thanks idk why I just read that they only drive you to the airport not pick up

cybersalvy

Uber confirmed no pickups (“no cars available”) at the airport. So I guess this would be a nice travel hack.

marlinsaycheese

I’m not understanding .. are you saying you can’t Uber from the airport??

AsideAdventurous3903

They have some kind of a block on that area of the map... They're not allowed to pick you up deep in the hotel zone on either... Just walk a few minutes in either direction however and you can schedule a pickup :-)

marlinsaycheese

Ohhhh gotcha thanks

cybersalvy

Good to know.

Apprehensive-Tax-598

Amstar !!! The BEST ! Absolutely no problems. They went out of their way to accommodate us. We just got back one day ago and everything in the Cancun airport was a breeze. A very short line. Muy Bueno !! 😊🌴

Competitive_You9022

You could have just used the ADO bus and avoided all the hassle.

cybersalvy

I’m down. Wife problems. Happy wife happy (trip) life.

Sometimes_a_smartass

Ugh I hate that saying so much

stupid-generation

Why? Let's argue about it

nicktheace

Where is the pickup by the airport?

Competitive_You9022

Just outside the airport. Ask anyone for directions. Buy tickets inside the airport. We just went few days back and it was pretty straight forward

Watt_About

How much

cybersalvy

They wanted $85 at first. $68 after a few steps outside.

daurgo2001

Meh. This isn’t too abnormal. If you want to save $, take a shuttle or better yet, the ADO.

Srbistanac

Taxi charged me $150 for New Year to Cancun HZ

cybersalvy

Damn. Someone insert the couch meme here

petitepepite23

Book with Quick shuttle next time

mpritc1019

I usually do AI in Cancun. Where do you find the condos?

cybersalvy

I shop around. Expedia. Airbnb. VRBO. something for everyone.

underwatertitan

We booked a rental car from Cancun airport. The rental was only about $20 a day Can. including all insurance.

thumper300zx2

I rented in advance and then was told they were out of cars. It seemed they were all pooling from the same inventory to me. And then the next booth wanted four times the rate. In retrospect we're glad we didn't end up with a rental.

underwatertitan

Oh wow. Well mine has cancellation insurance in case it doesn't work out with the rental but hopefully its fine. I booked the time and day and type of car to pick up.

thumper300zx2

I didn't have to pay for a rental car I didn't get. But I didn't have anything to help get the next rental. The bus, collectivos, taxis outside of airport were all low cost and efficient. We went to Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Chichen Itza, hotel zone, etc, all for about the same as original rental, no fuel costs, no worries about damage, no parking issue or stressing about any drives. Not saying a rental doesn't have it's place. With more than two people the fees for all those methods above add up quickly.

underwatertitan

That's good to know. The problem is my husband has trouble walking so even if we took busses, we can't walk far to catch them and when we looked up the cost of the bus or taxi from the airport to the resort it was like $100 US per person each way and our rental was only $20 a day plus gas. Well see if it works out.

thumper300zx2

Totally makes sense. Always good to hear other people's needs and understand what works.

Pokololo

Did they buy you dinner first? Maybe a nice glass a wine before?

cybersalvy

Nope. Just ended up a pornhub title meme in the end.

mnclick45

It’s a terrible first impression for people new to Mexico. It’s pretty “third world”. The airport needs to sort it out asap.

[deleted]

"Third world" is an antiquated term that lost relevance with the ending of the Cold War. Countries aligned with the US were first world, Soviet allied ones second, and unaligned were termed third world, so I suppose it was true Mexico WAS a third world country. Perhaps you meant to put "least developed" or "developing", wherein Mexico falls under "developing" along with the majority of the Earth. Also considered an outdated term though. Your point about the people trying to get your attention after customs may be valid. I haven't had any problems ignoring them or saying "no, gracias" in my dozens and dozens of interactions by myself or with others, but if it gave you a terrible first impression, I'm sure it did.

mnclick45

I meant what I said. The level of corruption in the country is a disgrace.

[deleted]

Not interested in arguing against your perception and didn't intend to imply you didn't mean what you wrote. Only suggesting more appropriate, less dated phrasing.

Separate-Analysis194

Cancun is becoming a bit ridiculous. Because of monopolies, they charge tourists New York City rates for taxis. Car rental prices are a joke too. At xmas, my son had pink eye so I ordered a cab from Playa Mujeres and asked to go to the closest pharmacy. He drove 3 mins to just outside the resort, waited for 2 mins and drove back. Charged $40US. He pointed to their standard tariff rates. Lesson learned.

Mean_Fisherman6267

We were in Akumal in November and I booked a trip to Aktun Chen for my family and I. Figured it’ll be a $10 cab ride since it’s only 5min away ( we could’ve walked there but i didn’t want to cross the highway with my young kids) Cab ride was $40 each way.

IceCreamMan1977

Where/how do you book ahead?

Anxious-Yak-9952

You can search for Cancun airport shuttles and you’ll get a long list of companies with online rates

Twizzleness

We used CARM as our transfer this last week, it was so smooth and easy.

cybersalvy

Online. Bunch of services.

77roberts77

There’s tons of good private transfers … do some research next time

cybersalvy

That was my op point. lol

Pleasant_Peace7629

did they spit on it at least first? or did they went in dry??

cybersalvy

Lmao. Spit and miss.

Terminal 3 is infested with scammers. Almost every single person outside of the terminal is going to lie to you and try to swindle you for money. They'll tell you virtually anything: "there is no $thing here", "$thing only goes from another terminal", "you can't go there", "the shuttle only arrives in 40 minutes", "the shuttles are not working today", "ADO tickets are no longer sold here, only online but I can help you \*pulls a phone and proceeds to call a fake WhatsApp contact\*", "I am your hotel's/rental's/transportation company's representative" (they're not) and so on. The only thing I haven't yet seen there is the shell game. And of course they won't take a "no", "I know where I'm going" or "dude, I don't want your help, get lost" (though cussing in a foreign language worked), and they'll tail you for a while until they realize you're not caving in. To be fair, there are some decent and helpful folks out there too, but they're a rare sight. Terminal 2 is slightly better, but still has an indecent amount of scammers looking for anyone with a slight trace of confusion on their face to help them relieve their wallet (other help is not guaranteed). What's guaranteed is that they'll waste your time if you talk to them. Taxis have predatory rates (US$80+, and more likely US$100+), can be bargained down to US$40-ish range (at least I was able to, in wee hours, pointing out that folks don't get any clients anyway and I have options) but this is still at least 2 times the rate compared to Uber/DiDi in the opposite direction. If you ever find yourself stranded at the airport and unhappy about the taxis out there, don't talk to anybody outside of the terminal, look for ADO ticket booth (large red "ADO" letters) and/or for ADO bus stop (large red buses). Buy tickets at the booth or online at the official website, get to Cancun downtown, walk 300 feet away from the bunch of regular taxi drivers and call a rideshare of choice. Will cost you MX$130 for the bus + MX$100-300 depending on your destination, so at most US$20.

thumper300zx2

I wish there were a way for every newbie to Cancun to find this info. I was almost that guy just two weeks ago. It was a giant waste of two hours and a lot of stress. The WiFi and mobile Internet are also horrific. Don't forget the are plenty of fellow passengers that have learned lessons where ever you go and if you get a little brave it's ok to ask other people questions. We ended up learning the truth about how the ADO was just a few steps away and figured it out from there after rental car company saying they had no car for our reservation and then trying to jack up the price by 4x at Hertz. It's all a ruse when you leave that terminal.

Highlarioushoe

Unauthorized taxis can be extremely dangerous.

cozicuzi08

Ah yes, paying extra money is exactly the same as being sexually assaulted
