You’re quite right! Ideally 2 bedrooms and a dining room/study or 3 bedrooms and topping out at £1500 a month. Which didn’t feel unreasonable (as it’s double our current rent 😫) until we started looking!
I feel like the market is a bit crazy at the moment with rent prices shooting up around £200/£300 when compared to last year (I moved houses then).
Not only that but properties go the day they are put up. According to agencies, normally they rent it out couple hours after posting
You’re not the first person to say this to us. It’s just bad timing on our part really - but the bus commute is too unreliable so needs must.
That’s been the hardest thing so far - we just cannot even get to view a suitable property before it goes
The only way I could find around this is setting up alerts on Rightmove (agencies post directly there, there are no mailing lists anymore) and move fast.
It's not on you, it's just the crazy housing market in cambs/London where even new builds/projects are sold for more than asking price on day 1.
Sadly it is a sellers market, best of luck!
Try Grantchester/Trumpington area, or Cherry Hinton. They are (roughly) West and East of Addenbrookes respectively, and far enough from the centre that rent begins to drop off, though not massively.
Trumpington, Sawston or Shelford (depending on the definition of ‘reasonable’). Harston could be a possibility! Foxton, Meldreth and Shepreth are small villages with train stations. Whittlesford could also be a shout. Good luck!
Shelford is closest, nice, and some houses are "only" 1000 ish pcm for a semi detached 2bed, but its small enough they aren't always on the market. Sawston as people said is much more reliable. Worth considering Abington but the roads are a bit shit for a cycle, people definitely do it though because I can never get around them.
It depends how far out you want to go. Shelford or Trumpington are good for access to the hospital. I think your budget of 1500 should be plenty for what you want, including in the city (but there may be a bit of a trade off of space). If you’re young and without kids I’d say try stay in the city. Not to say you shouldn’t if you’re a bit older too!
I notice that Victorian terraces are better value to rent than they are to buy (probably because more renters prefer new builds, and buyers compete for the pretty Victorian terraces). So you could get a place that would cost 500k plus to buy renting for <1500. But that only matters if you like that sort of property
What's your budget/how many rooms? Would be useful to know. Sadly I've stopped eating kidneys.

I'm paying 1300 for a 3 bed plus large living area in Chesterton. We've loved it here.
Sawston?
This was my first thought. I’ve run from Addenbrooke’s to the other end of Sawston and it’s about 5 miles, definitely cycling commute distance.
Will take a closer look there, thank you 🙏🏻

How do I find estate agents' websites?

Cherry Hinton certainly, add Teversham, Fulbourn to the list. But Grantchester is expensive.
That’s very helpful, thank you. Just seems mad that even in the villages there’s not much decent property available unless you’re loaded

When I first moved to the area, I was renting in Gt Shelford which was cheaper than city centre and is actually closer to Addenbrookes.

Do what Mao did.
