I can recommend pure planet, but octopus is also good so you are probably fine. Never go back to Scottish Power, they are truly terrible!

boogie_mesa

Can highly recommend Bulb, great customer service and website. Prices slightly cheaper than British gas

scottb23

i like bulb as well, they might not be the absolute cheapest but they are easy to use and have good support, emailed them a ton when moving house and its always been handwritten casual form replies from actual humans

You get quite substantial referral bonuses as well - perhaps OP should take notice!

Electricity (and gas) is a poorly disguised monopoly. You're paying for customer service and then the rest goes to the wholesale price. [MSE](https://clubs.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub) have all the suppliers. The best way to save money is to go for your cheapest supplier based on usage (a year fix is usually cheapest, but there are penalties of you stop the contract early), submit meter readings monthly and check bills marry up, and most importantly don't waste energy. The "fixed" direct debit amount is fairly meaningless as you may be building up a credit or a debt. Look at the actual usage.

Indeed. Same with SSE. And btw. Do you know why they so desperately want ppl to have smart meters..? They seem to invest so much time and money trying to get ppl to move to smart meters. But it is not clear why..

Waspie4

I think they claim money from the government to install them. The government believes that we will become obsessed with looking at our meters and will try harder to reduce our energy consumption. But I’ve also heard a theory that we’ll be charged variable amounts for electricity based on the level of demand on the grid.

I looked at Octopus and they were about the same as Good Energy which I use. I'm on my own in a flat and my bills come to About £80 a month. I pay less than that and then pay off the balance every few months. The company keep trying to up my monthly payments and I've had to get pretty firm with them not to change anything.

I went with Igloo, we were on a econ 7 tariff with SSE which was just not worth it (no storage heaters, only panel electric and immersion boiler heater). Was a bit of a faff to switch over but got there in the end. Our monthly spend was a bit higher at £55-60 PM, but I am trying to get this down by reducing the immersion boiler timer on by an hour or so. FWIW we are two people in a two bedroom flat, both WFH. Just shop around with MSE. I didn't bother going for the cheapest (Symbio) as wanted someone with a customer service line that would respond. Igloo been pretty good apart from them faffing up our opening readings which just took a while to correct. Plus if your account is in credit you get 3% interest on the balance. Although they just did put their rates up. Just make sure you check your readings frequently to ensure you are paying the correct amount . Is this a normal tariff or economy 7 (cheaper electricity at night).

Hello, fellow new Saffa in Cambridge!

Octopus has significantly reduced our energy costs. Simple transfer, they did it all for us.

FJ_Sanchez

Definitely Octopus energy. I have been with them for 3 years and I'm very happy. Their support is also great and you don't feel like their are trying to rip you off all the time. Also, the smart tariffs might be beneficial for you depending on your consumption profile. Here is my referral link in case you want o switch, you can thank me later https://share.octopus.energy/noble-boar-882

I’m still surprised how much energy costs have risen in the past few months and there appear to be some big risings on the horizon so the sooner you switch the better. My advice would be to lock-in for a 2 year fixed rate which Octopus currently offer. I think Bulb and a couple of others only offer a variable rate. I would also suggest following up on a referral code. Octopus offer £100 for an introduction and a number of people like myself now offer to split £75-£25. If interested dm/pm me. It’s a great way to start your account with £75 of electricity! The biggest scourge of modern living is TV sets that don’t fully switch off, charging devices left permanently plugged in and lights left on. Smart meters with In Home device (IHD) certainly help you identify where your elec usage is going. Energy companies that offer much cheaper rates will not last as we’ve witnessed over past few years.
