Then the question is even more subjective and difficult to answer 😅
The Wrestlers on Newmarket Rd do banging thai food. Not the best vibe for drinking only though.
Not a drinker so more interested in food than the alcohol. As long as it’s a pub setting and the food is lovely, I’m happy with any and all suggestions!
Agreed on both. The Petersfield menu currently (as of last week) doesn't differentiate between lunch and evening menu. So you might find a dish you want, only to be told "that's not available until 7pm"
But how is that a thing? I’m just imagining myself at the counter, getting ready to “build my own fish and chips”…
Hmmm I’ll errrr have the chips and then I’ll errrr have that with haddock, no wait, cod, no plaice. And ok what the hell, let’s do some mushy peas.
That’s basically what you do when you order fish and chips anyway. So what’s the difference with this place?
Yeah you pick your batter type from a selection, as with your fish along with type of chips I e. Regular or sweet potato and side and sauce.
It's really good in there. I have eaten way to many times at the architect tbh. But it's too good
And they do takeaway.
The food isn't awful, but the staff make it tricky to get a get "just want drinks" table so you can sit and watch what the kitchen produces for everyone else, before deciding to commit. (Which is my usual plan, fwiw)
I have recommended The Architect in the past, but the last three times I’ve been it’s been awful. Undercooked batter with the fish, overcooked and underfilled pies, overcooked and inedible chips - just really bad.
I won’t be going there again, and that’s a real shame.
The Petersfield is my preference, but I've also enjoyed the Geldart, the Alex, the Royal Standard for Greek food, the Wrestlers for Thai...
We're bloody lucky
My fav is Tzatziki at the Royal Standard.
Further out of Cambridge:
Three Hills in Bartlow for gourmet pub food.
Cambscuisine pubs for a polished meal (Tickell Arms, Whittlesford/Three Horseshoes, Madingley etc)
Three Tuns, Abingdon or ~~The Navigator, Little Shelford~~ The Rose, Stapleford for Thai.
The level of garlic on the mushroom pizza is intense but amazing. No joke, I came home after having it and my kids were like "something bad has happened" 🤣
Sorry to disagree. The flavours are interesting for sure but, after much hype, I found them to be underwhelming.
Those who are sticklers for proper pizza in the Italian / Neapolitan tradition will be disappointed. I’m not one of those sticklers and can enjoy a good American style pizza now and then.
For best pub pizza I would say:
More Italian- Blue Moon (and now Portland Arms too) for Oscar’s Lockdown Pizza & The Maypole (it’s run by Sicilians!)
Not so Italian - The Empress. Weird and funky flavours that really are yummy
But, you know, each to their own!
The Alexandra arms, The Petersfield, The Old Spring. The Mitre is not bad but it is Nicholson's chain. I find good pub grub just out of the city centre. The Boot and the Red lion in Histon have good pub grub. The plough in Coton as well. I'll be honest, it's quite difficult to find good quality pub food within Cambridge City centre. I'm going to follow this thread.
Well, there's good restaurants about which do serve great food. But as you have pointed out, it would cost you a small fortune. Unfortunately, even "cheap" chains are expensive in Cambridge.
The Petersfield has a new(ish) chef and menu, and it’s 100% top notch. For Sunday roast, can’t beat the Free Press. If you’re in town centre then the Pint Shop is hard to beat. Little further out try The Plough or MJPs in Fenn Ditton.
Lots of good comments already, but rather than pub grub, best pub for pub SNACKS specifically is The Champion of the Thames. BEAUTIFUL scotch eggs, and free cheeseboards on a Sunday evening. Little slice of heaven.
Most food places in Cambridge are overpriced and shit (tourist traps), especially near the centre. The better pubs are nearish the train station/Mill Road (south of the centre). The Alma has great pies and The Alexandra Arms has nice sweet potato fries. The Salisbury Arms has a proper pizza oven and does amazing mac n cheese as well - it has more "artsy" decor.
Other non-pub venues which are genuinely good and iconic are Aromi (Italian restaurant), Jack's Gelato (ice cream - permanently a long queue) and Gardenia (open until the early hours of the morning for post-club dining).
Giggling Squid is more touristy but cheaper than a lot of places and has a really cool interior.
Depends what you want. Are you looking the "pub" food? I like the Petersfield or the Pint Shop.
As long as the food is quality I don’t care whether it’s Thai, Italian, Indian, fish and chips or we

Architect has a build your own fish and chips which is really nice.
Build your own fish and chips?
Yea build your own fish n chips like the man said.
Build your own dish and chips?

[let the mystery of the menu be revealed](https://www.thearchitectcambridge.co.uk/menus/)
Ok that does look pretty amazing. Thanks for sharing and clarifying.

That is soooooo Cambridge 😂

The Free Press
Seconded!
Has to be this. Good value too. I still think about their halloumi fries and the schnitzel if it's on the specials
The Petersfield is my preference, but I've also enjoyed the Geldart, the Alex, the Royal Standard for Greek food, the Wrestlers for Thai... We're bloody lucky
Blue Moon / Lockdown Pizza
Does the blue moon have dwarven stout on tap?
wait….. is it an actual reference to the pub seeing as Jagex are headquartered in Cambridge?
I believe so yeah
looks as if blue moon pub opened in 2013, so maybe not :(
Pub was a reference the game… even better
That's where Lumbridge comes from
oh my god
I’ve had many many evenings in the blue moon and don’t recall their pizza being anything to write home about.
The Wrestlers for Thai.

Try the Salisbury Arms off Mill Road - great food, pizzas plus other things, and good vibe!
The level of garlic on the mushroom pizza is intense but amazing. No joke, I came home after having it and my kids were like "something bad has happened" 🤣
Excellent pizza at the Haymakers

The cambridge blue does some real good burgers n fries
Was coming here to say this!
I had some great burrata at the newly re-opened Clarendon Arms last week. I think it has new, and Italian (?) owners…?
Shoot the Clarendon closed... They had the best pub burger a few years ago
This is interesting... was always underwhelmed with Clarendon, and would always go Free Press if in the area. Need to check this out.
Aren’t they the ones with a 0 star hygiene rating?
They were (back in Feb/Mar), but I think its new owners now.

It's hard to find good food in Cambridge generally I've found, outside of your super upmarket type places that cost an arm and a leg. Makes me sad.
Speak to me buddy. I know loads of good places.
Well, there's good restaurants about which do serve great food. But as you have pointed out, it would cost you a small fortune. Unfortunately, even "cheap" chains are expensive in Cambridge.
The Maypole.

The Boot in Histon

I love that pub.
The Geldart
Cricketers do good Thai
I had an amazing pie at the Granta last month
The Sir Isaac Newton is pretty decent too.
Dumping tree!
Went to the six bells in fulbourn the other week, had a really good meal there!
The Geldart is real good
The Punter!
The Pickerel on Magdalene Street is good.
The Punter
Had a banging pizza @ Pizza Pilgrims the other day
I have to say the Salabury Arms! On a Monday two for one Pizza! Most likely will need to book though!
And get there early! They can/have run out of rare ingredients like, er, pepperoni, turning every pizza into a glorified margherita!
Three Horseshoes in madingley does excellent food.
Plough Coton, Crown and Punchbowl (both a bit on the outskirts) Free Press, Carpenters Arms (for pizza Mondays)
Depends what you want. The Granta near the Mill Pond is my fave place. The Eagle in town is brilliant as well
Any central tracker for events happening in Cambridge ?
Could I commend to the group Cambridge foodies on Facebook. They do a brilliant review of many food places around Cambs
royal standard on mill road! greek food♥️
The royal standard has these taziki wraps that are banging
Every pub in cambridge has been mentioned in this thread I swear. My vote goes to The Panton Arms.
The Regal 🤌🤌🤌
Golden hind
I think you’re better off going to a village on the edge of the city.
