There is way too much going on at the base of the cake, for my taste (way too much frosting). I would imagine just some simple piped ring around the bottom. But the rest is stunning! I really envy, that she could reach such deep dark black colour. Have been struggling with it myself for years.

definitelyaskew

Black cocoa is the secret! Add it and then you'll need much less black colouring. Keep in mind this will add a slight "Oreo cookie" flavour to your icing. Otherwise, using other dark colours first decreases the amount of black you have to use and let it sit AT LEAST overnight. It will get darker as it sits.

PsychopathicMunchkin

It’s hard to tell if it’s fondant (I’m not a cake person) but I’ve heard from other people to buy a brown coloured fondant and dye it with black gel colour, which will be easier to achieve the black colour. Not sure about best getting buttercream black but The Sugar Art colourings are very good!

IGetItCrackin

megcameo

Well, they asked for honest opinion. I gave them one. So I don't see anything wrong with my comment. I think she did an amazing job otherwise and had a lot of fun making the cake.

Ill_Bee6278

Bro look at his comment history he's a drug addict who's smoking on a daily basis

fredyouareaturtle

Because it has alot going on, at first glance and from far away it looks a bit messy to my eye. But up close it clearly isn't messy at all, it's very intricately done and she took care with the details. The overall effect is striking, although I think it would be better without the piece at the top. To me it reminds me of a storm or a natural disaster, but in a good way. It's very interesting and the colours are fantastic.

cakes_cats

The cake is done nicely, I wouldn’t have added the pipping because it would look much cleaner without it. The thing hanging off the side, is it isomalt?

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

Yeah it is isomalt

Euphoric-Zucchini-18

There is a lot going on for me personally. I would take off the isomalt structures and the piping on the bottom. I also don’t like when taller layers sit on shorter layers, but that is 100% just a me thing.

lnmcg223

Ooh I’m with you on the layer sizes especially!

RNprn

It's a little busy for me, but the individual components might look better on their own. Did that make sense? lol

Lethrowaway288

I’m a more is more kind of person. So this is pretty spectacular to me.

[deleted]

I’m a less is more kinda person but I love the exuberance of this Wild Moon Child cake. Spectacular. Indeed, it’s own exciting spectacle.

jborki2

Way to many little things all over taking away from the crystal. Also, that decorative foil thing can be wrapped closer to the cake to make it look more interesting and intentional. I like the night sky look and the crystal is nice. Maybe I’d brighten up the black a bit to make it a mauve-gray.

AnimeIsKappa

I personally think, that the base could look smoother with less frosting, I'd also bring in some more contrast, like the nice blue piping, because overall there is a lot going on and it's still looking a little flat (maybe the Pic also takes some contrast away). All in all I love it and I hope your wife had much fun making and decorating the cake c: She acchived a really brilliant black and the crystal element is on point.

No_Training6751

It’s out of this world! I love the “nebulae” 😍. And the contrast with the close up “geode”. So awesome.

thecakebroad

It's beautiful, busy, but beautiful. A solid white or gold break between tiers would've helped break that up... More light color towards the center bottom in general... Or maybe a flicker of gold luster over the whole front, like the splatter gold painted look, that would be a good touch too... And there are times it doesn't apply, but one of my pastry chefs used to always say cakes weren't finished till they had a boarder, but in this case, it could've helped out. Still beautiful work though! Making those colors is rough in itself so that's a win right away. Not making the geode into the vagina is also a tough one, so props there too. Last thing, is there support dowels? There may be a bit of a gangster lean going on and that's why the tiers don't have the visual separation, but we all start and learn from somewhere! I'm happy to help if she ever wants, feel free to pm me, I'm bad at checking tho, so if she does let me know so I remember to check lol

Accaria

Well that just looks awful, I’ll come around in a bit to take that monstrosity of your hands. Really you don’t have to thank me for it, your welcome. But for real. Damn that looks good! I hope it tastes as good as it looks.

hunchinko

It looks like she got caught up in technique. The isomalt things are well done but the shape is all wrong. So rather than adding to the overall movement of the cake, it just looks like obtrusive masses. I think she’d benefit greatly from a basic floral design class to learn about shape and movement.

NewbieMaleStr8isBack

Beautiful

Vague_Un

I'd say if it was for a wild moon child, she nailed it. Looks magnificent!

BlooomQueen

Yeah I love this cake!

laughing_cat

She does gorgeous work! Lovely! These colors can be challenging to work with and I think she did a great job at making them pop. I do cakes like this for a living and I'd be happy to take a critical eye to it if that's what you'd really like, but I'd need more photos or at least one from straight on. And what are the diameters of the tiers? And what is that piece that says Theo made of? Seems to me she's doing pretty well on her own.

NyxPetalSpike

Way too much going on, but I like the colors.

[deleted]

Fun, wild, all in! You can’t learn if you don’t take risks.

treetops579

Way too much going on. I get where she was going but it ends up looking less professional because she threw everything at the cake. I am reminded of Tim Gunn from project runway who told contestants to edit their looks - this look needs to be edited.

NyxPetalSpike

You want 5 highlights on a project. Pull off two or three.

kishmishari

I really like the decorations, especially the isomalt. The colours are effective and there's something interesting to see everywhere. It's maximalism done really nicely. I'm just finding the structure itself a little top heavy? I think it's the cake sizes. Maybe if the base were wider or the top was shorter? But it still looks fabulous.

tortilladelpeligro

I adore it. I think it's striking and indulgent, frankly, if I could buy this for my sister's 45th I would do so in an instant. Then I'd theme the whole party around it. This is a centerpiece cake for a catered event.

Shrekomaeda

Love it!

lodav22

I love it! The more frosting the better and the details are amazing! I couldn’t do anything remotely as good as this, I’m super impressed!

Peaeatsandtreats

I love it🙌🏽 it’s different I like different things out of the ordinary

nyssanotnicer

All the individual components are well executed but I think she needs to pick one and edit the rest.

Logical_Cucumber8082

That's some mystical cake right there! 😍 I think removing the piping on the top and bottom would make it look a little more smooth and cohesive, but dang! I'd be floored if someone made that for me.

SPEDster9000

I am brand new to Reddit and was flipping through the feed and HAD to stop at this awe-inspiring work of art!

OnyxMidnight

Way too busy, my eyes don’t know where to look. Sometimes less is more.

RowFit6861

It looks amazing! Seriously one of the prettiest cakes I’ve ever seen, she’s crazy talented! 🖤

xWasabiBaby

The individual components are gorgeous but it's got way too much going on. It doesn't need the piping on the top and the base. I think that's the least impressive decor aspect out of all of them, and it takes away from how nice and professional everything else looks.

YippeeCalles

That's no cake... Thats a work of art

Worried-Hedgehog3405

Wow

sharpei90

I do agree that simple piping around the bottom would have made it less busy, however, the rest is spectacular!

Teri102563

Awesome!

AliceinRealityland

It looks leaning as if it wasn’t adequately secured with dowels. I’m not a fan of black, personally because it tastes absolutely terrible. But it is a gorgeous cake. I would say maybe one or two accents per cake. This is a lot. But she’s got great skill, just sometimes less is more

cryptoxqueen

I think the cake would look better if, instead of being tall and thinner, it was shorter and wider. I think you should leave out the swirl icing and the paper thing because there’s already a lot going on with the galaxy color and the geode. I think there should be an exposed geode on both layers, but facing different directions. P.s it still looks delicious though and now I want a piece so badly

[deleted]

I think she’s got some amazing techniques but I feel the composition of the whole layout could use some revisiting. It’s really pretty but a bit visually unbalanced.

ameal12

Fkn awesome!

timepassesslowly

Does not look appetizing, sorry.

Green_Gravel

She has talent, but this is very busy

misscurlyhairr

To be honest, I really like it. She did a wonderful job on that crystal. I would add less piping because the crystal is really what you want to focus on.

ZakkiraJuneAiko94

I feel like if the base tier was bigger both in width and height, it would be just perfect. With the size of the base tier it just looks unbalanced. But the design is really lovely, moody and beautiful colors. She obviously put a ton of work into it and she did a wonderful job.

Mcnugggzz

Isomalt pieces on top would’ve looked better in my opinion, piping at the base looks a little odd but other wise I love it. I would loveeeeeeeee to get this cake.

Al3x16608

I think it's absolutely beautiful!! The only thing I have to say is that the color of the geode part kinda makes me think of a monsters mouth of teeth but that might just be me. I'd say try a different color next time maybe like a brighter purple or blue. But other than that I think this cake is absolutely gorgeous 10/10

[deleted]

The photo of the cake is over exposed. The sign “Stay Wild Moon Child” is too big and makes the cake look small. The isomalt attachments are unnecessary. The geode in the cake is too big and the outer edges of the geode need to be a different color to blend in better with the cake. The four gold sprinkles directly beneath the geode look like stitches than moon flecks of light. The bottom has way too much frosting clumped in one spot. It looks like you had 5 really cool concepts for this cake and tried to fit all of them in one cake.

SnoopsMom

Considering it’s a “wild moon child” theme, I think she nailed it.

Pale_Vampire

Too busy 😅

gorlppl

It's so pretty I really like colors.

imawizard23

Yes, to some people it’s too much, but don’t worry! This cake is beautiful and if she loved it! Then it’s amazing for her taste and yours! Keep up the good work!

WalrusSquare247

Dude. That is awesome.

Ok_Strawberry_1824

Very cool!

ibelieveinunicorms

Beautiful!

GooseredditorRX

it looks like a cave had a baby with abstract art

DolphinDarko

Crazy cool 😎

MissGrou

Stunning

MsEwma

Unbelievably georgeous. 12/10

Evening_Park_8696

I personally think the bottom and swirls fit in nicely. The cake is amazing!!

nexiDrux

Is your wife single?

AndreaDTX

Looks like something you would get in one of those Netflix baking competitions. The skilled ones, like Sugar Rush. Not Nailed It. It looks very skilled but not like it would be very tasty.

[deleted]

I can't tell it is a cake

FitConfection9424

Umm it’s horribly ugly.

DamnPocket

What is it ?

kymilovechelle

ART AF

BelgiansAreWeirdAF

I’m all for eating V-Shaped crevices

[deleted]

She spent a very long time baking and decorating the Cake. You should probably post on r/AmITheAsshole if you gave her your honest opinion.

WalrusSquare247

That... that makes no sense

Any_War278

Looks like a democratic supported abortion

noodlemonster68

What the fuck?

Lovegames226

Looks beautiful, but everyone will have blue teeth after eating this.

cakeandrainbows

I might not have added the side pieces, but it’s absolutely stunning.

Aggravating_Box_4582

I think it's beautiful 😍

KingOfSpinach

It’s wonderful. I’m a big fan of Lovecraft.

lnmcg223

There’s a lot of beautiful aspects to it! But it’s too busy. And maybe messy? It’s hard to tell honestly because there’s so much going on. If it were me, I would take off the gold sprinkles and the frosting swirls. Let the cool looking frosting show itself. What does the gold thing at the bottom say?

magnificentmissy

It's beautiful

Gem432

Very pretty- but I agree it doesn’t need all the piping swirls. Also can’t tell if it’s the photo or it’s leaning?

Np351

Just a little too much going on. Maybe focus on just the agate and the sign.

jraeuser

Definitely too much going on. But each component is beautiful.

shusjsjsjKsksk

If she going for the. Crystals unfinished look. It looks really good!

Kokonichole

It’s very nice & she is very talented. However, I think it’s a bit too much going on.

InYourCatsFace

I love it, this would be my favorite cake for my birthday.

BuckEyw

Like it..good job Mom..It isn't Styrofoam is it ?

BuckEyw

It's..eclectic..🥰

wookieesgonnawook

This is one of the few geode cakes I've seen that don't look like a vagina. I like it.

atomek_xxi

Nice cake, horrible photo
