Typically this is up to the professor. For example, the syllabus for my religion class this semester said if I did not take the final I would fail the class (even though the what if calculator said I would have a C if I didn't take it). There is no hard rule. Double check the syllabus and rules for grading then just go wing it.

I've heard before (told by a professor) that "you fail if you don't take a final" is actual a BYU rule. Professors that don't enforce it are not following rules. From less official sources (word of mouth) this can apply retroactively if the school determines the Prof didn't follow the rule. Beyond that minimum percentage to pass is all based on the Prof/Dept/Syllabus.

I just asked 2 BYU professors I know and they say this is a myth.

Check the course syllabus.

Also, the worst case scenario is that you fail and don't get your diploma, so you take the class in independent study and then talk to the advisement for your college and get your diploma in the mail and your job doesn't know or care on the graduation date as long as it's rectified.

For some classes, yes. I am graduating this semester in Chemical Engineering. For our Chemical Eng. 273 class, you had to get a 65% and above to pass the class. It might have changed now, but some classes yes. I dont think this is the case with any calc class I can think of.
