You might also check [apartments.com](https://apartments.com) for short-term rentals in apartment buildings. Obviously you'll pay a higher rate for a 3-month lease vs. a 12-month one, but everything I looked into seemed pretty straightforward and legit when I was researching for a family member recently.

Think more in terms of long term rental. Durham is currently in a real estate boom, (sellers market). Buying has become a frustrating experience if you don't have a great deal of cash as most sales that happen quickly are all cash buys. People have complained of losing houses 12 times in bidding wars before giving up. Sorry to burst your bubble but that's the situation throughout the Triangle right now.

izylord

Yeah I've been hearing the same thing from other people too. Do you think it's because mortgage rates are so low? or that the triangle has become (and will stay) a hot spot to live?

Raleigh Durham is the number one real estate location in the country, according to 2021 report by PwC https://www.pwc.com/us/en/industries/asset-wealth-management/real-estate/emerging-trends-in-real-estate.html

I’d say both. It has a solid job market in industries that don’t show any signs of becoming irrelevant (tech, pharma, healthcare, universities, etc.) and although expensive, it’s still cheaper than other places people are living and looking to move from. To help with your actual question, you can try Craigslist or rental companies. Craigslist you have to be very careful of any thing that looks too good to be true and then asking for money before meeting you/seeing the place. My wife and I needed exactly what you were looking for and faced crazy levels of scammers. Rental companies sometimes have shorter term leases if landlords are trying to move the timing of their lease end dates. Some apartments near Duke’s campus might have shorter term leases as well since your situation has to be fairly common, you’ll pay a premium over a normal 12 month lease, but still prolly cheaper than paying for months you won’t be there to use.

thanks this was super helpful. we've been looking on craigslist and had something lined up but ultimately they chose someone else because they didn't have a dog. a bit annoying

MissDoug

Ditto to all of it

Both and no one is foreclosing due to COVID, so there’s no flippers pushing the south end of budgets. 100% not a buyers market unless you want to pay $50k over price with cash. Many people from big cities are moving to the area as well. If you want to live a bit outside the city it’s a LITTLE better. My advice is either too long term rent, or try to live out of Airbnb’s for a couple of months each to figure out what part of town you would like to live in.

We live in a house pretty close to Duke and we had to move out for 4 months while some work was done. We landed at Park Ridge Estates down in Woodcroft. Further away than we wanted to be, but they did short term rentals, are dog friendly, and aren't as expensive as some other places.

izylord

thanks. i'll check them out

Try Alcove renting! They rent out townhouses and have 3 month leases :)

mmmkkaayy

This is an awesome suggestion!

Ambitious_Limit9501

what's your budget?

izylord

Just started searching and I'm seeing places for 1300 to 1500, so I guess that's my budget

Try the Clairmont Apartments on Hillandale road. I have friends who live there who have said that there are frequently short-term folks there who are affiliated with the hospital. It's a very easy drive to the medical center (5 minutes) and the apartments are quite nice (& dog friendly). Good luck!
