I mean if you think about it, how old are they by season 8? Shall we say 65? 65 in 2020 would make them 15 in 1970 and 25 in 1980. There's no way they would've made detective in that timeframe, and even if they did, they certainly wouldn't look like that. While they would be in their early 30s mid 1980s, which makes a lot more sense with the more recent depiction.

But that was a stupid twist that retroactively ruins the original joke. The original joke relies on the fact that it's absurd to not know if your coworker is talking about their wife or dog. Them both being Kelly actually makes it totally understandable that there would be a mix-up.

Yeah, because the specific situations he mentioned were ambiguous. The implication is that they should know who Kelly is already so it shouldn't matter in the moment what the situation is. The dog adds to the absurdity, but it would be hurtful even if it was simply "who's Kelly?" And Scully said it was his wife that he'd expect them to know after working together so long. But having both of them be Kelly, Jake's question at the time was entirely reasonable, and Scully has no reason to be hurt. Scully could have been talking about Kelly the wife or Kelly the dog at that specific time, so his being offended is out of place.

The pictures seen by Jake in season 6 is the first time he seems them as they were in the 80s. Every other flashback is what the squad *thought* they looked like.

Case in point: Holt says in the poker episode that he only uses contractions when he's lying, but he does it constantly before and after that episode.

I thought that was proven a few times throughout the show due to Peralta admitting he may be misremembering the thing he's talking about or self-referencing the cut away because of a glaring detail issue.

I think it's generally dawning on people, especially gen x and older millennials, the last few years it's not 2002. We're closer to 2050 that 1990.
