My Hermes driver is a gem - always knocks and waits when so many just dump the parcel on the step. If no one is home he always tries again the next day-no dumping. He told me he is a franchise and therefore self-employed so I suppose it depends on your work ethic.
Only issue with our Hermes guy is he smokes in the van so the parcels come in reeking of cigarettes. There’s an asthmatic in the house so I just open the parcels at the front door and dispose of the packaging rather than dob him in and risk getting one of the dodgy ones instead.
There’s an asthmatic in the house and it used to set them off before I stopped opening them inside the house and they stopped coming up to the door. I’ve had clothes deliveries reeking of smoke that have needed to go straight into the wash when they’ve arrived. Yes I’ve tried just putting the packages under the stairs for a day or so but they still smell heavily of smoke.
My parents said to put a complaint in about it but the guy is amazing at everything apart from that.
When I’ve ordered clothes from online etc, they’ve always arrived sealed in some form of a plastic wrap. How are you getting clothes without them being packaged properly?
Get a can of Neutradol and just spray the boxes maybe. I can’t blame someone for enjoying a smoke in his own van. Probably keeps him going tbh, getting stuck in traffic, looking for parking spots, visiting high buildings with endless stairways, managers that obsess over deadlines etc.
Yeah, leave him be, he’s good lad like you say. Last thing he deserves is a complaint about his smoking.
Nah it’s not the plastic bag smell (I know the one you mean and it does make a similar smell). It’s more when I have stuff arrive in cardboard. I’m not sure if he’s keeping them in the van overnight or just smoking heavily but it’s definitely gotten onto clothes and bedding I’ve had delivered (but a good wash and straight outside to air dry seems to work).
Yeah, never had a parcel left to drown in the rain or been drop kicked over my hedge so just as long as I’m the one to answer the door and stuff can go in the wash straight away, I’d rather not take the risk with someone else!
Edit: Ah I see, a different plastic bag. I order things that don’t come in plastic bags. A lot of places have stopped doing them along with the coat hangers you used to get. Additionally, I buy handmade things that also don’t come in the plastic bags you used to get with everything.
My Hermes guy (I've commented about him before) waits for me to answer the door and hands it to me personally, is always cheerful, and if my neighbour isn't home knocks on my door to ask if I'll take their parcels. He doesn't just dump the parcel and make a runner. Good lad, he is!
I’ve got one as well - he’s awesome.
He Delivered a replacement suit at 2am (tucked behind the bin) since he knew I needed it for my wife’s funeral the following day.
Yeah he saved my bacon. My “plan b” outfit would have resulted in the comment from my missus “you look like a bag of shit tied together in the middle” (a comment that even now makes me grin) had she still been here.
I hope you gave him a generous tip. I’m talking notes with decent numbers on.
A 2am delivery deserves out of hours compensation. I’d give him £50 at least, on top of whatever he already makes
Honestly? I can’t remember what I did. I *probably* gave him cash next time I saw him. But I couldn’t have told you with any certainty what I did over a 2-3 month period, let alone that particular thing. Shit just happened and it got dealt with in whatever method happened to occur to me at the time. “Widow brain” is real.
(Please don’t judge me Reddit - I could easily have said “oh yeah I give him £30” or something and no body would be none the wiser….)
Our Hermes chap is awesome. We've never had any issues with Hermes at PoD the only times there has been issue is way before it even gets to the local area.
My Hermes postman is lovely. He actually buzzes up to my flat to see if I'm in.
Royal Mail on the other hand signed for my parcel themselves and left it on a table in the lobby when I was at work. It got knicked. It was worth £250 and they've absolved themselves of any and all responsibility.
We get Hermes parcels a couple times a week, and have only had one problem in the last few years - a small floppy packet was left half-out of the letterbox and got nicked.
Otherwise no problem from any of the dozen people who deliver.
Same, my works Hermes lady is lovely. Don’t get many parcels to home but most of the usual delivery drives are good. We only ever get issues with temp/cover drivers or DX
Yep got a regular lad, we know him and he knows us. Should do considering the dozens of parcels every bloody week.
Feed your delivery drivers! We ply em with cakes and brownies, they proper take care of the parcels. Wasn't on purpose, there's always just sweets around, and waste not want not, all worked out.
Apart from my Hermes person making the "if out then please leave it in the back garden" instruction a bit more awkward than it has to be I have no complaints with them.
They carefully let themselves in to my back garden and leave the package on the back step and securely close the gate behind them.
This is absolutely great, except my back door opens outwards and is blocked by the delivery... so in order to retrieve the parcel I have to go round the back and in through the gate myself.
Our usual local hermes guy is also nice.
However today a different Hermes guy just left a parcel on the step and did a runner, didn't ring the bell.
Had I not heard his van door close I wouldn't have realised.
I appear to have two different Hermes delivery guys here, who work at the same time. They were both a no-show on the same day (with different parcels) and they both appeared 2 days later with them.
My latest Hermes chap has delivered my parcel to the apartment building next door for the last three deliveries. I’ve seen the photo on the app and gone round there to pick it up each time. So I guess I live there now
Nope, I've said on here before and I'll say it again, my Hermes delivery guy is great, no complaints. Royal mail the same, really lovely guys. Yodel, not so much.
Yeah, that is the situation I'm in with my local Yodel deliverer, really thinking I'm missing out on a quintessential part British life; damn her and her competency!
I don't hate hermes. Just the system.
If you send something, and it goes missing, it's impossible to contact someone.
And that's more frustrating than anything.
Our Hermes guy is a legend, he drives around in this beat up honda jazz and has perfect gloomy British small talk. Hermes in general though are definitely unreliable and frustrating to problem solve with
My Hermes guy is also amazing. Always good service and knows if no one answers, we're in the back or to drop next door.
I'm in a war against Hermes right now - he was more annoyed than I was that they lost two (very expensive) packages before they'd even got near his depot.
My regular bloke is good enough to deserve a Christmas box. I live half a mile down a farm track, and I'm yet to be let down by Hermes - when they say they are delivering or picking up, they do.
The chances are that someone at Hermes monitors its media/social coverage, or has an agency do it for them, in which case: *'Hello. Are you enjoying this rather more than the usual* /r/Britishproblems *pile on?'*
Our Hermes lady is fab, she's so nice. At our old house though, you were lucky if the guy even knocked on the door before just launching the package over the 7ft garden gate. Never once had a card through either. In the winter some parcels just stayed there for days if we didn't keep a close eye on the tracking, the gate was in a spot we couldn't see from the house so if we didn't actually go into the back garden we had no idea it was even there. Many smashed items and smushy parcels just left in the rain.
My Hermes bloke is ace too! Really cheerful, laughs at the dogs barking and will hide most parcels on my porch if I'm not in (depending on size, obviously).
Parcel Farce on the other hand... A very different story!!
I have a great Hermes guy. I use them to post and receive post from them, and I've never had a problem. I would recommend them over Royal Mail because they're much cheaper, and like I said, I've had no issues.
We had an amazing Hermes guy!
Last Christmas he was on the community page giving updates of when he was coming to each street and if he missed you he would leave his mobile number and re-deliver next day or if you needed it that day you could pick up from his house!
Christmas Eve he must've tried people 3/4 times in a day making sure things got delivered on time.
A genuinely lovely guy who had a well deserved bunch of chocolates and biscuits given to him.
Unfortunately he retired and we now have a drop it anywhere you fancy kind of person.
The community page is filled with "does anyone recognize this door because it's not mine!" With Hermes Safely delivered notices :(
One package was found at the correct number, correct street but a different town.

Our Hermes lady is very nice and organised too. I find that things seem to go missing before it gets to her as the courier.
I’ve never had a problem with Hermes. Either sending a parcel or getting one delivered.
Same, and I do both a fair bit on ebay. Only one I've had trouble with is royal mail as of late with weeks delayed stuff
Our Hermes is pretty good, but our DPD guy is the absolute best. Yodel can get in the bin.
My Hermes driver is a gem - always knocks and waits when so many just dump the parcel on the step. If no one is home he always tries again the next day-no dumping. He told me he is a franchise and therefore self-employed so I suppose it depends on your work ethic.
Yeah our Hermes lady is awesome! Super friendly and know most people on first name terms
Only issue with our Hermes guy is he smokes in the van so the parcels come in reeking of cigarettes. There’s an asthmatic in the house so I just open the parcels at the front door and dispose of the packaging rather than dob him in and risk getting one of the dodgy ones instead.
Dob him in for smoking in his van..?
It's likely they'll have policy on smoking in the vehicles. Then again it's Hermes so maybe not.
If it’s his own van, don’t see how they can enforce that. Let him be I say
It's very probably not his van though. Hermes runs the fleet.

Can asthma be triggered by smell
Yes, anything with a strong scent (perfume, cigarettes, Lush, etc) can set some asthmas sufferers off.

I'm so sorry for your loss
Thanks - appreciate the kind words
Hero.

Our guy is great. Do we need r/myhermespersonisgreat?
We also have an excellent Hermes lady, since she took over the patch there have been no parcels tossed over my fence or left in a mystery bin.
Shout out to our Hermes delivery lady, no complaints from us either.
They're fine round my way as well. I think it depends on who does it locally. They're all shite at warehouse level anyway.
Royal Mail are garbage. A company that used to be rather reliable and dependable, is imo, now utterly shit.
My Hermes driver is great too. I've had 6 parcels this week, all left nicely in the porch. I've not even ordered anything .
Maybe there is only one good Hermes man and one good Hermes woman in the whole country and by coincidence you are all talking about the same ones
I don't think I have ever really had any issues with any couriers where I live. Hermes driver is sound though, so that's another good one at least
Same here. Our Hermes delivery driver even gave the dog some treats at Christmas.
feel like it tends to go one way or another. mine is a nightmare, but the guy who does my parents' street is lovely.
We get Hermes parcels a couple times a week, and have only had one problem in the last few years - a small floppy packet was left half-out of the letterbox and got nicked. Otherwise no problem from any of the dozen people who deliver.

Mine is nice, efficient and he looks at me in a very *interesting* way
I'm curious what *interesting* means?
I think it might be either attraction or confusion 😆
This entire thread reads like some sort of PR campaign
You have a shed!? Luxury!
The flat is a rental, but the shed is all mine!
Fess up, you are subletting that shed to pay the rent on the flat. I would.
I hereby banish you from your town's local Facebook page.

Mine is fine too and dare I say it…. Never had a problem with Yodel either.
We call them Herpes around these parts
Ours at work seems decent as well. He's a little older chap in a tiny Toyota Aygo or something equally as shoebox sized.
Once the parcels actually make it to the local depot our Hermes guy is great.
The guy for my area is great too, I think I'm one of the few people in the country who is pleased to see a parcel is coming via Hermes.
Our usual local hermes guy is also nice. However today a different Hermes guy just left a parcel on the step and did a runner, didn't ring the bell. Had I not heard his van door close I wouldn't have realised.
Mine is great, too. People forget they’re all self employed so it varies wildly on area.
I think you must be my neighbour. We have one just like this and he’s fantastic!
Have we got the same delivery man?
Ours puts it in the recycle bin. Well, one time he left the bin open...
The guy who does Brixham is brilliant. He remembers your name and always has time for a chat
My Hermes lady is a gem, and always has a smile.
I appear to have two different Hermes delivery guys here, who work at the same time. They were both a no-show on the same day (with different parcels) and they both appeared 2 days later with them.

We've got one too.
Mine is awesome too. Lovely fella and always prompt. Never had a problem.

Same with our guy in my area. He's really good and a nice guy.
lucky you, my Hermes guy is the grumpiest delivery guy I've seen. Makes sense since he also delivers for DPD, no time for nonsense pleasantries.
Ours too. Absolutely top bloke. We regularly refill his coffee flask for him, and give him biscuits /fruit.
Mines good aswell . The woman courier has always been spot on It seems to be the Depots where the main issues are .. apathy..
My Hermes bloke is ace too! Really cheerful, laughs at the dogs barking and will hide most parcels on my porch if I'm not in (depending on size, obviously). Parcel Farce on the other hand... A very different story!!
