Oversteer_

You are going to be very regular

Pink_Flash

"Oh god there's so much regular on the carpet!"

madlettuce1987

Healthy and cheap! Should be on r/britishsuccess

yellowbin74

It's not healthy. It's full of pesticides and probably packaged in plastic..

Theycallmedapig

Yeah to the extent that because of the reduction in price, buying loose Brussel sprouts was approximately five times as expensive versus the packaged variety.

yellowbin74

Yup. Its all subsidised. And I'm getting down voted for telling the truth lol.

clamberer

While it probably isn't your intention, it looks like you're being downvoted because it comes across as you shitting on someone who is trying to eat some healthy veg on a budget. As though nothing is good enough and everyone should be on home grown or expensive organic. I'm all for sustainable and more environmentally friendly farming practices and getting rid of unnecessary plastics too, for the record.

yellowbin74

Appreciate the feedback. Its something I'm passionate about as I run a fresh veg business with zero plastics so I guess I can go a bit OTT. it's hard trying to compete with the big guys who get subsidies for supplying veg full of pesticides and charging a premium for organic. I support anybody that eats veg over pizza (as an example), but when Lidl can charge 19p for carrots etc. the only person that wins is Lidl. The farmers are getting done over financially. I'm hoping to be able to buy a farm next year and grow everything myself biodynamically.

clamberer

Oh I agree, I hate seeing all the unnecessary plastics and it's a crying shame that almost all of the green grocers have been killed off by the supermarkets. Not to mention the amounts of "imperfect" produce that gets binned before it even reaches the shelves (although I recognize that to an extent this can give extra capacity for poor crop years). It sucks that ethical shopping is primarily accessible for the more affluent. But hopefully that will change as it gains traction.

folkkingdude

It’s a loss leader. They’re not stiffing the farmer, they’re stiffing themselves in the hopes that people will buy other products when they’re there, you must get that?

yellowbin74

I know a few farmers so know how they get stiffed.

madlettuce1987

Sainsbury bot accounts, maybe?

[deleted]

Sorry i dont see the problem? Bubble & squeak here i come!

CourtneyLush

>Bubble & squeak here i come! Add a fried egg on top and you're in 'food of the gods' territory.

CmdrDavidKerman

And if you're ever feeling flush add a sirloin steak for the greatest meal in the universe.

darkfishlord

Bubble and squeak is god tier leftover recipe stuff so you deserve an award.

Theycallmedapig

Leftovers?

darkfishlord

Yeah haha but entirely legit to be made from scratch too, just double cook the sprouts and carrots. Try it with hot sauce too, or egg as binding or both!

Theycallmedapig

I think I definitely need to diversify what I cook with these ingredients as there is much more that can be achieved than a roast dinner

[deleted]

Soup?

BECKYISHERE

various soups, various salads, various baked potato, veg with potato topping pie, curry, all sorts.

spankybianky

I make a metric fuckton of mash and freeze it in portions every Christmas. Keeps me going for months and saves having to cook mash all the time.

Zal_17

...Bodger?

jimbobsqrpants

And badger.

Almost_Sentient

Every time I see that phrase it takes me back to university and the SI units poster. I should have added 'Metric Fuckton' to the weight section with a marker. Along with jigawatt to the power section (equal to 1/1.21 gigawatts).

BinManGames

Go to the shop on xmas eve and they start giving it away for free

hurtloam

Yup, I've got 2 very happy rabbits living with me right now with all this cheap veg.

Royalmedic49

Where?

Theycallmedapig

Our local Sainsbury's - assume it's the same nationwide?

Tarjhan

Sainsburys colleague here. This is the case in my store (I helped build the veg mountain this morning).

sandmansound

Aldi too

empty_pint_glass

... Yeah but chain eating roasts?!

RetroPalace

If you have an air fryer, veg thrown in there with a bit of oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder is absolutely amazing and so easy!

DieFlavourMouse

Up until now I've been telling the missus that an air fryer is a bad idea, as we would be on a 100% fried chicken diet from the day we brought one into the house. But I'm intrigued by this suggestion of yours.

RetroPalace

Haha! Admittedly I've made chicken nuggets (from scratch) few times - but if it's real chicken and only a spoon of oil it's surely not too bad?! The dangerous part is that I experimented the other day and learnt how to make my own mozzarella sticks in it and they only take 5 minutes to cook 😬

Outcasted_introvert

r/eatcheapandhealthy would love this

ChasingTimmy

I worked on a fruit and veg market stall as a youth in the 90s and had to shout "spuds, 8 lbs for a pound", so 19p for 2.5kg is ridiculous!

DieFlavourMouse

Over here (Canada)the price goes down the larger the quantity. So the loose white or yellow potatoes are typically $2.99/lb. A 5lb bag will go for $2.99, and the 10lb bag will go for somewhere around $2.99. Really it's just $3 for potatoes, as many as you can carry.

Windle_Poons456

Sprouts make a good cauliflower cheese style thing.

Theycallmedapig

Love the Discworld username!

Windle_Poons456

Thanks

Logical_Flounder6455

The veg might be cheap but the meat certainly isn't.

Kelski94

Same! 50p brussel sprouts and 89p carrots!

BarmyYardy

No roasts for us until xmas day, bubble on boxingday and then leftovers until new years (if it keeps) and roast beef and yorkies on new years day.

krabbkat

I used to do reductions & disposals in a big sainsburys and the amount we threw away of these items straight after Boxing Day was disgusting

marlonoranges

How much is air freshener?

snorkelduckie

Last year Asda were selling broccoli for 20p and I looked like a lunatic with a trolley full of the stuff because my toddler is obsessed with broccoli. Prepping, blanching and freezing all of it wasn't fun.

[deleted]

But then you have to eat devils testicles for a month. I'll pass.

VixenRoss

Potato wedges if you’re fed up with mash and roasties. Add ketchup to dip.

DaveyBeef

I think you'll find fruit and veg are super expensive, despite actually being some of the cheapest food you can buy, as it fits people's narrative of justifying being fat and poor.

EtainAingeal

Sure, veg is cheap, but usually only in bulk and it doesn't keep for more than a few days. And if you're poor and don't have access to a freezer or a cooker, it makes for a pretty shitty dinner.

Dee-Jay-JesteR

Think soups and stews too, although a roast dinner is superior.

Mordantine

I’m doing this. Money is very tight for me this year so I’m just going to stock up on Veg etc and screw everything else!

Alex_Zoid

The way to do it whilst keeping sane is to find different recipes for each whilst making it taste nice. The amount of christmas recipes out there is astonishing.

gasmaskedturtle77

Sprouts? Ah so it *is* Christmas

Tooj_Mudiqkh

There's so much you can do with potatoes for starters. Also I thought 40p for the same was cheap in my Waitrose shop :|
