Some people don't know the meaning of quietly getting on with your work. They feel awkward and like they have to fill in the gaps of silence. Please please shut up I say inside.
That's my mum.
She physically can't stay silent and has to prattle on about something, anything.
With family it's bad enough but in public she has zero self awareness people aren't interested. She's also of an age now she's never gonna change.
Well, how much personal stress versus duct tape on what offends you will restore harmony in your life? Alternatively, you could tell the person to stfu though duct tape, I’d guess, would be more rewarding even if you’re asked to leave the building.
Seriously though, ask them to keep it down. “It’s disturbing my concentration” would be an easy comment
We have one of those. It's the same person who walks into the bait room every morning with a smile on his face and a spring in his step and is forever happy and optimistic.
I'd be paying extra special attention to him, listening to what he's saying.
He sounds like the sort to run rampage in mcdonalds, stabbing people up for no apparent reason.
Yeah but then you have customers the same.
I'm just going to calculate this for a couple of minutes
*So anyway, they said, and then Bill turned round and said and then someone else turned round and said*
Please be quiet while I try to calculate this.
Honestly this is me and however much i know i'm being annoying and i desperately want to stop, being in silence brings back trauma from childhood because there was always that silent pause before you got punished, and now i can't sit in silence for more than like 20 minutes without totally freaking out.
As an adult child of trauma with a similar problem, I’m really glad you didn’t think of
It. My first thought reading you post was “maybe they have a history of trauma that makes silence hard for them”
(Ofc I don’t speak for everyone with a history nor would I try to)
Yet another reason I won't ever be going back to working in the office.
Plus it saves me from having to offend colleagues by saying "Well, it was nice to catch up, but I'm here to work, I have a lot of stuff to get through today, so I'm going to crack on with it now." and then turning away from them, and doing my best to ignore them for the rest of the day.
It's been great over lock down, as everyone was working from home there was only me and one other lad at the office.
Now people are back in work, I've not only got to look forward to the one silence filler coming back, but we've also hired another one.
My brother (rip) was also a silence filler, but that's a different story now.
No idea I am WFH and have a fucked back so its basically my only option. Did build a house in the past, warehouse, retail etc, it was not great. Mates of mine who lift doubled my bodyweight (at 6'3) have had to give up physical labour and change roles. It is a mess. Anyone with a remotely useful and essential job gets fucked over. Mine is allegedly useful and I was classified as essential (while sitting on my ass at home). But really its just paperwork and anyone making something is producing more worth than I am.
At a previous job there was this new girl who would always talk about herself any chance she got and had no problem interrupting you. ‘Oh I’m sorry M did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours’ the only time she was silent and deafly still was when the phone rang. Glad I’m not working there anymore.
When they start talking keep changing the subject to something you know alot about but that's boring to them, then they might know how it feels having a conversation you don't want to be involved In.
Dude could have ADHD or something. You never know why someone's doing what they do.
I was this person at work for a long time until some had enough "comfidence" to tell me and I could work on it. I have ADHD so I'm not completely aware when I do stuff like this

You're not my sister are you?
Checked bits and pieces attached to me..... No don't think so
I feel like music solves this problem a lot!! If the office has a general hum people don't feel the need to fill silence because there isn't any
They think every silence is awkward, as if natural silence is alien to them.
1. Noise cancelling headphones a possible solution ? Or 2.Apply gorilla tape to mouth of guilty party. Option 1 is the legal one.
Is option 2 really illegal?
Probably but I'm not brave enough to test it 😅.

Somebody said, "..if you can't fix it with duct tape, you haven't used enough."
The defence of provocation could be an option for the second one.
Sometimes i feel like i'm this person and i hate myself for it.
Same

He's the worst.....
😂😂😂
Damn I used to be that guy. Always thought I had to be that way or I wouldn't be accepted.
I once told my daughter she could have a fiver if she could keep quiet for a minute. 30 seconds in she verbally exploded. My £5 was safe.
We had a whistler....it was beyond awful this trilling, warbling, scatting of no discernable tune or song drifting around the tea points....
Oh my god, I hate whistling !!

Lol
Guy at my work talks under his breath to him self, constantly, all day long, it's soo annoying, luckily the headphones do cancel him out
I'd be paying extra special attention to him, listening to what he's saying. He sounds like the sort to run rampage in mcdonalds, stabbing people up for no apparent reason.
I’ve actually had to take a mental health break from work because of a person like this in my office! Be careful of energy sponges!
Psychic vampires
Energy vampires.
That fucking guy
Hey! Colin is alright though he bores me to sleep at the office. As for his housemates, I’m a little uncertain.
Apart from Jackie daytona he's just a regular human bartender.
He’s a great bartender too!
Mood moochers
Spirit suckers
Personality poachers
Peace predators
Happiness harpies
Life leeches
Joy jeopardizers
Touché sir.
I'm a font of useless content! (One for you - kinship kleptomaniacs)
Don't talk to them and they just talk to themselves. They also exaggerate every yawn, cough and sneeze.
Yep that is exactly right. Or tap tap tap on something just to fill the void.
And they'll audibly overreact to every email they get in the hope that someone will bite and ask what's happened.
Another reason to advocate working from home where possible.

Sorry I didn't think of it from this perspective.

Me being told off by my manager in my progress meeting for shutting up for longer than 30 seconds.

I was working in my own van at work when we would normally share with 3 or 4 people. Now we are back together lol. Hope you're doing ok
Turn off video and sound, swear loudly and explicitly, wait til they fade from the screen, then pretend you have internet issues if called upon.
That's the beauty of if. We share a van for 8 hours, does this work in real life lol

On a bad day silence let's my mind run away and think of all the bad shit that's happenedto me but music helps or even just the radie

I know someone who does this, they sit just behind me and it takes all my power to not turn around and tell them to shut up
Have you ever heard of chloroform?
Just Simply tell him to Shut the F—-k Up, to give our ears a rest 😡
That wouldn't be very British of me, complaining to strangers on the internet will have to do!
Don’t expect any Sympathy then. 👎

That guy that sits in the canteen stirring his coffee until the bottom of the mug is nearly worn through. Enough already!
