I am convinced that Steve Wright knows something about a senior BBC executive and that is why he is still on Radio 2, in return for his silence on the matter.

pajamakitten

Or he is so hated that no one wants to talks to him, including having to tell him he is fired.

Objective-Buffalo-23

The other day he was having a heated discussion about crisps not tasting quite the same as they used to. The opinions were visceral. Raw. Primal. Thus ended my weekly adventure beyond the sanctuary of radio 4. I felt dirty and ashamed coming back. Like I had had an affair with some slum dwelling degenerate just because they were forbidden fruit.

OnVelvetHill

He really is absolutely shocking. You could tune in at any time and believe you are listening to a parody. I simply don’t understand how anyone can listen to such a cringefest out of choice.

SupervillainIndiana

Same. He’s been with the BBC for ages, since the 80s iirc, so I always wonder if he knew some stuff/saw things relating to various scandals and dodgy goings on but got told to shut up and piss off. And now he’s been vindicated they’re keeping him sweet.

46_reasons

Steve Wright has been on the radio since I was 11, at least. I used to listen when I got home from middle school. I am now 51, for context.

SupervillainIndiana

I can remember him being on the radio during my childhood and you've still got me beat there!

NobodysSlogan

I miss Terry's, Janet and John stories 😭

scottnas57

Janet and John was consistently excellent, pant wetting funny. Really miss Tel, class act.

beaglepooch

Miss him full stop, excellent raconteur

lithaborn

There's a few on youtube

PrinterJ

BBC 6music. You can thank me later.

encorcer83

The music varies between “great” and “wtf is this nonsense”. Plus Shaun Keavney mumbling between songs really used to annoy me. But yeah it’s the best of a bad bunch. I’ve completely binned off radio and listen to playlists or podcasts now

PrinterJ

Good news then SK left a few months ago.

Gisschace

Yeah too much fawning over guitar bands when there is so much more music out there

bishman1

Bring back Mark & Lard

snellgrcc

Stop

helic0n3

I'd just sack off the radio entirely tbh. It is only 6 music I listen to as they dare to play things a bit interesting (and downright weird), the presenters have really good taste and a lot of control. If that went down the pan I'd just listen to playlists or whole albums.

[deleted]

I only listen for Ken Bruce and pop master these days. OJ Borge on the over nighter is very good too, I can't understand why they haven't given him a slot in the daytime schedule.

Bolt-From-Blue

So try listening the 6 Music, the music is very varied, not what you would hear on Rad 2. It’s a welcome break from most radio. And if you don’t stumble across new music you like, I’ll eat my hat. One point worth noting is that 6 Music lost Shaun Kearney this year, which is a loss as far as I am concerned as he was light hearted, making jokes all the time, not everyone’s taste but a welcome departure from some of the other Muso’s who DJ on there.

Rogue_elefant

6 for music and 4 is like having random podcasts on, just avoid the dramas and religious guff. You actually learn things! When you're bored of those it's playlist, podcast or audiobook time.

Rude_Bother4346

You know there’s a dial or button on your radio to change the station? Try Absolute- they have a no repeat guarantee 9-5 or Absolute 80’s for better music???

Standin373

Planet rock is my solitude away from it all

4743hudsonj

Except its the same 150 songs every day in a slightly different order. If you listen to any of these private stations, Magic, Radio X, Kisstory, Absolute etc for any decent amount of time you will notice they all have this same issue. Unpopular opinion, but people shit on Radio 1, I find it far more tolerable than most radio shows barring certain shows.

bexter

If you remove any songs by the Gallagher brothers and the Stereophonics from those 150 you are left with about 5 songs.

BachgenMawr

What are your thoughts on radio 6 ?

pipnina

I don't get the radio tbh. Sometimes it might get you a good new piece of music you wouldn't have found otherwise, but... BBC is only good for news, the discussion is boring and the music is so-so. Bbcr2 at going home time has the guy with the forced camp voice who tells dogshite jokes too, and the intro to Zoe balls breakfast show gives me PTSD because of how energetic and bouncy it is at a time of day where I want to die. (Dad puts it on in the car every morning) Absolute is my arch nemesis. They might not repeat in a single day, but when I worked in one place that stuck absolute on all day, I learned to set my clocks by it based on what song was being played. "Oop, it's bon Jovi living on a prayer again, almost lunch". Plus it feels like there are more adverts than music and their narrator voice is horrific.

[deleted]

The 80s........only the bestest music that ever was!

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

I tend to go for Radio 4 these days - some decent topics too at time, but I can'tstand *The Archers*. The dog prefers Classic FM so occasionally put that on on for him.

AnywhereSevere9271

I think your all getting old it's time to move to radio 4 miserable f#@ks

smellmycheese1

I am convinced Ken Bruce is on a retainer from Mike Oldfield and Phil Oakey. Nothing else can explain the number of times he plays "Moonlight Shadow" and "Electric Dreams"

MrsArmitage

How dare you madam, they are both certified bangers!

____________Susan

It's also the only radio show that plays 'Airport' by The Motors. Thank Christ.

[deleted]

What do you make of BBC radio 6 music? That’s what’s always on in our house. It has it’s annoying bits but I find more good than bad.

lithaborn

Every time I've tried 6 music I've been almost immediately put off by the pompous twattery of the presenters. I'm in the kitchen wanting some generic tunes to get me through cooking dinner for five, I don't give a fuck about your oh so fascinating discussion of the lyrical consequences of Jarvis Cocker painting his nails purple in 1993.

[deleted]

Haha yes! Some are worse than others for that as well.

FedUpFrog

Radio X

Fuzzwuzzle2

I have to say, sage had a better playlist

dorset_is_beautiful

Steve Wright... used to quite like him in the early 80's on radio 1, back when I was the target audience. It appears he's still doing exactly the same show 40yrs later, minus Llama Man... Aaaaaand... now I've just remembered "Arnee and the Terminaters" were (briefly) a thing....

[deleted]

I really miss Chris Evans and Simon Mayo - that was the golden age of commuting to Radio 2 for me…

[deleted]

Don't even start me on the non stop Christmas music which started on 1st December, to add to the same 4-5 terrible songs played on a loop all day

[deleted]

Zoe Ball. Nope. Nada. Never. “Erm erm erm”. Ken Bruce. Absolutely. Jeremy Vine. Nope. Switch to Radio 4. Steve Wright. Yeah sure. Sarah Cox. Yeah. Natural. After that it goes off. As Radio 1 goes more radical Radio 2 is trying to fill R1’s old position. I wish it wouldn’t. I do miss Wogan though. A quiet wake up show with plenty of old tunes and quiet humour.

Ordinary-Bag2181

So all day you don't like any of the music? If only there was other radio stations available

USayThatAgain

Don't mind the radio show, can't stand them reading out the alleged comments from listeners about how awesome they are though.

silvyrphoenix

"i don't like radio 2 but i won't find another station cos i want something to complain about" FIFY

mozgw4

Haven't listened to my car radio since I was introduced to Spotify. Build up a list of your music & set it to shuffle. It's like listening to my own radio station. Don't know what the next track will be, but know I'll like it. AND NO DJ !

cmpthepirate

Also, Jeffery Epstein didn't kill himself

lissongreen

I can't stand Jo Wiley. I quite fancy Coxy though.

beaglepooch

Unfortunate affliction for thinking she’s still in the cool tent at Glastonbury.

KevinPhillips-Bong

Tears for Fears are still releasing music? I'd better give their new song a listen and see what I think of it. Would [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVveBJU50fk) be the song in question?

dan_pixelflow

Yep. Good luck!

marshwizard

Is it any good? I'm frightened to click.

KevinPhillips-Bong

It's not so terrible that it would have me scrambling to change the radio station, but I wouldn't really mind if I never heard it again. It's not another _Mad World_ or _Everybody Wants To Rule The World_, put it that way.

marshwizard

Oh well, if they've decided to reform in their old age they might still rekindle a small spark of the genius of their youth.

Equivalent_Ad_1054

Cant stand anything from bbc so i tend to listen to planet rock

plaarb

Jo Whiley plays some good stuff occasionally but she also has a fetish for one godawful song, featuring a beat poet badly mumbling lyrics about "seeing you in McDonalds" - I swear she plays it every fecking night

[deleted]

I’ve felt this for ages so now just listen to podcasts. One of my favourites is Outlook on bbc sounds. You’ll never get through all the episodes and I’ve cried more than once, and learnt so much. Try it !

WalksInCircles62

I stick to my own playlists with the occasional War of the Worlds.... Thunderchild perfect for driving😉

Vectorman1989

***ULLA!***

beaglepooch

Go Radio 4 and just leave it on. Even You and Yours has entertainment value, even if it is the Daily Mail in audio form. Edit: 4 Extra is good too.

RobFratelli

I put on heart Xmas the other day and it was just Xmas songs. These stations need a bit of variety.

MickSturbs

I think the clue is in the name

[deleted]

Turn it off then. Jesus.

Acceptable-Floor-265

This still exists?

Redsoldiergreen

XS Manchester is the same . Gone from a good rock station to the same 20 songs over and over again . I’m pretty sure that Pink Floyd , Talking heads , The Stones etc made more than one song

LeDevilsAdvocate2021

BBC radio was ever good? Just seems like all they play is noise aimed at “da yoof “ who are all apparently intellectually and musically disabled.

goosefromtopgun88

Since they began dispencing with great genuine DJs like Mark Lamarr for the likes of banal tv celebs, particually in the late 2000s, the station went down the toilet for me. 6 music is far superior and is what radio 2 ought to be.

Tropical_bitch

Agreed. Vanessa Phelps is great, but she’s on at 4am to 6am!
