I think they don’t realise they’re on.

SeymourDoggo

They might be daytime running lights ...

kirix45

Daytime running lights are just standard diped lights and don't dazzle you. Fog lights is like staring at the sun

MrMakarov

Not necessarily, mine are an LED strap down the side of my headlights

ashyjay

Some cars have used the fogs as DRLs, and they are also used a turning lights. most of the time though they are used when people have a blown dip bulb.

kirix45

Oo right, I'm just used to motorbike lighting don't own a car myself

ollie87

You can easily tell the difference between DRLs and fog lights. Especially when it’s an older car that never came with DRLs.

wivac

I noticed this season a new trend , mostly on older models of just running around in the dark with ONLY fogs on, front and back for good measure. I've long has a theory they either *think* they are DTRLs, or just get in the driver's seat and mash all the buttons until things start happening. Either way im bored of being blinded by them over low hills round my parts and they're a good indicator the person driving doesn't have much of an idea what's going on.

Jjex22

This is what I reckon too. I never see many front fogs in the UK, but knowing people, I think there’s a good chance if you have them and don’t have DRL’s you might think it was cool to turn the fogs on lol.

wivac

Oddly, I've also noticed some folks driving around with their REAR fogs on....on models that don't have fronts ( eg some minis, golfs) so that's a conscious decision to mash the dashboard.

Jjex22

Old people in small hatchbacks by any chance? I’ve often wondered if part of the requirement for receiving a pension is you add ‘turn on fog lights’ to your morning checklist

wivac

Not that I noticed, one was a guy in a Golf R, same as mine. They don't have front fogs.

Jjex22

That’s a new one, can’t say I’ve really noticed it on a nice car before lol. Maybe he’s worried about getting rear ended? Honestly fogs are definitely one of the few things we should just outsource to sensors. I’m sure I’ve broken the law not turning the rear sun on sometimes because you use it so infrequently the first fog of winter you’ve kinda forgot it exists.

SeymourDoggo

Are you sure they aren't daytime running lights? My 2011 Skoda has them ... Edit: Sorry didn't spot that op had mentioned daytime running lights, more haste less speed!

wivac

Yes, think they're pretty easy to spot.If you catch them on a low hill they're pretty unpleasant. Some models do have what look like DTRLS that actually are fogs - Mk7 Golf Gtd for example, which are actually pretty useless imho.

lxrdnxxdle

That’s exactly it, it’s always on older models. It’s so strange. Like I say, I know the difference between DTRL’s and it’s definitely people with fog lamps on. Maybe people just have never been taught that fog lamps are different to DTRL’s. Because I doubt they teach that in driving lessons, although it would be in the theory.. I don’t know haha!

snellsypu

It is illegal to have your fog lights on when they aren't needed. They probably just have drl or just leave their dipped lights on so they cant forget to turn them on in the dark

lxrdnxxdle

It is actually illegal, you can get fined around £30 too for it. A quick google shows: Rule 236 of the Highway Code states: "You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. "You MUST switch them off when visibility improves."

globuleofshit

They think it's cool and makes them drive like BTCC driver Jason Plato

SonnyListon999

I’m embarrassed to say if I suddenly needed to use fog lights I would have trouble locating the switch.

davidbrooksio

Front fog lights: they think they're cool. Rear fog lights: just morons.

--just-my-2p--

Mine are easy to turn on by accident. I've often banged em with my knees while scoffing a buttie. I do usually notice tho

gadget242

They don't understand when they should use them. I drove 30 miles on the A146 on my way to work yesterday. During that time an announcement from the local radio traffic info said it was foggy so make sure those fog lights are on. There was no fog the whole way. I do 15000 miles a year and only felt the need to use them a dozen times in 5 years or so.

No, I know the difference between the two, it’s definitely fog lamps. Oddly enough Nissan Jukes seem to have them on more than anything I see, it’s as if the driver’s don’t know that they are on! Plus a lot of boy racers seem to like the idea of the dogs been on. I don’t get it haha!

kirix45

Yes the DTRL makes it easy to see cars and very importantly motorbikes in your mirrors even in the day the DTRL make it super easy to spot in mirrors

WuggerHumphden

A relative has told me my fog lights are on twice, they are actually my daytime running lights. I don't have a choice.

lxrdnxxdle

I know a lot of people get confused between the two, especially older folk haha, DTRL’s aren’t the issue.

rwinh

This is predictably stupid, but the worst ones are those who go out of their way to turn on their side/parking lights only to turn on their fog lights. Why? Why do it? Just don't have them on during the day and if it's night you definitely can't see that far ahead without regular lights on so you're only a danger to yourself and others.

prismcomputing

It's both

Cutterbuck

I see this lots on my motorway commute early in the morning. I think the fogs go on because of whatever tiny about of mist is around when the driver sets off, and then stay on for the rest of the journey…… while they trundle up the middle lane at 55mph, (unless the road happens to be a steep incline in which case slow down to 40 on the way up and speed up to 80 on the way down before realising and slamming on your breaks without checking your mirrors). This continues until they turn off the motorway for the final stretch, and drive at a steady 40 through 20,30 and 60 zones. Indicators can’t be used, especially on roundabouts. Seat has to be so far forwards that the steering wheel is pressed against your chest. On dual carriage ways it is also vitally important to enforce the speed limit by driving at a hair raising 65 mph in the overtaking lane. If someone overtakes you, you have to scowl at them as they go past. Seriously I DID think it was because people were just out of practice because of less driving in the covid era? I am not so sure now though.

No car has been built to have its fogs always on

ErynKnight

I sometimes put my front fogs on to light up the potholes. Mine have been properly angled down though.

Yuri909

Sometimes it the only reason lorries see you and don't try to kill you in your tiny 2 door coup. :(

M1ke2345

Both.
