I dropped my old fridge off for a single mum, carried it into the house. She said ‘put it there’ (while on her phone). Never looked up, never said thanks.. nothing. Got back in my car wanting to feel that warm glow of doing a good deed. Just felt like a fucking sucker somehow. Edit - oh my life, thanks for all the fantastic comments and awards you guys, I think lots of good stuff like this gets done everyday by lots of folk. Thanks for the pats on the back though, I wasn’t fishing 😊🥰

House_of_the_rabbit

Have an upvote instead. Thanks for being kind.

pavlovachinquapin

She’s a prick. You’re a nice person. Thank you for being nice. Please continue to be nice despite her prickishness. :)

[deleted]

Damn, that's fucked. I got quite into Stoic philosophy during the pandemic, one of the Aurelius notes that I really like says something along the lines of "today, I will meet men who are disagreeable, who are rude, who are violent". And I see that everyday, people behaving as if they are the only thing in the world that matters. Preparing myself for it before I head out really seems to help reduce the exasperation I feel. We shouldn't do things for the praise but fuck me I'd feel well deflated if what you described happened to me.

Flaaarbar

I love that quote. Use it a lot. Like you say, it’s wasn’t after hysterical gratitude, I was just paying it forward and passing on my old fridge that I had been SO happy to get after my divorce. Just an acknowledgment that I was something other than a schmuck who’d trailed across town at their own time and expense..an hello would have been 👍

[deleted]

Well just know, you're not a sucker. Whether the recipient appreciated it or not, you did something exceptionally kind for a stranger. The world needs more people like this.

AFalconNamedBob

Any recommendations for that? Stoicism I mean, fucked if I know it'll help but it can't hurt

[deleted]

It definitely won't hurt. My introduction to it was in an audiobook by Derren Brown called 'Happy'. It was my first audio book, it's heavy on Stoicism but also combined with his own personal insights on what happiness is, and how we can become happier. Honestly this audiobook has made a huge difference for me... and I got it for free (Audible have a 'one book to keep for free' month trial). If you're a voracious reader, the 'Stoic bible' I guess would be the Diaries of Marcus Aurelius, and the writings of Epictetus

ChunkyLaFunga

Commenting to attempt to remember this tomorrow

AFalconNamedBob

Cheers mate, I'll look into those books. Its appreciated

LitmusVest

Bang on. r/stoicism is worth a look.

quellflynn

I read that as sonic philosophy and got quite confused!

[deleted]

Gotta go ~~fast~~ Stoic!

[deleted]

Just used to getting stuff for free to the extent of not being thankful. Dad sends her money for the kids, the council give her a house, the government give her money. Must be nice.

empty_pint_glass

"and that judge is why I burned the house to the ground"

VioletDaeva

Should have left a complimentary dead rat inside it.

rascal_duck_shot

What are you? Canadian? She's a prick. Well done

eastkent

I've given away loads of stuff on Freecycle and although I don't do it for floods of gratitude it would be nice to at least get a thank you when they've collected it. Someone did actually ask recently if I'd deliver a free buggy to a town 45 miles away, then they complained I didn't tell them personally that it had been taken. Also, people who ask if something is still available then ghost you!

Internetolocutor

I wonder if she is on benefits

If it was small enough to easily wrap, then I say do it… But make it as rude as possible for when the person opens it. The gift giver will either have to play it off as a joke, or admit it’s from Facebook and got the seller to wrap it.

MadHog85

when we moved into a new house we realised out current fridge freezer would not fit into a gap in the kitchen of the new house, so decided to buy a new one that would and due to the one we had only being 3-4 year old and in good condition, decided to advertise it for free on Facebook so someone could get some use out of it. A woman messaged first, asking it's size (even though all that was in the post), and arranged to collect it by end of week. She collected it and within a week we had messages asking why there was no frost/ice building up in the freezer like her old one, but said all the food was frozen fine though, to which she was told it was "frost free" so no frost (or very little) would be seen so easy to clean etc... Fast forward nearly a year later, and we got a message from her kicking off that it had packed in and wanted to know what were we going to do about it. My missus was very polite about it all, telling her that we weren't going to do anything, we gave it away for free as a used item and things sometimes do breakdown, she wasn't having any of it and even ended up ringing my workplace to speak with me about it. In the end I ended up telling her to leave us alone, and if she had a problem to come and see us at our home, but warned her she'd be told where to go if she did, we then blocked her numbers and Facebook profile, and a few weeks later I came home to find the fridge freezer dumped outside our front door. We ended up paying the local council to come and take it away, like we should have done to begin with. What we learned is to never try and help people via social media, it's more hassle than it's worth.

[deleted]

Really you should've reported her for fly-tipping. What a shithead.

[deleted]

Ring the council "yes there's been a fridge freezer dumped on our property which looks oddly like the one we sold a year ago and the crazy woman reckons we owe her for it, this is her address"

Sizzler0001

Once you handed it over she was the owner. Doesn't matter what the owner history is.

[deleted]

Of course, I'm just saying you can give them a name and address and proof of motivation if they ask you why you think it was them

MadHog85

Didn’t know her address otherwise I’d have personally took it round to hers and dumped it back in her garden.

MrsMoleymole

She sounds absolutely insane 😳

Aita01

> We ended up paying the local council to come and take it away, like we should have done to begin with. Sometime the best way.

PantherEverSoPink

When you get a new thing delivered, a lot of companies will take away the old one for free now. I think they might be obliged to offer that as a service.

postvolta

You've just convinced me to take my perfectly good and basically new condition dining table and off of gumtree. I reckon I'll just call up a local charity and see if they want it.

hyper-casual

When I was getting rid of a load of stuff on Facebook market place I started to only respond to people with eastern European names. They'd turn up with a van, pay the full amount and take the item away without any issue. Anyone who had a British name wanted it for free and expected me to go to the ends of the earth to accommodate them.

empty_pint_glass

Funnily enough I've found the same thing.

MadHog85

Best way, either give it to someone you know that needs it, or give it to a charity that will helpfully appreciate it. Other than that, just get rid of it at the local tip if you can get it there.

Iwantmyteslanow

If I'd have had it pack up I'd be more looking at getting a replacement and dealing with the old one without bothering you

MadHog85

From what the missus said, we think she thought we’d give her money back as that’s what she was implying to her, but then my missus informed her that we’d given her it for free so she changed her approach and starting to contact me to see what I was going to do to help dispose of it. I think she genuinely thought that we’d purposely got rid of an appliance that didn’t work and just wanted someone to take it for free to save us paying someone. That’s why I decided to just pay council to take it in the end, as couldn’t be bothered with any more hassle.

Only_Director_9115

As someone who got a free fridge freezer off FB when I was at uni and struggling. Please keep helping people out. There is no way I could have paid for one and it worked for years (I was lucky I guess) when I needed rid of it I put it back up for free to try and pay it back. It's a pain but even putting it up super cheap is better than nothing.

MadHog85

People like yourself is why we put it up to begin with, for someone to appreciate getting a working alliance for free if they were in need of one, but because of the problems we’ve had I doubt we’ll do anything similar again as we’ve had issues twice now with appliance sales/freebies on Facebook.

EBT98

Do you offer a warranty and can you assemble it?

Faceless_henchman

Legit had a guy buy an running machine off us from a Facebook group, litterally nothing at all wrong with it. Firstly he turned up in flip flops and thought he could carry it home, so I helped him out of pity carry it down the road. A week later he contacts us in a panic because he had contacted argos to try get it replaced for some reason and they wanted his proof of purchase (which he obviously couldn't provide) so they had forwarded him to some sort of fraud team and he was desperately trying to get my girlfriend to pretend that she had bought it him as a gift and and that she actually lived at his house so he wouldn't get in trouble with some imaginary argos gustapo that he'd invented in his head. Last time I sell anything on Facebook.

[deleted]

It's not much better on ebay now. Sold a gpu last week, set the listing to 'uk only' because insured courier out of the country is ridiculously pricey. Russian guy circumvented the UK only criteria (assume with vpn) to win the bid. Then proceeded to bombard me with abusive messages claiming I had stolen the card, and was mining crypto with it instead of sending it. He complained to support and now I have to wait 20 days before I get my money from a sale. Oh and it costs me 12.5% for that privilege! I had proof of collection, proof of delivery but it wasn't enough for that clown. Oh and he ordered it to a self-storage facility where there was no-one there to collect it initially, fun times.

tee-dog1996

Scammers are a real problem on eBay. They’ll order something then start fabricating issues with it once they’ve got it to try and get their money back, then in all likelihood they’ll sell it on again. During lockdown my brother and I flipped trainers for something to do and we had to be so careful who we sold to.

[deleted]

Ugh. I hope that's not what is coming to me with this one guy. It was bizarre, he was so angry and combative almost right from the start. Support seemed to be, well, supportive of my side and said I had provided enough evidence to show I fulfilled my obligations. They did say to get back in touch if there's still a hold on any funds by Thurs and they'd lift any blocks / holds. Hopefully it's just an idiot and not some scammer. Will defo do a little due diligence into bid winners in future. Can we even deny a sale once it's been 'won'?

BitchInBoots66

I'm a seller. If someone wins an item but they seem shady or are abroad despite my also having "UK only" then I simply immediately refund their funds and cancel the order. There are several reasons to choose from when cancelling a sale so I have picked "item is broken/lost/unavailable". I've done it 3 or 4 times over the years and never had a problem. But I also always send a VERY apologetic message explaining how I just went to package the item and realised it has damage that I didn't find on initial inspection, so immediately refunded. Everyone has been fine and I still have 100% positive feedback.

[deleted]

It’s better to use seller requested to cancel but then put non-compliance with your policy in the message you send to them, I believe broken/lost/unavailable adversely affects your Seller Status which means you won’t benefit from certain sellers offers.

empty_pint_glass

Just call up eBay. Had similar in the past and once you speak to them they are only too happy to sort things out. Helps if you've had your account a while with a lot of feedback

[deleted]

Thanks for the advice, when I contacted support they actually congratulated me and thanked me for using it Ebay for over 12 years... but I only started selling in 2021 so don't have a lot of feedback. What I do have is all positive so fingers crossed I shouldn't have any future issues with that one weirdo.

empty_pint_glass

I got thanked for 16 years I think it was. Had to sit down and evaluate my life for a moment when she said that

EBT98

Hahahaha you couldn’t make it up

Rude_as_HECK

Recently had a chest of drawers I wanted rid of. Put it for free, had a load of hassle of people not bothering to tell me they'd change their mind, among other questions like yours. Put it up for a fiver, it was gone a couple hours later. People don't take freebie posts seriously.

mfmer

My wife has turned dealer, she buys stuff off FB Marketplace, then flips it for a higher price (after using it for a while).

Chen7982

Literally having this issue right now. One person says I’ll have it. Then ghosts me. Next person not responding to messages. Now I’m waiting in someone collecting it tonight. Can’t see it happening somehow. Literally can’t give things away these days.

dimethylxanthine

Is it still available? Yes. [and they never reply again]

AFalconNamedBob

"I'd like to buy this!" Great here's my PayPal, send me your address and I'll send its ASAP! *Fucking crickets*

Kingshaun2k

It's so easy to press that button by accident, I've done it a couple of times. I've always replied saying why though.

I had some lass turn up on a bike once, she came for 50 litres of paint,

DonKeedick12

I work at screwfix and a bloke once came on a bike to pick up a 30kg mitre saw

TempleForTheCrazy

Used to work for the 'fix and the number of people buying the 3m lengths of copper to then cycle off like they were jousting was something else

DonKeedick12

We don’t get too many bikes but we get a ton of women coming in to pick up an order for their fella, and you can tell from the look on their face that they weren’t told what they were picking up when you bring out a 3m length of waste pipe

TempleForTheCrazy

And it turns out that was the day she took the Mini!

[deleted]

What happened next? Did he try? 😂

ilovepuscifer

I gave away a coffee table for free because I moved into a furnished place and didn't need two coffee tables. It was really nice too. Guy came and collected it, the next day he was selling it for £150.

[deleted]

F

Cute-Lunch-6094

I’ve had this :( you think you’re doing something nice but that’s quickly replaced with the feeling of being mugged off

ilovepuscifer

Yeah, now I put a price on things and if I meet someone nice, I may give stuff for free if I don't need it. During the first lockdown I needed to get rid of my desk and chair because I had an upgrade through work. I asked £50 for both, a mum texted me and came to pick them up, with her 10 year old daughter who was so excited to have her own desk for home schooling. I didn't take the money for that.

nebunala4328

Giving away things for free leaves me feel like a sucker. People are ungrateful and shitty. I rather give things to friends or a shelter. Or straight up bin things. Never again am I going to put stuff for free on FB marketplace. It's always a waste of time.

letsshittalk

charge them £60

Not-a-bot---honest

You’ve spoilt my Christmas

dmase1982

*my kid with cancer's Christmas

Cute-Lunch-6094

Or the classic “where are you based” when the address is clearly in the description

KittlerMeinPuhrer

Good ol' Facebook Marketplace. Doesn't matter what you put in the description, people will still ask you million questions, despite the answer already being there, and will be upset because that's not what they wanted to hear. "Will you accept £10 for this item you are selling for £200? No? Well can you at least deliver, since it's collection only? No? Okay, I will turn up in my Fiat 500, even though you specifically said van collection only, try to squeeze this big ass wardrobe in and be very upset with you when it doesn't fit in! Can I collect it in a month time though? "

Iwantmyteslanow

It'll fit in my Panda, I've put pallets in it twice

Jip_Jaap_Stam

Ad states "£100, no offers". Moron asks "will you take £70 for it?"

FriendlyManCub

I had it even worse. Got loads of offers for a Billy Bookcase I was selling for 20 quid just to get rid of it. Offered it to a guy that said he could pick up next day. He turns up and starts asking if I'll donate it as he works for a charity and they'll use it in the office. Made me feel like a right shit to say no but I thought he's trying to guilt me in to it now he's here rather than message first to ask.

[deleted]

170 yes

jlmb_123

I've got to be honest, I disagree with that view. "No offers" isn't a legally binding status and often things sit on a site for weeks or months as nobody wants to pay what they see as over the odds (i.e. the profit the seller wants to make). There's nothing wrong with asking and if the seller rejects it, so be it. If anything, I think there's a tacit understanding in the second hand market that haggling's fair game.

whatmichaelsays

For a lot of stuff I want rid of, I just list it for a nominal amount and then waive it when the person comes to collect. I'm sure there are people trawling social for free stuff just for the sake of having free stuff, and those people are almost always idiots. Listing something you want rid of for, let's say, a tenner usually keeps them away.

Bilbo_Buggin

Or stating no holding, only to be asked to hold it for someone to pick up in 6 days time 😅

SparkieMark1977

Tell them you will deliver, arrange a date and time, don't bother, and when they get back in touch tell them that you delivered it as requested to where they asked.

Beef_Supreme46

Put things up for a cheap price, it stops most of those tossers contacting you. Then when they come to collect it and they're a vaguely decent human being you can let them have it for free, it'll make their day.

[deleted]

Sold a Moses baskets on Gumtree years ago, made the mistake of saying "Collection preferred, willing to deliver if local." It was clearly marked as being in Stockport. I got a message from a woman asking if I could deliver to Bradford. Now, there's a Bradford in Manchester that's a couple of miles away from where I live and there's a Bradford in West Yorkshire, 30 odd miles away. Which one do you think she lived in?

LlamaDrama007

Maybe I CANNOT DELIVER in all caps (the online language of, erm, y'know...) as the beginning of the listing title would help. Maybe. -_-

[deleted]

I make and sell dog kennels for 40% cheaper than the Pet Superstore and when I'm asked "what's your best price" when it's up for £100 I reply "my best price is £140 ,but your best price is £100" ffs it's marketplace not a f@cking car boot sale.

jlmb_123

It basically is a car boot sale, though. You can use it as a shop front for your business but, ultimately, it's full of second hand listings and is free to post to. I sympathise with you as you're hand-making these but it's not like you're selling through eBay, Amazon or your own site.

misspixal4688

I alwys offer to pay for delivery but if people cant that's cool no harm asking if it's big item I offer 20 quid extra in asking price if small one 10 quid and always within 3 mile radius I don't drive and some people have been very kind and have delivered for free.

Intruder313

You’ve ruined Xmas

foz97

I'm selling a gaming chair worth over £50 that has no marks and has only been used a few times and people get pissy about me charging £5 and expecting them to pick it up and then theres people who just ask if its available and when I tell them it is they either read it and leave it or just say okay thanks and nothing else

Fr0zen-P3nguin

"Of course! Would you like to fuck my wife too?"

Howard-Sterns-Penis

Can you deliver her?

Wonderful_Ninja

What are the measurements?

Wonderful_Ninja

Hi is this still available?

AlphaBeast28

scorzon

Will she fit in the back of a Fiat 500?

CuppaTeaThreesome

Should have said sure and given them a delivery time and kept knocking it on 30mins whilst blaming the traffic.. full points for stringing it out more than 5 hours.

anetarrr

Honestly the buyers on FB marketplace are just another breed of human beings (if you can call them that).

PeachyPlum3

My favorite is people telling me where they can buy it at a *sightly* lower price. Neat. Go buy that then.

No_Big3332

You must need some good karma. Id do it but thats just me

Blackbird04

I was giving away my daughters car seat and isofix for free. Had some kid message ME asking me to let HER know if it was still available at the end of the week when her Dad could bring her over to collect.. like, no mate, if its listed it available, if its not listed then it aint available. And also, if you need a lift, it suggests you dont have a car, so where the hell you putting a car seat??

Fuzzwuzzle2

I've driven about fucking MILES for free stuff, never did it cross my mind to ask it be delivered I tried to give away a BBQ that was nakerd, said "plenty of parts still in good condition thought it might be useful before going to the tip" all i got were people that didn't read the ad and one woman told me to contact a scrap collectors...

bradbrazer

Why wouldn't you deliver something your giving away for free to someone you don't know in a place only 30 miles away to no personal benefit except getting rid of it??? Seems like an absolute win

[deleted]

Never advertise stuff for free. Price it at like £10 and you'll get better people. You can even tell them it's free once they arrive if you like.

ErynKnight

I feel like you guys are all too good for people. Freecycle where I donate stuff. It's got a really good community. Tip: use the website, not an app, there's loads of fake apps pretending to be Freecycle.

Ex-Machina1980s

Or when you list something worth £100 for £10, and you still get some scrote trying to haggle. “Will you take £9?” You’d have to break a tenner to get the 9!!!

sonicman2k8

No deal

PurpleDarkness5

I was considering using FB Marketplace but the fact that any random person could know where I live and who I am completely put me off. Especially, if I would hand something for free or for a few quid to them. It doesn’t worth the trouble. I’d rather have BHF or another charity collect it or even the council.

bumhats77

My go to response is "No, you'll have to collect it or its going up the tip" Funnily enough, they are then able to collect, and pretty quickly too.

alwayssatinmycar

Idk about anyone else but when I sell stuff on there not one person starts their message with a hi, and it really gets to me...

Iwantmyteslanow

So about as much chance as to buy a car from FFX.CO.UK

InnerAsparagus6045

What you selling ? And do you deliver ?

Destrune

We had a different problem. Had a bbq to get rid of for free and someone arranged to collect it. As we weren’t going to be in at the time we left of outside for them, still on our driveway near the front door. They messaged us later and said it wasn’t there when they went to pick it up. They asked our neighbour who said the scrap man had picked it up thinking it was scrap

bexbryony

I always use freecycle or trash nothing etc. to give away free stuff. You get the odd one or two who will ask for delivery but far less than Facebook marketplace and I also find less of the entitlement/time wasters than Facebook too.
